Sunday Forecast

2:44AM

DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 15-19)
High pressure brings fair weather and a seasonable chill today and Monday (MLK Jr Day). Low pressure heads toward New England from the Midwest Tuesday bringing in clouds and eventual wet weather, which will likely linger into if not through Wednesday as the system redevelops nearby. The low exits by Thursday when dry weather returns.
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 13-18 interior valleys, 19-25 elsewhere. Wind light NW.
MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 15-22 except 23-30 coast. Wind light SW.
TUESDAY: Increasing cloudiness. Chance of rain by mid to late afternoon. Highs 38-45. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Rain likely. Lows 35-42. Highs 42-50.
THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows 35-42. Highs 42-50.

DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 20-24)
High pressure ridging near the East Coast will bring generally dry weather and above normal temperatures for much of this period, but by the end of the period, low pressure approaching from the west will bring a chance of wet weather, most likely rain.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 25-29)
There is some uncertainty as to how the pattern will evolve heading into late January. I believe the trend will be for colder and probably drier, but we may have go to through an additional period of unsettled weather during the transition. Will look at this and try to sort out the details.

  1. TK, thank you. I assume you are feeling better. At least I hope so.

I have to be back in Boston tomorrow, but for today the high in Fort Myers will be 81. As for the Pats, they did not play all that well. And they should not just assume they’ll play better next week and instead have a very focused week of practice. I imagine BB will chew them out over this game.

  2. Thanks TK. Glad you ran out of gas where you did. Hope you are feeling better

As far as Pat’s. Any Pat’s fan knows you can’t base next game on this one. Wish I had a dollar for every time someone says they won’t make the playoffs if they keep this up…..not meaning here, just in general.

  3. Three turn overs and offensive line issues were the problem. They’ll clean that up. Sometimes the Pats play to their opponent and it upsets me. I think they also listened to the press coverage all week.

    1. Couldn’t agree more. These are issues they can and will resolve. Nothing wrong with a bit of a wake up call heading into the AFC Championship game. They’ll play way better no matter who they face.

  4. According to Barry, plowable snow is now likely in some areas well N/W of Boston. Just yesterday, it appeared to be rain for all areas including NNE.

  5. Ringling Bros./Barnum & Bailey Circus is shutting down after 146 years due to a huge drop in attendance. I myself haven’t been in ages, but it is still sad IMHO. 🙁

      1. I suppose no one wants to hear my opinion on this????

I think it has played out the course. It’s just outdated entertainment. I took my daughter once to the old Boston Garden around 1980 or so. I HATED IT! Couldn’t wait for the damn thing to be over. Never ever liked the circus.

I never liked how they treated the animals and the performers
        for that matter.

Sometimes change is good. I for one won’t even know it’s gone. 😀

Sorry for the above jaded comment from a Grumpy Old man. 😀
        Actually, I’m not sorry.

  6. Good morning and thank you TK.

    re: Pat’s

Not quite what I expected, but certainly something many of us were worried about.
Still they had enough to win And they covered the spread.

They better get Dion Lewis some STICKEM!!!

Was it just I OR did Brady appear to throw into coverage way too often???
2 picks, but both were deflections. Still, better throws = No picks.

Also, Brady was running for his life 1/2 the night. NOT good. Not good at all.

Hogan is hurt. Very bad news. Hope he can make a recovery by next game.

I think I want Pittsburg and not KC next. We’ll know tonight.

    1. I use wunder on phone and on tablet for current info. And I use here for any forecasts. I cringe when my kids tell me what their app said.

      1. hahahahahahahahaha –

I tried to post a comment I thought you would have said last night but something got lost in the translation. It simply doesn’t have the same umph if it doesn’t come from you!

  7. Get some of that snow down my way EURO is showing.
4:40pm can’t get here soon enough so I could watch my Cowboys take on the Packers. If we win no lay up next week against Atlanta.

        1. You know what, who cares because Brady will be
the MVP of the Super Bowl, which is more important
          imho. 😀

  8. Thanks JPDave. I can’t even think about Atlanta when we got a Packers team that is playing very well coming into our building today.

    1. Wife and I may watch that game, although Victoria starts on PBS tonight
and we may leave the game for an hour to watch that. Looks very interesting.
Most all of the PBS “Master Piece” productions are Awesome.

      We have enjoyed:

      Downton Abbey
      Poldark
      Grantchester
      Indian Summers
      Mr. Selfridge

So far superior to network television, I cannot even describe.

