The Thin Line / The Wide Swirl

6:42AM

The Thin Line: A warmer, humid southerly flow has overtaken southeastern New England and is being announced by extensive low cloudiness that has invaded the region in the pre-dawn hours. This is ahead of a cold front which will be moving very slowly across the Northeast during the next few days, through Saturday. A ribbon of rain in a fairly thin line will accompany this front but will probably not get into this area until Friday night and Saturday, so leading up to that will be lots of clouds, but also times of less cloudiness (this afternoon and evening and possibly again at times Friday especially eastern areas). It will also be on the warm and humid side, except cooler along the South Coast where winds come across cooler ocean waters.

The Wide Swirl: Broad upper level low pressure drifting southeastward from the Great Lakes will cross New England then sit and spin just south and east of the region from the end of the weekend into the middle of next week. This spells an unsettled and somewhat cooler pattern. Though it does not look like days on end of rain, it does look like there will be a risk of shower activity each of the days.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny, some areas may turn mostly sunny at times later. Highs 60s South Coast, 70s elsewhere. More humid. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Mostly cloudy overnight. Patchy fog. Lows near 60.  Humid. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy, still some intervals of sun possible. Slight chance of a shower. Highs 60s South Coast, 70s elsewhere. Humid. Wind S 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers and possible thunderstorms arriving from west to east. Humid. Lows around 60. Wind S to SE 10-20 MPH and gusty.

SATURDAY: Cloudy. Showers and possible thunderstorms with locally heavy rain traversing the area west to east in the morning then periodic lighter showers thereafter. Humid. Highs in the 60s. Wind SE to S 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. A daily risk of showers. Isolated thunderstorms possible. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 60s, some upper 50s coast.

  1. Not liking the humidity with overcast skies. Don’t mind when it’s sunny. Ac going in tonight 🙂

    1. Didn’t even notice the humidity. Love this weather.

I just don’t like the humidity when it’s like 98 with DP of 75!!!
      Now that is pure torture!!!

  2. Thanks TK for the nice update. Rain gets less and less with each update.
    That’s GREAT!!!

Nice morning. Overcast, but nice. Woke up to 64. Car was reading 66 on the way
in. This is more like it.

With this upcoming wheel of misfortune…IF we can keep the wind NW to N and keep
it OUT of the NE, It won’t be too hard to take. Kick that wind into the NE and it will
    be disgusting!!

The Bruins didn’t deserve to win. The Canadians wanted it more. I may NEVER watch hockey again after that Debacle! I wasted 3 hours last night, time that could have been put to much better use attacking projects around the house!!! Last comment on those TURKEYS.

Have a great day all. 😀

    1. They did what Bears do….except this time it was on the ice and not in the woods 😆

      1. I don’t think you mean HIBERNATE. 😆
        Well maybe you do???? 😆

Personally, I think it was the other thing bears do.
Yes, they CRAPPED all over the ICE!!!!

        Sorry I lied! 😈 👿

  3. Good morning, sorry to hear the bruins lost, from what I’m hearing Montreal was the better team, thankfully I’m not a hockey fan or I’d be in a coma for a week similar to a Patriots loss. On the bright side Patriots mini camp will be here before you know it :).

67.4 degrees humid partly to mostly cloudy good day everyone 🙂

    1. I heard from a nfl analyst that Patriots mini camp practices could attract close to 20,000 people especially on Saturdays. Just crazy, I remember over 10 yrs ago when there would be an average attendance of 4-8,000 people per practice. Good day!!

  4. Thanks TK! The air today reminded me of the many mornings I would wake up on a cruise ship in Bermuda in October. Always loved taking the Columbus Day week cruise out of Boston.

    1. Funny you say this. We just had a fire drill and while outside I mentioned
to someone that it felt like an April day in Bermuda to me. 😀

      1. Too funny OS. And as I was typing this message I got an e-mail pop up from Norwegian Cruise Line advertising their Bermuda cruises. These must be signs that it is time for me to reconnect with my love for cruising to Bermuda!

        1. I don’t care for cruises, but My wife and I are LONG
overdue for a trip back to Bermuda. We adore that
          island.

          1. My business partner goes there every march and they love it. I think Rome might be first on our retirement list but Bermuda a close second.

