  1. Thanks for the update TK.

Noticed that echoes appear to be picking up on radar. The heaviest snow is
still ahead of us I think. We shall see.

So far, though, NOT impressed one little bit.

Headed out now. Report back later. Enjoy all.

  2. I do not understand why the majority of Boston colleges are opened, even those who are majority commuters.

      1. hi senor_bisquick – love the name. Be safe.

Framingham State cancels only if State of Emergency declared I believe but will check with my son in law on that. It may be the same for all state colleges. Not sure about private. I wonder if they view it more like a business than a school.

        1. Thanks, Vicki! Decided to walk instead of dealing with unpredictable road conditions later.

The Tufts administration absolutely views the institution more as a business than a school. There’s been a rapid change in focus over the last few years from emphasizing undergrad teaching and student life to research and finances. Cost cutting has been aggressive while research facilities sprout like weeds.

  3. Coming down decent…not intense. Would say heavy coating? Have no way of measuring. My street is covered.

  4. Thanks TK. Biggest thing I’m seeing this morning, based off radar and short range models, is a slight last second shift east in the track, compared to some of yesterday’s very far west projections. May shift the highest totals back towards Attleboro or even Taunton. 4-8″ seems like a good call to me, that seems to be the consensus.

  5. Sitting in parking lot of medical office
In W. Roxbury. Snow has picked up.
    Vis under 1/2 mile.

Cleared 1 1/2 inches from car. I swear saw
A small layer of sleet at the bottom??
In any case heavy wet snow. Not cement
But not fluffy either. More water content
Than I thought. Wind picking up as well.
Roads mostly slushy but covered. Not too
    Bad yet.

  6. I’m not surprised by where we are in the event.

I do think the pieces (upper level energy, surface feature, etc) are about to come together, whereas up to now, it has just been the flow backing to return the precip shield into a marginal airmass.

Next few to many hours should crank out impressive snow.

  7. Fwiw, according to Al Roker the heaviest snow for Tuesday will be over SE MA with other locations at light-moderate amounts including Boston N&W. We will certainly see in the coming days.

  8. Waiting for doc. Nurse has taken vitals.
Looking at nexrad radar looks like some
Heavy elements are about to pin wheel
Into the boston area. Snowing like crazy
In boston. Light to moderate only?
Bull cap bull cap bull crap!!!!

  9. Looking at the radar echoes I’d expect to see more intensity than this. Too bad, could have used a break from grad school life at Tufts!

  10. Just not cold enough. If the temps were right, we’d have our winter storm, but the ground is warm, the temps are above freezing across much of the area, and the storm doesn’t have a whole lot of gas in it (not heavy enough to cool things down) or duration (this thing is over by noon).

  11. Starting to see bigger flakes out my window and by far the hardest the snow has come down. I am wondering will I get more snow today than early next week??? Time will tell.

  12. Band intensifying over central and eastern Long Island.

I think the next 5 hours are going to be fun, if you like snow.

    1. Also, a bit of extra convergence …..

Harbor buoy at 030 wind direction, while on land, it’s 360 degrees.

    2. Tom – have not looked at the school list. Did Marshfield cancel? Framingham waited until 6:00 while every other town in the area cancelled at a reasonable time. Our supt. leaves a lot to be desired on many levels.

      1. Yes. All or close to all south shore towns closed around 5:45am this morning.

Our superintendent in his message explained that it was the afternoon conditions that the town DPW was worried about.

  13. Moderate to heavy snow in Coventry, CT. We have 4″ of snow on the ground and mounting up fast. Everything is pasted in white – very pretty.

  14. Mark that confirms what the radar was estimating on WFSB just a short time ago. I have yet to measure the snow but plan on doing it in a little bit.

  15. Mark, JJ: I think you guys are in the jackpot zone. It’s nice to be inland sometimes. Vicki, I’ll include you in that jackpot. Even Alisonrod could be in a jackpot zone. I believe, however, that while we coastal dwellers will get several more inches of pasty snow but it’s going to be harder to accumulate where we are. Right now in Back Bay it is snowing hard and some it has stuck and is sticking, but you can tell it is having a very hard time sticking to roads (which is probably a good thing), and the ratios are very low.

