The Week Ahead

7:45AM

Today begins a new week, or continues a long weekend, depending on how you look at it. I would like to take a moment to remember all those who have served this country. We must never forget the sacrifices made for our freedom.

I hope everybody has a safe and happy Memorial Day, regardless of your plans.

Regarding those plans, some of the early ones will be impacted by wet weather, but there is less of a chance that later ones will be, as we get a somewhat-active warm front through here this morning with showers (more around than I would have expected), and then just potentially pop up a spot thunderstorm in a few locations later today in warm and slightly unstable air. It will end up feeling like summer today. But that does not last…

The overall pattern is one of troughing in the Northeast and that will be evident this week. A disturbance helping to re-carve this trough will drop a cold front southward through New England early Tuesday and a wave of low pressure will then ride along it later Tuesday, with some wet weather. This will create a sharp drop in temperature from the briefly warm weather coming in now, and then set up a chilly northeast wind into Wednesday when lots of clouds will linger. A bit of drier air will work in Thursday with some hope for at least some sunshine, but still on the cool side. The next frontal system arrives from the west Friday when there will be a shower threat. This front pushes offshore by Saturday but upper level low pressure may delay complete clearing and allow for a chance of a few showers. Optimistically, a bubble of high pressure should provide for a decent Sunday (but at day 7, adjustments may be necessary).

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Mostly cloudy with episodes of showers during the morning. Partly sunny this afternoon with isolated showers or thunderstorms possible by late day. Highs ranging from the 60s South Coast and Cape Cod to 80-85 most interior locations. Wind W 10-20 MPH with higher gusts, especially this afternoon.

TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Slight chance of a passing shower or t-storm early. Lows 60-65. Wind W 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers developing, especially during the afternoon hours. Highs 65-70 early, falling toward 60 inland and to the 50s coast during the afternoon. Wind W to variable around 10 MPH becoming NE to E 5-15 MPH and gusty by afternoon.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 50. High 60.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Low 52. High 65.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 55. High 70.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of showers. Low 52. High 66.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 55. High 73.

  1. Thank you TK. With great gratitude for those who have given their all in order to make this country great and to their families for all they have sacrificed……

  2. A cousins wife commented on FB. Her husband, father and father-in-law all served our country. She reminded us that a few showers and some Memorial Day plan interruptions do not compare to the sacrifices of those this day is set aside to remember and honor. I wanted to pass it along because it puts it all in perspective.

  3. Good morning!!! I thought mid 80’s today? What happen it’s cloudy and looks like rain, what is going on? Have a good day everyone πŸ™‚

    1. 80-85 away from the South Coast. Don’t try to verify the high temps at 10 in the morning. πŸ™‚

  4. We went to the beach bc that’s all we heard this week was a summery day for the beach on Friday, there thousands of people hear at Narragansett and eves dropping on people conversation walking by me not happy, and stating there never right, no disrespect to tk or anyone, just saying, thanks tk for your hard work, I think we r just gonna drive back and try to go to park or something ugh πŸ™‚

    1. Several Mets yesterday pointed out that this am would not be great and that there would be more sunny breaks this pm. Can’t count on a forecast 100 percent on Friday for Monday πŸ™‚

      1. C’mon north it’s not a snow rain line, is it gonna be sunny or not, there headlines on news was it’s gonna be a beach day, they didn’t say but make sure u check with us on Monday, anyways it’s a bunch of you know what. Good day πŸ™‚

        1. Charlie,

Sometimes it’s good to have some common sense and
look out the window before making decisions. πŸ˜€

          1. If I didn’t have any common sense I would have not left the last 2 days to go to where it’s sunny πŸ™‚

            1. Since when does following the headlines on the news prove to be a good idea? Most of the people on the news cannot even SPEAK correctly (especially lately). πŸ˜›

      2. Barry pointed it out last night at 6 and 11 that there was a lot of clouds and showers upstream that would most likely make at least the first half of the day so great.

