Yeah, Not Quite Perfect, But Better

SUMMARY…
Basically what was said in the last blog applies stillΒ  here in this update. Low pressure east of New England continues to send lobes of moisture, mainly in the form of cloudiness, southwestward and southward into southern New England. This continues through Friday which will be the day with the most extensive cloudiness at least through midday. Some drier air working on from the northeast may break up the clouds later in the day. We’re still looking at improvement during the weekend but there will be some lingering cloudiness around on Saturday due to chilly air aloft, and additional development of clouds on Sunday from a small disturbance coming in from the west. But overall, the weekend will be favorable with a trend toward warmer weather. It still looks like a more widespread southwest flow will warm most areas Monday with the exception of the South Coast where the wind is still off the water even from the southwest. With cool air not that far away in Canada we’ll likely see a boundary sink southward into the region during Tuesday and push a little further south on Wednesday of next week. If all goes well, a warmer push of air returns Thursday as weΒ  make an attempt to get into a pattern that features milder to warmer weather more often than the cool stuff. Time will tell…

  1. TK I think later Tuesday into Wednesday would be focal point for the negating effects of a sinking frontal boundary with Wednesday the most likely day to have high temperatures held back particularly the further north and east you go. I have a more optimistic view for late next week until a potential frontal passage sometime Mother’s Day Weekend.

Maybe I am a bit too optimistic? However, for now I am riding on the happy side…

    1. Let’s pick an example city and list daytime high temps that are possible there if things go as forecast above.

      I choose Portsmouth NH…
      Friday: 54
      Saturday: 59
      Sunday: 63
      Monday: 71
      Tuesday: 64
      Wednesday: 54
      Thursday: 68

  2. Thanks TK. I choose framingham ….is it too late? And is it ok if I say I’m not waiting for improvement. I figure we will get there when we get there. You know….just around the next corner

  3. colts are going to be a beast of an offense…. Patriots are going to be a beast of an offense. Look for 2 and even 3 Tight end sets. with chandler and Gronk with the other guys mixing it up. colts will have 3 large wide recievers. Both teams will have average defenses. streangths being line backers. Honestly in my mind i think the patriots should have gone corner and got a 6 footer but thats just me. Look for butler to be the number one or two corner. Look for Grey to have a good year as Blount messed up.

  4. WBZ forecasted temps:

    Friday 52
    Saturday 67
    Sunday 72
    Monday 78
    Tuesday 72
    Wednesday 74
    Thursday 75

  5. Pollen count will be over 9.5 through Sunday. Maple, juniper and elm are the culprits.

  6. Should I be concerned that my lawn is not completely green? I still see some of the dead winter grass between the new green grass. Too early to be worried?

Also should I start watering my lawn?

    1. I’m no expert but I think watering as long as it’s not over-watering would be fine. I’m quite a bit north of you but I still see a lot of dead patches around here in many lawns. I wouldn’t worry yet but I would get a much better 2nd opinion.

      Lawn care people?

  7. Can I do 2 cities for compare and contrast?

Lawrence MA and Chicopee, MA (Springfield) which is 95 miles SW of Lawrence.

    Lawrence Chicopee
    Friday 55 58
    Saturday 65 70
    Sunday 71 73
    Monday 78 83
    Tuesday 73 77
    Wednesday 66 74
    Thursday 71 74

  8. Thank you TK.

I HATE the theme that has been going on around here!!

    cooler coastal areas.

IT SUCKS< SUCKS< SUCKS< SUCKS and did I forget it SUCKS some more!!!!!!

Getting mighty SICK and TIRED of that FACUCKTA EAST WIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Of course some Springs are worse than others and this one is particularly bad.
I remember one years ago and I couldn’t tell you which year, Boston had
an East wind virtually every day from the end of March through sometime
      in May. It was DREADFUL!!!!!

      PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE

      bring us some warmth.

      1. OS, happening here in .Chicago too along the lake. Inland upper 60’s today, low 50’s along the waterfront. Yesterday low 40’s and windy and I didn’t bring a jacket!

      2. Not that its going to help in the near term OS ….. but the water temp at the harbor buoy maxed out at 50.5F yesterday at 4:50pm. (I believe the first 50F+ reading this Spring)

So ….. baby steps …… but the Atlantic is moderating slowly and with time, these sea breezes should lose their cold, raw edge.

