The Week Ahead

9:08PM

Some of you were nervous, weren’t you?  You saw clouds and showers around Sunday morning and you thought “it’s not going to warm up, it’s going to stay lousy”. Weather changes often, and these changes are often marked by unsettled conditions. This is what happened Sunday morning – clouds and showers ahead of and along an advancing warm front.  It took a while, especially in east coastal New England, but the front has finally pushed through the region and some clearing did work in from the west with most areas seeing some sunshine before its after-7PM setting. And now it’s time to look ahead…

This coming week, typical of April, will feature some good contrasts. It will start with a summer preview Monday as a very warm southwesterly flow dominates the region ahead of a cold front west of the region. There will be an exception though, and that is where the southwest wind is coming off the Atlantic waters, keeping the South Coast of New England and southeastern MA considerably cooler. In fact there will be quite a temperature contrast from those ocean-cooled areas to the warmest zones, inland valleys well west and north of Boston. There should be plenty of sun as well. Clouds will start to increase at night from west to east as a strong but slow moving cold front from the west begins to push toward the region. It will likely take all day Tuesday and into early Wednesday for this front to transverse the region. It will be a slow west-to-east process, starting mostly  Tuesday afternoon and ending Wednesday morning. Despite the summertime temperatures readings expected on Monday in parts of the region, much colder air lurking on the other side of the approaching front, once it gets in here, may result in some locations flipping to snow before ending. In fact the areas that are the warmest Monday will have the greatest chance of flipping to snow early Wednesday. Once that fanfare is done, look for a quieter but chilly mid week as high pressure builds in. Fair weather should last through most of Friday, but the next low pressure area approaching from the southwest may spread clouds into the region before the day is over. It is a little far ahead, obviously, but I expect that system to be progressive and move through rather quickly during the first part of the weekend, when unsettled weather is expected. Improving weather would then likely follow on Sunday, which is Easter for those who celebrate it.

  1. Thanks TK 🙂 I have to say, I am enjoying April’s showers 🙂 Not just in anticipation of May’s flowers…or the pilgrims for that matter. 😉 I just love the rain for the rain. 🙂 And I’m loving the sunshine. And so are my cats 🙂 I am really looking forward to when school is out and I will have more time to be outside. There is a park near my house that I grew up with, and it recently got re-done. I want to check it out when all the kids are still in school so that no one looks at me funny when they want their 8-year-old to swing, but a 21-year-old is occupying the swing. 😉

    1. :). One of my favorite peons has always been The Swing in A Child’s Garden of Verses by Stevenson. I’m always reciting it to my kids and now grands. ENJOY 😀

  2. Good morning, very mild outside, a lot of the trees and bushes have budded and is finally not only feeling like spring, but it finally looks like spring, lots of yellow and green sprouting down here in the southern 1/3rd of the woodshill weather forecast area, good day!! Stay cool, drink plenty of liquids, 80 degrees in some locales 🙂

  3. Absolutely amazing wind. We all just came out back door and had all we could do to hold the door and the kids.

  4. My room at school faces due south and on occasion, the gusts sound like they are going to break through the windows !! Getting that high pitched sound from the wind.

    1. Here too Tom. The house is shaking. You all must have a great electric grid setup down here to have this type of sustained wind on a regular basis.

  5. Happy Birthday Tom. You share it with my wife whose birthday is also today!

11AM at Logan, 72 and still climbing. Bedford and Beverly 74 already.

IS 80 in the cards anywhere in the area? perhaps. We shall see.

  6. Wanted to eat lunch outside for the first time this year. That didnt last long, lol. The temps are enjoyable, the wind is not

  7. First game tonight for my son, the wind should make it interesting . Dark cloud cover here in Boston.

  8. Well, it is nice and warm out and the sun occasionally makes an appearance – and there is sort of a summery look to the sky – but the wind kind of ruins it. The first real warm day in awhile and it’s so windy. But – that’s the weather – and nothing one can do about it! There was some mention of possible thunder tomorrow or early Weds. earlier from NOAA. So, even with this wind – makes it kind of exciting. At least it’s a warm not cold wind! A little taste of summer! 🙂

    1. Well hmmmmm. Can you send it this way please Sue :). The house is swaying so much there are literally waves in the water on the table. And the wind is blowing the waves in the ocean backwards. Its pretty cool

  9. Why do companies crank the A/C the first warm day there is? Totally freezing everyone out of their offices. Is it that difficult to keep a consistent ambient temp in a building? Seems like there’s no in-between and they crank full blast either heat or A/C. Such a waste of energy. Rant over, lol.