          1. click on satellite loop above. Looks like Boston
area is in a cloud free zone. πŸ˜†

  5. I would like to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day and be thankful, good day everyone πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you TK for all you do!! And heartfelt thanks to all of the men and women who serve or have served this great country.

    1. Quick! Cancel your plans for the entire day for a 15 minute warm frontal shower! And watch out! There might be one more shower behind that one. Cancel your plans for the entire week! πŸ˜€

      1. Already cancelled today’s plans along with the 1,000’s of beach goers that thought today was a beach day

        1. And if it was sunny you’d all have been complaining about the wind. You’re not gonna fool me. πŸ™‚

          1. I know a bunch of people that still went to the beach. And if you are going to plan a beach outing in MAY, it’s risky anyway. They will have a decent afternoon there by May standards. I don’t think 1000s of people canceled beach plans today and if so… waaah, waaahhhhhh, I’ll send them the Wha-mbulance. Too bad. You’re still alive with freedom to do many other things.

  6. Lovely sunshine after brief rain. Was 72 and nice summer feel when I was out a bit ago. Watching gnomeo and Juliet with grandson, mac and daughter.

  7. As is typical with warm front activity at this time of year, the showers are most numerous in the early to mid morning and activity will tend to fade as the day goes on.

Too many people trying to verify the entire day’s forecast on the events of the first couple hours of the morning. Big mistake.

People, we are near a dividing line, as stated in many previous updates. And a 20-40 mile shift in the position of this line makes all the difference in the world.

Charlie, do you want us to have the position of this line down 5 days in advance? It’s time to stop making final plans that far in advance. We live in a place where weather changes and sometimes prognosticating it can be just a bit of a challenge. But I am more than happy to have a “you be the meteorologist” day and I nominate you to produce a 7 day forecast that verifies exactly right (no updates allowed). Ready for the challenge my friend? πŸ™‚

Most areas will turn quite sunny this afternoon. Days are long this time of year. Give it a chance. The warm air is just getting in here now.

    1. Overall, I will never understand having weather be the determining factor in ones life. Specifically, I’ve said before that I know first hand the amount of work that goes into making a blog successful. And WHW is beyond successful because of the time and effort and knowledge you put into it. That doesn’t even touch on the fact that we all know weather and we all know its unpredictability in New England.

As always thanks for what you do and for being you

    1. It won’t shine much until we get the rest of the mid level stuff through here.

  8. 72 here in Hingham. Breezy. Sun and clouds…I love days like today..then again I like the weather on most days.

  9. The tornado warning in ME made me curious. I see it runs along the. ME/NB border. Would a US warning not extend into Canada even if the threat were there?

  10. Oh look, it’s suddenly 76 in Boston and 78 here and climbing rather quickly. What happened?! πŸ˜‰

    1. 72.9 here. A couple of brief showers just rolled through. That should be about it.
I expect temperature to soar any minute now. πŸ˜€

  11. Sorry all,

It is now 3:31 PM and temperature here is 75.4.
No bright sun, only peeks here and there.
    It AIN’T GONNA make 80. πŸ˜€

      1. WHW did word it that it left room for 70s along the immediate shore, having mentioned that the 80-85 would be over interior MA and NH. πŸ™‚

  12. I just went back to look. The only day that I forecast “mostly sunny” for today was last Wednesday, 5 days ago. Every other forecast ranged from some form of partly cloudy to some form of mostly cloudy. Hmm.

    1. Tk, no one is busting your chops at least not I.

I did, however, expect it to be warmer today. Oh well.

4:20 Pm 76.5, pretty much high for the day. πŸ˜€

      1. I totally agree. NO ONE is complaining and if there is a stray complainer he best remember I was a lion(ess) in my previous life and we know how protective they are πŸ˜†

  13. To be honest I didn’t really feel anyone was busting me personally. I think I was sticking up for the weather community in general while also realizing and pointing out that there are still problems with both communication and interpretation of weather info, regardless of accuracy. πŸ™‚ And I fully admit that today’s forecast was not the best one. I think I had the cloud cover closer than many, but I did not expect as many showers for as long as they occurred. That was the result of the boundary and disturbance being further south than all best available info had us believing.

