Pop Ups / Iffy Weekend

2:17AM

The next 2 days we will be under the influence of a very weak high pressure area but still in between a frontal boundary and another trough of low pressure to the west. The energy from the west will be enough to set off a round or 2 of pop up showers and possible thunderstorms each of the next 2 afternoons (today and Friday). Most areas will not see anything as coverage will be isolated to scattered, but anywhere that does see something could experience a downpour. The greatest threat for these pop ups will be along and northwest of a line from Providence RI to Boston MA.

By Saturday, the offshore frontal boundary will back up toward the coast, likely increasing the cloudiness over the region. The wildcard is how much rain gets involved, and there will be the chance of areas of rain, but at this stage my guess is that the greatest chance for this rain will be over Cape Cod and southeastern MA and less so elsewhere. Sunday, the boundary, though weak, will likely push further northwestward into the region, and it should be a muggy day with lots of clouds, some sun, and occasional showers and thunderstorms. This may linger into Monday as the front washes out over eastern New England. By Tuesday into midweek, weak high pressure should return and bring fair weather.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, especially inland areas. Highs 74-82, coolest South Coast. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows in the 60s. Wind SSW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, again mainly inland. Highs 75-83, coolest South Coast. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain at times, especially southeastern MA. Low 64. High 78.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Episodes of showers/thunderstorms. Low 68. High 82.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Low 68. High 84.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 64. High 81.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 64. High 82.

  1. Vicki,

I did email Eric yesterday and he sent me a very nice email back.
I don’t think it is appropriate to post here. But basically he appreciated
the support and the kind words and was concerned about the warning or should
I say lack of warning on that Revere tornado. πŸ˜€

    1. Boston is OH so Fortunate to have Eric Fisher.
Between him and Barry, Channel for has HIT the Jackpot!!!

    2. Thank you very much for letting me/us know. I continue to be impressed by not only his knowledge but with his willingness to respond to his viewers. He is indeed a wonderful addition to the BZ team

  2. Well I didn’t see that trade coming…I really thought they would keep Lester and wouldn’t deal him since no team would be crazy enough to send over good players for a rental. Boy was I wrong! Lester will be missed, but getting a middle of the order power hitter who plays the outfield is HUGE

    1. Wow, wow, wow !!

Signed thru 2015, not a free agent though til 2018.

Sonny Gray and Lester, first 2 in each series, they should win it all.

      1. You would think they would be the favorites. Huge ballpark thought, curious to see Lester’s numbers over time without the benefit of Fenway. No way they will re-sign Lester though.

    2. You could have mentioned this:

Boston sending ace left-hander Jon Lester to Oakland for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

      1. Yoenis Cespedes is NOT all that great.
Hitting .256 with 67 rbi and 17 homers.
        OK, but no great shakes.

NOT AN EQUAL TRADE in my opinion.

        1. Lets be honest, they weren’t gonna get much more than that. Frankly im shocked they got what they got, but if they had no intention if signing Lester, i think they got a good deal.

          1. Oh, to be sure. But it’s clearly NOT a fair swap.

I just for the life of me can’t figure out WHY
they wouldn’t sign him. He’s one of the most
            DURABLE pitchers out there. Management
has become cheap and they are AFRAID of
            long contracts.

        2. His home runs should increase some at Fenway and perhaps his average a wee bit, but doesn’t change my mind.

  3. I’m up for a pattern change.

Its been weeks and weeks of western ridge, eastern trof.

It would be nice to have something new.

    1. It “could” end up one of these weekends that turns out to be MUCH
better than forecasted. OR it could be a washout!

  4. Pattern change = getting rid of the cyclic troughs dropping out of eastern Canada. Trough West flat but weak ridge Midwest to East Coast.

      1. ..NY/NEW ENGLAND…
WATER VAPOR LOOPS SHOW A MID LEVEL VORTICITY MAX ROTATING NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS NY INTO WESTERN NEW ENGLAND.

  5. Lackey to St. Louis. We get Joe Kelly and outfielder Allen Craig. I don’t have a problem with this one. BUT I do have a problem with the SOX NOT signing Lester.
Perhaps they know something that we don’t. OR since their purchase of
Liverpool Football Club and Roush Fenway Racing., they have gone soft and CHEAP????

    1. Now I’m rooting for Oakland vs St. Louis World Series.

It will be like rooting for familiar faces, even though the Sox aren’t in it.

      1. I do like that lineup better than this year, but who’s going to pitch?

Clay Buchholz is DONE and I MEAN DONE! He’s Fried. He’ll NEVER be the same pitcher.

