Coaster Ride

4:24PM

Here comes the temperature roller coaster ride. A couple wild swings upcoming as air masses change without any wet weather through the weekend. A cold front swinging through the region late Thursday will not produce any showers. Pleasantly mild air in control now will be replaced by a chilly air mass from Canada by Thursday night and Friday, lasting into early Saturday before a warm-up commences later Saturday and Sunday. This will be prompted by the high settling to the south of the region and a cold front approaching from the west, but still far enough away to not bring any unsettled weather. The unsettled day will likely be Monday as the front swings through, but even then it doesn’t look like all that much wet weather. Fair and pleasant early Fall weather arrives toward the middle of next week. Things may get a bit more interesting after that…but there is a long way to go before we really get into it. For now, we’ll stick to the coming 7 days.

  1. TK – You use the word “interesting” for after the middle of next week. Is there potential for a next weekend washout? I know we need the rain, but… 🙁

    1. The pattern looks dry overall, but there may be an opportunity to pull a tropical system or at least tropical moisture northward up the East Coast at some point end of September or early October. We’re going to ridge for a quite a while with above normal temps.

    1. I’d say that I think we’ll have less than 6 inches of snow in Boston still through December 31, but it’s too early to make that prediction. 😉

    2. It used to be more often than not that we saw snow before thanksgiving….from a couple of inches up. Since this seems more in line with past dates, I’d say you have a good chance

  2. Hi blog buddies! I hope everyone had a GREAT summer.

Glad to be back and I’m making a shameless plug – Please see Eric Fisher’s latest tweet:

    https://twitter.com/ericfisher/status/512396860409905153

That’s my hubby he’s mentioning. (He’s recently become pals with Eric.) If you have second and feel so inclined, please follow Eric’s advice and vote for him! 🙂

Can’t wait to see the leaves start changing and then see some SNOW!!!

    1. I am twitter illiterate. Is there an easier way. I’d be happy to vote. If you can’t ask friends, who can you ask? 🙂

      1. Here for work but still fun. Did Have a chance to go to the beach and experience the cold water from the upwelling. No Gulf Stream here! The palm trees make it easier though!

    1. I had to put mine on this morning for a few mins too cuz of the puppy. I gotta admit, i was a little chilly myself!

  3. Black…..I feel like the blog slipped into a black hole. We’re all being sucked in.
    Ahhhhhh……………………………..

  4. Coaster ride is going to transition to cruising at 38,000 ft in the long term if the EURO and GFS are in the ballpark. They are both showing high heights and warm 850 temps in the long range extended.

  5. I am surprised that I really like the black. It makes the white page pop. Doesn’t distract at all. Enjoying the changes, TK !

    1. I’m looking at it with the large monitor and it is gross. With a normal sized
      monitor, probably just fine. 😀

  6. All these colors you guys talk about is not seen from an iPhone . I see the original format with no changes and I like it.

        1. I just checked Mac’s 5C and daughters 5 and can’t see on those either. If I scroll to the side it looks light grey.

            1. The templates for wordpress show different views (pc, tablet, phone) and they do not show the BG on the phone either. Odd.

  7. re: Colors

I bitch a lot, but honestly I don’t care what colors are here as long as the blog is here. 😀
I’m just giving an honest reaction to the color changes. 😀

    1. Sounds about right, but I wouldn’t completely rule it out in some of the
colder low lying areas South and East of there. For example Norwood Airport.

    2. The more widespread frost yes. There will be pockets of frost in valleys anywhere it is calm long enough to cool sufficiently.

    1. I just fell off my chair laughing. See how what was isn’t what is and won’t be what will be because……………..wait, what did I just say 😉 Funny, how for years it hasn’t bothered anyone !!!

  8. Monthly & Seasonal outlooks have been issued by NOAA.

    Warm October.
Milder than normal November through the Winter.
Precipitation maps are a bit vague but one can discern a drying trend in the long term. Cooler end of Winter into Spring, warm to hot Summer 2015.

I’m in agreement with all of this.

        1. But then again, how many times have we seen a BLOWN
forecast? I honestly don’t take too much stock in long
range forecasts. I admit that science is allowing them to get better and better. We Shall See.

We’ll have to take it one way or the other. 😀

  9. From Eric Fisher commenting on how dry it has been, especially in SNE and how that will affect the fall foliage, “The follow up question many have asked is – ‘Will this impact the foliage season?’ The answer is likely yes. Very dry weather leading up to/during foliage season can help increase and accelerate leaf drop. For far southern New England, we could be in for a lackluster show.”

    1. He does go on to say that areas to the N and W and up into VT, NH, and ME will likely have a good fall foliage season due to more normal rainfall conditions throughout the summer. Ho hum, looks like another crappy foliage season for most of us here in SNE 🙁

      1. We’ll go from green to brief color to brown and leaf drop then a very long season of lack of foliage and brown and grey ground. 😉

            1. I’m still surprised that no one is considering the impact of the Maple leaves that were destroyed in the spring.

              1. Vicki, my backyard maple that was decimated by the green worms has been dropping leaves for about a week now. The leaves are either still shredded or filled in with large black spots. I don’t think this tree will even turn.

                1. Ace you are right. I’d forgotten our crab apple. I don’t know how extensive the maple damage was but it sounds as if it was not just my area

  10. Need advice: grass is about two week old and coming in nicely but in the spots that have been slower to come in I am seeing crab grass. What should I use? Should I pick them? I can’t believe it aready.

    1. Thats really odd unless u got some really bad seed or there was some residual crabgrass root in the soil. I would either pull it out and re-seed those areas or spot treat with round up, it should respond well since the crabgrass is young. Once it dies, re-seed the spot. Either way i would re-seed.

  11. Front must not have made it through yet, its still pretty mild out with mostly cloudy skies and a light breeze. Not good ingredients for a cold night.

  12. Enough of a temperature differential to create some low ocean clouds. They are overhead and points east.

The western half of the sky is crystal clear.

For about an hour last night, when it was in the low 60s at 11pm, the arrival of this colder airmass came with gusty winds. It was kind of neat just to listen to it.

  13. Closer to this large high pressure area ….

    Current 7pm temps …

Messena, NY : 29F (winds calm)

Saranac Lake, NY : 21F (winds calm)

Cold airmass : Mt. Washington is 16F and even though the sun rose about 1 hr ago, Logan’s temp went down another 1F btwn 6 and 7 pm.

  14. I am shocked we are not challenging records today. I can’t remember such a cold air mass for this time in September. Tonight’s even gonna be colder.
