Thursday Forecast Update

4:28PM

SUMMARY…

A cool pool of air aloft associated with upper level low pressure will create daily clouds and a risk of a few rain and even mix/snow showers in a few locations through the weekend. Though most showers will be in the form of rain, the mix/snow would be possible with some of the activity lingering into the nighttime hours and occurring in higher elevations north and west of Boston. By the start of next week, the orientation of upper level low pressure may be such that a surface low can back up and bring a more solid overcast and risk of some wet weather into the region. By the middle of next week, the cool pool should shift further east but with southeastern New England still under its influence.

    1. For me, the thing that doesn’t make it feel Fallish is the visual. The look of the ground. The buds on the trees. I’m just as visual as I am sensitive to the feel of the air, so the combination makes it feel like the Spring chill, dry westerly wind version, instead of the onshore wind damp version. 😀

      1. I actually was going to say fringish but figured everyone would say there goes wacky Vicki again 🙂 And I agree

  1. Thanks TK….we are off to flag football practice and will be sure to add a layer. It gets chilly down in the Manomet section of Plymouth.

  2. Many thanks for the updated forecast. Pretty dismal.
We’ll have to deal with it. Not much else we can do. 😀

  3. TK serious question for you.

My wife and I drove out to Framingham last evening. We couldn’t help but
notice How richly GREEN all of the grass was. Seemed greener than any
    recent Spring I could remember.

IS that a mental thing because this Winter was just so brutal?

    OR

IS it because there was so much snow, which I have heard is the poor man’s
fertilizer. Is it really possible the grass IS greener due to all of the snow we had?
    Myth? or truth?

    Curious and many thanks

Thoughts from others highly welcomed as well.

    1. I’m not an expert but I would guess the long-lasting snowcover protected many grass areas and then the gradual melt gave very adequate water over a long period of time.

    2. OS other than rhe grub damage our grass is really green and we went by your care techniques last year so take it from there. ;). Or It’s something in the framingham water …..

      1. 😀 😀 😀

we went by your care techniques last year so take it from there.

Do you mean leaving it alone? No watering? No Fertilizer? No Nothing? Great Job!!!! Look at the results and think of all the money you could have laid out to obtain the same results. 😆

  4. A very chilly day today, but I have to remember that we are now in April and NOT December. 😉

I do find it interesting though that in recent years there have been Christmases in which little or no winter clothing needed but yet such clothing still feels good for holidays like Easter and Patriot’s Day around here.

  5. snow showers at my house right now. freaking lovely..

Work brings me back to Southern Jersey next week for me. Can’t come soon enough.

  6. Eric says to forget about gardening for awhile yet since nighttime temps will be at or below 32F especially in the suburbs.

  7. TK – Any chance that the Chile volcano eruption affects our climate in the upcoming months ahead?

    1. It may have a minor impact globally with some cooling. I don’t think it will be nearly as significant as Pinatubo was.

  8. Thanks TK !

    Chilly/cold down in Mystic, CT.

Couple of instability showers passing by to the north.

I hope today was the coldest of what is to come.

  9. Heard from my Nephew in Pascoag, RI (NW part of state) that it was SNOWING!!!
    He’s bullshit!

  10. You know, I never put my jacket on today.
I’m not sure what that says? Perhaps after the brutal cold of the Winter,
49 or 50 felt toasty to me? I dunno. Perhaps it means I’m a fruitcake?
I’m headed out in a few and will have to put the jacket on. 😀

  11. A batch of precipitation across parts of CT and northwestern RI indeed produced some mix/snow earlier this evening. It is COLD upstairs.

  12. Snowflakes this morning in Newton. The air has a winter smell to it. It is cold out there. Mid 50’s today, Sat & Sun, but I think it will have a tough time getting up there today.

Boston AM snow shy of record .6″ on 4/24/67, likely equals the trace of 1922 & 1928. Best I can tell, 4th April 24 snow in recorded history.

    2. Euro showing MAY DAY shenanigans

This is still 6 days out. A little wobble here or there, and we could have some
May SNOW. Not out of the question. We shall see. 975mb bomb in the Gulf of Maine.
At the very least it’s going to be chilly.

