We’re Lucky It’s Chilly And Damp

3:59PM

Your favorite weather, right? Overcast, 40s, east wind off the still-cold North Atlantic? Personally, I don’t mind it. It’s part of Spring in the Northeast. Most, on the other hand, would trade this for something warmer. Well, you can thank this wedge of dankness for saving us from severe weather, because it is very possible that if we had not been under its strong influence leading up to and into the beginning of the passage of the upcoming storm system, we may have gotten into some of the severe weather that has been battering the South and southern Midwest. We would not have come close to the amount of devastating tornadoes, which have quickly put a big dent in one of the slowest-starting severe weather season in recorded history. Nevertheless, we’re protected, and even though the moisture from this nasty Spring storm is going to get here, it will do so in the form of moderate to briefly heavy rain in a time frame from Wednesday night to early Thursday morning, with nothing worse than a few rumbles of thunder, but no severe weather.

Before that, even though we have plentiful Atlantic moisture bringing lots of low cloudiness and a few areas of drizzle to southeastern New England, drier air above will continue to hold the rain off and will put up quite the fight through Wednesday afternoon, before finally giving in. The storm is being driven by a very broad closed upper level low pressure area which will take several days to make its way through the northeastern US. It will not complete the journey through the area until the start of next week, when its cold core center will cross the region and may even bring some very late season snowflakes to some higher elevations. But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves. It won’t be all bad from now through then. After the ribbon of heavier rain goes through and departs early Thursday, some partial clearing will take place later Thursday into Friday, with fairly mild air, and a southwesterly to westerly breeze as opposed to the chilly easterly wind we’ve had. As the broad upper low exerts its influence through the weekend, we cannot expect complete clearing, but it will be on the mild side through Sunday anyway. Saturday will likely feature more sun than clouds, with Sunday being the opposite, and a shower threat will exist both days, though no all-day rains will occur. Then comes the unsettled and chilly Monday before some drier and cool weather follows that.

    1. Sue that’s a good one . Not far from my house and we have not been there yet. I might try that as I’m leaving it up to her do she will check it out. Thanks for the other suggestions guys. I’ll havto check out the mill wharf some Sunday. Old memories there.

      1. I checked Sues post also and thought it looked great. Will be surprised if it isn’t booked but hope you can find a place. We always did brunch on Mother’s Day and loved it. Too many now to afford it 🙁

        1. She is being stubborn and wants to stay home and grill since just the two of us going to wedding the following weekend, I tried .

  1. I know I am the minority here…but while most of you root for snow, this is what I root for. I love this weather.

    1. :). I don’t root for snow or this or anything….I just enjoy. And I also enjoy this weather. I am in good company with you 🙂

    2. As stated many times, I don’t root for any weather. I love weather. All weather. This included. 🙂

  2. Today is plain awful imo. I root for weather in general but being April 29th not sure how anyone can love this weather!!

    1. I love it. I was just out in the car, driving with the window open. 🙂

At work today I opened the window for a while to let the ocean-infused east wind right on in. 🙂

      1. I’m sitting by the front window which is open, listening to music and just enjoying the smells of late winter and early spring. I don’t think Mother Nature puts timelines on the seasons but I do think she gives us wonders to enjoy

  3. Oops. The blog got hungry (OM-NOM-NOM) and ate my Day 7 forecast. All fixed! The ALL-IMPORTANT day 7 is now there!

  4. Wall of water approaching central MA?
Yup. But watch what happens to it when it gets to about Worcester.
It’s gonna slow down, stop, and disintegrate. Wait for it…

        1. I’m sitting on deck while mac grills and the light breeze feels nice. I do have a complaint……..someone stole the ocean :(. It was there just two days ago

  5. I absolutely agree with you TK in that we are very fortunate not to have any potential for severe weather like in the deep south. I will take winter-like chill wearing my winter coat over light clothing and thunderstorms and tornado potential any day. Early June 2011 is certainly still fresh on my mind. We in central and eastern sections are also fortunate on missing the heaviest rain as well so there will be no real flooding potential around here.

The CPC continues to show below normal temps for the northern tier states including NE for the forseeable future. It is amazing how Alaska continues having above normal temps which they have had since at least February (if not January as well?). I believe their sled dog races were cancelled for the season. I am going to do some research if in fact Boston (58.9″) had more snow than Anchorage this past winter…If I can find that info I will post it later.

    1. When Alaska is warm for a long time, it’s very cool or cold in central and eastern Canada and the northern and eastern US.

    2. Also TK – Is some frozen precip really possible for Monday as you mentioned in your forecast??? :-0

      1. I realize that my forecast is a bit aggressive there, but there’s a pocket of very cold air that’s going to be yanked out of Canada. If it comes across SNE then yes. It may end up further north. If that’s the case, I will add about 10 degrees to what I have now, and forecast a cloudy to partly sunny day with 2 frontal passages (warm front then cold front).

  6. Chilly today! And I don’t mean the kind you can put on a hotdog 😉 THOUGH I did have a hotdog today! (No chilly on it) 😉

  7. Quoted from my personal FB page:

So before anybody gets too far away from reality complaining about how bad the weather was in April, Boston’s weather for the month was almost exactly normal. Specifically, slightly WARMER than normal, slightly DRIER than normal, and exactly normal snowfall (0.3 inch). We don’t have it that bad around here – really.

Oh and let me herein answer that overly-asked question this time of year: “Where’s Spring?” The answer: This IS Spring.

    1. On my 1,100 mail outs it specifically talks about how this winter was very harsh, and how lawns are behind schedule only due to the weather we’ve had. It’s been a cold 6 months, no above average months really makes the difference, the last 2 yrs have been cold and snowy, odds r next winter will be less cold and snowy. 🙂 goodnight

    2. This isn’t spring, spring or late April in New England is more like this weekend, 40’s this late in April doesn’t happen often, this is much below the average by 20 degrees 🙂

      1. Are you saying Boston was 20 degrees below normal today? Or somewhere else?

And this is Spring. I’ve been taking climate records for the government since 1987. Believe me, this is pretty close to a frequent occurrence for eastern New England.

        1. 40’s r not normal in spring here, that’s all lol, you keep saying how normal it is, I feel like we r on the verge of you telling us it can snow in May and it’s normal too, and a high of 43 degrees is completely normal, ekkk not sure, normal highs should be in the mid 60’s

  8. And as expected, the “force field” is at work on that precipitation. Drying up while it moves eastward. The moisture here is in the lowest levels. The mid levels where that precipitation is trying to advance into remain very dry.

  9. What an absolutely miserable night on the golf course! I couldnt even hold onto the club. Still somehow managed to shoot a 42

    1. I read your comment to Mac who smiled and raised his eyebrows and said well done.

His final question to the orthopedic doctor today was “when can I play golf” 🙁

    1. I wonder how much rain the ended up with in total. It seems like it must have continued to rain all night, as it looks like on radar, the rain area is just now pushing past Pensacola.

  10. HI ALL!

Rain’s in much earlier than I expected. Updated forecast to reflect that and posted a new blog with a brief discussion but otherwise no big changes. May have to prolong showers/storms tomorrow but will re-evaluate that later and post another update later today.

Mobile for several hours. Have a great day!

  11. Looking like a day for the ducks, tommorrow may come close to 70 degrees in a few locales, the weekend looks great highs in the 60’s, good day everyone 🙂

  12. Friday and Saturday look like the pics of the week with both days seasonably mild, temps should be between 65-70 degrees. Enjoy!!