        OH, AND……

Red Sox trade Stephen Drew to Yankees | Miller to Orioles |

The Orioles acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Miller from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for one of their top pitching prospects in left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on Thursday.

The Red Sox have traded shortstop Stephen Drew to the Yankees in exchange for Kelly Johnson

  6. The young pitchers now have a chance to show what they can do. This team will be better next year than this year.

  7. Good evening!! Another beautiful day 76 degrees Thank tk πŸ™‚

We are Gonna be at the Ty Law PHOF introduction tommorrow after Patriots mini camp, there expecting 1,000’s at the NRG Plaza for the introduction. Hope everyone enjoys the night πŸ™‚

      1. It’s a energy company and it’s a plaza area, it’s about a 40-50,000sqft area where thousands of people can gather, it’s nestled in between CBS Scene Patriots hall of fame, and the open end stadium entrance. Can’t wait!!

      2. Rumor has it Kraft is adding 6,700 seats to have a total of 74,000 seat stadium, I smell Super Bowl bid πŸ™‚

  8. From Dan Shaughnessy (I AGREE!!)

The Sox won’t do it anymore. They think the Dodgers, Yankees, Angels, and Tigers are stupid. They will not engage in such stupidity.

Swell. But Sox fans paying the hightest ticket prices in baseball have to ask themselves if they are OK supporting a team that will not compete for the services of its best pitcher.

No more superstars in Boston. No more superstar contracts. It’s all about younger players and club control. Welcome to Kansas City on the Charles.

    1. I don’t Mean I agree with the Red Sox (I don’t). It means I agree
      with Shaughnessy’s opinion.

  9. Just my quick two cents on the Sox. The Red Sox (and in the future other teams) will not be signing pitchers 30 and over to anything more than a 3 or 4 year deal. After the Sabathia, Zito, etc deals they and other teams will be gun shy. They are also loaded with a lot of potentially good young pitchers (Workman, De Larosa, Webster, Henry, etc). Now they still might try to make an off season move sending some of that talent to Miami to try to get Stanton which would really shore up their lineup. Beyond that the Phillies are looking to dump salary. Cole Hamels will reportedly be on the market this fall. He’s Lester’s age, left handed with almost similar stats. He’s signed through 2018 at a whopping 23 mil a year and even though it’s expensive it keeps with the Sox thinking of nothing more than a 3 or 4 year deal.

    1. oh and btw if you can’t tell I like the deals today πŸ˜‰ The days are passed of one team dominating in terms of winning championships is over. Teams will be up and down an up again in a matter of a year or two. Look at the Sox, Giants, and Dodgers. About the only teams that seem to have a consistent streak of winning seasons seems to be Oakland and Atlanta…and they last one a championship when??? πŸ™‚

      1. I have not followed closely. I tend to think of the sox as anything but the team I knew….goes for all of baseball. With only what I know, I agree with your comments Keith.

    2. Look at Cole Hamels stats for inter-leagure play. They are ATROCIOUS.
No comparison. Lester is a FAR superior pitcher. If they pay Hamels
      I’ll be extra BS**T.

re: Trade I disagree. Sox got hosed.
I like ALL of the other deals, just not the Lester deal.
Lester is a horse, he is durable. He gives you 30+ starts a year, 200+ innings.
      What more do you want?????

As they said in ROUNDERS: PAY THE MAN HIS MONEY!!!!

      1. We agree to disagree….Interleague stats are too small of sampling to be used as the basis for a statement like that.

While Lester may be a horse now there is no guarantee that he will 4 or 5 years now from now. Sabathia, Zito, Lackey and others have all broken down in the 4th or 5th year of those contracts. Those are facts you can’t ignore. I’ve been been a lifelong (and sometimes season ticket holder.back in the day) since 1960 when I went to my first game but there is no way I’d give any 30 year old pitcher 150 mil for 7 years.

        1. For 7 years, NO WAY. I wouldn’t either.
But for Jon Lester, I’d give him 5 years in a
heart beat for whatever the market price was.

Now IF he were 35, I wouldn’t give him anything other
than 1 year extensions or possibly a 2 year deal.

I reference Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemons, Roy Halliday and Andy Petit for example. (yes I know, perhaps steroids had something to do with their longevity?)

Believe me I am a realist on this.

So we disagree and that is perfectly fine. πŸ˜€

          1. πŸ™‚

Just to go back on the Hamels thing for a minute. Hamels is making around 23 mil a year and is signed through 2018. You have to figure that Lester is going to be asking for more (if he is better than Hamels) So even 4 or 5 years is going to cost 100-125 mil.

