Weekend Outlook

3:30AM

Don’t cancel your outdoor plans unless they are first thing Saturday morning in southeastern New England. Things are moving along and we salvage better than 75% of Saturday for much of the region, and it will turn out to be a beautiful day, as a ribbon of rain and embedded thunderstorms starts the day out especially eastern MA, southeastern NH, and RI, before it all shifts eastward offshore (lastly to depart Cape Cod), and midday/afternoon turn out wonderful – drying air, lots of sun, and mild!

EvenΒ  Sunday does not look terrible, though with some cooler air arriving aloft, the atmosphere will be a little more unstable, and a boundary may set up over eastern MA, RI, and southeastern NH during the day, with onshore wind battling a land breeze. This will lead to some developing clouds and possible pop up showers. But overall, the day does not look terrible.

Upper level low pressure centered east of the region Monday-Tuesday will keep it a little unsettled but we are not looking at all out rainy weather, just a risk of pop up showers both days. Things will likely move eastwardΒ  in the atmosphere by midweek so a new system from the west pushes in later Wednesday into late week with a better chance of more widespread showery weather.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Starts cloudy with rain and embedded thunderstorms ending west to east by mid morning, then clearing from west to east later morning through midday for a sunnier afternoon. Drying. Highs 60s Cape Cod and South Coast, 70s elsewhere. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows upper 40s inland valleys to middle 50s urban centers and immediate coast. Wind light NW.

SUNDAY: Sunny into late morning. Becoming partly sunny midday and afternoon with isolated to scattered showers especially southeastern NH, eastern MA, and northern RI. Wind variable 5-15 MPH tending to be E near the East Coast and N elsewhere.

MONDAY & TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered mainly PM showers. Lows near 50. Highs in the 60s.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Chance of showers or light rain late day. Low 50. High 65.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Periods of rain or showers. Lows around 50. Highs in the 60s.

  1. TK, thank you for the update. Woke up to a lot of rain, but weekend looks pretty good after all. End of this week not looking like we will see much sun.

  2. Thanks TK.
Sun is out where I am in CT and clearing line pushing east. I am looking forward to getting on the golf course this morning for the first time this year.

  3. I just read your comment on the other thread, TK. Hope you are feeling better today. And there was discussion on here also that showed today would not be the expected washout so never worry about not being able to update πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Vicki. Improving. We figured out that 3 of us (me and 2 close friends) must have all caught the same bug because all 3 of us felt the same way within about 12 hours of each other.

I was going to head to the RI Air Show today but we opted to let it slide this time and recover a bit more. The Blue Angels are returning to RI next year on May 30-31, so I shall go then. πŸ™‚ I’m going to get some things done here at home both inside and light work just outside while I was undercard races leading up to the Preakness. Going out this evening to a local carnival/fair and to do some bowling. So it all works out nicely. πŸ™‚

Tomorrow is more outside work. Weather should be nice for it. Just have to watch for pop up showers in the PM.

  4. Morning. B-Day greetings LongShot.

SO where was ALL of this rain?
Doesn’t look like we got much here in JP.
Don’t have a rain gauge so I can’t tell you for sure.

North says .45 in N Attleboro. Sounds about right.

Looks like Logan came in with .7 inches. Oh well. I’m surprised at that.
Just did not look like a big deal at all.

Now let’s get the SUN rolling!!!

  5. I see that there was a tornado reported in VT?
At least radar signature requiring a Warning.

    Anyone know about it?

      1. BURLINGTON, Vt. β€”The National Weather Service said a tornado was spotted at 4:06 a.m. near Worcester, Vermont.

        1. Interesting OS. Thank you and thank you for rain totals. Sounds about right for here. We had downpours through the evening and morning hours but they were very brief

  6. Anyone know why I have to enter name and email for comments each time. I don’t on iPad and didn’t on old phone. Just on new phone. Tx

    1. Most likely its your browser settings on the phone. Try and set it somehow to “remember” this site

    1. You must be the person who used to come on WBZ’s blog and slam them because what they said on Monday for Saturday didn’t work out exactly right.

Besides, since when does a bad forecast make you cancel anything? You always have a beautiful day there anyway, sunnier and 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the world, so it should not be a problem, right? πŸ˜€

Did you have people flying across the country for this event? Because by Thursday night it was starting to become clear that the rain would be outta here rather early on Saturday. I just did not have a chance to issue a new forecast here. There are many other outlets to check. πŸ™‚

Here’s how you do it: You check updated forecasts. Or you make them yourself, since yours are never wrong. πŸ˜‰

  7. And to Longshot, happy bday wishes!

May is a great month for bdays. πŸ™‚ I got one soon myself.

