Happy Earth Day to all! No big changes today as we have a primary and secondary cold front to come through tonight and early Saturday with some showers and possibly a few thunderstorms later today and some lingering cloudiness and perhaps a shower early Saturday, then high pressure taking over later Saturday through Sunday. TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered to numerous showers. Slight chance of thunderstorms. Lows in the 50s. Wind SW to W 5-15 MPH but gusty at times.
SATURDAY: Variably cloudy but more sun with time. Scattered to isolated showers favoring southeastern MA morning and midday. Highs around 60. Wind W to NW 10-20 MPH and gusty.
SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 50s.
MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 50s north, 60s south.
TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain mainly morning. Lows 35-45. Highs 45-55.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 27-MAY 1)…

  1. Thanks TK. Big air mass change from yesterday with the dew points way up compared to then. We had dew points near 10 and single digit humidity at times yesterday. It’ll feel much more like summer today. There should be some low 80s west and northwest of Boston.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

Sure looks like the threat of thunderstorms today has greatly diminished, at least
    according to the latest SREF.

  3. From NWS in Taunton
***A FEW STRONG THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE NORTHWEST OF A BOSTON TO
PROVIDENCE LINE BETWEEN 2 AND 10 PM THIS EVENING BUT THE MAJORITY OF
    THE TIME WILL BE DRY***

SO TO SUMMARIZE…THE COMBINATION OF INSTABILITY/SHEAR WILL LIMIT
OVERALL SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL…BUT A FEW STRONG-SEVERE STORMS
CAN NOT BE RULED OUT. TWO THINGS WILL HAVE TO WATCH CLOSELY ARE
THE FACT THAT WE MAY END UP WITH 25+ DEGREE TEMP/DEWPOINT
SPREADS…WHICH MAY SUPPORT LOCALIZED STRONG TO EVEN DAMAGING WIND
GUSTS. THE SECOND IS 500 MB TEMPS AROUND -16C…WHICH SOMETIMES
CAN RESULT IN MORE HAIL THAN ACTUAL CAPE VALUES SUPPORT AT FACE
VALUE. AS IS ALWAYS THE CASE…LOCALIZED HEAVY RAIN MAY RESULT IN
BRIEF PONDING OF WATER ON ROADWAYS BUT NOTHING OUT OF THE
    ORDINARY IS EXPECTED

    1. Are our friends at the Taunton NWS at it again? They just seem to over hype
everything. Hey, perhaps they are correct today, I don’t know.

I was looking at the SREF and their thunderstorm chances were way down
      from yesterday.

      1. Everything in their discussion is valid today. They are required to highlight all distinct possibilities.

        1. Doesn’t look that threatening to me.
          What am I missing????
          The HRRR is remarkably unimpressive.
I don’t know, it still seems to me that Taunton
over hypes virtually every situation. Just how I see it.

          1. They didn’t really hit this one that hard in my opinion. The wording is comprehensive but modest.

  4. As WxWatcher commented, sure has the feel and the smell of an early summer day. Birds are chirping away.

69 at the moment with a 48 DP – Wunder station

I have saved the weather station info that Dave and others gave me a while ago. But I can’t seem to find a wireless that also has a rain gauge but does not have an anemometer. Anyone have one such animal?

  5. Taunton does like to go overboard. I have this feeling one of these times they will be right but nobody will listen since people will think its the boy that cried wolf.
The best instability on the 6z American runs and its not that impressive is CAPE 500-750 in western parts of MA and CT.
The sky does have a bit of haze outside my window and the sun is out. Its not uncomfortable out there.

    1. The only safe bet is that Sarah, Joe, AND Bill are all idiots. 🙂

Although Nye was amusing on Dancing With The Stars. 😀

      1. This is probably going to the one of the few times, I totally disagree with you TK… Bill is no idiot

        1. When he earns his degree in meteorology I’ll have more respect for his expertise on such matters. It has zero to do with politics for me. I don’t like either party. 🙂

            1. “The science guy” holds an engineering degree which I highly respect him for. I also respect his knowledge of general science brought about by his intense interest. I further respect his willingness to teach.

None of this, however, makes him an expert on climate. And that is my opinion whether I agree with his views or not.

              1. For the record, I neither complete agree nor completely disagree with Bill’s opinions. 🙂

              2. I sure do appreciate the need for a degree, but I’m not certain you have to be an expert on climate to know that we are continuing to warm each year of this decade. Also, in reference to Matt’s last link, to know that we have polluted every corner of this earth and that alone has to affect our earth and as such our climate, I don’t think you need more than a basic common sense.

On the first link I am with you as far as complete agreement. The second should scare the hell out of all of us.

                1. I remember Bill Nye every weekday afternoon on PBS. It was probably a good 20 years ago, maybe more. 🙂

          1. having a meteorology degree or not does not mean he is not qualified to talk about it and be correct.. I am going into environmental Science, are you going to tell me that I won’t be qualified. Any natural science is being effected by climate change and the process is happening much faster than it should due to human activity, its fact.

