Few & Far Between

5:32PM original post

2:20AM update

Only 2 “weather systems”, i.e., fronts or lows, will impact the region during the next 7 days. The first is an upper low that will take its sweet time getting through the region (Friday-Sunday). But it’s not bad news. All it is going to do is cause some cloudiness and a few showers at times through early Friday, and grab a surface low and frontal system and swing it through during Sunday with an additional chance of showers.

The next one will likely be a low pressure area passing south of the region toward the middle of next week – but it’s too early for details on this now.

Oh, and again there are no heatwaves in sight. In fact, no 90 degree temps are expected during the next 7 days.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

OVERNIGHT: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers and a risk of a brief thunderstorm. Lows in the 50s. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 58-64. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Highs 73-80. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

  1. Feels more like late Sept early Oct weather, beautiful day IMO but many many customers have said they feel it’s been a crappy summer beach and pool wise as acemaster has stated. I have 272 Fall Aeration Overseedings to perform, we start Aug 25th. Good day!! πŸ™‚

    1. Very typical August weather IMHO. My youngest reminded me her oldest and the neighborhood kids have been in the pool every day until it turned green with the four inches we got two weeks ago tomorrow. And Charlie don’t you start your pool in a heck of a lot colder weather than this

      1. Typical? 70 degree high in mid Aug Vicki, it’s far from typical, it was almost 15 degrees below average

        1. No Charlie. It is very typical. If you remember correctly we summer in August every year (except this one). We ALWAYS range from shorts to sweatshirts. Today is one day and it is not the least big unusual to have a high of 70 in August.

          1. Btw go back in the blog as I have posted here in August and even late July last year and commented on sweatshirt weather. And trust me it has to be quite cool to get me in a sweatshirt. Remember I don’t wear jackets in winter

  2. If we can keep the HHH away from now until the end of September then I will give this summer a 9.5 out of 10…maybe higher! πŸ˜€

  3. I’ve heard people say it’s been a “crappy beach and pool Summer” and I’ve heard others say it’s one of the best Summers they can remember. I guess it’s all in the timing and your location.

    1. Or in your glass being half full ;). And as I say that I have donned a sweatshirt…shorts still…..and am pretending I am at the beach and can see the waves from the deck πŸ™‚

            1. I agree. We had the windows open and there was a great light breeze going through. Plus it seemed to motivate my daughter as she was on a cleaning binge πŸ™‚

  4. Potent package of energy may set off a small cluster of showers/storms that comes up through Long Island and far southeastern New England between 2AM and 7AM.

    1. Oh yay. Someone please wake me up if we get one. They are too few and far between this summer to miss even one

  5. Tale of the tape … Hi temps at Logan since June 1st (# of days)

    60s : 7

    70s : 23

    80s : 39

    90s : 4

The median high temp would have to be in the very low 80s.

    Datawise, a perfectly “average” summer.

I think its been a very pleasant summer.

I do wish we could get a hemispheric pattern change though, as the one we’ve had in place has been going for a while now.

  6. As I don’t have a pool or able to make to the beach much, I would give this summer a 10. Pretty darn perfect IMO.

  7. Radiating out quickly tonight.

55F at both Taunton and North Smithfield, RI as of 9pm.

    Winds calm in SE Mass.

    1. Will they? OR won’t they?

Hold together to make it into Eastern MA later tonight. Ah that is
the question. Obvi0usly, these storms are not dependent on day time
      heating, so perhaps?

      We shall see. πŸ˜€

      1. According to the 2 lightning detection sites I have, there is
no lightning with that complex heading this way. At least not
at this time. I suppose that could change???

        1. The complex South of NYC seems to be intensifying.
Looking pretty strong. The one to the North doesn’t appear to be weakening, but not intensifying either.

