The Chill Is On (Again)

7:29AM

That was not a back-door cold front. It was a weather system oriented in such a way that its cold front came from the north and northeast. The orientation of the system was determined by the upper level flow and track of the low pressure system parent to the front. But nit-picking aside, however you define it, it’s chilly, and it’s been aided by the still chilly water of the Atlantic. This very cool air will hold today as high pressure starts to build down from the north, but it will take all day to dry out the moisture we have in place. So, drizzle and showers are possible in the morning, and clouds will hang on much of the day but will start to break, possibly before the day is over, from north to south. Will anybody see sun before day’s end? I wouldn’t count on it, but I also would not rule it out. Let’s see how lucky we get. Best chance for any sun will be northern MA and southern NH.

High pressure will continue to press southward tonight and Thursday, finally clearing it out. Though it will be milder tomorrow than today will be, we’ll still be in the cool air, but will have the benefit of strong late May sun to warm it up a bit, especially inland.

Oh look, the ocean influence will be all but gone by Friday (unless you live on the Cape or near the South Coast) but just in time for the approach and passage of a cold front. But a good amount of the day may end up nice before the threat of showers and thunderstorms increases west to east.

The cold front the passes on Friday will probably be sluggish to get out of here, along with passing upper level low pressure, meaning that Saturday may start damp and struggle to clear out. With luck, Sunday (the first day of June) will be a very nice day.

Early next week: Looks like a stand off between warm summery air to the southwest and yet another upper level low pressure area off the coast. I know it’s pretty far away, but if you ask me, my money’s on the upper low. Stay tuned…

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Cloudy with areas of drizzle and a chance of showers through midday. Mostly cloudy this afternoon but breaks of sun may appear especially northeastern MA and southern NH later. Highs in the lower to middle 50s. Wind NE 10-20 MPH, becoming N.

TONIGHT: Clearing north to south. Lows upper 30s inland valleys, 40s elsewhere. Wind light N.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs upper 50s immediate coast, 60s elsewhere. Wind light N to NE.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. PM shower/t-storm risk. Low 55. High 70, cooler South Coast and Cape Cod.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers south and east. Low 55. High 65.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 75, cooler coast.

MONDAY & TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Eventual shower threat possible. Lows 50s. Highs 70s, cooler coast.

  1. Thanks tk, today’s high temps will be 20-25 degrees below average, average high is 78 degrees, and average lows are 54 degrees, so we will have lower high temps than our average lows. Every other customer I see, which is quite a few seem to all say, what the hell is going on? šŸ™‚

            1. Oh well. They can leave. I really don’t care. šŸ™‚

I like it here. Adios to the rest of ya. Buhbye!

              Go away šŸ™‚

  2. Charlie, lawn care company question for you. I awoke this morning to the sound of lawn mowers next door. My neighbors have a lawn service and for some reason when they mow, it always seems to be either in the rain or just after a rain and the lawn is very wet. It looks awful after they mow and they leave wet globs of cut grass everywhere. Is there some unwritten rule that companies try not to mow wet lawn or is it just whenever it was scheduled they come out regardless?

  3. Wedding day just somehow creeped up into the 10-day forecast. I won’t start getting worried till 5 days out but it looks wet as of right now šŸ™

    1. I feel for you. I surely hope that you have really fine weather.
      Around here, it’s impossible!!

      1. Thanks OS. I knew early June would be hit or miss but was hoping it would be more hit.

    2. We had pouring rain and then a blizzard on our wedding day and it seems to have brought us wonderful luck – absolutely the most wonderful 35.5 years of my life with many left to go. I will hope that the forecast changes, Ace, as sun is always special too and I know that is what you are all hoping for !!

      1. I can only hope to reach 35 years and more! My boss was telling me the other day he got married on the Cape in the winter thinking it would be safe. Well, they got over a foot of snow and only 40 out of the 200 guests showed up!

        1. I am sure you will have a very long and special marriage and like OS am praying for a perfect wedding day for you and your bride to be.

We had guests from all over U.S. and several from Europe (Mac’s family is very scattered) and they all made it. They actually got a huge kick out of the storm. We had a fieldstone fireplace blazing with an entire wall of glass looking out onto a wooded area.

            1. It was actually a very simple wedding and it was amazing. But I know yours will be equally amazing. I can’t believe the day is here so quickly but suspect it seems even faster to you.

