Sunday Forecast

8:27AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 29-JUNE 2)…
The mid summer feel of May 28 is a memory in just about all of the region as a back-door cold front pushed this all out and replaced it with cooler air and low cloudiness. The exception is that the cloudiness has not really gotten to the South Coast of New England and much of southwestern MA and most of CT, where there has been sunshine this morning. These are the locations, especially CT and western MA, that may see pop up showers and thunderstorms this afternoon as the sun will be allowed to work on the still-warm air mass in place there. These showers and storms would die out as they tried to move northeastward later in the day, destroyed by the marine-stabilized air in place over the remainder of the region. My idea for Monday, which is still looking unsettled, is not for a washout but for episodes of wet weather. My best guess is that one area of showers and embedded thunderstorms crosses much of the region in the pre-dawn hours and pulls out around or shortly after dawn, leaving the region with just a few showers and some breaks in the clouds during most of the Memorial Day ceremonies. Again this will depend on location and the timing is very tricky, so it would probably be wise to plan for the worst if you will be outside, the worst being showers and downpours. Another area of rain and possible thunder may be more aimed for CT, RI, and southeastern MA later morning or early afternoon, and if things work out just right, much of the region may be rain-free in the afternoon. We’ll have to watch for the approach of showers and thunderstorms from the west late in the day that originate in NY, but they may never make it beyond western and possibly central MA and CT. High pressure noses in Tuesday and will try to hang on through midweek, though we have to watch some low pressure to the south, one center which will likely be the remains of Bonnie, should it come closer than I currently expect. Though Tuesday will be quite warm, a cooling trend will follow this.
TODAY: Low overcast morning except sunshine in far southern MA including Cape Cod as well as southern RI. Partial sun developing in the overcast areas this afternoon. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms most likely over interior areas of MA by mid to late afternoon dissipating this evening. Highs 60s shoreline, 70s to lower 80s interior with warmest far inland. Wind NE 5-15 MPH near the coast this morning otherwise light and variable.
TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Showers and thunderstorms probable between midnight and dawn. Lows in the 60s. Wind light variable.
MONDAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Variably cloudy. A couple episodes of showers and embedded thunderstorms during the day. Humid. Highs upper 60s Cape Cod to lower 80s some interior areas. Wind variable mainly SE to SW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s except some upper 60s coast.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 3-7)…
A series of fronts and disturbances bring some unsettled weather at times. Temperatures near to below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 8-12)…
A continued active period, though not excessively wet, with a few disturbances and episodes of shower activity possible. Temperatures near to slightly below normal.

  1. Thank you and I think it was ace who said something to the effect…if it is going to be wet, let it be very wet

Would be extra nice if it happened around planned events such as parades. But we need water. I notice everything around me is now lower than it was a month or so ago. I know there are a series of dams so not sure if some of it is controlled. Blackstone would know better than I. However, I’m sure all isn’t controlled.

  2. Up in Attitash area and overcast but a nice day for story land as the kids won’t be too hot.

  3. Solid overcast here. Gentle, cool breeze out of what feels like ENE or NE. Don’t have my directions totally down here. Great morning to sit out and start the day with a hot cup of coffee.

  4. Thank you, TK.

And yes, Vicki, it is a great morning to start the day with a hot cup of coffee.

Let’s all remember those who have fallen in service to our country. To me Memorial Day is a solemn holiday, a weekend to enjoy, clean the cobwebs off the grill, go to the beach, but also be reflective about the true meaning of this important holiday. I’m a pacifist in many ways, yet I have enormous respect for those who’ve sacrificed and are currently in harm’s way in faraway places.

  5. That ocean breeze feels mighty good after yesterday’s record heat. This is why I don’t knock the sea breeze too much even though it can be quite frustrating during the early spring especially. It can sometimes feel that late winter won’t let go.

  6. We are up in Kennebunkport for the weekend not too far from where Coastal is. What a dramatic difference today. Sitting at 55 under cloudy skies this am after spending yesterday at the beach. Quite a stark contrast to back home where Hartford is going to make another run at 90 today for the fifth day in a row. It looks like a nice dry day though so I am not complaining! Going to walk the Marginal Way in Ogunquit in a bit.

    1. Enjoy Mark. Lovely area. Man I work with and his wife have a place there. They are also up there for the weekend…..with an outside wedding for this pm. Hope it works out for you all

  7. Thanks TK
It still very much feeling like summer where I am today. Not feeling the effects of that back door front.

    1. Front ran out of steam, which was expected. You will be in the zone where scattered showers / t-storms will pop up today.

  8. Thank you once again. Blessings on all those who have served or whose loved ones have served in our armed forces.

I wonder if others are seeing leaves eaten by bugs in their gardens. We have roses, peonies, dogwoods and hydrangeas all with leaves full of holes. I think I recall someone predicting this on this blog during the winter.