      1. Seems blah right now, but I know better HA. I have some trees where it’s still totally bare under them. Right now it’s coming down very lazily.

        1. I should clarify..funny…looking out my back deck the snow is really lethargic…when I look out my front window it’s coming down faster (but still not crazy).

  16. I just measured 3.5 inches. If the snow continues like this for the rest of the morning I could see half foot of snow if not a little more in some areas.

  17. Joshua, my location here at 750′ elevation in the hills of Tolland County usually helps. Other than a brief rain shower after dinner time last night, it has been all snow here pretty much since it started.

  18. Looks like a very heavy band making its way up Route 140 from New Bedford to Taunton right now.

  19. Mt Washington down from 10F to 6F.

Portland, ME , Portsmouth, NH both have seen their dewpoint fall 1F the last hour.

The whole column is slowly but surely cooling.

  20. Oops…in the last frame, it looks like it’s changed its mind and is heading northeast towards Wareham.

  21. Joshua I’m right down the street from you longwood area I can assure you it’s far from over this is going to come down heavy and not done at 12. Just my opinion this is far from done there will be a wave of energy riding in.

    1. It’s definitely snowing hard, John, and it is accumulating. You’re right. I just haven’t seen much thus far. I do think this thing moves fairly rapidly out of here – judging by the wind direction and storm rotation it would appear to be a bit further east than projected last night and also moving a bit more in a northeasterly direction. I’d say we do get several more hours of snow, but it tapers quickly after that.

  22. Snow got really weird here…went from normal flakes to these super fine flakes..looks like what rain mist would be. Looks less menacing.

    1. Would not be surprised in the eastern part of the state if some spots come in close to ten inches.

  23. Heaviest snow so far.

    Trees becoming pasted.

I’ve got our heat cranked in case the snow accumulates enough to cause power issues.

  24. Winter Storm Warnings now up for all four southern counties in CT. Only my county which is Litchfield and Harford with an advisory. This very well COULD be an over achiever in parts of CT.

        1. Yeah it hasn’t stopped here but really slowed down. Just wondering how it affects (or effects…hate that choice) amounts.

    1. Tk do you think we will get heavy bands into our area? Judging by the radar, it looks like it’s having hard time getting into the northshore area, with now snow being light, it looks like a snowhole around our area in Reading and Woburn

      1. Yeah I see it. I am glad personally…guessing it won’t last. Maybe the Charlie Hole made it’s way up here.

  25. In Sudbury we have 2-1/4 inches of a wet, kind of pasty snow. Our lights actually flickered briefly twice about an hr. ago.

Snow is pretty but concerned there could be some power outages – lots of trees where we live. I don’t mind so much to lose lights in summer but in winter don’t like it.

    1. oh great, well, i guess I will be learning how to drive in snow lol ….. I am actually pretty nervous .

  26. About an inch on the ground in North Reading. Light snow at this point. Really disappointed in the intensity of the snow.

  27. That is an impressive band of snow over your area. I think you will come in with a double digit snowfall amount there.

  28. Matt, take care driving. Good luck. I took several driving lessons (Garber school) in snow in the early 80s and in a manual Chevy cavalier (standard shift – because I wanted to be able to drive outside the U.S. where >90% of cars are manual). My instructor was great. Taught me the tricks of downshifting in the snow to slow the car down without fishtailing or skidding.

  29. This storm is overachieving big time for this area. It would be ironic if this ended up being our biggest storm of the season.

  30. Good morning.
Back to the office. Big difference between my house and here, a mere 3 miles or so.
About 2 1/2 inches at home about an inch or 1 1/2 inches here.

A little lull here with vis back up approaching a mile. Just dropped back to 3/4 mile.

    Interesting little storm here.

While in the doctor’s office for a bit more than 1 hour, it snow more than 1 inch.

    1. I look at that and it does not translate to what is going on outside at the moment. I’d call it a gently falling snow, no wind to speak of, peacefully quiet.

  31. I won’t feel as bad if we miss out on a big storm next week since this one is over achieving where I am. With that said I am still rooting for a big one next week prior to leaving for Florida.