      1. Now that was a BUST!

It is now 76.3 here and slowly coasting down from the high
        of 76.5.

        1. I agree. I’m not tooting my own horn but I had my serious doubts that the immediate coast would get that warm even with more sun and the west wind. The upstream source region of the west wind was not THAT warm, so there was a disadvantage right away. And even with the west wind, at Logan they stick out into the water and the temp sensor is impacted by the tiniest little shifts in the wind. Most of the beaches would have not made it beyond the mid 70s today even with sunshine and offshore wind the vast majority of the time.

    1. Tk you run a great blog that I like very much, you update when needed, I’m a complainer and I’m sorry for that, I’m sorry it comes off as a jerk, but just wanted to say thanks

Still mostly cloudy here but temp is 73.4 degrees, not bad at all πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks Charlie. πŸ™‚ The majority of the time I poke back in good fun.

People usually know when I’m ruffled. πŸ˜›

  14. Somehow we managed to go to the beach, visit a sprinkler park, and go fishing in this awful weather. No complaints here.

  15. Had a nice BBQ and enjoyed the parade that marched right near my street today! πŸ™‚ The trees were “shedding” their polleny-leafy-thingys all over my yard and into the food πŸ˜‰ But all went well otherwise πŸ˜€

    1. Sounds as if it was a special day. Those tree greens do get In everything, don’t they? I think the little black caterpillar droppings have finally stopped here which is a welcome relief.

      1. One of those “droppings” landed on my head the other day…I thought it was a raindrop…but then I was informed otherwise.. πŸ˜› Beuuulech! πŸ˜‰

  16. TK, I knew you’d have today well forecasted !

It WAS a great weekend, with great weather.

I have to call out WBZ radio, AM 1030, for having forecasts running all day yesterday of mostly sunny today. Even this morning, it was replaced with morning showers then mostly sunny.

Most on the campground, who only have radio to listen to, were all wondering where mostly sunny was.

It wasnt until around 2pm that I heard Danielle Niles come on and say cloudy periods with a few showers. But BZ shouldnt need til 2pm to get that straight.

Anyhow, it was a fun weekend. A few people on the campground were showing us hail pictures yesterday, which looked pretty neat.

    1. Glad you had a nice time. Our son plans to start taking his son camping this summer. He will be 8 months old. I was telling him about your family

    2. Well you’re giving me more credit than I deserve, but thank you. πŸ™‚

I didn’t quite get the showers right. The warm front and energy coming over the ridge was more active than I expected, and I usually play them up based on past experience.

I could have done better on the sky this afternoon. I’d have expected it to start with clouds and trend sunnier, instead it started with showers and trending to partly sunny at times but still a whole lot of cloudcover of the middle and high variety. Granted, it did warm up, maybe not reaching the full potential for obvious reasons. It was not the best forecast overall, but again it was a case of pretty much everybody missed it. What does that tell you? There are still plenty of deficiencies in this science.

      1. Last I recall, I asked you a few days ago how morning would be. You said you thought it would be ok but to check back because these systems (not correct wording I know) can arrive sooner than expected. We made plans subject to change on your advice and thanks to you had a plan B that was just as fun as plan A πŸ™‚

        1. I second that Vicki, because way back on Friday I recall TK mentioning that Monday may not be great ! 72 hrs advanced notice.

          1. I remember being worried about the over the ridge issue.

I guess I just need to put these caveats into my discussions. The problem is, some people will end up accusing me of waffling or ‘covering my ass’, when in reality, I’m just being honest about what I think. Not every forecast is easily set in stone.

            1. That’s exactly what you said and anyone with a modicum (my mom loved that word and it just popped into my head) of sense reads the thread as time gets near and that is exactly where you put your concern

  17. Plan B for me was go to the movies to see X-Men πŸ™‚

Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day! 10 days, eeeeek!