    1. Ugh. I haven’t noticed leaves here. But we are seeing some gypsy moths. And my daughter has some winter moth damage already on two or her trees that were badly damaged last year by them

  9. Good morning and thank you TK.

Just passed 63 here and has made it all the way to 63.1. Just got in from running
some errands. Pretty chilly out there.

With the passage of the BD, Boston Buoy sits at:

    Water Temperature (WTMP): 56.5 °F

    1. That’s probably pretty close to the true water temperature. It may drop a tad
more during the day. We shall see.

  10. Thanks TK !

Briefly out of the woods of Myles Standish, in Plymouth.

Still plenty of sun in Carver, but I’ve hit low clouds in Plymouth.

Yesterday was great, probably made it to about 85F before falling from the breeze off of Buzzards Bay.

The pollen is crazy. Everything is coated green. I usually don’t like to take down in the rain, but this can be the exception.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend !!

  11. Applied meteorological analysis to the 12z guidance and my forecast remains unchanged.

Rain slug #1 anywhere or all of area pre-dawn to shortly after dawn.
Rain slug #2 mainly southeastern areas later morning and midday.
Rain slug #3 is not really a rain slug but scattered to linear showers/storms that probably never make it into RI and eastern MA.

More than half the day will be rain-free, and the day may be 75% or more rain-free northwest of Boston.

    1. Thank you TK. I suspect this is not a fair question. We have turned off rain sensor on irrigation system because when it rains it is not enough to stop watering. Would you expect we might see an inch or so for the three events?

      1. The possibility is real, but I suspect the vast majority of the region will see less than 1 inch. It’s going to be like making a few streaks of paint on a canvas while blindfolded. The heavier rain will be where the streaks are, and the rest of the canvas…much less.

  12. I have catkins falling from my oak trees and all over my yard including the mulch beds. Does anyone know how long it takes for catkins to decompose? Thanks.

    1. Amazing. Must be the same system that caused the people to be struck
      by lightning in Paris yesterday.

  13. Quincy has cancelled their Memorial Day parade tomorrow due to the weather, and moved everything else inside.

  14. 12z GFS looks ugly out toward the end of the run. Tough over the east, lower heights, 850’s are meh. Hopefully it’s wrong.

  15. What kind of temperatures would be expected at Logan Airport tomorrow? We’re working on getting our sailboat ready to launch, and it’s stored at the Boston Shipyard and Marina, right next to the airport. Imagine the scent of jet fuel and the roar of the engines as the planes take off… plus an amazing view of downtown Boston and the harbor, lately filled with sailboats out enjoying the breeze.

    1. Sounds awesome…..even with the jet fuel. I was not a boat person but Mac grew up sailing so enjoyed it through his stories

  16. Stayed warm here once again and for second straight day couldn’t get a thunderstorm for my area.

    1. That’s a mystery to me.

Our men and women of service did not call off their battles due to rain showers, so I’m not sure why a parade to honor those fallen would be called off. I could understand doing it for imminent severe weather, but not rain showers…

  17. Significant differences in temperature across New England with Boston and coastal Maine the cool spots (I guess you could throw CC and Islands into the mix), Providence around 74F, and parts of the interior easily into the 80s. As mentioned before, I think Boston will continue to be a relatively cool spot over the coming weeks, yesterday being the exception rather than the rule this spring. I am not saying June will be particularly oool, but I don’t think it’ll be consistently warm at the coast, and at times will be below to well below normal in terms of temperature. Inland is a different story.

  18. Amy, we were at the end of Long Wharf showing relatives visiting from Germany the harbor. It was cool and breezy but beautiful and full of folks taking in the sights.

  19. Wishing everyone a special holiday

Thinking of those selfless men and women who have given their all for us and for our country with eternal gratitude. And of their families who also sacrificed so much.

Thank you also to those who currently serve. God bless you all.

    1. Well said Vicki. Thank you.

Near the end of his life, my Dad finally started talking about his World War II
experiences. My Dad landed at Normandy in a secondary wave and ended up battling the Germans all the way to Germany. It was truly Hell on earth. What these men went through was pure horror to the extreme. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Today is truly a day of remembrance and thankfulness. A day for American heroes.

      1. Speaking of Memorial Day, did anyone see the special Memorial Day Service on PBS last night. A beautiful tribute and well done.

And since we were discussing the Beach Boys, they performed in
honor of the Vietnam Vets. Awesome set. They still have it.

  20. Making a quick update post now. My son marches in the memorial day parade and takes part in services in 3 locations in the city this morning, so I’ll be going along the route to see them. Taking mom to the 2nd of the 3 services as that is where my dad (who was a WW II vet) is buried.

Update will be done in a few minutes…

  21. Update done. Heading to the center of the city now. I’ll be checking in via mobile.