  8. The sun was just out up here and it was nice to see the mountains as yesterday it was to foggy , also it’s warming up here. I did not bring a sweatshirt and bought a north face one last night as it was cool. 4 pm wedding and we just got back from breakfast and the resort shops. My son is being a trooper but still totally not himself from his illness this past week. Happy b-day longshot.

  9. Great day out there. Headed to kayak on the Charles.

10 years ago was a great day here in the Commonwealth. Go out and enjoy our beautiful state!

      1. πŸ™‚ read the globe today. You’ll figure it out!

I’ll give you a hint – Massachusetts was the FIRST!

  10. I cant believe next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend !

Which has me wondering ……. What is the town Orleans going to do about the current conditions on its very, very popular ocean side beach, Nauset Beach.

    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=skaket%20beach%20camera&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nausetbeach.org%2F&ei=EYh3U4WpOMiXqAaIhIJA&usg=AFQjCNFic4A09eLoTEhQqcxGKNtLYFsM2Q

Top webcam photo (the bottom photo is the bay-side beach, skaket beach).

    I’m amazed/horrified.

There’s NO beach at high tide anymore. All the sand is gone !!

High tide today is at 2pm and as the camera continually updates up and down the beach, you’ll see at noon-time, the water is making it to the dunes in some places.

This has not usually been the case ! Usually, there’s a beach of 30-50 yds width above high tide, that had remained above the high tide mark by a couple feet vertically. 6 hrs later at low tide, the water dropped to reveal a steep slope to ankle deep water.

    1. The cam rotates. There are 3 camera angles. There’s the view south (appearing to look to the right), there’s the view north (looking left) and the east view (looking straight out towards the ocean).

Hopefully you’ll catch the latter, the east view out towards the ocean, one of the main entrances to the beach.

    2. Tom. Hull and Humarock are the same. Hull seems to have lost beach in many places. Humarock just has a narrow beach at high tide. Kennebunk beach also from what I’m told. I posted a link here a bit ago that said the northeast is showing the largest rise in ocean of other locations. Can’t remember if worldwide or nationwide

      1. And …. up by that seawall in Brant Rock used to be a small sandy beach at low tide. No longer … we were there last Wednesday and had to have shoes on to walk over the rocks. I also think perhaps 2-4 ft of sand disappeared because, suddenly poking through the rocks was a line of rusted, jagged steel ? (I don’t know what it was) and I had never seen this before, so this rusted feature was seeing air for the first time that I could ever remember.

        1. There is a wavy steel support in front of a lot of homes in hum. And the sand is definitely disappearing. But it is not anywhere near as low (sand) as it was 30 years ago and well before that. There are huge steel arms that run perpendicular to the wall on the public beach at hum that date back to early 1900s. I’ve never seen them. Just pictures. And when kids were little the wall was taller than mac who is 6’1″. It is only a few feet now. But that could be sand pushed up by higher tides also???

  11. Beautiful out there! Im having a huge green inch worm/caterpillar problem. The minute my large green maple tree had leaves they got destroyed by the worms. All the leaves are chewed up. They are all over the place! How do i get rid of them? I know the damage has been done but is there anything i can do to prevent this?

  12. 12z GFS has 15C 850 mb temps May 30-31 over our area.

Is this a harbinger of a carbon copy of last year ? A somewhat chilly Memorial Day Weekend, then a week later, its warm to hot ?

  13. Glorious day out there!!!

72.3 here with Bright Sunshine and a nice breeze.

For this date, I’d assign it a 10!!!

    Enjoy.

  14. the hockey team that just beat the Bruins ….

well, they are getting smoked in their own building 7-2. The Bruins defeat to them looks even worse.

    1. And they just scored to make it 7-2. It was 7-1 for a while and I saw Price sitting on the bench. Been checking in on the game between undercard races at Pimlico, and between all that going outside to cut stray branches off the shrubbery etc.

A mix of everything and making sure I get a little outdoor time in on the wonderful afternoon.

      1. it is wonderful ! This letdown and maybe that’s what it is for Montreal, used to happen to the early 80s Celtics after every time they played the 76ers.

I know its crazy, but I kind of want Montreal to advance at least to get a little solace on the past series. Then the Western Conference team can beat them in the Finals.

  15. 75.6! WOW!! What a beauty today!! I can’t say it enough!!!! WOW!!!!!!

