The Many Sides Of Spring

4:27PM

Spring is the most volatile season in New England. The mix and battle of lingering cold ocean water, strong sunshine heating the land, lingering pockets of cold air aloft, moist ocean winds, drier west winds, post-script Winter air masses still sneaking in from Canada at times, and the first pushes of early Summer heat trying to invade from the south all combine to result in a variety of weather. Sometimes things move along, and sometimes they bog down when the pattern blocks up, and we can be caught on the good weather side, or the bad weather side of a stubborn pattern. Basically anything can happen here in the Spring. We already saw a drastic change between Monday and Tuesday, with Summertime warmth being replaced by ocean chill across southeastern New England courtesy a back-door cold front. The impact of course was greater near the coast, though even areas that held onto some sun were considerably cooler Tuesday than on Monday.

The next couple days will feature a turning of wind from east to south, increasing humidity, and a battle between a high pressure ridge center along and off the East Coast with an approaching low pressure trough from the west. It will take a few days for the trough to finally push eastward far enough to bring its ribbon of wet weather into this area. It should finally do so by late Friday, lingering into if not through most of Saturday. Then, as is often the case inΒ  Spring, things look like they will want to bog down and an upper level low pressure area will evolve nearby, keeping the weather on the unsettled side into early next week.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

    1. Yes. It looks wet there too. I think with a SSE wind at upper levels it may be very hard to get that stuff to kick eastward for a while.

  1. According to Steve Burton on WBZ Sports, the Bruins have never won a game 7 on a May 14th.

Interesting how our local sportscasters come up with these bizarre stats…and none in the Bruins’ favor. πŸ™

  2. Three years ago on there way to the Stanley Cup Finals Bruins did beat Montreal in a game seven at home. Will see what happens tomorrow night.

  3. The Bruins schedule on May 14 in the past means nothing.
The only May 14 that matters is tomorrow. πŸ™‚

The Bruins had been on a 2 year roll of never losing on a Monday until they allowed 2 goals in 17 seconds last season in the final game of the finals. πŸ˜›

  4. Looking like low to mid 60’s tommorrow here in the southern third of the whw forecast area πŸ™‚

    1. Except near the shore, upper 50s. But you see the 60s above? I got it covered. πŸ˜›

  5. Really bummed about our first weekend away without the young one as it looks like a washout of a weekend . Glad I’m not getting married . And to boot are son has been sick since Sunday and out of school.

    1. Hmmmm we just celebrated our 35th year……I guarantee that you will have a wonderful weekend regardless of weather. But I sure hope your son feels better

      1. We’re going to a wedding in New Hampshire. First time leaving him in ten years for the weekend. He is always glued to mom and is not happy about us going. I hope he feels better as well . Thought he might have strep but test today was negative . Had a high temp around dinner time and coughing.

    2. Hope he feels better. We are the same way and had never left our daughter as well. It’s tough on both of you the first time they are away from you overnight.

  6. I have tried to post a few times to my WHW family but wasn’t sure what to say. I knew I wanted to say something. Well the pulled muscle diagnosis in Macs back turned out to be a bit more. He’s been in the hospital since last Wednesday and thankfully came home today. He has a small mass in his lung and it spread to his spine in several areas. BUT we are hearing very positive news. He was never a smoker so the options are many and the outcome is positive. He looks wonderful and is facing this with thoughts of the best outcome. As are we all.

    1. Im so sorry to hear that Vicki πŸ™ i hope hes back on his feet soon back on the golf course and the treatments work. Tell him we are all pulling for him! Keep us updated πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks Ace. His first question was when he could golf. His second was does hosp TV get golf channel and it did πŸ™‚

    2. Vicki, so sorry to hear that Mac’s back pain was something more. Was good for him to get it checked out now. Please keep us updated as we will all be thinking of him and the WHW gang think of you both as our family :). Is his stomach feeling better?

  7. Vicki sorry to hear that . Hang tough and stay positive. I’ll keep you both in my prayers.

  8. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. John, we will be in your area at the crack of dawn tomorrow at the Brigham to see a doctor who comes very highly recommended.

  9. Vicki – I am so sorry to hear about Mac. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. And continue to stay positive.