            1. No. I would never tell you that because you are studying it. My problem with Bill is the public’s perception of what he is. He is not a climate expert. He has some knowledge, yes. He has an opinion, yes. Agreeing with an opinion does not automatically make it 100% correct. There are many things we were told would happen that have not, and many things that we were told would happen that are. And as you always hear me say, I favor taking the cautious route as well.

I just really wish the politics would get the hell out of things and stay the hell out of things. I’m so tired of D vs R. It’s just getting old. I want them both to go the hell away. NO more parties.

  6. NWS Boston’s discussion is fine today. No hype there. It’s written for meteorologists. I still have a problem with it being so easily accessible.

    1. Watched just a touch as I won’t have time until later. No mankind is not dealing with the issue because it is creating it.

  7. Summer feel today!
Happy Pesach to all celebrating Passover tonight and tomorrow! Have a special time with your family!

    1. I’d like to join Captain in wishing those who celebrate joy and many blessings of Passover today and throughout the year!

  8. I will take a cool and bit of unsettled next week considering what could be happening in parts of Texas and Oklahoma early next week. Looks like a pretty good size severe weather outbreak is possible in those areas with all modes of severe weather in play.

  9. Vicki, thank you for the Passover blessings. Like Easter, it’s a very meaningful holiday. Not that the other holidays are not meaningful, but this one tells a special story about the Jewish people, with lessons that transcend Judaism. Of course, Easter also tells a very special story, with lessons that transcend Christianity.

    1. You are welcome. It is Captain who reminded me.

After I was laid off in 2000 and before I established my business, I nannied in Newton for a Rabbi who had two absolutely amazing children. I truly enjoyed learning a tremendous amount about the Jewish religion.

I think you are correct that lessons from both transcend the religion.

  10. My son in law is working in Boston today and sent some photos of brush fires around 1126 Boylston in what he says is dead thick wetlands. It looks to be at least two in the photos he sent. Not a good place for a brush fire – not that anyplace is.

    1. They must have put that out quickly. There is a fire station right there.
I can’t see it from here. Should be able to if it were still going.

That’s the area along the Fenway with huge reeds growing that get tall and dry out. I carelessly tossed cigarette or match could easily get it started.
Or some creep set it. Who knows.

      Happens every year.

      1. I think it did get put out quickly, JPD. I wonder, since there was more than one, if it had been set.

        1. Wouldn’t surprise me. On the other hand, there are
many lame brained numbskulls that would toss a lit cigarette out of their car window as well.

Either way, it looks spectacular when it is burning, but
luckily it is easily extinguished and causes no damage.

  11. Logan zooms to 78F at 4pm.

We had a 3 hour beach day on the Bayside, where it had to be 70F with an offshore southerly breeze.

Returning just now to 1/4 mile from Nantucket sound on the Cape’s south side, it can’t be more than 55F, if that.

        1. Just reading about it made me smile. So glad the weather has been good for you and your family!

  12. Car thermometer read 72 when I was just out. All the Wunder stations nearby are in high 70s or 80. Feels warmer than 72 but then a higher DP will do that.

As I came up over a hill, there seems to be a haze that had settled in the few valleys below. A touch like those lazy, hazy, crazy days.

  13. I tried to reply to you earlier Vicki but the mobile login part of my blog busted and I had to wait for it to be fixed. 😛

I agree with you about not needing a degree to know what’s going on in the world. My issue with Bill Nye is that some people think he is something he isn’t. He sure knows quite a bit but he can come off as seeming like an expert on a subject he clearly is not. I just want people to know this. The overall message, I get, and understand, and hope to see it get out there. I do have plenty of respect for him, even if I think he’s a nut case. 😛

      1. I don’t want people to think I hate the guy. I don’t. I tend to use the term idiot in a comical sense. 😉

  14. Strong thunderstorm passing just to the north of me through Windsor, CT. Lots of thunder and dark sky off to the north but no rain here at the office.

  15. Cell coming into Oxford just west of me. And I’m not home. Arghhhhhj

But I’m not far so hopefully

  16. Out in the back yard watching the western sky.

Can see very low stratus coming in off the ocean, flying by from south to north.

Looks a bit like what you’d see in mid summer during a tropical airmass.

    1. Thunderstorms in New England….. As I always say living in Texas ruined tracking thunderstorms here. I at one time loved it, before I left and came back. Once you experience there’s its so different. Kinda like when they freak out over 1-2 inches if ice 🙂

      1. Though we may not get severe weather as frequent as Texas around here it can get quite dangerous and deadly. Saw it on a drive out to Monson on Wednesday. They are still rebuilding from it.

      2. They’re winter wimps, but that makes sense. Of course if you live in the panhandle, it’s a different world. Or if you live in the high plains, it’s a very very different world. Texas is like its own little country with just the variation in weather across that oversized irregular patch of dust and vegetation.