          1. I’m at work about 15 miles south. Those echoes are right over my house. Wonder if any of it is making the ground

  13. Unless it’s really cold upstairs, too warm for snow here, at least at the surface. It’s a cool 42 degrees.

  14. Was just speaking with the insurance company adjuster who is handling the damage from the ice dam coming through the window. She is in TX. I was telling her we had flurries this am. She said they are under a “something” 6 for tornado in her area right now. I told her I’d take flurries thank you!

She also told me that her grandmother was an old Indian woman who taught her at a very young age to have a love for the earth and also for weather. She said she has always chased storms and has fond memories of being ushered into the storm shelter on her grandmother’s farm while her grandmother ran around chasing chickens, etc. Memories like that give me goosebumps.

      1. You’re welcome, OS. I think I still have goosebumps as I keep picturing her as a child with her grandmother. Funny thing is that with all of the insurance adjusters I have worked with (and Liberty is probably one of the worst companies), she is by far the most responsive and accommodating. It seem that her grandmother had a lot more influence than just weather related.

  15. Entirely cold enough above to produce snow showers or mix down to the surface with any intensity whatsoever.

    1. Reliable source reported snow showers on her way to Ashland this am around 9:00 am. Another reliable source reported them in Uxbridge. Not to mention this reliable source in Framingham 😉 The very saddest part of all was that one of those three reliable sources was dancing around the house as if it were the first snow flakes of the season.

  16. Me again, and I’m all about that warm up. Anticipating significant warm up first week in May, 70s +. Not beach weather (thanks to coastal sea breezes) but enough to break out those short sleeves and shorts. Will not be a good week for Allergy sufferers like my self.

  17. Thanks tk 🙂 lots of sun truck says 46 degrees 🙂

If you are performing your 1st mowing of the year, be sure to mow high at 3 in a half inches 🙂

        1. YES, because even if we got a freak end of April or early May snow it wouldn’t be blowable. It would just melt. 😛

          1. Hehehehe. Well will someone please come empty the gas. I know there isn’t anyone here who will get it done ….thank you ahead of time. Burgers and cocktails on the deck are waiting

          1. Me too. Scotts lawncare just stopped by. Gave me a price I can’t do on my own. May consider as we have so much on our plates right now it would be one less thing to worry about.

  18. MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH

MORE sunshine than I ever expected today. Too bad the temperature didn’t
    respond.

  19. Yes, the clouds seem to have stacked nicely in the hills/mountains and been a little less abundant on the coastal plain, so that’s a bonus today. I thought it would be more stratocumulus-dominated but hey, no complaints. Certainly a chilly breeze out there!

I’ll be updating soon. I’m taking the pessimistic route a little sooner than some forecasts. I think Sunday goes downhill and it stays that way through Tuesday.

I’m not really sure what happens after we come out of that yet. Mixed signals. And Springtime is probably the lowest confidence time of year for forecasting, so I’ll not be delving into much detail beyond day 5 for a while.

    1. Based on the latest CPC outlook, we should at least get to persistent “normal” temps soon within the next week or so.

  20. TWO QUESTIONs FOR TK AND OTHER PROS.

    1) What is the role / responsibility / job of a climatologist?

    2) What kind of an organization would a climatologists work for?

    Thanks.

    1. The climatologists collects and maintains climate data. Where and what data depends on the specific role of the climatologist. The best example I can give is the MA State Climatologist, for many years the well-known Bob Lautzenheiser who held the position until he was almost 90, then my colleague David Taylor who was also an agricultural forecaster in the private company I worked with. Mr. Taylor passed away a few months ago. The MA State Climatologist role is currently being handled by a few individuals. Since that position has always been a non-paid, whoever held it usually did it in addition to another job. I am not sure how it is handled in other states

  21. I noticed that Logan received a trace of snow today. I assume it happened overnight, too bad I missed it. I would have liked to have seen the last flakes of the winter/spring season. 🙁