  18. By the way Sox were down 6-1 today and came back to WIN 8-6 against the Braves. Losing streak over at 10!

    1. I predicted that the losing streak would end on Sunday ……………… LAST Sunday. Oops. πŸ™‚

  19. Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend! I can’t wait until we start seeing 80’s in the forecast, not the upper 50’s!
    Enjoy your day, all! πŸ™‚

    1. I think you have a very special day to enjoy, shotime!!! Happy Birthday to you πŸ™‚

              1. I probably knew that and may have said this but I am sure that you are aware and your wife will confirm that it is in fact a very special day for birthdays πŸ™‚ Paul McCartney also !!!

  20. Good morning!! Nice morning, I got on the attleboro express train to Boston, it’s suppose to take 36 min’s, it’s taken 1 hr 6 min’s to this point, and we r just to ruggkes. Why? Had to wait for 2 trains to pass on our tracks, then the train lost power, a good hr and 15 min ride, probably should have drove in idk, yes I’m just complaining, it’s just frustrating that I’m only late bc of the mbta, good day everyone, my day gas started out on wrong foot so far πŸ™‚

  21. The lawns are just beginning a little drought stress, it doesn’t mean we r in a drought, but rather we haven’t had any significant rain in a short while, with that high sun angle is strong, so start watering your lawn every morning 35 min’s per zone/area πŸ™‚

  22. Good morning.

As of 8AM, the front was by Boston. At 9AM temperatures are responding to
the cooler air. I HATE this kind of weather. Gimmie yesterday, even with the clouds.

When, oh When, will the CRAP FEST end??????????????????

I’ll bet the High Temperature at Logan tomorrow will be 55 OR LESS!!!!!

    1. Man, that’s tough OS. We’re sitting pretty at 76 here in Wrentham, we’ll hit 80 easily, maybe more. Bit of a forecast bust for us here, we were not expected to get this warm, at least in the way I interpreted the forecast.

      1. Charles it’s not even summer yet so why would you be counting or even thinking about it. Man oh man.

  23. The temperature contrast is going to be something where eastern New England could be the 50s and 60s and western parts could be in the 80s if enough sunshine happens. The sunshine out there will be what I like to call self destructing sunshine and add to the instability. Fortunatley its more peak a boo sunshine where I am right now.
NWS out of Taunton was mentioning helicity and potential for supercells should the destablization gets fully realized. I never like reading helicity and supercells in a discussion since that COULD sometimes leading to rotating storms.

    1. I’d be surprised. “Generally” speaking, back door cold fronts don’t
often produce Severe Weather let alone even garden variety thunder storms.
It’s usually just a wind shift with a temperature drop. Sometimes they do
produce T-storms, but most times they just pass through with no fan-fare.

Perhaps, by the time the front reaches Western sections with the heating
of the day, something WILL actually pop. We shall see. πŸ˜€

      1. From the SPC:

  24. Down to 59 at Logan with 1/2 vis in FOG!!! Here it comes!!! The CRAPFEST!!!!

    271346 VV002 0.5 FG 59 55 0610

Inland areas as close as Norwood and Taunton are up to 75 already and climbing.

    1. No fog here at the office, although I can see LOW clouds moving in off
      to the SouthEast.

  25. I’ve given some thought to when, in New England, the “core” of summer sets in and lasts. “Core” being consistent warm summer weather, with truly the rare cool, clammy interruption.

Combined with data and some recollection, I’m convinced the true “core” of summer in this unique part of the world is from around June 27th until August 5th.

Its about the same length of the dog days, it just starts a bit earlier and ends a bit earlier than 7/3 thru 8/11.

My thinking is that it really seems to take until about a week after the solstice to get the ocean temp towards 60F and remove enough of the Hudson Bay Ice to really combine with the warming atmosphere to secure 80F plus consistently region wide.

I end it after about a week in August because then the cumulative day to day impact of losing more than 5 degrees of sun angle starts to lessen the opportunity for days to consistently be warm to hot.

Yes, August is still uncomfortable because it tends to have the highest humidity, but it can have days that the temp and dewpt are both 72F and its showery and/or rainy. My “core” summer definition is capturing consistent, fairly sunny weather (a PM storm is ok πŸ™‚ ), with temps 80F or higher and I would submit that is btwn 6/27 and 8/5 around these parts.