    1. Wow! It’s gonna have to come down really hard between now and the early afternoon to achieve those totals in eastern MA

  32. Really intense echoes line up from Fall RIver through RI and NE Ct to Worcester
heading NE towards the Boston Area. Looks like the heaviest is yet to come.

    Any one hear thunder yet?

  33. Hate to ask again but when is this done in our area? “Done” = able to shovel with no big threat of additional accumulation.

        1. Just going by simulated NAM radar.
It “could” end earlier or later. We’ll have to keep watching it. That was just a general idea.

    1. That’s the big ocean storm that keeps getting closer and closer with each
and every model run. Wouldn’t it be something IF it ended up like this one???

    1. I hope so! It’s been oh so gently falling snow so far here. One heavy band looks like it may miss to the west and another miss to the east but we’ll see in the next hour or so. Eyeballing it out my office window I’d say we’re just under 3.”

  34. From BZ via NWS – latest totals. No idea of time because for some reason, they didn’t list.

    Southbridge 3.7″
    Framingham 3.5″
    Greenfield 3.0″
    Northboro 2.9″
    Douglas 2.5″
    Auburn 2.5″
    Medway 2.3″
    Walpole 2.0″
    Hopkinton 2.0″
    Holliston 2.0″
    Foxboro 2.0″
    Taunton 1.6″
    Worcester 1.0″
    Clinton 1.0″
    Needham 1.0″

    1. My guess it may have been a while ago since it is accurate for Framingham and the person who measures here is never accrurate – she said tongue in cheek.

      1. Hahaha, i have that same gripe with the spotter in Sharon, they always seem to measure in drifts. The #’s for foxboro and walpole were probably taken around 9am, we’re up to about 3″ now.

  35. approaching 4″ in Sherborn, air temp is 35 and tree limbs are starting to sag

would like to see more cold drain down and change the consistency of the snow

    1. Forsithia that line our property are really sagging. I just plugged all devices in (thanks to JJs comment) so they will be fully charged.

  36. Speaking of power loss…got one of these as a gift and it’s surprisingly useful. It’s basically a car battery in a box with a few power outlets, jump start cables, and a tire inflator. You just plug it in to charge it. Great for in the house when you lose power to charge devices, run fans, some people even run TVs on them. Good to have a few, maybe keep one in the car. Battery so no gas, noise.

    http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-PPRH5-Professional-Power-Station/dp/B0051SO7JQ

    1. That’s pretty cool. Price is perfect too. Not that I’d allow one in the house but always good to know. Thanks WW

  37. Vicki I have power. Most of the power outages are in the eastern part of CT. Snowing at a good clip out my window plow went by and it getting covered right back over with now.

    1. Snow still piling on the limbs here as Captain said. Thanks for the reminder to make sure all my devices are plugged in.

        1. Not here – and we all know it doesn’t really count unless it is here….Vicki does not share power loss well at all 🙁

  38. Tom I have a feeling those outages number not only here in CT but up there in Massachusetts will go up due to the heavy nature of the snow. Now over 10,000 without power here in CT according to latest update from Eversource.

  39. I don’t think the nws 8-12 inches is going to verify. The back end is approaching quickly, and we only have few inches of snow on the ground, however I believe mark’s location will verify, seems like eastern CT and long island are the jackpot zone

      1. I mean that the snow will end in few hours, at least the heavy stuff, and i only have 2 to 3 inches of snow on the ground now so i highly doubt it i will get another 7 to 9 inches.. maybe some areas, but not widespread

    1. I agree Mark’s location will easily get to 12 and maybe more. The others in the 8-12 band will struggle to get to 8 but i think they will just make it.

  40. Cindy on Ch. 5 just added an 8″+ zone from 128 west into Worcester County on her snowfall map…but not quite into Boston.

  41. 10″ in Coventry CT and still snowing hard. Tree branches are sagging big time under the weight of the snow.

      1. This is nuts. I expect we are going to be hearing of many more power outages soon. This looks like the Oct 2011 snowstorm with the trees weighted down, minus the leaves.