              1. It came so fast for me. My fiance on the other hand…she didn’t think the day would ever get here, lol. She’s had to deal with a lot more of the planning and logistics of keeping her Italian family happy so I can understand šŸ™‚

  4. Thank you TK!! Do you have any rainfall numbers? Or can you point me to where they have accurate numbers please? I don’t think we are in drought but I do see the Sudbury river dropping daily now. Yesterday and today may help.

  5. Joshua, if you’re out there, i saw your post on the last blog. Always enjoy hearing from you and i agree with you 100%. You always seem to find a way to say what most are thinking but in a thoughtful concise way. My only wish is that you posted more often šŸ™‚

    1. Glad you mentioned it, Ace, as I had missed the post. I absolutely agree – I enjoy Joshua’s comments and perspective!!

  6. Logan STUCK at 50 Degrees. Ouch!!!

I need to paint the bathroom tonight. Now I won’t be able to OPEN the damn windows!!
Geez, MAY 28th and Can’t open the windows in the house. How brutal is that!

I generally love the weather around these parts, EXCEPT for April and May!!!!!
AND sometimes into JUNE! Hope not this year!!!

  7. “Oh the weather outside is frightful ……..

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow !!”

    Hey, why not ?

    1. Since it is so cold and was so last night, I wish the downpours turned it
over to SNOW and whitened the ground. Might as well get a record out
      of the MISERY! šŸ˜† šŸ‘æ

  8. What a difference a day makes from summer like weather yesterday to rainy and cooler weather yesterday. Did have a thunderstorm yesterday evening but thankfully it was not to the strength of the storm that hit New Milford and Soutbury where trees and power lines came down.

  9. TK – Are back door cold fronts unique to NE or do they occur in other areas of the CONUS?

I suspect some will be grateful for these fronts come mid-summer during a heat wave, but for now…UGH!

    1. Philip,

I posted on this last evening or I thought I did.

I do believe they are quite common in Eastern Europe and occur
with Building/Expanding Siberian High Pressure Systems.

      1. That would be fine with me since I hate HHH temps, but I would like a nice long lasting warmup before spring ends.

        1. Most don’t say that, they say it’s almost June and we still gotta deal with this, what the hek did new englanders do to deserve this šŸ™‚

          1. They are not being punished for anything.

            It’s WEATHER.

People need to get over it.

            šŸ™‚

  10. What is interesting is that Boston (Logan) reached 74 yesterday before the cold frontal passage.

  11. Am most landscaping companies r crap, they r on a schedule and yes it’s bad to mow while lawn is wet, I’ve gotten into it with many landscapers over the years on properties while they try to mow during rain, a matter of fact, I pick and meet customers landscapers to go over rules about it, most don’t want to come off schedule mainly bc of money, good luck šŸ™‚

  12. Philip: You’re right. 74F was the high at around 9am yesterday morning. It went downhill from there.

Been reading some of the posts on how cool it is. It’s definitely cool. Any time the wind comes in off the ocean in May, you’re going to get a serious cooling effect as the ocean water takes a very long time to warm up. Moreover, there haven’t been many hot days to warm up the water. Hey, it’s snowing (freezing drizzle, snow) on top of Mt. Washington right now, and the low tonight will be around 20F. But, with the exception of today’s temperature, it’s not been unusually cool this month. If my memory is serving me correctly, I recall that in the latter half of May of 2004 and 2005 we had weekends during which the temperature barely got to 50F. TK, please correct me if I’m wrong about this.

What is very interesting is the inversion phenomenon I’ve mentioned once or too many times on this blog: It’s 68F and sunny on the west coast of Ireland. Talk about an inverted world. It doesn’t get to 68F often at all on the west coast of Ireland. My daughter is working there this summer (on a farm), and so she had to let me know how warm it was there.

  13. Here’s the infuriating part ….

    http://weather.gc.ca/data/satellite/hrpt_nque_ir_100.jpg

An IR Satellite picture of eastern Canada, Labrador, etc … located due NORTH of us …. sitting in the sunshine under the high to our north that is part responsible for our damp, cold northeast winds.

Notice the warm temps the IR Satellite is showing as dark land. Temps in the 60s to low 70s. North of us, plenty north of us. Isnt that just lovely šŸ™

      1. Indeed !

Last July, we were up in Nova Scotia and far northeast Nova Scotia at that. Up there, they had similar hot weather during mid July. But, towards about July 20th, as the ridge started to break down, a N to NE surface flow came in one evening off of the Labrador Current and temps plummeted to around 52F. I will NEVER forget that. July 20th ….. 52F !!!!!!

