The Week Ahead

6:28PM

After a fairly decent weekend other than a period of rain late Saturday, it’s time to look ahead to the coming week.

This week will feature a mini warm up to start, a brief showery episode, a cool interlude, and then a more substantial warm up to end.

High pressure will hang out and give a nice day Monday, less breezy and a little milder than Sunday was. Clouds will roll in Monday night ahead of a fairly fast moving and small low pressure and frontal system from the west, which will bring a chance of showers the first part of Tuesday before it departs, and allows a cooler and dry air mass into the region Tuesday night through Thursday. In fact a second cold front will reinforce the cool air Wednesday night and Thursday. High pressure that slides in from the northwest will park itself over New England then elongate as we head into the end of the week. As upper level high pressure also tries to build over the East Coast a warm up will result. By the end of next weekend there should be low pressure in the Great Lakes which will probably send an increasing southwesterly wind into the region with even more warm air arriving as the final hours of Summer are rolling by.

    Answer toToday’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What is the DOMINANT factor that triggers fall foliage color?
    A. Daylight reduction
    B. Nutrients
    C. Moisture content
    D. Temperature decline

The correct answer is A. Others on the list do contribute, but not as much as A.

  2. The Pats. I did like the extra man on the upfront O-line. It gives the run game a better shot, and in turn can make the passing game tougher to read. What I liked also was the fact that Brady had options on every play and that is exactly what he needs. The D-line looked better. What I did not like is that there are times when the D seemed to leave opponents wide open. Yes, it was a good and somewhat of a necessary win. Things are not totally together, but a BIG step in the right direction.

  3. Thanks TK.

Son said it was 40 at base of Mt Washington last night which surprised me because we were 46. But he said the wind was strong so they used cars as breaks and were quite comfortable.

    1. I’m trying to come up with colors that are not making people go blind… I think the key is muted everything.

      1. Do u have a color picker? If you find a color you like, I can give you the rgb numbers And I think when all is said and done we will all be fine )

      2. The “teal” green you had the other day was best imho.

This yellowish color is better than what was there earlier, but I still don’t care for it all that much. πŸ˜€

        1. My intention was to shift the color with time to represent the season. I like going from peaches and greens in August toward yellows in September, oranges in October, and browns in November.

          1. In all honesty, as long as the blog content is there, color really doesn’t matter, as long as it doesn’t make the reader puke. πŸ˜€

  4. Tom

That hurricane looks really dangerous. Wonder if all the damage will be on the news tomorrow. I hope they make it through okay.

  5. There were a whole bunch of hurricanes that threatened that area in the 1990s. Looks like that pattern is back.

  6. 2 predictions. #1 We don’t see 80 degrees again until next spring/summer #2 We get a sizable snowstorm in early-mid November.

    1. Early-Mid November? With water temperatures way up there?
      Sure you didn’t mean December?

Either way, it would take a special set up. Certainly possible, but likely?
Afraid not. I don’t see it happening.

      We shall see. πŸ˜€

      1. It’s been a while since we’ve had snow in Nov. I remember a few notable Nov. storms when I was a kid. Seems like they don’t happen anymore. I just have a feeling this will be the year for early snows

    2. I thin we DO see 80 degrees again. We shall see.

On another note, it is amazing how fast that ocean temperature drops when the air masses cool off combined with decreasing sun angle.

Current Water Temperature: 61.9 Β°F (16.6 Β°C) and cruising downward.

  7. I liked the black/darker gray background. It was easier to view at work since it looked exactly like when i open Word and display a document in print view πŸ™‚

  8. I like this – looks like last night’s sunset. Actually, I am liking the different colors but know that would drive you nuts to do this on a regular basis.

See how easily amused we are πŸ˜‰

    1. Sorry,

No matter how hard I try, I really dislike most of these colors, except for
the Teal Green. I guess that’s because I am a royal pain in the ass.
      Sorry. πŸ˜€

  9. Tk even if u pick a poo brown color I still will love the blog, post on blog, do what makes u happy, I feel like I’m at a town meeting lol

  10. Odile, has unfortunately, maintained a great deal of its inner core and thus strength as its passed over the southern half of the Baja of California.

I hope everyone was prepared down there for the surge and the fresh water flooding.

    1. Last I saw (and it may have changed) it was going to ride up along the water/penninsula and then head into the area that had such awful flooding last week.

    1. Very Sad. Lightning is a KILLER and should be treated as such.
Unfortunately many do not. AND I must say I have been GUILTY of that
even knowing full well the danger.

I remember one time I was STUPID enough to complete a round of golf with
lightning flashing all over the place. It “appeared” to be cloud to cloud, but
how can anyone count on that? S_T_U_P_I_D!!!! Not anymore!!!!!!

We must treat lightning with respect. Anyone could be struck.

  11. I heard today on news the Boston to Providence corridor peak color looks to be between oct 17-26th, do u concur tk?

    1. Last couple years, our “peak” has been very short lived and muted, especially in southern sections. Any reason that would be different this year?

      1. I feel as if this is a more normal timeframe. But with lack of water wonder if it will not be as pretty. Also so many maples had their leaves destroyed in spring by whatever was eating them

          1. It hasn’t happened yet and I’ll have to go back and check but I think that is much earlier than the last few years. Could be wrong

      1. Absolutely true and to add to that, did you hear
Charles Barclay’s comments. WOW! WOW! and double WOW!!!

        OMG!!!!!

        Here it is:

Turning to the Peterson situation, Rome asked Barkley if it’s OK to hit a child.

“I’m from the South. I understand Boomer’s (Esiason) rage and anger … but he’s a white guy and I’m a black guy. I don’t know where he’s from (editor’s note: Esiason grew up in Long Island), I’m from the South. Whipping — we do that all the time. Every black parent in the South is going to be in jail under those circumstances.”