Interesting that there have been a couple of reports of Lester already saying that he would love to return to Boston. There is also nice pic here of John Henry saying goodbye to Lester.

            http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/2014/07/31/jon-lester-john-henry-share-moment-before-lester-departure/Dfytu068B8ytorrkbLbCMO/story.html?p1=Topofpage:Carousel_lead_linklist

            1. Yup, saw that. Also heard that report.

125 mil should be a NO BRAINER for Boston. GIVE HIM THE MONEY!

That would be an amazing feat if
the rented him to Oakland for 2 months and received YOENIS CESPEDES and then got Lester back for next year. TRULY ASTOUNDING if that were to happen. Who needs Lester for this year as it is a total loss. I’ll BOW to Ben Cherington IF this comes to be!!!!!!

              1. I would be happy with Lester, Hamels (his overall numbers are actually somewhat better than Lester’s…but not by much), Scherzer (after 2015). Also let’s not forget about the arms down on the farm. Even if one or two pan out I will be happy. Finally as much as I think Lester is a good pitcher…he’s not Clayton Kershaw, Pedro Martinez (who we let go at age 33 and really only had one good year after that…trying to make my point), Jim Palmer, Don Drysdale, etc etc

  10. I’m on top of New England helping out at the Mt. Washington Observatory. It’s a one week work vacation. Observations: It’s cool in more ways than one at the summit. Hasn’t gotten out of the 40s yet. Very cloudy, and we had several lightning strikes today. They’re generally seeing this pattern continuing the rest of the summer for NE: Cooler than normal, with an occasional warm day. More precip in store than we’ve been having, according to the people here.

  11. Dear Charlie, the idea of a super bowl at Gilette is just as ludacris as the olympics in Boston, not gonna happen. You of all people should understand the limitations of this area. We dont have the infrastructure, roadways, and lodging in place to support that many people.

    1. I hear this from so many people, and many peoples answer back is then let’s improve highways and those things you talked about to be a better area. There’s been talk of widening rt 1 which they need badly yet people fight It hence traffic gets worse yr after yr, and then when more proposals come the people that fought it can say traffic is to thick already and continue to use that against new construction lol, u can’t make this stuff up am, anyways goodnight πŸ™‚

  12. This morning Chris Lambert on Ch. 7 said that a series of cold fronts next week should keep Bertha OTS. I get the impression though that if those fronts don’t come through, then Bertha would most surely come up the coast and nail SNE. Hopefully the fronts don’t get hung up or wash out to our west like they do many times this time of year.

    1. So far, yes, all models keep it OTS.

Also, ALL models keep it UNDER hurricane strength with varying degrees
      of tropical storm strength.

HUGE difference between the GFDL and the HWRF hurricane models regarding strength and how it holds on, so something is going on here.

We’ll watch for sure as one never knows, but all signs right now point to
      NO IMPACT for SNE. πŸ˜€

  13. Good morning 77 degrees, today is the Ty law introduction, lawyer milloy is walking around Patriot Place lol awesome!!! Very exciting and a great vibe through the entire place. Have a good day everyone πŸ™‚

  14. I’m a bit surprised by how high the dewpoints are running today, mid 60s, though I did just run some errands and didnt think it was too bad out. Noticeable, but not oppressive. There is however, a light breeze here off the ocean, perhaps helping.

  15. 12z NAM in my opinion over doing CAPE and Lift for this afternoon. I think any thunderstorm that does develop downpours is going to be the biggest threat. Don”t expect severe weather.
    http://meteocentre.com/models/explorateur.php?lang=en&map=na&run=12&mod=nam&stn=CAPE&comp=1&run2=12&mod2=nam&stn2=CAPE&hh2=006&fixhh=1&hh=003

    Lift

  16. Interesting that the 12Z NAM brings Bertha VERY close to the Coast on the 5th.
Albeit, pretty weak at the time.

    http://www.instantweathermaps.com/NAM-php/showmap-conusncep.php?run=2014080112&var=PCPPRSTMP_2m&hour=084

However, the 500MB chart would strongly suggest a turn OTS would be forthcoming.

    and 300MB chart as well

  17. Keith-Hingham,

I’ll give you one thing, Cole Hamels is better than I thought. I have been influenced
by some of the sport talk show hosts. His current era is 2.55 and Lester’s is at
2.52. The only caveat with that is that Hamels gets some easy, almost automatic outs when opposing pitchers bat. πŸ˜€

SO, it will come down to how much the Sox want to spend.

If it were up to me, I’d still spend the extra money for Lester, but It’s not up to me.

So we shall see what happens.

Although Lester “could” end up back here, I’d says odds are against that happening.