    1. Just was out and am at home now. Down to 48.7 in the middle of the
afternoon on May 28th!!! DISGUSTING! )(*#(*(!&@#&!@*#&!*&@#*!&(@#&

      1. Read Eric Fisher’s latest blog on BZ. He’s trying to make you feel better about the weather OS.

Like TK’s posts, it’s another great post. Looks like it didn’t help many of the bloggers over there. šŸ™‚

  14. Worcester currently sitting at 45 degrees!! INSANE!!

Unless the temperature spikes up some before midnight, Worcester will BREAK
the all time RECORD LOW HIGH TEMPERATURE for this date. šŸ˜ˆ

    1. Won’t be the last record broken this “summer”.

Like in the winter (which we’re still in), the trend is the trend.

  15. I think we need another smile intervention because you guys are out if control. Anyone want to do the honors ??

    1. Not I!! šŸ˜† šŸ˜€ :lol

That’s about ALL I can muster until this CRAP FEST is over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. A couple glasses of wine/margarita’s … etc and this 48F, drizzly stuff will seem 85F and sunny to me. šŸ™‚

  16. We’re having a HEAT WAVE!!! NOT!()&@#$*(&!@*(&#*(!&@(#*&!*@#&*!3

Hanging in there at 47.8 Degrees on this LOVELY evening of May the 28th!!!!

This weather BLOWS!!!! AND it is DEPRESSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sox are ahead 2 to ZIP. HOW the hell they’re playing baseball in this ARCTIC weather, I don’t know. My hands would be frozen off!! I’d hate to hit one off of the handle tonight!!!

  17. Oldsalty you need some consistant warmth or your top is going to blow off. At least I’m semi calm lol.

  18. Hey Vicki found a grub in my back lawn if you call it that on Monday . That’s probably why I’ve had so many birds poking at it.

  19. Wife put the heat on!!! House was 63 when she got home and with the kids we have no choice but to turn it on.

I know it’s frustrating but keep in mind we are still +2 for May so far.

    1. I did too. Mine kept it up all winter when she was home with her broken knee. I will be paying that bill for a while šŸ™‚

  20. Tk’s title sounds like he’s reveling in our misery šŸ™‚ yes Vicki I know you love cloudy drizzling weather on the back deck watching the birds šŸ™‚ playing around goodnight šŸ™‚

      1. Charlie I like all kinds of weather and I’m sorry you do not as I can think of many more things to be upset about. Does it bother you that it doesn’t upset me ?

        1. And you meant to say it Jokingly….I seriously doubt that. But have a wonderful night anyway

          1. Hi Vicki šŸ™‚ I took a beautiful picture of the twilight sky tonight. I may share it to Facebook if you want to see. šŸ™‚

    1. I love TK’s title, actually, just like I love all of his titles because he cleverly words them in such a way that sums everything up, sometimes playing on words and sometimes with a rhyme. This time he was just stating simply that, yes, in fact, it is chilly again. And I like the use of parenthesis. They add personality. šŸ˜‰

    2. Oh yes I get so much enjoyment listening to people whine about the process of the atmosphere keeping us alive and because we don’t have San Diego’s climate. If I wanted San Diego’s weather year round I’d move there. šŸ™‚

      1. And in San Diego you’d be dealing with fires. Call me silly but comparatively I think we have them beat

      2. I “could” be a lot worse than I have been!
Shall I whine some more OR shall I Wine some more?

  21. Now the TV Crapped the bed. High Def tv with a broken On/Off switch.
Can’t turn it on/off manually and then of course NOT with the remote either!!!

It’s been threatening to go for awhile.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    1. After fiddle Fing around with it for more than 2 hours and reading every reasonable tip on line, I got it going. I think all I have done is delay a repair bill.
It’s a capacitor problem or the on/off switch itself. I’d lean towards a capacitor problem as they are not holding the voltage they are supposed to.
      We shall see. šŸ˜€

  22. This pattern is not going anywhere until at least mid June. Awwwwwww! šŸ™‚

  23. You have to enjoy what is provided by Mother Nature. So do I want warm weather, of course but I can’t get upset and frustrated. We have had only 5 days in May in the 50’s this year vs 4 last year and 9 respectively in 2011 and 2012.