    1. My recollections are nowhere near as scientific as yours, Tom, but I would absolutely agree. Re August, I have always thought of it as a month where it might be quite warm but the cooler (somewhat) nights and even days begin to appear. There are always exceptions but I like your thinking.

      1. I re-read and am laughing out loud. I didn’t mean there are exceptions where I don’t like your thinking….there are exceptions to the weather during the times you mentioned!!

    2. I’m in close agreement. I can’t really argue with your start date, but
I have always observed that the end date is more like 8/10. I used to always
take vacation the 1st week of August and it was consistently warm. Wait a week and ALL bets are off. In fact I used to say that AUTUMN started on 8/11. πŸ˜†

What’s a week among friends. I am in general agreement.

There are, of course, fluctuations in this, but generally speaking you’re right
      on target.

    1. Works for me. I don’t mind the heat because HHH is such a part of summer. But I love mornings such as this when I can throw open windows and doors first thing and it smells like summer.

That said, I know JR and anyone else is aware that it is a guess at best even though it may be based on data. I figure we will know sometime in September what kind of summer it was πŸ˜‰

    2. Big WOOF! πŸ˜† 😈

Do you believe JR? If you do, I have some swamp land in Louisiana to sell you.

Now, that being said, who knows? Perhaps he will be correct????

BUT I’d believe TK and Barry long before I’d believe JR.

      1. I’m not a fan of seven but I’m starting to think when the hell does this cold crap exit . They say it was a warm may is that corect . If the summer will not be hot I would rather skip my favorite time of year.

      2. I am not sure I would believe anyone who said it will be a cool summer – but I suspect JR and anyone who does make the comment knows that smart folks know it is speculation. I’d actually be surprised if TK were to make that comment. But then I surprise myself often πŸ˜‰

  26. How likly do you think that area of high pressure to stick around and break this pattern

  27. Low cloud deck firmly in place. Fof beginning to develop. NE wind HOWLING!

DISGUSTING WEATHER!!! New England Weather at it’s absolute worst!!!!!

I do NOT possess. Sorry, that’s the way it is.

Today is May 27th. It should NOT
be 56 Degrees outside. Yes I know it happens and is to be expected during the Spring from time to time and yes SUMMER does not arrive till 6/20. So what.

I just came in from lunch. Was out WITHOUT a jacket. I was perfectly comfortable. I think there is something wrong with me.

Ahh Just suck it up! πŸ˜€

  28. 11AM OBS in for Logan.

Front has made it past Norwood
Just passed N. Smithfield RI with a wind shift to 020.
    Not yet in Worcester.

  29. I just wish for 3 to 5 sunny days with temperatures in the 80s no humidity , want my pool to warm up.

  30. Hit a high of 77.3 and now the temp has started to fall, only slight to 75.9 but the wind shift has come through in North Attleboro. Norwood down to 60!

  31. Just a thought look how long it’s been taking us to shake this coolness louzy weather . When it turns warm maybe it will stay that way for a good portion of the winter. I would trade my love of summer for a mild winter here in the northeast like a couple of years ago.

  32. Going to be watching the skies across my area as the sun is out in full force and the SPC just placed my area under a slight risk for severe weather. I can’t remember a situation where a backdoor cold front caused strong storms to develop.

  33. How much precip OS you thinking tonight and tomorrow? Need to decide if I should water the garden and vege plants. I think I need to water πŸ™‚

          1. Oddly, John, I think watering is good for the soul. It is one of those escapes where no thought is required but is productive and still relaxing

    1. IF one is to believe the 12Z NAM about a whopping .05 inches.
      Water my friend, water.

I don’t water the grass. IF it chooses to go brown, so be it. πŸ˜†

  34. Am I allowed to point out that its in the 80s in western Mass, most of CT, Albany and NYC.

I think a few storms are firing in southern VT.

That is quite a temp contrast, I’d think something might pop in southwestern New England.