  42. Walked for 25 minutes in downtown Boston. Beautiful outside. Some of the wettest snow I’ve ever seen in early February. Not a lot in terms of accumulation in downtown Boston. My car had under 2 inches on the roof – I’d say an inch-and-a-half. Perhaps the grassy areas have 2. It is coming down hard now and has stuck on side-roads and sidewalks, and beginning to stick on major roadways. Very slushy, but still.

    1. Wows that’s later than I thought with the 1pm times thrown around the last few days (not on here, other places).

  43. I have to say that my ride into work was one of the worst I ever experienced. I nearly took out a telephone pole.

  44. INTENSE snow band setting up from South of Providence to NE of Boston.
I mean INTENSE. On my Nexrad, yellow 30 DB echoes and some Tan 35 db echoes.
for Snow that is very serious snow indeed!!!

  45. Thanks tk 🙂
Anywheres from 3.7 inches in Dedham to 2.9 in north Attleboro to 2 inches in providence

  46. I can’t keep up with you JP. I just was checking the radar and saw it so I threw it out there. Good storm today! How does next week look?

    1. From TK about an hour ago…

      Woods Hill Weather says:
      February 5, 2016 at 11:14 AM
Snow ending estimate: 3PM Worcester. 5PM Boston. 7PM Cape Cod.

    2. Charlie, where have you been? Still waiting for the sun and clear roads you predicted we would have by noon.

  47. Complete whiteout here. Snowing harder than it has all morning and wind really picking up. Insanity!!

Up to 12″ now with S++

8″ of this has fallen in the last 3.5 hours.

    1. Unfreakin believable! Incredible snows!!!

Just think, a few days ago this was a complete OTS swing and a miss!!!

As you said much earlier this morning, will Monday’s system do the same????
Or at least come closer. It was OTS, now all models, including this morning’s
NAM and GFS have it coming close enough for some precipitation.

  48. Just a few days ago only southeastern parts of CT were going to get grazed. Well that certainly changed. I would not throw in towel next week if you a snow lover. We saw what happened here.

  49. If this were dry snow with significant wind, it would be white out conditions here, but the snow is wet and there is wind, but not strong enough.

  50. Tweet from meteorologist Ed Vallee for early next week.
Next up: Southern New England needs to watch ANOTHER sneaky low for Monday. Could easily bump NW with more snow.

      1. Like you Tom, we bumped the heat. We also have a wood stove and a generator so we should be good. I was going to head to Minot beach but I don’t think the waves will be that big.

        1. Good, I am glad that you have the stove and generator.

Yeah, I don’t think the ocean is whipped up a great deal yet and high tide was just after 8.

  51. I don’t know how much out here in Worcester area but it’s easily over six.

Gotta give some props to Rayno. He started sniffing this out a couple days back

  52. Transitioned to a thick, misty snow.

    Accumulating quick now.

Wind gusts to 20, maybe 25.

Keeping an eye on the trees 🙂

  53. I’ll be limited here for several hours. I’m giving a talk at an assisted living during a snowstorm on National Weatherpersons Day. How ironic. After that it’s back to Woods Hill for cleanup. 🙂

    1. TK, Happy National Weather Person’s Day!
Kudos to you for giving your time at an assisted living facility. They’re going to love your visit!

  54. Going out to clean the car off in a few, will take a measurement but eyeballing it looks like about 4″ in Walpole.

    1. Nothing 🙂 🙂 🙂 , I hope !!!!

Everyone has their snow day today, fun fun fun !!!!!

One more full week of school to get in, then it can snow 100 inches during school vacation week.

  55. 13.1″ in Coventry, CT. Still snowing though it has lightened up some.

When measuring this snow, keep in mind to clear after 3 or 4″ accumulate. Some compaction occurring with the weight of heavy snow. It has compacted to 12″ where I have not been clearing.

    1. YIKES.
It keeps getting closer and closer and with that tweet you shared, I have
a feeling we’ll get into the heavier precip.

  56. Lights are flickering here at work. My son called to let me know a good sized limb fell off one of our trees at home. I just pray we hold onto our power.

