      1. And Kenmore station was flooded in several feet of water. No train service for a long time as I recall. I think it rained every Saturday in October 1996. I remember because I was coaching a soccer team on Saturdays. The weather between Saturdays was fine, but once the weekend was upon us …

        1. Lovely being outside in that. Ugh. We were trying to exercise a very active pony who we had just moved to a new facility and was jumpy without adding a noreaster to the mix.

    1. I so agree. Are you still on the coast of Maine. One of my favorite New Age music composers is from that area….Tim Janis. I love his music

      1. Yes, still here! Heading home this afternoon in time for Pats and Cubs.
We saw the live simulcast of Othello from the Met yesterday at the old theatre up here. Othello definitely did not make healthy choices.
NW wind 15-20 here 40 degrees and crispy clear. A simply brilliant day. A single sailboat out in the Bay this morning, running just with the jib.
I will have to look up your musician.

  1. If I saw Barry correctly, he had stats for October 1979 and October 1988 for the most recent occurrences of very cold October mornings in Boston.

Snowfall for winter 79-80 and 88-89 at Logan …..

    12.7 inches and 15.2 inches

Hopefully, for accuracy sake, I have this info correct.

    1. That doesn’t even make sense if there is a correlation with a few cold nights in October and little in the way of snowfall. Coincidence imho. Now IF we had
100 such Octobers and virtually all of them had low snow Winters, then I’d say
we have something. 2 Octobers? Not a large enough sample, as interesting
      as it is.

          1. I’m not sure when but on a previous blog (maybe a month or so ago) someone mentioned about early October snows and cold followed by lower snowfalls for the rest of the season.

            1. There appears to be a correlation
with October snow, but I had never
seen one with just the temperature.

I suppose if there is one with snow, sure
could be one with temperature as well.

              Just seems odd to me.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

I see Logan got to 33. I don’t know here. Just got up a bit ago and it was 36.

    Saw “The Martian” last evening.

Not sure it’s for everyone, but for me it was outstanding. A truly awesome film!
Matt Damon should be up for an Oscar with his performance in this movie. Great supporting cast as well. There were a few places where one would question the
science, but other than that near perfection! It was long at 2 hours 21 minutes.
My wife thought they could have shortened it. I disagree. The length was needed to
fully portray the story properly. We were on Mars with him!!

I would think that most bloggers here would enjoy this film as much as I did, but then
    who knows.

GAME DAY. The revenge continues!!!!!! GO PATS!!!!

    1. We were only below freezing for about 1 hour last night/morning between 6-7am. Our low was 31.5 degrees

    2. Saw the movie the day it came out. Amazing visuals and 3 concurrent stories:
      The crew, NASA, and Damon.
      Great movie.

    1. It would have produced SNOW or RAIN depending on surface temperature,
but SLEET? Gimmie a break! Sleet????

    1. As I said earlier as much as I like a snowy winter, I’m still shell shocked from last January/February. I need this winter to a mild and dry one to recover πŸ™‚

      1. I was talking to one of, if not the best professional bartenders around last night, and because of the recent winters, they are now going to be seasonal bartenders, going to Florida during the winter, and coming back during the summers. Even though there are many college kids around, business dies after Christmas around here, and really picks up down in Florida, plus why not? I can’t blame him, if you can do it, go for it!! Lol we are trying to set up vacations every other week from after Christmas to the beginning of March to ease the winter some. πŸ™‚

        1. I mentioned this to my son who spends most of his time in Boston as do his friends. He just stared at me and asked where your friend tends bar.

Charlie I’ll have to go back and see if you answered my question re where in Charleston your family lives. Tx

        2. From the people I know that tend bar and the many more that go, this is not the case in most locations, so I’m thinking that bar is just in a bad location. They should probably move it. πŸ™‚

  3. Thanks TK
I had to scrape frost of my wind shield this morning as well. I saw a mention of the head of the Charles being cancelled 19 years ago. I had tickets to game one of the World Series and that was cancelled as well. The game was played on Sunday night and it was quite chilly.

  5. SLEET vs GRAUPEL vs SNOW vs RAIN last night.

All of them were possible because of the mixing of the air in and around the showers. But the most likely frozen form was GRAUPEL down in this area. More genuine snow occurred in places further north such as Lyndon State as seen in this photo…

  6. I’m surprised that anyone had frost this morning. The dew points were in the teens. Not a hint of it anywhere here. Must have been some local variation in low spots. I don’t doubt at all that some saw it, just a little surprised. πŸ™‚

      1. Perhaps the decoupling of the atmosphere took place sooner right over your area and the temp fell for longer and got closer to the dew point. Something got them closer together for frost to be there.

  7. Re oct cold. Later oct and early nov 1992 was bitter cold. And we know how bad snow was following it (was that a dec 9 snow or just around it?), although not as bad as the next year.

  8. No widespread frost here either, but there was some frost scattered around the wood chips at the dog park this morning

  9. As TK said above, there are snow showers going through the CT valley. Just looked at the doppler radar – I can see some pink and green (mixed precip. and rain showers) heading south. I wonder if we will see any snow around the Boston area before sunset.

  10. Interesting fact: During the fall, trees turn different colors in different parts of the world. For example, trees in the U.S. turn red, orange and yellow while trees in Europe turn only yellow.