          1. It will be warmer in Moose Balls, Ontario Canada
            than Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          2. Just think os what your going through, most new englanders been in this pain since Nov, it’s like if you don’t like winter, we got 2 more months of crap for you, it’s a vicious cycle that just wears the average new englanders to its whits and eventually leave ekkkk πŸ™‚

            1. Never Leaving. Only WIMPS leave.
I love Winter. The only problem with
NE weather is that sometimes the Spring
season is a little rough along the coast.

  9. Long shot lightly raking those areas out, lawns r behind schedule about 12 days, but I got to be flexible because half my clients are mowing for a 2nd and for some a 3rd week, and then I gave customers in uxbridge that are just getting the dethatching done, the bottom line is your fescues and blue grasses will green up going through May πŸ™‚

    1. No need to dethatch. Dethatching in the spring invites weeds and crabgrass to invade as we head into summer. The brown patches of grass are likely just dormant. Hit it up with water which is desperately needs and some nitrogen and waaaalaaa….green grass. Perhaps a ph test followed by lime treatments will be helpful as well. I’ve learned to only dethatch in the fall. I’ve paid the price in prior springs.

      1. I will not get into a disagreement here, but dethatching every other year is very beneficial in spring, don’t aggressively dethatch as you can take a lot of good grass away. You sure your not mixing that up with core areation over seeding in spring? That’s not recommended as many try too. Enjoy the day!! πŸ™‚

        1. I just did a light raking to get up any debris and to “wake up” the grass a bit from being all compressed from the snow. Got some thatch up, but not too much. That combined with some pre-emergent crabgrass preventer fertilizer and my lawn surprisingly has bounced back nicely. The cool nights have created some light dew in the mornings and have kept at least the top soil moist.

  10. Its been funny watching the game of cat and mouse between landscapers doing spring cleanups and the town’s DPW. The DPW comes by with street sweepers one day then landscapers blow all the excess salt and sand from properties into the streets and sidewalks the next. Then the DPW comes out again and to clean it up, then the next series of landscapers blow it all back out in the street. Vicious cycle.

  11. You’d think with that chilly water out there Boston would have ended up cooler than normal for April. NOPE. Pretty much right on the 30 year average. Not that bad. There was also a lack of drizzle and fog despite some cloudy periods. Even in this latest grey episode the clouds were not pure marine but associated more with the synoptic low. I’d say Boston got off easy.

  12. Logan = 46 at 11AM!
    Not very promising!!!

It’s May 1st for crying out loud. May 1st!!

    GIMMIE A BREAK!!!!!

  13. ok here is the silly stat for the patriots
2001 first rd pick DT richard seymour
    Superbowlchamps
2003 first rd pick DT Ty warren
    Superbowlchamps
2004 first rd pick DT Vince Wilkford
    Superbowlchamps
2014 first rd pick DT Dominique Easley
    Superbowlchamps
2015 first rd pick DT Malcom Brown??????
do ya see the pattern πŸ˜›

  14. This should be the end of the cool, raw weather…at least for now….The trend we have been waiting before begins tomorrow. There may be a couple of small bumps in the road but for the most part lots of 60s and 70s and more abundant sunshine for the next 7-10 days. As Charlie pointed out, even cool days will still likely result in temps in the 60s as the sun angle continues to improve. Exception: the immediate coastline until ocean temps rise to more seasonable temps.

  15. Pollen Count

I am seeing forecasts for pollen counts over 11 (on the 12 point scale) this weekend. I can’t believe they would be that high.

  16. After looking at 12z info, I’m even more confident that a lot of the temps in the 7-day forecasts are too warm.

      1. It depends on where. I’m not saying we’re not going to warm up. We are. And many areas are going to be 70+ on a few days. But the entire thing is going to be tempered by a boundary and a series of disturbances.

Already, going to add a shower risk to Sunday. Going to keep the clouds advancing again later Monday. Tuesday looks wet, at least in southern areas. Wednesday we are probably going to be NORTH of the front. What happens later next week remains to be seen but I can see the boundary going north of us briefly Thursday then coming back at some point. It may waver back and forth a few times.

  17. Hmmm. I said Boston would make 50. They made 49 and are down 3. They need a temporary wind shift to get them to 50 now. May not happen. πŸ˜›

      1. They may not be done. All it’s going to take is a wind shift by 30 degrees one way or another and up it goes to 50-55 just like that.