    1. Hopefully, it didn’t hit anything on it’s way down! There’s one in my backyard that looks like it’s about to snap.

  57. Hopefully, the main roads are better than mine. Brakes are useless as the cars just slide right down the hill! Everything is going to freeze up good tonight!!!

  58. Intensity has lightened up dramatically here in providence, and just now they cancel, &@&&&&@@@&@@@@ not happy!!!! Blahhhh

  59. I usually go home for lunch. Roads are so bad, I opted to stay here.
Just went out to grab a sandwich. It is NASTY out and that is with a Capital ‘N’!!

Probably “about” only 5 inches here. Did not measure. Bet it is 7 or 8 inches
    at home.

  60. Here in Quincy, 2 blocks from Wollaston Beach, I’ve shovelled twice. First one generous inch of wet slop at around 9 am. Then at about 11-11:30, 2 inches of the kind of snow that makes a good snowball. I was able to get to a nice clean pavement and I’m not feeling too wiped out by it all. I should note that we live on a corner, so there’s 130 feet of sidewalk in addition to a one car driveway and front walk.

Any guesstimates of end time for the snow fall? Knowing this will help me time my next snow shovel outing.

    1. I’ll side with TK on his timelines from above. You were the same person who said yesterday it would be sunny at noon

    1. Logan is the ARMPIT of Massachusetts and an absolutely PATHETIC
location for our weather observations and records. PATHETIC.

That said, I guarantee there are 6-8 inches on the ground at my house
5-6 miles from the armpit. There are a good 5 or 6 inches here at the office.

  61. Mark’s area of CT, northern RI, and Worcester area were the surprises to me. No one had the jackpot over those areas even as of this morning. The heaviest bands set-up shop right over those areas for hours this morning.

  62. 14.3″ in Coventry, CT. Amazing. Snow has finally lightened up and I think we are done accumulating now for the most part.

If this were a lighter snow with higher ratios, we would have been dealing with 2 feet + easy. This storm was loaded with moisture.

  63. Winds have been a non-factor here so far but picking up a bit now at this hour. Measured an average of 5.5″ at noontime in Walpole.

  64. 12z Euro is a swing and a miss for Monday with the low tracking way out to sea. Still grazes eastern NE with some snow Monday night due to the shear enormity of the system.

    1. Still brings the precipitation shield into Eastern NE. Sure only like 2-4 inches
BUT the point is it is still close enough the bring precip. What will future runs
      show?

    2. actually still manages to squeak out 3-6″ across eastern MA Mon and Mon night

Tuesday storm is a complete miss.

It then pops a third weak storm on Wednesday, also a miss to the south

  65. Another heavy band setting up shop in Boston. Coming down harder again.

Also, office will close at 2PM. Sweet!!!!

  66. Thanks Mark and JP. It’s still a wait and see I’m sure we won’t have a good handle on it until Sunday.

  67. Heavy band here in Westwood. 6 inches thus far. Dependent upon what this band does could top off close to 8!

  68. Love Channel 7 maps. They had nothing in Western MA (far western) this morning and now in the 4-5″ zone…lots of western MA people on another blog I am on not happy.

    1. I can only imagine…let me guess…someone in downtown Boston…someone is Worcester…and someone down the Cape bu a sea wall trying hard to show tsunami style waves.

  69. 6.3 inches here in Billerica. There was 2.4 inches at umass boston. about 2 hours ago.

Most weather models show anything next week much weaker than this storm, but also remember 2 days ago this thing was suppose to be a tiny wave of low pressure well out to sea…. Lets see what they say tomorrow

    1. add about 1 inch to that and that is the actual snowfall. so about 7.3. Also turning windy.
On my way home today, the train ride was nice, though i saw some lines down
. When I got just north of Wilmington there was a lot of blowing snow.

  70. More than 3 inches in Boston, and I’m conservative in my assessment.

Also, more than 6 inches in Providence. I have my spies there doing periodic measurement. Closer to 7 inches east side. I realize that is up on a hill, but still.

It’s coming down cats and dogs the last 20 minutes or so outside my downtown Boston office window.

