The Week Ahead Plus

7:53PM

Oh, Summer must be coming, because it’s an 8-day week ahead post! That means that a long weekend looms, and indeed it does – the first weekend of the Summer for many, the start of the tourist season, otherwise known as Memorial Day Weekend. Of course, we should not and will not forget the meaning of the holiday itself, which actually falls on May 30 but is celebrated on the last Monday of May. And on that day and every day we should remember all of those who have served our country. In this post, we’ll take a look all the way out through Memorial Day (May 26).

The Work Week: It’ll be a “low pressure work week”, maybe not in your job, but in the weather. The weather will be governed by 2 low pressure areas, one that sits and spins just to the east of New England with an upper extension over the region Monday and Tuesday, and that one getting out of the way for a second low pressure area that arrives from the west late Wednesday and hangs on through Friday. The first low will provide instability that will bring the chance of showers and a few thunderstorms both Monday and Tuesday. Widespread rains are not expected, but anybody could get wet at times especially Monday afternoon and a couple more times on Tuesday. Some places may escape much of the shower activity as it will be somewhat hit and miss. The second low will bring periods of rain as early as Wednesday night and lingering Thursday and Friday. Its exact position will determine how often rain occurs and how widespread it is, but it looks right now like the second system will deliver more widespread rain, though not particularly heavy, for the end of the work week.

The Long Weekend: It’s a long way off, from a forecasting standpoint, but the early call is that low pressure will continue to bother the region on Saturday, with a continued chance of some wet weather. With some luck it will be pulling off to the east with slow improvement. It is starting to look like a more westerly flow will bring drier and warmer weather for Sunday and Monday – something that will be monitored as the week goes on.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Decreasing clouds. Lows in the 40s to lower 50s, mildest along the coast and in urban centers. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Clouds redevelop. Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. Any thunderstorms that occur could produce small hail. Highs in the 60s. Wind NW to N 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Lows 50-55. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of additional showers. Highs in the 60s. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sun to start, clouds to finish, possibly turning wet at night. Low 50. High 65.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: Cloudy with periods of rain. Lows 50-55. Highs 55-60.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 50. High 60.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 55. High 70.

MONDAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 80.

  1. “The Work Week: It’ll be a β€œlow pressure work week”, maybe not in your job, but in the weather.” Hahahaha Love it πŸ˜‰

You tell it the best, TK πŸ˜€

  2. Thank you TK. Love the discussion. I figure we can do yard work in the rain just as well as in the sun of that is what we get on Saturday.

It was a cool day compared to yesterday. It is amazing how cool the low DP can make high 60s feel. What a great weekend

  3. My grass is very happy with the .86″ of rain we received on Saturday. Looks like we can expect a little more this week πŸ™‚

    1. I wish I could send a link to the before and after pictures of my back yard but I am far behind with that technology .

      1. Coastal,

        It’s pretty easy.

Assuming you have the photos filed on your hard drive, simply
log onto a site that allows you to upload photos. One such site
that several of us use here to post weather maps is

        http://imgur.com/

You select the photo, upload it and save it. Then simply copy
the link and paste it into a WHW post and VIOLA you are
        done. Piece of cake.

        Good luck.

  4. Good morning. Thank you TK. Someone mentioned that it was an excellent discussion. Well, it’s always an excellent discussion!! Many thanks again.

The weekend was great weatherwise. Saturday was a 10 and Sunday was a 7 or 8.
Sunday was much more cloudy and quite a bit cooler, but nice just the same. No rain. Good day to be outdoors. I actually went fishing for the 1st time this year. Very peaceful. I was all alone and no one bothered me. Fishing was slow as water was
pretty high. 2 favorite spots had the water running too fast for the Bass. In another location, managed to get one decent sized large mouth bass and just missed another.

No T-storms for Tomorrow evening please. Going to Red Sox game.
T-storms today?, Go for it! I don’t care.

      1. Hadi, let me check the ticket.

        Grandstand Section: 16, row: 8, seat: 18

Where are you sitting? If we aren’t at opposite ends of the field,
I can meet you for a few minutes at a designated area or Concession stand.

An old friend has a season ticket package and invited me
to join him for the game. We had dinner with him and his
wife on Saturday evening so the ticket is free since I picked up
        the tab for dinner. πŸ˜€

I’d would be cool to at least say hello.

      1. I tried to keep a couple but they all were either diseased or simply in bad shape. We plan on putting in a couple of sugar maples.

        1. Very high, as the raindrops fall on my head. πŸ™‚

But, with the dry air, I cant imagine it would end up being more than .20, even .10 total.