  8. The upper low is a bit tighter than I thought, and therefore the batch of showers is a touch further north. Adjusting for this…

  9. It was nice waking up in the middle of the night to a thunderstorm. Only problem was all my windows were open! Had to jump out of bed to close them all, except for leaving the bedroom one open a crack, just enough to still hear the rain and thunder. Haven’t had one of those nights in a long time

  10. I just wanted to clarify something i said yesterday about most of this summer not being beach/pool weather. I didn’t mean for it to sound like i haven’t liked the weather this summer so far. It has been one of the best summers I can remember and i understand our temps have been almost exactly average for summer. My personal preference for pool/beach/boating is hot weather, high 80’s into the 90’s. Majority of this summer has not reached those conditions, especially at the beaches. I don’t really mind it that much this summer since I haven’t had time to go to the beach, but if i had beach days planned i think i would be more bummed. Its kinda like when we get a winter when temps are average and we get close to average snowfall. However, with no sustained cold snaps or big blizzards, we all think it wasn’t a typical winter.

    1. I am in total agreement.

If I am planning on the beach or the pool, I want upper 80s to 90s.

For all other activities what we have today is perfect. πŸ˜€

  11. We tend to associate the extremes of each season (especially winter and summer) with being typical for that season

  12. Happy Friday!! Spectacular morning and I have ZERO complaints about how the summer played out. Since my boys are going back to school before Labor Day I would be perfectly happy if we don’t see any 90 degree days. Those schools heat up fast!

  13. Looks like Logan received 0 inches. Looks like we got a bit here in JP as Hadi indicated.

    Nice Call TK!!!

  14. Great call on the showers and storms last night TK, it went right over me in Wrentham around 3:20 or so I think. Rained hard enough to wake me from my slumber, which hardly ever happens πŸ™‚

    Didn’t hear any thunder though.

  15. Thanks for the link Old Salty.
To me this has been one of the best summer’s I could remember. We have not had long spells of heat and humidity unlike last summer especially when we had that week long heat wave in the middle of July. The only people who would be disappointed are people who love the heat and humidity. Some people been saying 2014 the year without summer. I totally disagree with that statement. There have been so many great days with comfortable levels of humidity to get out and do outdoor activities.

    1. What has really been a bonus this summer is the weekends for the most part have been spectacular 8)

  16. Average Logan high on August 15th : 80.4F

Average Logan high on September 15th : 72.9F

My only issue with being around 75F to 76F in mid August, is that …. if mid-September is only a few degrees ABOVE normal, then, in essence, you experience the same weather for several weeks.

I think most would say that there should be some difference in mid August weather vs mid September weather.

Seems to me this happens a lot up here in late winter, early Spring …. where its a bit above normal temps in February and then March, April are a bit below normal, and that creates a 6-8 week period with little temperature change.

  17. Thanks!

That mini overnight event is not the type you can see coming until 24 hours or less away.

It becomes a “shortcast” basically. πŸ˜‰

  18. Interesting from NWS

US National Weather Service Boston MA

A quick top-10 summary of LEAST annual 90Β° days for various locations in Southern New England. Only Boston and Worcester, MA remain within the top-10 for 2014.
Meteorological Summer (JJA), which ends midnight on September 1st, has been for the most part around average with regards to temperature.

    https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/t1.0-9/10291122_666609750100066_167621772652485444_n.jpg

      1. That what is says. Remember, the records at Worcester are
as messaged up as Boston. Worcester records are kept up
at the airport, 1,000 feet above sea level. Down in the actual city of Worcester it is a different story. Not unlike Logan at the
water’s edge and say The Boston Common or the neighborhoods.
I’m guessing that down in the city it was 90 on a a day or 2. πŸ˜€

      2. On July 22nd, 2001 ….. When it hit 103F at Logan, Worcester hit 96F.

On July 19th, 2013 …. When it hit 99F at Logan, Worcester hit 93F.

The 1,000 ft at work. πŸ™‚

But, perhaps it might be fair to see, that in 99% of the cases ( there might be that 1 seabreeze day here or there during an extremely hot airmass) …..

Logan has to hit about 96F to 97F for Worcester to have a shot at 90F.

        1. Yup sounds about right and it’s been that way for as long as I can remember. That 1,000 feet does it’s job for sure.
Under normal conditions there is about a 5.5 F difference
          in that 1,000 feet.

  19. Tom, OS,: Thank you for the temperature data. For some reason, this summer feels cooler than normal. Not by a lot. But, apparently I am mistaken. Or, this summer’s `feel’ is cooler than last year’s and many recent summers, therefore I am inclined to believe it’s cooler than normal. I’ve only had my fan on a few times this summer, and mostly to keep me company while I sleep. I like the whirring sound of a fan.