  71. Heavy band has pushed through. Close to 7 inches now. My accumulating snow appears done. Nice little storm.

    1. need to see what happens with this storm today and what happens with the storms this week. Also that event looks like rain.

    2. I know this is odd, but I’m looking forward to the Arctic blast. As much as I like snow, I love cold air even more. To have a layer of snow followed up by cold, bright, sunny days. That is my idea of utopia. I’m glad this winter is not as much of a dud as I declared it to be a few days ago. I should have trusted TK’s judgment.

      1. I’m with you on that. When it snows, I do like the cold to linger around for a while afterwards so the snowcover can maintain for a few days.

  72. Will see about this. Another tweet from meteorologist Ed Vallee
CIPS analogs for early next week highlighting significant snow threat in New England…

    1. There are many pieces of energy that will be moving through the trough in the next week, any of which could result in a “surprise” snow event.

There has also been a pretty strong signal on the models for a decent event in the Feb 16-17 timeframe as well.

      Interesting pattern! (finally)

      1. and to Tom’s point, the Euro blows up the clipper next Fri/Sat into a coastal and delivers 6″+

Shows a loaded system in the plains on Day 10 as well (the Feb 16 threat I mentioned above)

  73. Euro looking interesting for 2/13, of course when we all will be celebrating
    Valentine’s Day!*(2**^#&!^@&#%^&*!@^#&^!&*@#^&*!^@&*#^!&*@^

    1. I’m hoping it becomes less interesting. Got plans to take the wife out for dinner and we don’t get out much without the kids.

  74. Still coming down good here, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Curious to see what I measure when I get home in a bit. 😀

    1. For some reason the NWS reverted to posting one of my earlier snow totals in this latest update? I just reported my final total to them again – 14.3″. Could end up being the jackpot….we’ll see.

  75. Including the 1/2 inch or so for settling I just measured an average of 7 inches here in Hingham. Snow is fluffier now than earlier. I’ve shoveled 4 times now. A lot more work than any of the monsters from last year.

  76. I’m on generator power. I am now happy I installed a sub panel when I changed the service to 200 amps. I simply turned off one breaker, flipped another on another, started the generator and plugged in the cord. Done! Furnaces, gas stove, tankless hot water heater, kitchen lights and receptacles, refrigerator, Wifi, cable TV and main television are all working.

I learned my lesson from that storm is 2012.

  77. Just took a measurement and we are at 8.5″ in Groveland….probably won’t add much more to that total. Let’s try and get a few more before the spring with one big one

    1. Compared to a week ago, snow chances have increased dramatically in recent model runs. Let’s hope we can have a snowy February and March.

Downtown Boston is still only at around 5 inches of heavy stuff, say 5-and-a-half after settling. My guess is JP and Hyde Park have done better. Curious to know what Blue Hill got at the observatory.

    1. Thank you JJ. Just watched it. Interesting.
He sure was right with this one. Could he be correct again?
Who knows. Based on the NAM, perhaps so. 😀

    1. Indeed, I’ve been seeing this outside my window for the last 20 minutes. It’s really too bad this wasn’t an overnight storm. I feel like it would have given us even more impressive totals.

  78. Home and cleaned up outside. Measured 8 inches on the level here in JP.
I mean there is a goodly amount of snow here. I don’t give a crap about Logan.

    1. Nice amount, JP Dave. You may have more after this band is through. So much for my prediction that we’d be done at noon with accumulating snow. I’m done predicting. I’ll just observe from now on.

  79. questions for next week
one. timing and position of northern stream system over the lakes
two.Does the northern stream system over the lakes push the southern stream low pressure that reforms off the southeast coast out to sea, or does it grab it and give it energy to create a good size storm that travels up the coast .
    3. Does the position of the upper level low allow a third system to develop
the upper level low will at least give the area a chance of some light snow i believe next week.

      1. at this point I am not trusting any of the models, but taking from them that there will be areas of low pressures to work with and will get at least something next week. It will get clearer within 48 hours just like this one 😉

  80. Came home to about 8″ of snow in Sharon but the neighbors tree came down and destroyed the fence I put up over the summer. Then I cranked the snowblower to find out the augar wouldn’t turn. Just got back in from shoveling. Huge damper on a decent storm.