  18. Almost resorted to fisticuffs on the PGA today. You don’t see that often.

Let’s see. How do I tie that into weather. Hmmmm….well it isn’t raining in San francisco :). Although daughter said snow on prince Edward island. Over 200 for them.

  19. I bring great shame to my family. My forecasted hi temps were 2 degrees too cool in both Springfield and Lawrence. Here I was thinking I had a warm bias!

  20. Draft party at Gillette, I’d guess 3,000 people here and standing outside watching the BIG TV πŸ™‚

  21. Love what the Skins have done in the draft. Good IQ guys, tough, versatile. The new GM is really doings nice job.

  22. Pollen count will hit 10.0 today and then go over 11 for the next 3 days. Maple, juniper, elm.

  23. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

At what temperature is the temperature the same on both the Celsius and Fahrenheit scale when converting one to the other?

    A. 0
    B. -20
    C. -40
    D. -273

    Answer later today.

      1. If you just give an answer no one knows you know for certain. That way you can play too πŸ˜‰

        1. I’ll tell you in a private message so you know I actually know it and didn’t just say that. πŸ˜€

  24. Good morning all!

Roaming a city-wide yard sale from 9AM to 1PM then it’s home to watch Derby Day races leading up to the big one, which Dortmund and Carpe Diem will make for a thrilling finish. I’m not sure which of those to pick yet…

I will update the blog early this afternoon!

    1. Odds were really wide when I looked last night. I’m going with CD to win, D to place maybe and not sure who to show. May reverse by tonight. First time in decades that we have not been to a derby party either at daughters or at barn where we had horses. Very sad

Oh and I have a fax machine I’m giving away but one item a yard sale does not make. Want it πŸ™‚

        1. Tx. It is a bigger one. Works well. Giving Way cause it takes up more space than I need.

  25. BTW I think the first front comes through early Tuesday and makes that day 8 to 10 cooler than Monday in most areas, and still think a sneaky back-door boundary may slide in at least along the coast or in eastern MA and southeastern NH sometime Wednesday. Watch that nose of high pressure to the north – the big key to it all.

  26. Logan’s up to 61.8F for the average high on May 2nd.

Got down to an impressive low of 39F last night, when a NE wind flow and low cloud cover were present all night.

    1. I can attest to that cloud deck.
It is beautiful here. Was just out in Dedham where it was 60.
It’s 54.5 here and lower at the Airport. Came up over a hill and there it was:
A thick low cloud deck lingering “just” off shore and I mean “just”. EAST
wind here. I hope that crap stays off shore. 😈

    2. How bad does the cloud deck to the East look?
      What’s your temp?

      Obs says 43!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 BRUTAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Hello Everyone,

I have a question for TK, Tom, or Old Salty.

My fiancΓ©e and I are looking to take our honeymoon in Fiji late August. Is this a terrible time for cyclones in the area?

    Thanks
    TJ

    1. Wish I could help. I haven’t a clue. I don’t even know if Fiji is the Sout Pacific or North Pacific. Sorry.

    2. august is very good bc of being in the south pacific. Temps are year round the same. Tropical storms are usually a threat from late October to April.

  28. HOLY CRAP BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Logan is coming it at 44 Degrees!!!!! at Noon.

Now that is some shitty weather for May 2nd)!(@#(&!*(@&#*(!@#*&!@(&*&#*(&!@#

  29. Beautiful day!! Draft party central here at CBS Patriot Place, temp is 60 degrees!!!! Everyone’s on CBS ROOFDECK GO PATRIOTS!! πŸ™‚

  30. 1 PM 46 at the Airport. What a brutal location in The Spring.

Up to 55.6 here. A struggle to move upward, but beats the crap out of the airport
    location.

  31. 56 here but in the sun it’s spectacular. I love this weather. Comfortable here and perfect sleeping weather at night. This is a spring day.

    1. He is right about the threat. Basically their season officially runs November 1-April 30.

  32. 2 PM 57 here, 48 airport, 60 BlueHill and Norwood, 69 Springfield and Orange.
    It’s out there.

      1. Tomorrow should move a bit more Eastward, but still East Wind
along the coast. Perhaps Boston can crack 50 tomorrow, FINALLY!!!!!!! 😈

        1. NWS re: tomorrow
CT VALLEY COULD APPROACH 80F…OR AT LEAST THE UPPER 70S. WARMER ELSEWHERE TOO…EXCEPT COASTLINES WHERE THE LIGHT RETURN FLOW WILL ALLOW FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LATER DAY SEA BREEZES ONCE
          AGAIN.

