Some Small Systems

5:20PM

3 small systems will impact the weather in southeastern New England during the next 7 days, one this evening, one Saturday evening, and one early Tuesday, based on current timing.

The first one is a cold front passing by this evening but with limited shower activity, however still serving to push some muggy air out of the region and replace it with cooler and drier air by Friday into Saturday.

The second system will be a weak double barrel low pressure area passing by Saturday night from southwest to northeast. The first low will move through the eastern Great Lakes and keep most of its moisture north and west of here. The other low will move out south of New England and it currently looks like the greatest chance of wet weather from that will be occurring over RI and southeastern MA. All of this will be offshore by Sunday which will be another cooler, dry day, with this weather lasting through most of Monday as well, though with a bit of a warm-up later Monday.

The third system looks like a weak low pressure area moving through early Tuesday of next week with a shower threat and another shot of cooler and drier air following it.

  1. I need thoughts on two things that are obviously related … Italian restaurants and possibility of rain on Saturday night in the north shore. I am sure you see the immediate connection. 🙂 Actually I have an engagement (that’s a code word for date) on Sat night and I need an Italian restaurant in north shore, but do not want to go out if I am looking at serious rain. I see the southeastern MA possibility, but what about the north shore. This of course could only be considered as a critical decision. 🙂 Please provide advice on both fronts. No pun intended. 🙂

    1. Vicki, thank you so much. I have heard of some of these, but not the Rockport one. That is new! And your rain forecast for Rockport?

      1. This is not the real Vicki. She was afraid to post more in case she used up her allotted posts. She asked me to tell you that some of the others are much wiser with weather. She just likes food 🙂

    1. It’s fake. Been going around the net for a long time.

      * The bolt would not appear in front of the leaves. It would be a singular channel there with no branches and be down the center of the tree, inside the branches of the tree.

      * The pink glow would not take place. It would be bright and very white.

      * The blue fan out of electricity from the base is completely photo-shopped in.

What we are looking at here is a real lightning photo superimposed on the tree, with that ending a few feet above the ground. The rest of what you see was added.

The biggest kicker is there is no glow whatsoever on the ground on the side of the tree the bolt was on. It would be lit up bright white if this were real.

  2. Framingham Fran says:

The humidity is rather high this evening, don’t you think? Seems much higher than earlier today

    1. Dear Framingham Fran,

It does indeed seem more humid, doesn’t it?

      Sincerely,

      Flowergirl, not from Framingham 😛

      1. LOL. Yes it does, Not From Framingham. And don’t tell Vicki but I think she went past her allotted two posts and failed the test miserably.

        1. …and now I’m feeling the cool front moving in – the breeze is cooler, and the air feels like it’s drying out. Wahhoooo!!!!

          1. Probably not bad enough for power loss. Radio communications could be affected. Usually that means some cell phone issues and AM radio can be greatly affected with signals from the southern part of the country and Latin America greatly enhanced up here while signals to the east and west (and north) are way down.

            1. If you go to this page it will show a set of numbers under the current solar flux.

              http://www.wm7d.net/hamradio/solar/index.shtml

When the A index numbers go above 30 and the K number gets above 3 then auroral (radio) conditions usually occur as noted in the previous post. I’ve seen the A index go up over 100 several times and have heard AM stations from Latin America and South America quite clearly at times.

    1. John – there’s a pretty dark green (dark teal, maybe?) on the left and right sides, and a lovely late summer/early fall picture on the top with the old format.

        1. John and Vicki – you’re both right – I have been using 2 laptops, and just looked (finally) at the site with my iPhone, and there is absolutely no background color on the phone. I apologize.

  3. Generally, I like when things stay the same, because change can be unnerving. But at the same time, I think change is exciting, and it is always fun to play around with possibilities. Being best friends with TK for a few years now, and understanding how much he loves consistency, I think it’s really neat that he is experimenting with something that he has kept the same for so long. I know how much this blog means to him, and how much all of you mean to him, so on his behalf I thank all of you for being patient with him as he pokes around the settings. 🙂

  4. Pumpkin Festival in Keene, NH is on October 18th this year. This is such a terrific event. If you like fall you would love this festival. We camp out there almost every year since 2005, except last year. We are bring our 3 and 4 year old children for their first camping trip and I’m not sure how that’s going to go…lol! Usually we camp in tents but this year we rented a pop up tent for the little ones. We will give this a try for a few years until they are old enough. It can get pretty chilly around Keene that time of year.

    1. I may actually go up this year. My friends at Atlas do fireworks there and I’ve heard that the festival is really good anyway.

  5. Its interesting …. of the 4 major climate reporting stations, only Logan is below average for precip YTD.

I dont recall if its Worcester, Providence or Hartford, but one of those locations is 4 inches ABOVE for the year.

I’d guessing the south shore would have some -5 YTD precip contours.

Certainly, there have been some big, flooding rain events in the past during Sept-Oct in New England, however, I think October is one of the climatologically driest times of the year and thats not great, because we definitely need a soaking rain from Boston southward, to the Cape Cod Bridges.