  35. I think that is what prompted to SPC to upgrade for areas in southwestern New England to a slight risk. This sun has been out pretty much all day at least where I am which is creating instablity. I will say it is not really humid. I am wondering down there if a sea breeze front will show up and act as another lift mechanism in addition to back door cold front.

  36. That is the first mention of a possible tornado in part of the slight risk area. Last week that EF 3 tornado happened near the Albany, NY area when the storm prediction center did not give a probablity on tornadoes since it was less than 2%. I remember back in the Brideport, CT tornado in June 2010 the probablity was 2%. I am not saying a tornado will happen in that area but the fact is there is a low risk of one.

    1. I am kind of surprised the watch isn’t a little further east where the slight risk is.
This back door cold front means business and when it comes through it is going to feel a lot different for the areas that are
      warm today.

  37. 2PM,

    Boston 55
    Beverly 54
    Blue Hill 55
    Norwood 58
    Plymouth 58
    Manchester NH 58
    Taunton 67
    Worcester 69
    Springfield 82
    Windsor Locks CT 86
    Pittsfield 81

Well you get the idea. πŸ˜€

  38. We were at NWH at 11:45. Temp walking in door was 72. Temp walking out the door at 12:15 was 63. And it actually smelled as if we were at the ocean. It is now 55 in Framingham.

    1. Well there ya go. Just saying!

Enjoy as there isn’t a damn thing we can do about it.

New England at its finest! πŸ‘Ώ

    1. It’s like a double squeeze coming from the NW and the NE at the same time. πŸ˜€

  39. Apparently, a tornado warning for a storm in Vermont, that according to radar, is capable of producing a tornado.

  40. Are backdoor fronts unique to NE or do they occur in other locations in the CONUS?

The backdoor fronts do provide nice relief for Boston during summer heatwaves, though. πŸ™‚

  41. 49 degrees right now, cloudy with east wind , you can clearly see where the back door cold front is located πŸ™

  42. Just a had a very brief heavy downpour in canton. The temp was low today on the course but the golf game is heating up, fired a 2 over 38 πŸ˜€

      1. NWS said HRRR was very aggressive with rainfall tonight in eastern New England. I think from looking at the radar it may be right and a lot of times it is.

  43. Even as far away as Maynard, stow, wayland etc, the lightening is lighting up the entire sky. Thunder sounds as if it is tending toward the rolling kind and fairly consistent. My guess is rainshine is pretty close.

  44. Interesting month of May. Very few completely dry days (24 hour periods without any precipitation). I only counted 6. But, the rain we got was mostly light and intermittent, and therefore often plentiful sunshine on days with rain.

I did find the forecasts to be unusually inaccurate this month. Yesterday’s weather illustrates this well. I biked 35 miles in Rhode Island, and it rained on and off almost the entire day. Not heavy, but still. Also the temperature barely got above 70 until very late in the afternoon, despite forecasts of low 80s and sunshine. On the flipside there were many days this month that were forecast to be gloom and doom and turned out to be quite fine.

  45. Phone went off with flash flood warning. Glad I did not water as I had a feeling we would get more rain than some forecasted.

  46. Only 13 degrees away from it being cold enough to snow.

If it comes down hard enough……..

  47. Good morning.

The 12Z NAM was WAY off on total rainfall for last night as it had about .05 inch.
We had a non-severe prolonged thunderstorm with good thunder and downpours lasting a good 1/2 hour or more. And the COLD!!! Holy Crap is it COLD!!! 49.6 and NOT going up a whole lot today, perhaps what 52 or 53 tops?

WHEN will it warm up. OH not for nothing, but the hinted 90 by BB for Monday is now a MYTH! As any thought of warm weather is!!

I sure hope Retrac’s Summer forecast is WRONG!!!!

  48. Truck temp was. 49 driving in this morning. This just Is not right as we’re getting screwed.

    1. Yup. So what else is new. SPRING SUCKS around these parts, I just hope
this pattern breaks soon. The sooner, the better!!

I wouldn’t care if it were 49 now and warm to the 70s, but NO! It ain’t gonna warm anytime soon!!