  5. I’ll take this weather….for now….But let’s cross our fingers for a prolonged stretch of nice weather over Memorial Day weekend? PLEASE?!

  6. 77.5 in JP. Beautiful Day!!!

74 at the Airport with the wind finally around to the South!

    Water temperature 50.7

    We’re getting there.

Severe thunderstorm watch for Virginia and NC. Quite an intense line of storms there.

  7. Continue to see those hints long range, on the GFS, of a warm airmass expanding in coverage and in intensity around the 4 corners, even edging a bit into the upper northern Plains.

While there certainly is not a sign of it being directed to us in the 16 day time range, a warm airmass developing out there does make me think that when a jet stream change occurs, a piece of the warmth will break off and head our way.

Maybe not the best next 10 days locally, but I have a suspicion the May 28th-June 7th time frame may bring the first 90F weather.

    1. You’ve been pretty good at this, so perhaps you will be correct.

      Something interesting to watch.

How’s the weather down there? On shore flow or not?

Really nice here, although many more clouds than sun.

      1. Wunder has Humarock at 72 with a very gusty SSE wind in the teens with gusts in the 20s. Will be interested to see if that gels with Toms first hand report

        1. That sounds about right Vicki ! Cloudy now, we had some sun during the morning.

The air is heavy. Our school was getting stuffy and my house is too. I had the cold A/C blasting in my car and it fealt great !

    1. Thanks JJ.

      What’s going on down there?
      Any ground confirmations?
So far, these all look to be doppler indicated and does NOT
necessarily mean there is a tornado on the ground.

      Curious to know.

      1. Looks like a tiny cell in the middle of that tornado warning. It expires in 7 or 8 minutes. There’s a tstorm warning just SSE of it

  8. Latest NWS observations from Marshfield. 😆 😆 😆
Right on the ball, they are!

    1. LOL ….. Its been down for a while, maybe 2 months. Perhaps the NWS can visit the airport and fix it.

      1. Sure, after they get a forecast correct! 😆

Seriously, doesn’t the NWS have a staffing problem due
to budget issues? That might explain it.

    1. We’ll see. I’m guessing RAIN amounts will come DOWN with
      successive forecasts. 😀

      1. The Sox’ saving grace is that no one in the AL East has jumped out at 28-12 or 29-11. Everyone is right near .500. I think they are only 1 game out of 1st.

I think they were 7-10 or 8-11 at one point and have been about 13-10 or 12-9 since to be 20-20.

I think by the 80 game mark, they will be in 1st place. 85-90 wins may all be needed to win the division this year.

  9. I saw flash flood warnings around Ithaca NY. I have friends traveling there tomorrow from this area for a graduation. Does anyone think there could be a travel problem?

  10. Hi Vicki… Flash Flood Watch up for Ithaca, NY from 11pm tonight through Friday evening. This all part of a slow moving cold front that will produce 1-2 inches of rainfall. There could be some embedded thunder with the front but not expecting any severe storms for there or our area in addition to heavy rainfall.

  11. Looking like the rain won’t be that bad after all for the weekend away, heading out in the morning.

        1. It was today. I must have said yesterday accidentally. It was great. We loved the doctor and mac has an appointment with the director of thoracic oncology at the Farber next week. He is in very capable hands.

  12. Geez we go from a washout sat to a slight chance of rain, I don’t see much rain on sat, couple showers

    1. HAdi. Sure. I was reacting to Bs loss. STILL I dont expect same results as last year. And blown games are blown games no matter what point in the season

  13. NWS has a min of 0.75″ of rain for my area. Not flooding rains but not just a few showers either.

    1. This video is Something else. I saw it yesterday. If it’s the same one,
there is a SMOKENADO as well as the FIRENADO. Good stuff Vicki.

      1. A good number of Mac’s brother’s in-laws live in that area and have been warned to be prepared to evacuate. Our niece attends college in San Diego but she just headed home for the summer. They said they caught two kids trying to light fires last night. I can’t even wrap my head around that.

        1. yes, I heard that. Either they are vicious animals or
they Just plain weren’t thinking. Either way, it sucks.

Officials are not sure these 2 started the main fire.

My parents and one of my brothers lived out there for
about 5 years or so. They missed it so much back here,
that they had to come home.

          Hope ALL are safe!!