    1. My guess would be Worcester or Hartford being above. Providence area and east toward the Cape, aside from the rains from Arthur, have been very dry. If not for Arthur, the rain deficit would be a much bigger story IMO

    2. I would assume, even with the soakers we received here, we are below. The Sudbury is still a mud flat and getting worse daily.

    1. Nice. Thank you.

Last night Eric was saying that the lights are forecast to be visible
from Latitude 45 Degrees North and higher, with a “slight” chance
as far South as 42 Degrees North. 😀

  6. Good morning, beautiful Fall morning!! Watching the game last night, I couldn’t believe how many ray rice jerseys were there 1,000’s, and after the game the team said it was an emotional win and won for ray rice, lol what? Crazy stuff, granted everyone should get 2nd chances but not now 🙂

  7. re: Blog format

I just figured out why I have such a reaction to the colors.
At work, I have a 24 inch monitor, so the border colors extend about 4 inches on
either side of the blog content. At home, the monitor is like 15 inches or so such that
the border color is only about 1/4 to 1/2 inch on either side of blog content.
    That is a HUGE difference. 😀 😀 😀

    1. OS – absolutely true. I use a 24 inch monitor with my computer and hadn’t thought of that as the reason either. But that being said, I really didn’t have a problem with any color and know I will be happy with whatever TK decides. Packing to me is quite secondary

  8. Tk it all matters on what you like, if it were me I’d change it to be more updated and to the way you want it, we will all still come on and read 🙂

  9. Absolutely beautiful this morning. This is my kind of weather. Looking forward to some flag football and Pop Warner football tomorrow with my boys.

    1. Yup high school football tonight, college football tommorrow and Patriots Sunday at 1pm, hope your son has fun and wins 🙂

      1. My 6-year old is playing flag and this is my 8-year old’s first year in Pop Warner. They lost their first game last week to Brockton and we face Taunton tomorrow. Thankfully at their age they got over losses pretty darn quick.

  10. I didn’t realize the Pats traded out of draft positions that would have gotten them Dez Bryant AND Demarias Thomas. Imagine what Brady could do throwing to those 2 guys on the outside? Is it still in Bill we trust? How has that one worked out so far. Fail fail fail

    1. Many puzzling moves by that guy.

Minnesota WILL run it down the Patriot’s throats, fully exposing the
liability that Wilfork is and the rest of the D line for that matter. This game will be pathetic. The only hope for the game will be that Brady can throw for enough yards/scores to make up for the defensive shortcomings. How’d that work last week????

      1. No, I didn’t see that.
Dark. Dark. Dark. It is not just about low light. It is important to remember the widest part of the Aurora is when the sun is on the opposite side of the earth. So late, nighttime (or early morning) dark tends to be best. But you also want few competing light sources so get away from the city lights and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. The further away from those earth based light sources the better for seeing the Northern Lights. Full moons hurt a bit because they increase ambient light and darkness is best for viewing. The darker the moon, the better

        1. Thanks, OS!! I figure this will be one of few nights that I do not wake up at 3:00 am. I have a great view of the northern sky from the window beside the bed.

  11. Hi all! Busy day, no time to post mobile earlier.

As for the blog style, for now it’ll hold onto this one. I’m looking into a ton of other layouts but I can preview many of them on the side to see if it’s even worth trying live. Because honestly some of them are just pure nonsense. I have seen some that I like. I’m not looking to completely change everything, but I am going to be in need of a layout that will help me to do things I’m going to need going forward, as this blog is a launch pad to something bigger. If I had my way, I’d make it that for the actual blog itself you could choose your own style to view it in. But that’s far beyond my control.

As for the weather, I offer these bullet points about what I think lies ahead…
-A few high clouds tonight leave the sky clear enough for the potential viewing of the Northern Lights. Of course greatest chance is far N & W of Boston, away from lights. There is an outside chance this evolves into a super display that is visible all the way to the Mid Atlantic.
-System comes through Saturday night but 2 pieces of energy never really get together so showers/t-storms go far NW of Boston and a ribbon of rain probably goes across SE MA.
-Sunday, how much clearing? May take a while at first.
-Monday, cool start, warmer finish, nice day.
    -Tuesday, wet start, bright finish.
    -Wednesday, breezy & cool!
-Thursday, another system with clouds & showers?
    -Friday, fair and pleasant.
-Signs of some late Summer warmth as the final days of astronomical Summer are here September 20-22. Heights crash in Greenland again and that’s a warm-up for the Northeast.

    1. Sounds as if fall is trying to make itself heard. I like the warmth creeping back in to remind us summer is still not that far away. I also like cold, windy rainy days.

  12. 54F at Logan for a low, I’m impressed. Only 57F at 8pm and clouds on the way. Not going to get too mild this afternoon if its cloudy.

Wonder if any inland locations dont make 60F for a high temp ……

    1. Everybody will break 60 today. And I believe there will be a little more sun in eastern areas for several hours. before the clouds really take over later.

  13. Updated posted!

There will be reality check for people thinking that just because we got cool and will be a bit cool this week that we’re done with warm patterns. Not the case. 🙂