Imagine what the first settlers to North America thought when they saw the fall leaves for the first time and saw more than one color. I would think it was absolutely spectacular, especially here in New England. πŸ™‚

  11. Here is the NWS answer to my question about how did we have sleet last night:

US National Weather Service Boston MA David, in this instance, warm-moist air (on average around the mid-50s) traveling up quickly through the atmosphere via an updraft coalesced and froze quickly within the colder atmosphere aloft in the form of ice pellets. Since the updraft was not very strong, gravity overcame the ice pellets that developed and they fell to the ground. It may not have been so much sleet, but more graupel and ice pellets.

The sounding plot from Albany around 8 pm yesterday is certainly not a sleet sounding, but one that shows just how well-mixed the boundary-layer was such that any bit of warmth at the surface would easily mix-up aloft.

In this explanation, they seemed to lean more towards graupel, which is what Tk
    suggested.

  12. After the last few days of relative chill, the Buoy temperatures are currently at:

    54.9 & 56.5 Degrees.

  13. Can’t believe I’m back in here this early but that’s what the snow does.

Impressive snow showers out here in in Holden. It’s even sticking.

      1. I think its white chicken chili tonight. The wife has been having this intense craving for chili this weekend and finally made some. She heard some old wives tale that for every pregnancy craving you don’t give in to, your baby will get a birth mark

          1. She’s doing much better now that she’s into her 2nd trimester. No more morning sickness thank god

            1. Great news. The down side of morning sickness is it is nasty. Up side is it means baby is doing well. Also up side is there is second trimester brings relief πŸ™‚

    1. Didn’t you know it was too early to talk about snow?
We don’t get snow in October! It was obviously feathers from an outdoor pillow fight nearby. πŸ˜›

  14. One thing I did not get right today was the amount of snow showers around. It was a very picturesque afternoon. I drove around the N Shore, Merrimack Valley, and NH Seacoast to get some nice shots.

    1. Tiny snow flakes on 128/95 near 93 and toward Newton mid-afternoon
Great foliage in Mid-coast Maine (just south of Camden) this weekend. Good to excellent foliage all the way south toward Great Boston. Colors declined just below Portland where 95 is further inland and then came back further south in Maine when we were closer to the water.
Such a classic late October day.

    1. Just ordered 5 bar size pizzas from poopsies in Marshfield. 1.5 hr wait but that is normal for them.

            1. Oh I did not know that. Had dinner at the Abington ale house last night. To make you feel better pizza was not that great for an hour and half wait.

  15. Snow in Uxbridge. Snow in Ashland. Diddly in framingham. Booooo

And a killing frost last night in Uxbridge. All of the garden is black as well as potted plants on steps and plants in garden

  16. I just walked around the house yelling …it’s snowing in Uxbridge, it’s snowing in north attleboro, it’s snowing in Ashland, it’s snowing in Holden, it’s snowing on the south shore. And NOTHING HERE. I opened the front door and Mac quietly asked if I planned to yell at the neighbors too :). Poor Mac.

But is see one lonely dark cloud approaching. I do not lose hope ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

    1. They have had some brewthtaking photos on their FB page in the past few days. Well…they are always breathtaking but you know.

  17. The FINAL flakes are exiting via the elbow of Cape Cod. Now to see how quickly the stratocumulus dissipate and how cold it gets.

  18. Hey Charlie? Who’s your friend at Menton? Because I know 99% of those currently working for BL Gruppo and I had not heard this news.

  19. Saw the first flakes earlier here in Plymouth, NH as well. Just a quick snow shower. There were lots of them out and about though, made for some picturesque scenes as TK said. Was watching them roll through the mountains outside my window, must have been at least 3 or 4 distinct ones.

    Go Pats!!

  21. Loki is playing with this game. I need to go out and Walk around the block. I’d be more relaxed with the coyotes and skunks

    1. There’s nothing to worry about. Only the injuries are slightly concerning but they’ll overcome that.

  22. Snow lore from farmers almanac

And for the record we have a bumper year for acorns.

As many days old as is the moon on the first snow, there will be that many snowfalls by crop planting time.

If ant hills are high in July, winter will be snowy.

If the first week in August is unusually warm, the coming winter will be snowy and long.

For every fog in August, there will be a snowfall the following winter.

Squirrels gathering nuts in a flurry will cause snow to gather in a hurry.

As high as the weeds grow, so will the bank of snow.

    A green Christmas = a white Easter.

If the first snowfall lands on unfrozen ground, winter will be mild.

If there is thunder in winter, it will snow seven days later.

See how high the hornet’s nest, ’twill tell how high the snow will rest

The higher muskrats’ holes are on the riverbank, the higher the snow will be.

A halo ’round the moon means ’twill rain or snow soon.

  23. Good Morning!

Freeze Warning up along the MA coast until 9 AM.

Last night’s 31 degrees was the earliest below freezing temperatures were recorded in Boston since 1979.

Many towns in the 20’s still this morning.

Is 70 degrees a possibility this week … maybe!

  24. Good morning, everyone…
Not a blowout at Indy, but we’re still undefeated.
    Tough Jets game this week.

23.9 at 6 am here at the Taunton homestead (Westside)…
26 at the East Taunton airport. The Taunton observation you see is recorded at the East Taunton airport (ASOS), not at the NWS (KBOX) which is in the Industrial Park off of Route 495 on the Norton line.
Taunton is the largest (by area) city in the Commonwealth. The municipal airport is on the Taunton-Lakeville line. A little Silver City geography this morning!

Have a great week, everyone. Enjoy Mexico, Mom!

  25. I don’t know what just happened, but it’s now 21 (6:13 am) at the East Taunton airport with a DP of 18. It’s usually 1-2 degrees colder in the bogs over there than at my home.