      1. I said yesterday and I will say it today I think that Cowboys Packers game is going to be the best game of the weekend.

  9. Thanks to JPDave I don’t have to spend time today getting misty about Ringling Bros. I started to but then saw his post, chuckled, and decided to move on to more productive things!

Pats scared the heck out of me yesterday. And I still think that Brady should try eating a big rib eye before the AFC game – as he’s now essentially vegan it might turn him into Mighty Mouse – who knows? Lately at post game press conferences he looks alarmingly like Casper the friendly ghost.

Sorry absolutely nothing weather related here but thanks to all who are monitoring tues into wed – your great thoughts, explanations and model links are incredibly appreciated!

    1. 🙂

Laughing out loud at Casper. He is dedicated to his diet. I am equally dedicated to the non diet. Im guessing his is the better choice.

I did age a bit last night and thankfully I was alone so didn’t embarrass myself with the few (maybe more than a few) words that slipped out. I did, however, enjoy having Blackstones company. 🙂

And I am suddenly and oddly hungry for a ribeye

  10. Thanks JPDave and Vicki. With a win Cowboys will be in the NFC Championship for the first time since 1995.

  11. Thanks, TK…

Any early forecast for Foxborough this Sunday night for a 6:40 kickoff?

Looking forward to today’s playoff games!

Thanks for reminding me about Bob James “Touchdown”, TK. Know the album well. I was involved in college radio and used that album as background when I did college football scores on Saturday night.
    Great album!

    Take care, all!

    1. This is a good example of very misleading Euro snow maps. Mine on Weatherbell is the same way. I did see one from Ed Vallee on Twitter that looked reasonable, I wish I knew what method his maps use. But something is screwy on the others ones. The thermal profiles on the 12z run don’t support anything like that so far south and east.

Potential is growing for a significant winter storm inland, but this will be a rain event for most of our area.

  12. Could we get that snow to come just a bit further south. Painful for me as a snow lover seeing the CMC and EURO so close yet so far from accumulating snow.

  13. Just saw that tweet from Ed. Gives my area a small accumulation of snow. The EURO map JPDave posted shows no snow for my area.

  14. Like I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, much of our snow accumulation this winter is likely to occur from a storm that just pops up unexpectedly. I wouldn’t count out accumulating snow in Boston next week.

  15. I think Tuesday night and Wednesday might be a real mess across the interior – snow/freezing rain. Outside 128, temperatures may really struggle to get above freezing, which could lead to big icing issues. I’ll take a deeper dive into things tonight when I write my weekly outlook, but that’s my preliminary take right now.

  16. starting to feel like the more snow you see the better off you will be with lesser ice amounts. Then again, the more snow the better it always is.

    1. No matter what happens now, this is a bit of a surprise to me and other than
the possible ice part, very nice to see. 😀

  17. This is an ice event not a snow event. People get caught up on snow accumulations which the models are going to completely misinterpret and over represent while underplaying the ice. This would be a moderate impact snow event at worst if all snow, but instead I believe there could be an significant impact ice event in elevated areas of the interior and probably a moderate impact ice event at lower elevations.

  18. Oh great. I don’t think anyone is a fan of ice. And it has the attention of SAK and JMA. I’m checking my flashlights and lanterns

  19. Since the update above was written late Saturday night, I did not really entertain the idea of ice/snow in parts of the forecast area. I’m more concerned with ice than snow, and most concerned with central MA and southern NH at this point.

Will revisit this with the 00z guidance and probably have Monday’s update out before I crash tonight.

  20. I am happy to be down one score at halftime considering our defense let the Packers score touchdowns the first three times they had the football

  21. Following the blog discussion today I am becoming more hopeful that there may be snow in NNE mid-week.

  22. Dallas’ secondery is getting torched.
JJ, I haven’t watched much Dallas this season. Did they play better?

  23. The defense has given up a lot of big plays in the game which is something they have not done this year.

  24. Wow, thrust might pull this off.
I kinda hope so. Pats can beat Dallas if it gets to that. Rodgers is dangerous. I’d rather the Pats play Dallas or Atlanta

  25. Time to gaze into the crystal ball with some official and unofficial comments about the weather in the future, and the distant future. Remember to take these with a healthy doze of sodium chloride. 😉

MLK Jr. Day: There is a common misconception that we have a storm every MLK Jr. Weekend. Not the case. There will often be low pressure around at some point during or nearby to that 3-day period, but this is true of any 3-day period in winter, based on climatology. This particular time, other than that weak disturbance going by to the south on Saturday night, it’s been a high pressure dominated weekend and will end off that way on the holiday itself.