  10. Summit and base of Mt. Washington are each reporting around 48F, but at 4,300 ft ….its 60F !!! (The Mt. Washington website has an option in its weather tab, where you can click the auto road temp profile). There is quite a layer of warm air above us !!

  11. I have a sort of or maybe a bit more than sort of question. I was watching coverage of the bouncy house that was airborn. They said it was staked in the ground. Does anyone know how big a wind it would take to pull that 20 feet off the ground with three children in it and then after they tragically fell out to take it up to 50 feet? Those things are awfully heavy.

    1. Not sure Vicki. I own a bouncy house and a water slide and with kids in it that’s some weight. To be honest I don’t think we stake the bouncy down but the slide we do. Crazy as I never heard of that. To stake down is the smart thing to do but stakes can come up rather easily.

      1. Perhaps it is because it appeared to be in a large field where wind can get to it. However, I don’t understand why it would be up in a high wind. It is so odd.

  12. Good morning!! It wouldn’t suprise me if we came very close to 70 degrees this afternoon. Currently 51.1 mostly cloudy with a few peeks of sun in the eastern horizon. Good day all πŸ™‚

  13. 2nd morning I wake up thinking it’s going to be a cloudy day only for it to be fairly sunny πŸ™‚

  14. Good morning. Tk toys with us….

keeping the weather on the unsettled side into early next week.

What he really meant to say was ALL NEXT WEEK!!!

Yes, I always see the glass as 1/2 EMPTY. πŸ˜€

    1. Sam here Ace. Tough to dress kids for school on days like this….or adults for work πŸ˜‰

  15. I had to drive out to N.Scitiuate RI it was mostly sunny the entire ride, heading back to na, currently a mix of sun and clouds truck temp says 57 degrees πŸ™‚

    1. Per the visible satellite, there are a lot of breaks in the clouds. Like you said above, perhaps more sun than anticipated and if thats the case, with how warm it is above us, perhaps it ends up much milder than anticipated today ?? We shall see.

  16. Vicki, you know I am sending all of my positive thoughts and prayers your way. I am glad you let the WHW family know as the more support you have, the easier it is to get through a tough time like this. Best of luck today at the Brigham.

I am off to the doctor with my son today as he has been spiking a fever on and off since Sunday. He woke up at midnight with a fever of 103. Always something!

    1. Darn Sue – I’m glad you are seeing the doctor and you are right that it always something. Please let us know. I’m very grateful for the support of everyone here and for being part of this wonderful family…..with thanks to all and a special hug for TK for making it possible.

      1. My older grandaughter had same thing the day we left for Humarock back in April. It came out of the blue with a nasty cough, etc. and high fevers. For what it is worth – it seems to run differently in families. Some get it, some do not, but there are degrees of severity. I feel as if it a flu and some are more protected by the shot than others. And that opinion is worth a plug nickle.

  17. Light breeze 63.4 with a 44 DP – much more sun than clouds…..my idea of ideal spring weather ……….of course yesterday was my ideal also πŸ˜‰

      1. It wasn’t even close here yesterday, Charlie. We were in the low 50s with solid cloud cover the entire day. And I enjoyed that as much as I am enjoying today.

  18. Yesterday and today are definitely different in that i can actually see blue skies today with an occasional cloud here and there. Yesterday, yes, there were a lot of breaks of sun before say 3pm, but the sky was always clouded over with a deck of high clouds. I did not see any blue skies at all yesterday but the sun was able to get through.

    1. You should of drove 13 miles south on rt 1, I saw lots of blue sky yesterday, we were lucky it didn’t push through here till after 4ish, good day πŸ™‚

  19. Stopped at home for a second and it’s officially 66.2 degrees here, I’m thinking 70 degrees is definatley in target

  20. Absolutely gorgeous here!! Mostly sunny with some clouds and very light Winds.
NOT that freakin GALE blowing in off of the OCEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just out on Boylston Street and the Public Garden. Very nice out there.

Now if we can keep the weekend/next week WHEEL OF MISFORTUNE away, we’ll be just fine.

    Bruins best SHOW UP tonight!!!!

    1. Logan acting as per normal with a Bleepity bleep bleep EAST WIND!!!!

      NOT SO HERE!!!