  5. the sun is out with nice temperatures celebraing that i got
    eniviornmental science. A
    geography A
    photography A
and i think i gave my math professor a heart attack and got a B+ and not only a B+ but on the boarder of an A minus πŸ˜€

  6. Just drove through a rather heavy shower on the way back to the office.
    Sun is back out now.

BIG COLD drops, but no hail. πŸ˜€

  7. Coastal, before you post the link to WHW, IF you right click on the image and
Select Open Image in a new Window and the copy that URL, just the image
gets posted on WHW and not the other IMGUR.com stuff, just like this:

  8. There are some very dark, threatening looking clouds around. Just got clipped by a shower at our school, but 1 mile east …. it had completely missed.

  9. Well, well ……

The EURO the past few days had not been matching the GFS’ post Memorial Day weekend big warmup, but the 12z EURO sure looks warm today !

Also, I think this is around 3 days in a row that a GFS run is hinting at something tropical emerging out of the Caribbean and into the Gulf in the 12-16 day time range. Interesting to see if that trend continues.

      1. A wet bride is a lucky bride, but a soaking wet bride is a groom’s worst nightmare

  10. It may not be a thunderstorm, but this complex of showers just north of Marshfield just had a pretty good gusty NNE wind push through.

Rain is imminent, the sky to the north looks like sheets of rain.

  11. Oops. Coastal says:
    May 19, 2014 at 6:58 PM
What are the chances of the north shore rain hitting the south shore?

  12. We seem to be heading in a positive direction for the upcoming weekend weather. At least tonight, gone are the 50s and showers for Saturday, seemingly replaced with around 70F and perhaps a shower …. Sunday looks milder than that and Monday is bordering on being warm. I like the trend !!

    1. See below. So which model are Mets believing these days?
It appears to be the GFS. πŸ˜€

  13. Agree Tom I am feeling optimistic for the weekend.

Skins and Pats are holding joint practices this summer during camp prior to first pre-season game!! So pumped for football!!

  14. Not for nothing, but the Euro just does not jive with forecast highs coming up.

For the WHOLE weekend, including Monday. forecast highs are 60-65.
None of this 70s and 80s stuff I have been seeing.

    What’s up with that?

    1. I hope the EURO is not onto something, but I think the last month or so, its been the EURO coming around to the GFS in the 4-7 day period more often than not. A departure for sure from past years, but perhaps due to that upgrade TK talks about.

      1. Seems that way, doesn’t it?

Oh well, it will do what it wants to do anyway, so we shall
        see.

  15. Will there be an EAST wind this afternoon/evening?

Current winds are: Boston NW at 9 and Beverly NW at 7.

As the SUN starts it’s warming will those speeds pick up from NW?
OR will the EAST wind eventually take over?

I fear the EAST wind for the baseball game this evening. That would be a bummer!!!

    1. JR said there would be an ocean breeze but that it isn’t as bad as it would be in march. I guess it is all about perspective as I thought of you when he said it πŸ˜‰

      1. πŸ˜†

“some” of the bite has been removed because the ocean has
“warmed” up almost to 51 from the upper 30s. However, with
an ocean temp of 51, under the right conditions, it can still knock the temperature down along the coast into the 50s!!

NWS says 60s along the coast. IF you believe that, I have some
swamp land in Florida to sell you. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜† πŸ‘Ώ 😈

  16. From the NWS at Taunton regarding today:

RISING HEIGHT FIELDS WILL ALLOW FOR MILDER TEMPS THAN YESTERDAY. HIGHS SHOULD MAINLY BE IN THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 70S WITH THE WARMEST READINGS IN THE LOWER CONNECTICUT RIVER VALLEY. IT WILL BE COOLER ON THE IMMEDIATE COAST…WHERE AFTERNOON SEAS BREEZES WILL HOLD HIGHS MAINLY IN THE 60S.

Eric Fisher last night at 11, indicated that temperature along the coast “could”
FALL back into the upper 50s!!!!!!!

    Current ocean temp: 50.5

    1. I think this is the main link to it. Looks like the one I viewed.
Eric Fisher showed in last evening on channel 4.

He called it an “LP SuperCell”. Supercells are often put into three classification types: Classic, Low-precipitation (LP) and High-precipitation (HP). LP supercells are usually found in climates that are more arid, such as the high plains of the United States.