Will Boston make 60 before falling back????

  33. 57.4 here now.
    At 3 PM obs
    BlueHills 61
    Albany 74
    Keene, NH 70
    Fitchburg 67
    Windsor Locks 72
    Hartford 69
    Norwood 63
    Boston 49

    See anything WRONG there??????????

    1. Nope, nothing wrong there. Just a classic Spring day in New England. πŸ™‚

    1. Being high up, you can see all the trees budding green and yellow, we can see back bay skyline from here, it’s no longer brown πŸ™‚

      1. A lot of that light green leaf emergence color bursting out here the last few days.

      1. Haven’t heard any. He’s on my list cause I like his looks. You know how my logic works. I go by the eye. …horses not mine :). If I could pull myself off deck, I’d go watch. I like the grey too Although greys are not typically my choice. Blacks will have it hands down and then dark bay

  34. 2 carpe diem to win
    10 firing line to place
    18 American pharaoh to show

I have a bit of time to change

  35. I got the Derby on. I am not into horse racing but I do watch triple crown races.
A treat for golf fans after the Derby primetime golf from San Fransisco.

    1. JJ. I am not a racing fan either as the lower races are not good for the horses. At this level it is better but I really feel guilty about supporting it. Mac is thrilled golf follows

  36. This may sound silly for those in Boston and other immediate coastal communities.

    This is a warm pattern.

The US is warm, so is south central and south east Canada.

Large territorial coverage of 75F or better.

Small area of 85F – 90F in the northern plains ……….. where, I believe, if they dont get rain the next 4 to 6 weeks, will be a place where some very hot airmasses are born this summer and then, in pieces, visit New England.

  37. Vicki I love the match play event and last year’s tournament was exciting with Jason Day beating Victor Dubiasson in extra holes. Dubiasson pulled off some miracle shots to keep that going. To me that was the best tournament last year.

    1. Mac enjoys as well. He is more than frustrated …and mac rarely ever gets frustrated….that they keep playing and replaying that confrontation yesterday. He just wants to see the match

  38. Then the Players Championship is next week. Love that par 3 17th island green hole. I hope its a tight tournament for the final round and we see some drama on that hole.

  39. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

At what temperature is the temperature the same on both the Celsius and Fahrenheit scale when converting one to the other?

    A. 0
    B. -20
    C. -40
    D. -273

    The correct answer is C.

      1. more and more states in the central usa are fracking. even though the place that invented the terrible way of fracking has banned it.

  40. I will start out at saying this. In Bill we trust.. He really put the d-line in mind, with the draft.
This is needed since the Bills and buffalo will be a run and pound teams. the colts as well will have an A gap running back which the patriots struggled with last season (a gap runners).
    D-line looks to improve greatly
line backers were good all ready. Mayo being back. collins in. Hightower and the new guy. Its going to be good to sore up the front 7.
Bill is looking at what he had last season. Logan ryan has shown great games… Butler showed him what he could do. Most forget that butler did play at different times of the year and increased roles in the playoffs. There were times when revis went out or browner. Butler filled in. He was not beat all but once last season. He had 34 passes passed to him .. 2 completions against him. 1 amazing interception. One of those completions he made a great play but the ball landed unlucky.
I believe the patriots are also seeing what they will be doing next season on offense. The patriots offense looks potent with two large catching and blocking TEs. with two others that would start on any other team…… 2 set TE’s will be back to attack the other afc east teams weakpoints. down the middle.

    Patriots are just adapting again.
Now to the weather. Looks like an awesome week is ahead. can see 70s and some 80s this week. πŸ™‚

  41. Portsmouth NH temperature update…
    Forecast made on April 30.

Friday: Predicted high 54 / Actual high 52
Saturday: Predicted high 59 / Actual high 56
    Sunday: Predicted high 63
    Monday: Predicted high 71
    Tuesday: Predicted high 64
    Wednesday: Predicted high 54
    Thursday: Predicted high 68

    D. Eroded square

    Answer later today.

  43. Draft is over, overall very happy with the Patriots, saw 3/4th these players play on Saturdays this past fall, only 2 months before the Patriots are back.

Looking like a very nice day, already in the low 50’s πŸ™‚

  44. All we managed the last 2 days in Marshfield was 48F.

Already 57F. I think we can turn the heat off. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