Rome: “It doesn’t matter where you’re from: Right is right and wrong is wrong.”

Barkley: “I don’t believe that because, listen, we spank kids in the South. I think the question about whether Adrian Peterson went overboard — Listen, Jim, we all grow up in different environments. Every black parent in my neighborhood in the South would be in trouble or in jail under those circumstances.”

        We’re in DEEP TROUBLE!!

        1. Omg. My son in law said several days ago they’d give him a pass for that very reason. I said they couldn’t possibly give him a pass. This is beyond belief

  12. TK – Is it safe to say that we are finally done with HHH temps until next summer? I certainly hope so. There is still Indian Summer ahead at some point.

    1. Heatwaves chance is gone.
90+ risk is nearly gone – very unlikely now.
80+ risk is still there but we’ll need just the right timing.

As for true Indian Summer, by definition we’ll need a frost/freeze first, and then we’ll see. But I suspect our shot at a true Indian Summer will be greater than average this season.

  13. This is no news to me, the south is very very different than here, in all respects, and it’s not even in the south, it’s just south of New England where it’s ok for parents to hit there kids, hek it’s legal for teachers to whack the kids in Missiouri etc etc, I guarantee the jury let’s Peterson away with nothing, I’m not saying it’s right at all, in fact I’m against any abuse, but it’s so widespread and in the culture Barkley is right that they would have every parent in the courts, again it’s normal in all the south, crazy stuff πŸ™‚

    1. Also it’s very normal for you to be walking in a shopping market to see people showing each other there guns, and see them put it back in there holster and continue shopping, it’s very very different πŸ™‚

      1. Showing people guns is one thing. Beating a kid to the point you make him bleed is wrong no matter where you are or how you were brought up.

        One account:

The beating allegedly resulted in numerous injuries to the child, including cuts and bruises to the child’s back, buttocks, ankles, legs and scrotum, along with defensive wounds to the child’s hands. Peterson then texted the boy’s mother, saying that one wound in particular would make her β€œmad at me about his leg. I got kinda good wit the tail end of the switch.”

        http://houston.cbslocal.com/2014/09/12/exclusive-details-on-adrian-peterson-indictment-charges/

    2. Its not a matter of the jury finding him innocent or guilty. What people don’t understand is, he admitted to everything. He turned himself into police. There’s no determining guilt here, its just a matter of punishment now. What i find even more disturbing is there’s no remorse from him. He thinks he did nothing wrong. There’s a big difference between disciplining a child by “spanking” and by beating. The south is way behind on everything and its really bringing this country down.

  14. I am somewhat surprised a person of Adrian Peterson’s age (29) would believe in corporal punishment especially at that severity. If he were a baby boomer or of an earlier generation then I would expect hitting a child as standard parenting. From what I can tell, very few if any of today’s kids get spanked which is probably a good thing given so much stress in today’s society.

  15. The trees may lag last year by 3 to 8 days or so because they got a late start. Not a big departure from “average”.

        1. I went back to last year VERY quickly. On Nov 5 my mimosa which is a warm climate tree was just starting to turn. I still had leaves turning on our maples. Philip said “The leaves have pretty much all turned now here in Boston, but are still on the trees.” I know we have this discussion every year but for every year we are raking far later than ever and the towns have now mostly adjusted to later leaf pickups.

If that turns out to be the peak foliage, it does seem to be more in line with a decade or two ago.

          1. It has been later in general though last year I was about a week earlier than the year before. Of course SOME of that was helped by a strong northerly wind that took a bunch of leaves out of my back yard and then in 2 directions along the main road away from my house. Got lucky. πŸ˜‰

  16. Forecast working out in general. A few more clouds than I expected today. Inversion layer hung around with a big cloud patch this morning southern NH into central and northeastern MA. Similar areas saw some stratocumulus development once the first cloud area dissipated, but now it’s all on the trend downward… just in time for high clouds to arrive from the W toward sunset then thicken up tonight. But that system is flying and will be outta here tomorrow afternoon after producing under 0.25 inch rain.

The cool crispies will be here midweek – Fall feel for sure!

Friday may see some of the biggest diurnals of the year (30s to near 70 from dawn to late afternoon).

Summer feel returns for, appropriately, the last weekend of Summer. πŸ˜›

Transition Monday, mild & showery. Coastal storm may be around by late Tuesday or Wednesday of next week but this is NOT a precursor of the Winter pattern as it would be formed by a pattern unrelated to the one becoming established during Autumn.

  17. NOTE:

I have been watching the GFS become more confused lately about the pattern beyond about 5 days. It’s inconsistent and unreliable beyond that point but OK up until then.

The ECMWF is performing admirably at the moment, but I’m not sure this remains the case for the entire upcoming Autumn. We’ll see about that.

  18. TK – Could 70+ temps continue well into October this year and will cool/chilly temps be more very temporary in nature (a day or two here & there) for most of the upcoming fall?

    1. If the pattern goes the way I think it will, October will have several 70+ days with short cold shots and above normal rainfall.

  19. I’m trying to find out if we’re going to see any showers in the morning, or will it stay to west of us. Any thoughts – thanks πŸ™‚

  20. GFS is getting upgrade in November and will be doubling its horizontal resolution and taking the high resolution out to 10 days from the current 7 1/2 days. NOAA computers are upgrading in January to 700 trillion calculations per second from 200 trillion calculations per second currently. Next month HRRR is coming out. High Resolution Rapid Refresh that runs every hour. Good things finally coming to fruition! Good Weather Geeks episode on TWC yesterday.