  17. Didn’t realize it was TK’s birthday.

Enjoy TK! just wait until you hit a couple of those magic milestones!! πŸ˜†

I was OK with 30,40 and even 50, but 65 did a real number on me. That one really hit hard. You know membership in AARP and receiving the MEDICARE Card. Really pounds the issue.

      1. Ok – I take that back just a little. I applied for Medicare online….just because I have to and not because I need it yet. That was a bit painful.

          1. The problem is that I still think I am 49. It was 39 a couple of years ago but I figured I had to be a bit more realistic πŸ˜‰

            1. I KNOW how old I am.

My daughter turns 42 next month.
If that doesn’t hit home, nothing does! πŸ˜€

  18. Not sure if everyone realizes that we are averaging roughly 4+ degrees above average in May even with east winds at Boston.

    1. Yes, I am aware and quite frankly that surprises me a bit.
But then again, Logan did have 3 consecutive days of 80+ and quite a number
of days in the 70s. I’ll Take it. NOT complaining.

      Bring in some more!!!

    1. Not saying at all that the driver was speeding or doing anything wrong. It could easily be a bus failure. But I see far more school buses around here being driven irresponsibly. Our street is short – and full of kids – and the bus careens down here every afternoon…..well above the speed limit. I have called and nothing is done. I also report any bus that drives aggressively and too many seem to. Again nothing done.

      1. And the driving record of the woman who nearly put the MBTA bus onto the Pike is horrendous. How she was driving a bus is beyond me and someone needs to be responsible for hiring her.

Oh dear, OS, you hit on a sore topic with me – can you tell πŸ˜‰

        1. I’m with you 100% on this. My wife and I were appalled to learn of that MBTA driver. I wonder IF there isn’t a similar story with this School Bus driver. Whoever hires these people don’t do much of a back ground check. I believe that the salaries are so LOW that they are just happy to have an applicant. Are you breathing? Yup. You’re hired!!!

This whole country is messed up!!

No one wants to pay any one and I DO believe that
is part of the problem here.

Of course there could have been a mechanical failure
(Even that would be related to the problem stated above. Same thing with the bus mechanics. They don’t pay them, so what do they get?????? Just saying…)

I would NEVER put my child on a school bus. I’d drive them myself!!

Now I’m sure there are very competent and very nice people driving many buses. My Sister-In-Law drove a school bus for years. BUT ALL it takes is ONE MORON!!!!

          1. You and I could have a very interesting discussion – although we would simply just agree with each other πŸ™‚

My SIL had a job (he no longer does) that required driving elderly patients. I know they did an RMV check. I would thing something that simple would be done every year but then it would cost money and take from the businesses profits. You are right that…When businesses pay nothing, they will get nothing – not to mention that is probably the single biggest contributor to our economic ills. But I won’t get into that….or did I just get into it πŸ˜‰

  19. Nice NW wind blowing, negating any chance of a Sea Breeze at least for now.
We’ll see IF that changes later.

As of 11AM, already up to 68 at Logan and 69 at Norwood. Definitely destined
for the 70s. Very sunny out as well. Another Beauty!!

      1. Hey congrats, Longshot!! And unless you mean someone else, OS, I have just shy of a month until I hit the magic number…..but remember, I really am only 49 πŸ™‚

  20. well, finally opening the pool today, this is actually late for us, be putting the chemicals in and everything as well should still be able to go in to the pool by memorial day, though will be cold as we will not have had the solar cover on it we need to totally redo the patio that we did, this winter did a beating on it and it literally sunk.. πŸ™ The fense needs another layer of white stain.

  21. Ok, I GIVE UP!)@*#(*!(#*(!*)@#

Look at these observations from Logan:

    201654 FEW060 SCT110 10 62 46 1311 150 201554 FEW055 10 64 44 0809G17 150 201454 FEW050 SCT250 10 68 38 3213G21

How does it go from WIND at 320 degrees up to 17 mph to 080 Degrees in ONE STINKEN HOUR???

    What is going on????????????????

For what it is worth, even here in Roxbury and certainly at home in JP wind is
    NOT, NOT, NOT EAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hadi, what’s it like over there on Congress Street?

    1. That didn’t show well. Try this:

      201654 FEW060 SCT110 10 62 46 1311
      201554 FEW055 10 64 44 0809G17
      201454 FEW050 SCT250 10 68 38 3213G21

        1. I don’t have the type of luck. Generally speaking, when
I attend a game, they lose! But since it’s TK’s birthday,
perhaps, just perhaps, the trend will be reversed.

I’ll find HADI and we’ll do a WHW WIN DANCE on top
of the Sox Dug Out! Watch for us! πŸ˜†