    1. Boston was running almost 3 degrees above normal through mid May. I’m really not sure what people want. We have actually been pretty fortunate to have above normal temps with a colder than normal ocean in April and May.

      1. For me personally, its the realization every May and June that its easier to be cooler in New England than it is to be warmer.

Our latitude has had a 65 degree max sun angle for 3+ weeks now and its nearly 70 degrees now. Yet, our corner of the world just cant sustain even 65-70F warmth.

Compare this to most other 42 degree latitude places in the hemisphere and I’d venture to say we have the coolest climate or one of them.

After many months of cold and darkness, its just frustrating to be defeated by the cold Atlantic, still frozen Hudson Bay and somewhat snow covered eastern Canada.

Go out to Chicago, Des Moines Iowa, just to name a few 42 degree north locations, and I’m guessing they’ve surpassed 80F at least a handful of times.

Thats my frustration and as I grow older, I guess I’m just less tolerant to the cold taking up so much of the year. šŸ™‚

        1. Tom,

I agree!! as I grow older, I guess Iā€™m just less tolerant to the cold taking up so much of the year. šŸ™‚

  24. Here’s the irony. We have a stretch of chilly weather and it’s the end of the world, like we’re being punished for living here. Logan Airport, Boston, NEXT TO THE OCEAN, averaged exactly normal temp for April, and through May 28 is running 2.3 degrees ABOVE NORMAL.

Let me repeat that for those who missed it the first time. MAY HAS AVERAGED 2.3 ABOVE NORMAL IN BOSTON for its first four full weeks!

I’m just not sure what the issue is here. It’s actually kind of hilarious.

And for those living in the North Attleboro area, Providence RI, quite representative of the area, is averaging a full 2 degrees above normal for May.

Yes, it’s warmer than normal this spring, folks. Oh and did I forget to mention it’s also been about 0.40 inch drier than normal for April and May combined for Boston? Yup, mild AND dry. Reality check time!

    Have a nice day šŸ˜€

    1. I love to bitch about the cold. It’s just what I do. šŸ™‚

And in the meantime, since we have runaway global warming, I’ve raised expectations. šŸ™‚

    2. It just tells ya we r warm blooded creatures, eventually we all want warmth, it’s in our DNA šŸ™‚ nobody wants a 48 degree day in almost June tk, every single time it hits 48 degrees in almost June, new englanders will bitch and complain, every time!! Get used to it šŸ™‚ we don’t like cold, we don’t like cloudy weekends weekend after weekend, it’s actually hilarious how cloudy and cool it’s been, not the ideal conditions for a warm blooded human šŸ™‚

  25. Holy crap!! The suns out!!! Omg!! I guess this is our treat in almost June? Mid 60’s for highs in almost June? Hope everyone has a good day šŸ™‚

    1. Charlie I have a sod question for you that I hope you can answer. I am 2 1/2 weeks into having new sod. It looks great and is getting plenty of water from the sprinkler system.

I would like to put down grub control, when is a good time?
Should I put down weed control?
What should I use for fertilizer. I know Scott’s has a 4 part system. Should I use that?

      Thanks in advanced.

      1. Apply grub preventative, not control/killer in 2-3 weeks or end of June, you shouldn’t be getting many weeds, I probably would just spot treat all the weeds, but a granular weed control will work, but be careful applying it lbs etc etc, I heard mixed results on the home Scott’s 4 step, most important is to continue on your normal watering schedule for the next 8 weeks šŸ™‚

  26. I think the couple degrees above normal in boston and surrounding areas for may is a bit deceiving. Many of the above normal days hit the highs for the day either during the early mornings or very late in the day. The daily high temps dont take into account what the temps were for the majority of the daylight hours. Some days we could have hit a high of 75 but first thing in the AM only for the rest of the day to be in the 50s.

  27. I will admit, there have been some really nice spring days, but theres been zero consistency. We cant seem to string together a few nice days, its been one nice day surrounded by 2 crappy ones.

  28. I don’t think 37 degrees in the morning at the end of May is normal tk. I assume records were broken last night.

  29. I don’t mind ppl bitching about the cold or heat so much as I like to make fun of it sometimes (in a good natured way). What I don’t get is the way its turning into some epidemic that something is always wrong with the weather. šŸ˜›