    Re: Montreal
Perhaps they don’t have anything left in the tank after laying it all on the ice
whipping the Bruins? Just a thought.

        1. That was ahhh, well, umm Meant to be a little DIG. πŸ˜†

Actually, we’re eating out. Nothing fancy. Meeting
old friends at the Outback. πŸ˜€

  16. Record Event Report from National Weather Service Caribou, Me
    RECORD EVENT REPORT
    From Matt Noyes

    NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CARIBOU, ME
    447 PM EDT SAT MAY 17 2014

…record warm minimum temperature set at caribou me…

the low temperature yesterday at caribou me was 58 degrees. this is
the warmest low temperature ever observed at caribou on may 16th.
the old record of 55 degrees was set in 2012.

      1. I didn’t know that. There are tons of them. Were you able to open the others from that link? Glad you enjoyed. We also went when I was a child.

    1. Very interesting. Isn’t it funny how the majority really do think of going to the moon and do not focus on looking back at our own planet.

  17. I had made a post regarding Montreal when the series started that boston was there series and they wanted to win that series at all costs.
No surprise at all as I said the tank would be empty after the series and if they best boston.

  18. To all, thanks so much for the birthday wishes!

Now we need everyone to wish for a good Memorial Day weekend. Especially weather-wise.

  19. Vicki,
Had a busy couple of days, so I just got around to reading the blog. I’m very sorry to hear of your news. I will keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayer!

    1. Hi shotime. Thank you very much. I can’t tell you and everyone here how much your positive thoughts and your prayers mean to me and to Mac

  20. California Chrome won the Preakness. The Belmont will be very interesting. Would love to see a triple crown winner

  21. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What is a widespread and long duration windstorm induced by a thunderstorm called?
    A. Hurricane
    B. Typhoon
    C. Derecho
    D. Dust devil

    Answer later today.

  22. The start of Memorial Day Weekend is not looking promising.

I have been camping for roughly the last 15 Memorial Day Weekends and unscientifically, I can say the majority of them seem to start off chilly, sometimes damp and then of course, as Monday arrives, so does the sun and temps in the 70s.

    1. Pure coincidence in timing, but that mix of conditions is very seasonable as well. πŸ™‚

And that timing may be what we end up with next week.

      1. We are camping in Myles Standish Forest this weekend. Looking forward to it, as always. However, it was chilly and damp through most of Saturday last year. Was hoping to avoid that this year, but as always, will make do with what is thrown our way weatherwise. Less swimming, more campfires I guess.

  23. saturday afternoon went out to cousins b-day party turned out to be great outside. upper 60s to low 70s and sunny. πŸ™‚
not as humid and unsettled as i was orignally thinking it was going to be this weekend

  24. Wow, today’s 12z GFS promotes quite a warm work week following Memorial Day.

Jet stream moves north, heights rise considerably and all I see on instant weather maps for May 27 and a few days beyond are 80s.

  25. I hate to slam the NWS, but I must…
Let’s compare their point forecast for Woburn and zone forecast for SE Middlesex County in which Woburn is located.

    Point forecast: THIS AFTERNOON… Cloudy.
Zone forecast: THIS AFTERNOON… Sunny. Isolated showers.

Issued minutes apart from each other.
    This system does not work.

    1. Oh and now they just changed the zone forecast to “mostly cloudy”. 3 tries, all wrong.

  26. Tk what’s the forcast for tomorrow as I have not seen any news this weekend. Nice time away in New Hampshire for the wedding. Our son is so glad were home.

    1. Hehehehe. I’m betting you and your wife were equally glad to see him:). So glad your first time away was perfect though.

      1. Yes Vicki true. Were both beat as its a 2.50 ride home. You ever hear of a 9 hr wedding reception well last night was from 4-1 and than a 20 minute ride back to resort.

        1. I’m too old for a 9 hr reception. But then I may always have been. That is a very long time. Glad you had fun tho

    2. Similar to today but there may be a bit more cold air aloft promoting more clouds and a better chance of scattered PM showers and isolated thunder.

  27. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What is a widespread and long duration windstorm induced by a thunderstorm called?
    A. Hurricane
    B. Typhoon
    C. Derecho
    D. Dust devil

The correct answer is C, derecho.

    1. My son in law mowed for the second time last weekend. I don’t think we are too far behind schedule but our lawn is not the best. Although at the moment it looks very green except the area that was grub munched

  28. Vicki, thank you, it was a great weekend and indulged a little in my number vice, excellent Cabernet. πŸ™‚