    1. I also see a couple nice cumulus clouds, orange tinted on top, to my NNW horizon. Perhaps out on the SW side of Rt. 128 ?

      1. Tom,

I just came in from lunch and was was going to post something similar to what you just posted. Cumulus looks very threatening here. There are many towers beginning to appear. Pretty dark to the N&W.

        1. Decent coverage from NJ, SE NY State and now into southern New England.

I wasnt expecting it to be this humid today and perhaps thats assisting in the development ??

With the smoke from the Canada fires, some of the clouds to my north are orange-reddish on top. They look quite nice and ready to pop a shower.

          1. When I went out, I couldn’t believe the humidity!!!

Really beginning to pop now, almost everywhere/anywhere. πŸ˜€

          2. it’s really amusing that ALL of these storms
are popping where the SPC had ZERO storms,
not even a see text risk. πŸ˜€

            1. Indeed !!

I didnt get any thunder/wind with this shower in Marshfield, but I wonder if any of these other cells are producing either ?

  18. Just observed the sky again.

Very impressive cumulus cloud, complete guess …. perhaps towards the Blue Hill area ?? that looks like a shower is ready to develop from.

Just got the heaviest rain, I’m guessing that was about .05 here, which is good, because it hasnt really rained much at all on the South Shore. We’ll take every drop !!

        1. The one up by the MA/NH border, sure looks POTENT!!

But there is NO t-storm risk today. πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

In fairness, our NWS office has/had something:

          .SYNOPSIS…
A FEW SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MAY OCCUR THIS AFTERNOON…BUT
COVERAGE EXPECTED TO BE WIDELY SCATTERED AND DURATION BRIEF

    1. Yes, it looks rather impressive on radar !

This cell in eastern Mass, not intense …

But rather interesting, its been around this part for an hour, because its been continually redeveloping on its SW side.

About 3-4 large dark cumulus clouds have continually reformed.

Finally, the last in the series is moving by. Its clear behind it.

We havent gotten rain from all the clouds, but, if someone has just south of me, they may have gotten a very localized decent amount of rain.

      1. I was noticing that and was going to comment. Strange.
I wonder if that has to do with the sea breeze feeding into
        it?

        1. Probably so.

Also, like the radar shows, once the cumulus clouds hit the ocean a few miles further east, poof !!

Looking east right now and there’s no sign of them.

  19. From local NWS office:

    .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/…
130 PM UPDATE…SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED TSTMS HAVE
DEVELOPED ACROSS THE INTERIOR MORE OR LESS ALONG THE PATTERN
ADVERTIZED BY THE HRRR. SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY AND WEAK SHORT WAVE TROF SEEN IN WATER VAPOR IMAGERY HELPING TO SET OFF THE SCATTERED CONVECTION. WIND SHEAR IS RELATIVELY LOW AND SO NOT TOO LIKELY TO SEE SEVERE…ALTHOUGH WILL NEED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE RISK OF A HIGHLY LOCALIZED PULSE STORM. AREA OF GREATEST INSTABILITY THIS AFTERNOON ANTICIPATED TO BE BOUNDED BY AREA ALONG AND TO RIGHT OF LWM-BED-IJD-HFD-BAF-ORE-AFN-MHT LINE. BRIEF HEAVY DOWNPOURS POSSIBLE WITH SOME STORMS. WITNESSED DUAL POL RAFL RATE UP TO 1.5 INCHES/HOUR WITH STORM THAT PASSED ACROSS HOLYOKE.

  20. Just got in from mowing my back yard from hell….bizzare weeds..tall grass…and a slope at times of almost 30 degrees…look like Jurassic Park….dripping sweat…would have used the pool but I just put shock in it…dumb!!!! Really sticky out there.

  21. Storm just West of Boston looks nice. I can see that one from my office window
while I sit here on hold. πŸ˜€

    Looks pretty juicy. πŸ˜€

  22. According to AccuWeather.com by mid-August it is going to get hot around here with the jet stream moving north into Canada and the Bermuda High strengthening considerably…UGH! πŸ™

I might have known it was too good to be true to totally avoid HHH temps this summer. We had those temps in the summer of 2009 at times as well.

    1. Well, I can only hope that InAccuWeather is dead WRONG!!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

One good thing if it gets hot, we will have lost much daylight, so perhaps
at least nigh time temperatures would be less than if later June/Early July.