    1. I have heard recently that a little bit of clover throughout the lawn is actually a good thing. It means your lawn is healthy. Is that true?

      1. I’ve heard of the saying but have not been able to confirm that a little bit of clover means a healthy lawn.

  10. I expected high clouds today but there are more than I thought there would be. Seem to keep re-forming right over eastern MA. Should let go for more sun by 6PM for just over an hour before it sets.

    1. Hopefully they will let go for the lunar eclipse. I’d love to see it over the ocean. I’d love to see it anywhere but the ocean would be an added bonus

      1. I heard that it is known as the “Blood Moon”. I am not going to stay up to view it (2am-5am) since I go to bed late as it is. Those evenings when I am not working, I really should be going to bed much earlier. Technicially, we all should be getting a good 7-8 hours sleep. I usually average 5-6.

          1. I very rarely wake up at night once I fall asleep unless I am real sick or awaken by a very loud noise or music (if you want to call it that these days, lol). Many times I sleep through thunderstorms if they aren’t too loud which is fine with me since they scare me during the daytime let alone at night.

              1. A few years ago I used to get up at 3:00 am to be at my job at 6:00 am. I actually liked the job itself and the only reason I don’t have it anymore is because the company went out of business after a year. It was at the beginning of the “great recession” in early 2008. 😉

  11. If these winds of today were out of the N or E, it would be absolutely brutal in terms of wind chill.

  12. It is good to still see posts from you OS in spite of no more snow threats. Keep them coming! 😀

  13. 60s ….. this is nice at this hour.

Wednesday and beyond are going to feel ice cold now, aren’t they ? 🙂

New England spring ……… one step forward, 3 miles back.

    1. You should see some parts of Texas, they were 88degrees for a high on Sunday, and only reached 55 degrees for a high yesterday.

  14. Some parts of SNE may even see snow flakes before this storm system wraps up. This storm system looks to offer a variety of weather from heavy downpours, gusty winds, rumbles of thunder, and a touch of wintry weather for some.

  15. I feel like this is pretty normal for mid April, 70’s for highs, cold front comes through to knock temps back to 40’s and 50’s, only to go back to 60’s next week for highs

Looking like a lot of rain tonight 🙂

  16. Sun breaking through here. 62.9. Still gusty but nothing compared to yesterday. News said scituate had a 51 mph gust. I have no doubt.

    1. Wow Vicki, u have sun breaking through? Still socked in to the south and east here. I haven’t been paying as close attention to the weather lately as I usually do, but were we supposed to have a period of sun today before more rain comes through this afternoon and evening?

  17. That wind leveled my grill yesterday…tipped it right over. Shocked since it is so heavy my neighbor had to help me move it when I bought it. Plus it has the weight of a full propane tank on it…and some rocks on it holding the cover down. Even Sandy couldn’t knock that thing over.

      1. Fine, thanks. No water…the battle of the driveway is still going on though. I am the only one on my street cleaning leaves like it is Fall outside almost daily 🙂

        1. Lol. The leaf battle is never ending. Web my pump went to turn on with the new drainage system a few weeks ago, it was just humming. I called and they told me there is an 8 business hour policy. It was a Sunday. Ater a threat or two of a lawsuit they replaced the pump that afternoon. Needless to say, I am still on edge when it runs for now after that happened. Got to love paying that much and see that happen the first time.

          1. It seems as if absolutely every business and every product is like that now. I keep threatening to have them put me on their payroll because I spend so much time calling and getting nowhere. I’m sorry with all you spent and went through to have the problem fixed that it ended up being just a different headache. So frustrating

  18. What was the most surprising about the wind yesterday was the sustained nature of it. There were a couple stronger gusts, but the sustained 35+ mph in most spots was impressive. It just didnt let up. At least during Sandy and Irene there were lulls, yesterday, it howled all day.

