That’s Spring!

10:40PM

50 in Boston, 80 in Fitchburg at the same time this afternoon. 46 in Boston, 77 in North Adams at the same time this evening. That’s Spring in New England, and these contrasts are especially pronounced when you have a very warm air mass trying to move in, and being met with resistance from a still-cold North Atlantic Ocean. You don’t need me to tell you how cold the ocean still is if you  live near the water today, and were under a bank of low clouds & fog with chilly air, as areas well inland felt a bit like summer…

So, what’s coming up? Not quite an exact repeat Wednesday, but some similarities. The warm air will start to win out in more areas than it did on Tuesday, so areas that stayed in the 50s today will warm at least to the 60s tomorrow, with some reaching 70 or higher, provided the wind is not blowing with some trajectory off the water. I believe that shower activity will be minimized tomorrow, but cannot be completely ruled out. The main action will still be well west of New England with a cold front. This front is expected to cross the region during Thursday, which will be a warm day pretty much everywhere, but with a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Later this week, expect a cool-down, but not with total sunshine, as a pool of chilly air has to cross the region from west to east. This usually means some cloud development, and we will probably see that both Friday & Saturday. And it’s still several days out, but Sunday looks like it will turn out nice.

  1. Good morning ! Warm front is through Marshfield this AM, with a fairly steady SSW wind, temps near 60F and the DP’s not far behind. It feels like summer. Notice Mt. Washington is 45F this AM, would love to see how warm things could get if the sun made an appearance. Glad we have the new, modern Garden….the old Garden with this mild wx and humidity would be fogged in tonight. Have a good day everyone !!

    1. Yeah our garden and plants r all planted throughout the property, it really looks, smells and even feels like early summer, sun just came out here in N.Attleboro and it’s getting warmer by the minute, Ive had my ac on for 2 days straight now 🙂

  2. Beautiful morning in Framingham. Can anyone help me with the chance of rain here? We thought it was going to rain so put down fertilizer yesterday on the lawn. I can’t decide whether to water now 🙁

    1. Vicki, if I were you I would water it. When it comes to thunderstorms its a real hit or miss situation.

  3. 74 degrees and partly sunny in N.Attleboro, it’s also very humid, have a great day everyone 🙂

  4. Thanks Coastal – I was afraid that was the best solution 🙂

I just received breaking news and will paste below – as if the tornado areas need more bad weather.

“National Weather Service issues “dangerous situation” tornado watch for parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi.

A “particularly dangerous situation watch” is issued when there is a high risk of multiple strong tornadoes. “

  5. Was checking out the Tornadoes on radar in Mississippi and Alabama, They seem pretty large in scale and moving quick. A lot of action going on down there.

  6. Two days in a row the storm prediction center has issued a high risk for severe weather in parts of the south. For us that front should weaken as it approaches with the marine influences so I am not expecting any severe weather here tomorrow.

  7. Once again it looks like the severe weather will remain to the west of SNE as a tornado watch is up for parts of Upstate NY. As I said earlier I think the storms will weaken as they approach our area due to the marine influence.

  8. As of now, it is 77 degrees in Boston with a brisk SW wind…what a difference from yesterday! 🙂

  9. Wind direction the key and when you get those SW winds that pumps in the warm temperatures.

  10. What an afternoon in Boston!! The nice thing this time of year when the humidity builds, it does not get trapped in the house!!

  11. While we are enjoying a quiet evening the people dealing with tornadoes are not. Lets keep a good thought for those people particulary the ones in Alabama. I just saw a picture from Tuscalousa and I am not expert and maybe someone on here if they saw the picture could chime in but that looked like EF 3 EF 4 damage.

  12. Hi all! Was out all day. Made it home in time for the game. A nail-biter. Come on Bruins, pull this out for us!!

Another not-so-great sky condition forecast for me today. Certainly more sun than I expected, again. Oh well. Best way to be wrong I guess. 🙂

  13. TK, there are some “issues” that I would like you to mention in your next update:

    1. Thunderstorm timeline and severity for Thursday.
    2. Royal Wedding forecast (last I heard quite showery & windy from E/NE).
    3. CPC outlook for the first half of May; well below normal temps and above normal precip for NE and much of the CONUS?

    Thanks. 🙂

    1. Since I wasn’t able to update until well past my bedtime, I will answer your request here briefly, and expand upon it in an update Thursday afternoon.

      1. I expect only isolated storms during the day unless you are well west of Boston, i.e., western MA. Thursday evening some showers and storms will come through but they will be relatively weak because of unfavorable dynamics including a stabilizing southerly wind.
      2. Last week I mentioned that Friday looked like the only wet day there in a stretch of mostly dry weather. This still looks to be the case. Umbrellas a-plenty will be seen.
      3. I’m not sure the extent of it, but I can see the East, especially Northeast, being cool & damp overall for the first 2 weeks of May.

  14. I think the thunderstorms will be MINOR tomorrow with rumbles of thunder but I don’t see anything severe. I see as the cold front approaches the line of thunderstorms should weaken due to the marine influence however CT River Valley west could see some strong storms. I have felt that way for the past few days and the SPC has us in the general risk category for thunderstorms with the slight risk NY State south tomorrow.
Getting ready to see if the Bruins could win in OT. My prediction Mark Recchi with the game winning goal.

  15. Red Sox lost again 5-4 and back to their old habits. I suppose give them credit for battling back to tie after being down 4-0. 🙁