Tuesday/Wednesday threat: Cold enough for some Tuesday night and early Wednesday freezing rain and possible sleet central MA and southern NH, basically from the 495 belt north of the Mass Pike westward. Yes there is room to adjust this slightly. I think snow will be confined mostly to the Monadnocks northward, but there may be a touch of accumulating snow at the end of the system Wednesday night if cold air comes back in quickly enough in some of the areas that did not see any on the front end of the storm, including parts of north central MA. Will work out these details on the next blog entry and have a final call on the one after that.

Late week: Clearing out, cool, but not that cold.

Final 10 days of January: Transition time. I’m still not 100% sure detail-wise how this happens but I do see enough to make me think at least 1 decent rain event and 1 decent snow event may occur for much of if not all of the region between January 24 and January 31.

New pattern for February: Leaning toward cold and dry versus cold and snowy for the first half of February but will have to watch for a parade of clippers, because once in a while you get a surprise from one. Not sure if this continues all month. May reverse back a Southeast ridge and storm track through the Great Lakes later in the month.

Spring: The demise of La Nina and the birth of a weak El Nino means the alternating pattern we’ve seen much of the winter hangs on early, then gives up and probably trends toward warmer and dry at first, then eventually warm and wetter later in the season. Will that be the beginning of the end of the drought? I think very possibly yes.

Summer: Do you like thunderstorms? 😉

        1. Ugh. Awful thing. And worst is that one grandchild seems to be getting it back. She started it and now it has gone through everyone and she may have again.

  26. Wow. Now this is a playoff game

Blackstone…son in law said same about Dallas or Atlanta. I’d rather see us play the hardest team. But then I suppose that goes out the window since whomever we play will be the one that beat the others.

  27. Poor Dallas hasn’t been to the AFC championship game in 20 years. Just can’t get over the hump.

  28. There is absolutely no shame in either the season Dallas had or tonight’s game. Well done Dallas. Thanks for the thrill of that game. It is what a game should be when you get to that level.

  29. This event is a model hugger nightmare. Snow tool outputs and simulated precipitation type fields will be rendered useless because of thin layers / clusters of cold mixed among warmer air saturating the atmosphere at multiple levels where the various ptype and accumulation outputs derive their input for their algorithms.

I don’t see this being much of an ice / winter weather event inside 128 or anywhere shout of the Pike. Trick area will be 495 north of the i-90 interchange. Ice north central MA and southern NH seems likely. Higher the elevation, the longer the duration / greater the impact.

  30. Sorry JJ. It was a great game. Dallas gave it their best shot, but in the end, it
wasn’t quite enough. DAK has quite a future. I see Romo being moved during the off season.

  31. This is a very tough loss. To give up a 3rd and 20 and lose on field goal at the buzzer. Since we last won a Super Bowl I rank this one up there with tough playoff losses. Dak threw for 3 touchdowns which no other rookie QB in the Super Bowl era has done. We battled back but unfortunately we lost. As tough as this loss is if you were to tell me after Romo went down we would win the NFC East and get to the playoffs I would have taken that in a heart beat.

  32. I was asked this a few weeks ago by one of my co workers and my answer is yes I do think Romo will be traded in the offseason. I was reading something online earlier that Romo wants to be traded to Denver. I hope someone is desperate out there and gives us a couple good draft picks and go out get some pass rushers. If we could get some pass rushers to go with the offensive line the QB the RB and the weapons we have on offense we will have a complete team.

    1. Yea I heard on sports radio this week that even if Prescott is loosing don’t put romo in let the kid feel the loss because he is the future of Dallas .

  33. So glad…the Dak talk was overboard as usual and I wasn’t looking forward to another week of him and the second coming.

    1. I’d say he doesn’t need a second coming……he did exceptionally well on his first. But I do feel badly for one of our family whose team lost after an exceptional game

    1. Sorry about your team Jimmy. I was looking forward seeing them in the SB even if the Patriots didn’t make it. Rodgers is looking more and more scary each game. Not looking forward to the Patriots having to possibly face him.

  34. Knowing it is still early, but I’m hoping we are not looking at a ice event in Central MA comparable to 2008. Are we? Most of us in central and northern Worcester County have PTSD from that ice storm.

  35. Well I am not worried about beating the Steelers…they couldn’t even score a touchdown last night and frankly aren’t close to our level. What I am worried about is leaving that game with more injuries.