  19. 2 more weeks until we get the pool area ready for pool season. get the chemicals and everything ready. Though mother nature wanted us to do it yesterday as the strong winds blew the winter pool cover off the pool lol. I had to redo it all just for it to be open in about 2 or so weeks depending on weather.

  20. TK, what are the chances for a flash freeze tonight in the area immediately NW of Worcester? Need to figure out if we will need to treat or not before the morning commute tomorrow. Thanks!

  21. Apologies for lack of update. Long meeting yesterday. Busy night and today. Will update this afternoon sometime.

  22. Huh, WHAT?????

Here is the EURO SNOW MAP for tomorrow:

    http://i.imgur.com/ZODuNWt.png?1

This is showing 1-2 inches for Boston!!!

Now the NAM and the GFS do NOT show snow accumulations for Boston, however,
they do show a DRAMATIC drop in 850 MB temperatures while there is still
    precipitation.

SO either way, it sure looks like there WILL be some snow in the air tomorrow
    AM.

    FIGURES!

  23. Sun and clouds and 70. Wind still sustained in mid 20s conservatively. Good part is its been blocked in part by the house so we have been on the deck for most of the days

      1. Agreed !! Crazy wind, the windows are rattling again !

I’m going to miss this mild, humid weather.

  24. Flood Watch out for Boston area – looks like Flood Warning for west of here. Also, Wind Advisory out for Boston area ’til around Midnight. It’s pouring now in Sudbury – wind was high earlier – calmer now. Looks like heavy rain moving northeast.

  25. Torrential downpour moving through….this one looks to have more intensity than the last area that went through.

  26. This is weird – I just looked at WCVB doppler radar and showed possible tornado conditions in maybe Dedham area? Nothing at all on NOAA – no warnings or anything.

    1. Thanks, OS. I can see that. I am just guessing but there must be little and brief rotations in the clouds that come and go – probably with some stronger wind gusts.

      1. Looked again at WCVB radar and no signs of tornadoes now. I am surprised there isn’t much thunder around – unless it’s west or south of here. Or maybe we’ll get thunder later on. In any case – it’s a very wet day!

      2. Must be some low level shear causing perhaps little spin ups.
I wouldn’t imagine any would be bad.

I’m wondering if the NWS has anything to say?

        1. This is all they say:

AND CONSIDERING THE APPROACH OF A SHARP COLD FRONT AND DEEP
FRONTOGENETICAL LIFT…AND YOU HAVE A PRETTY GOOD SETUP FOR HEAVY
RAIN AND FLOODING. CONVECTIVE ELEMENTS AND MOIST ADIABATIC LAPSE
RATES…AND THERE IS SOME CONDITIONAL INSTABILITY TO WARRANT THE
          THREAT OF ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS.

  27. SPC doesn’t even have see text for our area which is a general thunderstorm threat. The general thunderstorm threat is in Mid Atlantic States. Although last year in CT in July on one day we had two small tornadoes with the SPC having us in a see text with 2% chance of a tornado.

    1. Yup.

Could be the radar algorithms are just not picking up everything appropriately.

      Who knows.

    2. JJ you should go on a storm chaser tour in Texas and Oklahoma, you will never look at storms here the same again 🙂

  28. Been paying close attention to the temperatures – it was 66* at 1pm, down to a low of 61* at 2:30, and now rising and 62* at 4:37. I know there is a cold front coming, but why are the temps slowing rising? Does this indicate some upper level convection? I’m hoping (but my expectations are low) we’ll get some thunderstorms, but I don’t feel like we will.

      1. Till the 26th. Or is it 27. Whatever the Sunday is. We are a constant. At the moment everyone else who is joining us is changing plans and some relatives are thinking of adding plans.

  29. 35F and sleet in Albany …. Snowing west of there.

S wind still out to Worcester, but western Mass is also down into the 30s.

  30. Temp just went up 2 degrees. Wind still steady in high teens and low 20s gusting to mid 30s. I’m pretty sure it has been a steady wind in the 20s foe two weeks

  31. Suspicious backpack put on marathon finish line detonated . Very weird dressed man in custody . Sad for all those people there tonight.

  32. Waiting on 0Z GFS and NAM as 18Z runs MORE bullish on snow in the area. 😀

Also looking at the surface map, there appears to be a little bulge on the front farther South which makes me wonder IF more snow might fall? Don’t know at this point.

    We shall see.