        1. It makes one wonder why more planes aren’t struck
and damaged. I know they ARE designed to take a hit, but those lightning bolts are pretty powerful beasts. I wouldn’t
want to be on a plane taking off or landing in a T-storm.
In addition to the Lightning, there are those deadly
          downdrafts!!!

Seriously, the runway should have been shut.

We landed in Miami in 2005 just before a brutal T-storm. We were stuck on the tarmac for 3 hours as
they SHUT DOWN the airport. The wind was so strong the plane was rocking while it sat on the tarmac. It looks like Miami Airport SHOULD have been Shut down yesterday!!!!

But what do I know???? 😆

          1. I was going to ask my SIL about the frequency of lightening interfering. Also, I have not heard anything about the tornado at Miami International. Was there one?

  14. Had my car serviced in Newton this morning. Just got into the office.
What a spectacular day out there. I was just in awe of the weather on the drive in.
There were many clouds, but the Sun kept peeking out. Just awesome!

It’s up to about 70 already. What humidity??? I don’t feel it. It feels GREAT out there!

For May, can’t ask for much better than this.

Let’ keep the Rain OUTTA Here!!!

    1. Wow – complete cloud cover here. And a nice breeze. It is a nice day despite lack of sun! Last night was amazing as well.

  15. Thanks, TK.

I agree – although it’s not bright and sunny out, it’s still nice. I love how the sun is in and out, similar to what OS said. Some areas of the sky are dark and others bright – the light has a special look to it. And there’s a nice breeze w/some humidity but not overwhelming. I wouldn’t mind a little rain for the wknd. to keep everything green and lush but I don’t want the heavy rain. But in the weather world – we don’t get to choose. We just get what we get! 🙂

Vicki – I am glad that Mac is being taken care of – he is in good hands at Farber.

  16. Here is an image of the compass headings:

    http://www.funsocialstudies.learninghaven.com/images/comp4.gif

You will note that SSE is 157.5 Degrees.

Most 11AM observations have the wind anywhere from 140 to 170 or generally
speaking SSE. This goes all the way back to Albany.

    11AM obs from Boston:

    161454 BKN029 BKN037 BKN250 10 71 59 1716G20

Note Dew Point = 59. Not too bad at all.

Ocean is right around 50 Degrees.

    1. Main action is still WEST of Albany and WEST of NYC.

Have to watch this advanced action. Some of it looks to be intensifying.

  17. Just got nasty out there. Showery, almost tropical in nature. We were having an outdoor lunch event for the company and everyone just came running in, lol

    1. he he he

      craptastic
      (adj)
      1. in a good sense, the quality of being so crappy that the object is humorous or desireable

      2. in a bad sense, extremely crappy

etymology: blend of the words ‘crap’ and ‘fantastic’
      1. This place is awesomely cheesy! It’s craptastic!

      2. The break-up was awful. It was craptastic.

  18. What are the chances of getting some yardwork in later tomorrow? Will it completely dry out or still be drizzly?

    1. Tomorrow is ADVERTISED to be DRY as in completely clearing up with
no RAIN and/or Drizzle. Sunday, is a different story.

      Good luck.

        1. You decided at 7PM on a forecast I issued 30 hours before? 😀

Or are you just setting it up so you can make a sarcastic comment about how sunny and warm it is Saturday afternoon after I called for a wash-out based on the best info I had on Thursday?

          I’m on to you. 😛

          Nice try though.

Enjoy your cook out and swimming party. 🙂

    1. I hope this doesnt off and on delay or outright cancel tonight Sox – Tigers game.

      Scherzer vs. Lester.

Best pitching matchup of season to date.

      1. Not raining outside of my window at the moment.
Although, it is pretty wet out there. 😀

    1. Should have no problem hitting 1-1.25″ here in Wrentham. Already .43″ from the rain today. The RAP and HRRR show the big band out west restrengthening and providing some serious downpours late tonight and early tomorrow morning. I may even end up near 2″. This is the HRRR for tonight, through its range of 15 hours. Still some rain to go closer to the coast so these are incomplete totals especially near the coast.

      http://models.weatherbell.com/hrrr/2014051621/boston/hrrr_t_precip_boston_16.png

If that link doesn’t work try this-

      http://i.imgur.com/gScjHsH.png