I do think this summer’s been cool across the country, on average, especially in the mid and upper section.

    1. I definitely think its been the relative warmth of several of the past winters and summers that, as last winter and this summer have returned closer to normal, have made them feel cooler.

  20. Loving this cooler summer. My prediction…pain. We never get it easy. I think the first few weeks in September will be 90’s and brutal. Gut feeling.

      1. Don’t think so. I think early September has a better chance of featuring 60s than 90s. In any case, my favorite time of year is fast approaching: fall and winter.

  21. I think there must be something wrong with me. I absolutely love cool, breezy, cloudy days like this.

    1. Better check that out.

I sure don’t like days like this. Where the BLEEP did the sun go???????????

      1. Remember OS…This is waay better than full sunshine and a big Bermuda high offshore pumping up 90++ temps. πŸ˜‰

        1. True, but it’s all relative. IF I were down the Cape and wanting to swim all day, I’d prefer the Bermuda High.

Even today it’s a bit too cool. Around 80 would be nice
          for other activities.

I’m a fussy SOB and I’m NEVER happy. Sorry.

    2. If there is something “wrong” with you Vicki, then there must something with me as well. I love these days also, as long as there is a bit of sun peeking from time to time like it has been today. πŸ˜€

      1. You 2 can have them. I’m just saying I personally FEEL much
better when the sun is shining. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      2. Oh good. It’s nice to have company. And OS this day actually reminds me of the occasional day we have at the beach where we are on sweatshirts walking on the beach and loving it

  22. Thanks OS for posting the link regarding the tornado outbreak in 1787. If that occured even 75-100 years later, there would likely have been many fatalities talked about for generations.

    1. I would say 1992 is certainly incorrect. That was a very hot summer IIRC.

I am also not certain about 2010, that might be a bit high.

      1. I believe Boston hit 90+ only 2 times in 1992 – May 23 and August 11.

I think their 2010 numbers are correct.

        1. Tk you were right Judah said check back in November . Just wanted to see if he was unusually early like yourself lol.

  23. Random thought ….

On next year’s snowfall contest, put me down for 95 inches.

I dont think it will snow that much, but I dont care.

    I’m tired of being eliminated by January 1st !! πŸ™‚ πŸ™

  24. So with the summer talk I’ll add my two cents . As you know I love summer and the heat does not bother me as I like it. In regards to this summer coming from a heat lover I think it was great weather wise and fun wise. The pool could be used at anytime here and we had very little rain down here . The biggest rainstorm was on July 5 th. The mix was good and I did not mind it. I however would have liked at least one heat wave and still hoping for one for Labor Day weekend. Tonight I’m out in of course shorts and I did put on my new black dog long sleeve and I don’t feel hot. So to me great summer in the weather dept. enjoy the weekend .

    1. Absolutely agree John. Although my oldest just said it has been a bad and cold summer. I don’t know where I went wrong but can only assume she inherited this problem from her father πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜†

  25. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

How many September heat waves have occurred in Boston since 1872? (If I remember correctly, I think the definition of a heat wave is three 90 degree days in a row.)
    A. 3
    B. 13
    C. 23
    D. 33

    Answer later today.

  26. Today’s 2nd AccuWeather Trivia Quiz

Back to back hurricanes causing record August flooding in 1955 were named …

    A. Connnie & Diane
    B. Diane & Edna
    C. Bob & Carol
    D. Jane & Carol

Answer later today. I actually remembered the names.

  27. I say B.

My family was living in Quincy at the time – near Furnace Brook – and I remember looking out the window and seeing everything flooded. I was about 4 yrs. old (ok – now we all know my age! πŸ™‚ ). So, I woke up my parents and said the ocean was outside! We lived on Alrick Rd. and some people had to be taken out in boats – I don’t remember us being on a boat – so we must have gotten out somehow – can’t seem to remember. But our cellar was flooded.

  28. I have posted a new blog.

I have also reposted the quizzes posted by Longshot as well as rainshine’s reply. πŸ™‚