      1. Looked it up, I don’t think it’s that, the blades are firm like they should be. Might be the belts.

        1. That’s a tough one…only other common problem I’ve run into is the spark plug gunking up….pulling it out and scrubbing it with a metal wire brush will do the trick…this would be if the machine doesn’t start…if it starts and the shear pins look good, I’m not sure what the problem is

      1. Thanks. Neighbor feels bad so she’s going with insurance so hopefully they can fix the fence or at least get us some money. The breathtaking sunset made it all ok 🙂

    1. So sorry ace. Saw the news on FB. Glad to hear neighbor trying to help. If you don’t have extra shear pins, they are good to pick up. Even if not that this time. Just an old lady’s advice 🙂

  81. Snow ended about when expected. The sunshine ending was spectacular here. We had a brief 10 min power outage but net is still down.

    7.5 inches in Woburn.

    1. I found the snow, though sticky, to be not too heavy. I suspected that might be the case due to the coldness where it formed. It only fell into relatively warm air.

  82. Ya know as I looked at the picture after picture on FB of the sun coming out or just the winter beauty and added in the pictures emailed to me, I thought about how many truly love this stuff. Perhaps they prefer to enjoy it quietly without complaint. I cannot imagine anyone who didn’t truly sit in awe at the beauty of this day and it’s end.

    1. I was too busy breaking my back shoveling…but I did see the sun and it made me stop. It was cool!

  83. We had a tree limb knock our power line from our house. We still have power but it is constantly flickering. National Grid is sending someone out so hopefully it gets fixed soon. No cable or internet….we may not survive!!

    1. I’ll be right there. You know how the general rule is always make guests feel at home. It would be lovely if you just turned all power of!!!

      1. Lol! We wimped out and came to my mom’s. I was getting nervous with the live wire on the ground. We will have a slumber party here and head home tomorrow.

    1. You gave them a range that was too low. I had 7.5 in Woburn. 8 to 10 inches fell in parts of the 495 belt. Worcester had 12.5 inches.

  84. Son in law decided not to use snowblower. But then he shoveled in shorts so that might indicate a problem …..

  85. FWIW, the SREF, which did very well on this event, is very bullish on the big southern stream system early next week bringing significant impact to eastern parts of SNE. Certainly the trend inside 72 hours has been for just about everything to trend well west of original projections. Even so, it will take quite a bit with this one; consensus remains quite far east and I think this one probably stays too far offshore for high impact.

Still, as TK alluded to, there could be several days featuring snow next week. Very hard to tell whether it’ll be more along the lines of many hours of snow with not much accumulation, or if there’s something more concentrated among the setup. I suspect Boston sees at least 6″ of snow in the next 8 days though, and that’s just a starting point for now.

  86. Tragic news from Canton where a 6 year old girl was killed by a tree branch. It hasn’t been confirmed that the branch fell due to heavy snow, but my guess is that this was the case. Branches are hanging low in my neighborhood, in spite of the fact that we only got 6 inches. It’s the heaviest 6 inches one can imagine.

      1. Me, too. My heart breaks for the parents. How can they ever recover from that kind of loss?

I think back to when my daughter was 6. She loved playing in the snow, digging tunnels, making snowmen, just being outdoors like her `Eskimo’ father. I’ve been lucky with the health of my children, and their well-being. I feel terribly for parents who’ve not been so fortunate.

    1. My guess is that the branch was already in a weakened state, and that a combination of heavy snow and wind caused it to fall.

      1. She wanted to build a snowman. This sucks. Trees are down everywhere my neighborhood is blocked off. The ground is just so soft. They had no problem in my yard digging this week

  87. TK has been spot on about how this Winter will play out from a while back. I know he will be humble about it, but the credit is warranted.

  88. No power since around 2:00… Hooked up the generator around 9:00 for fridge and furnace. Large branch dropped out of maple tree and squashed our swing set, tough day!

    1. The GFS is the outlier keeping Monday completely off shore.
ALL others bring it close enough for significant Precip.

FWIW, Eric says that he EXPECTS the Monday system to track MORE
to the West. We shall see.