      Boston, Logan International Airport, MA
      (KBOS) 42.38N 71.03W

      54.0 Β°F
Last Updated: May 14 2014, 11:54 am EDT

      Weather: Mostly Cloudy
      Temperature: 54.0 Β°F (12.2 Β°C)
      Dewpoint: 46.9 Β°F (8.3 Β°C)
      Relative Humidity: 77 %
Wind: East at 11.5 MPH (10 KT)
      Wind Chill: 51 F (11 C)
      Visibility: 10.00 miles
      MSL Pressure: 1027.6 mb
      Altimeter: 30.35 in Hg

Just a few miles away it’s in the 60s!!!

  21. 1PM 55 at Logan.
    64 at Blue hill
    68 at Norwood.

    The airport BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. The airport always sells most short for high temps, it’s usually not what most are experiencing, it’s 68 degrees here lol πŸ™‚

    2. Most likely, it also suffers the same inaccuracies in high heat.

With all the runway concrete and the airplane exhaust, not to mention being downwind from Boston’s heat island, its also usually 2-4F hotter than most other locations on hot days.

When Logan’s 97F, its usually 91F to 95F everywhere else.

Even the last few years when we’ve run at or slightly eclipsed 100F, usually Logan is one of the few locations near the century mark and everywhere else is 93F to 97F.

  22. Mt. Washington’s summit temp is 54.8F and soaring quickly !!

Lots of sun in central and western New England. I think its temperature bust out there, unless the S wind freshens in a hurry and we get a little indirect cooling from Long Island Sound. To warm aloft with sunshine not to run at 80F by 4pm or 5pm.

    1. Thanks Tom. Mt Washington summit is the same as Logan? What more proof do they need that Logan is not a good choice.

      1. Oh my goodness, I didnt notice they had the same current temp, thats priceless !!

Agree Vicki …. if they want to classify it as a coastal climate observation or something, then fine …. I mean, Logan’s ob relates more to someone 50 miles away in say…. Hyannis, MA …. than it does to someone 3 miles away in the nearby suburbs of Boston. Crazy !!

        1. Good point about the temps relating to a coastal climate which of course is not representative of the state.

          1. Not representative of the state!
It’s NOT representative of the CITY itself.

It is INSANE and Makes ZERO sense!!!

I was walking through the Boston Public Garden
today and it was beautiful and I was saying to
myself: What a perfect location to keep the City
            Weather Records.

BUT Geez, that just makes TOO MUCH SENSE!! Doesn’t it.

  23. It always seems lately that pembroke is running above Boston for the tempature . Boston is at 55 now pembroke at 63.

    1. Oddly, John – or perhaps it is not odd – the temps in Humarock right on the ocean during April were higher or even with Framingham for the majority of the month.

  24. Hmmm

    3PM obs

    Logan 57, Wind EAST
    Plymouth 66, Wind South
    Blue Hill 69, wind variable
    Norwood 72, wind South
    Bedford 67, Wind EAST

I’m not home in JP, but I guarantee it is close to 70!!

Logan blows chunks. What a FARCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. finished all my finals… finally. and i got home to see a facebook post of a few people saying how they wish it was fall and summer does not exist. whats wrong with those people. … Ps the same people that complain about the snow and cold. πŸ˜€

    1. In a couple of months, I will probably be wishing it were fall as well, but I don’t complain about the snow in the least other than its removal from sidewalks. As for the cold, as long as wind chills are fairly tolerable, I am ok as I can bundle up. πŸ™‚

  26. Wx obs. have been at Logan since 1936. Prior to that, readings were taken at Boston Common…a much more accurate location IMHO.

I believe there is a wx spotter (trained by NWS) that takes snowfall measurements at Boston Common especially during big snows but unfortunately, it is not “official” unless it is at the airport itself.

  27. What a beauty of a day today, we reached 73.4 degrees, did better than I thought, tk ik you have been saying washout for sat, Im about to cancel an outdoor cookout bc of it. Do u concur?

  28. NWS posted something on Facebook tht had east of Worcester receiving less than 1″ later this week. That’s a good rain storm but not a soaker.

  29. Two down not good. I hope in wrong but not liking the outcome . They just can’t get by red hot price.

  30. I don’t know what to say. The Bruins played like a bunch of school girls.
The best team won!! Plain and simple.

    Better luck next year.

  31. Back to mild and muggy …..

I wonder if the dewpoint ends up close to 70F later tomorrow or before the front passes Saturday ???