    1. Yes it is but the wind here made me quite nervous. It was literally whipping the tree limbs in all directions.

  23. Really bad. Wind was worrisome. It literally blew rain horizontal ON THE INSIDE of the porch. I have never seen that. Settling down now but something hit very close to here

    1. I figured you might be next in line.
The radar exploded from Marlboro to Framingham awfully fast!!!

        1. It seems to be slippin just North and West of my area.
I can see it though. Looks nasty as well.

  24. Thunder in Woburn…and got some spotty rain that stopped as soon as it started…who knows what will happen.

  25. And yet again tstorm warning went up after I had shut down and after the huge cracks of thunder. Flash flood warning here also. My guess is rt 9 is flooded or getting there

    1. I don’t want to alarm you or anyone else, but right now that very storm
is showing signs of some very weak rotation. Nothing worrisome, but
interesting that it’s there. Will watch until 5 when I have to head out.

    1. Awfully hard for me to tell. Looks like right along the Pike just East of rt. 126
Perhaps Wayland and Natick. Near rt. 27

        1. Any rotation “Appears” to be growing weaker.

But that storm was a dousey.

When they get that bad, they need to be watched just in case.

But all looks much better right now. πŸ˜€

      1. Any possible rotation appears to be remaining pretty weak.
Many times there is weak rotation, but there usually isn’t
anything to worry about until it gets stronger like in Revere.
With the Revere one, it was almost a certainty the rotation
        was so strong.

With this storm it is NOT strong, but appears to be there, unless
        I am misreading this thing.

        1. OS the trees were literally sideways and branches were going back and forth. It slowed but is dark to our southwest

          1. Looks like it’s back building. There’s another cell
just to your West, about to move in on you.

          2. Can you estimate wind speed?

Was it 60 mph? Curious. it’s so tranquil here.

Amazing what a few miles does.

          3. That cell doesn’t appear to be doing much and
it also looks to be moving North of your location,
which I assume is somewhere near the Pike
            and Edgehill Rd.

  26. WOW, Vicki you took the brunt of that one.

You’ve been wishing for one. Looks like you got your wish and then some.

Hope all is well out there.

    Heading out now.

    Enjoy the evening.

    1. It is well here. Hope I everywhere else. Police scanner has tons of folks stranded.

      Rain picking up again. Wow

  27. Whats happening in the Framingham area looks like what happened on the South Shore earlier today. Only, the Framingham rain looks much more intense than the South Shore.

I think it looks like the western and southwestern edge of the storm keeps redeveloping and most recently, another segment of storms from the west have merged in. All in all, its kept the rain going for a long while in that area.

Also, seacoast of NH getting heavy rain now too.

  28. I think north of here got it worse. Not sure but looked that way and also seems to still be in heavier rain

    1. Rain varied in Wunder reporting stations in this area. South of us was 2.6ish. Two stations closest to me reporting 4.01 and 3.6. I find the latter to be most reliable.

  29. The rain has been sitting over Sudbury for over an hour. It keeps pulsating. Still pouring.

  30. Mighty Impressive stuff. Heading out for dinner very shortly.
Just checking in to see IF I can leave windows open. Probably will close
most just in case the stuff from the South moves in before we get home.

    1. It does look like its going to rain here. Not thunderstorm clouds, good ole fashion rainstorm cloudiness.

  31. Our backyard is flooded – wind is picking up a little.

Any meteorological reason why a storm cell would sit in one place for so long?

  32. I don’t know how to check for rotation, but what is over Sudbury is the tail end of the rain. This all seems so weird – but I wonder if there is more going on. Maybe and hopefully not.

  33. Wow Vicki. Looks like it wants to do something here but that’s about it. Off to the marshfield yaut club.

  34. Probably no one saw my question, so I will ask again, if anyone might know the answer?

Any meteorological reason why a storm cell would sit in one place for so long?

    Thanks!

    1. Rainshine. OS said it was backfilling….maybe wrong term. I took it to Mean it went over us and then backed up over us. It sure sat for a while.

      1. Vicki, it sure did. I must have missed that comment from OS. It just rained and rained – it seemed like it wouldn’t end. I do remember your post – sounds like you had some scary wind. We didn’t have that – weather is certainly interesting, where a few miles away it can be so different. Thank you for your reply and I hope Mac is continuing to do ok.

        1. I can’t find the comment by OS. I don’t think I made if up. Mac is doing well. He gets stronger every day and makes me so proud. I found out today I may need surgery for diverticuli but am hoping a bland diet and antibiotics will be all I need. When it rains, it does pour and I know you know that very well.

          1. Vicki – how do you do it? With everything you have been going through, you always seem so positive. I wish I could be like that. I get very depressed and sometimes I have a thin skin (too sensitive). I hope you feel better. And yes, it’s been hard for Marc and me. It still is. But that’s life. The only thing I can say is – and it makes me feel better when I see or do this – πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Just some smiles can make anyone feel better – and I think you have said that at some point.
