    1. Very sad. Many great roles in his career, but I’m sure many of us are most familiar with him in Twister. “The Extreme.” He’ll be missed.

    2. So sad. He was a good actor. In Twister (one of my favorite movies); and in Big Love (on tv) and other movies and tv shows. I actually cried a little as I had a little crush on him. It’s so hard to believe he’s gone. He will be missed.

  1. We’ve had flooding ongoing here in Plymouth, NH this morning. The Pemigewasset River has flooded from the combination of snow melt, rain, and ice jamming. One of the school’s main parking lots has flooded, I took these pictures earlier this morning of cars that did not get out in time. At least 50 cars stranded.

      1. Very little. We all got alert messages around 8:30. I took those pictures around 11:30 and I figure the flooding probably started by 10:00 maybe earlier. Not great timing, Sunday morning, a bunch of sleeping/hungover college kids. We’ve been under a Flood Watch for awhile though, and the river has flooded in a similar manner before. It ended up worse than expected due to the ice jamming, but they probably should have sent a message to get those cars out yesterday as a precaution. Many are surely ruined.

Luckily my car was not in that lot.

  2. What a difference a day makes! Yesterday like spring; today, back in winter. If it wasn’t so windy it wouldn’t be so bad. Sky looked strangely beautiful at times yesterday and early this morning. No thunder here in Sudbury last night; just a period of heavy rain.

    1. Thanks for the movie suggestion. I’m still not moving much and am looking for something new to watch. I’ll look for twister!!

      1. Hope you are feeling somewhat better, Vicki. These things sometimes last a long time. Most of the colds/flu I’ve had have lasted a long time. Hopefully, yours won’t last that long. You have GOT to see Twister. Bill Paxton is great in the movie but the movie itself is great, too – especially for people like us who are passionate about the weather. The special effects are very good – and the other actors are good, too. Like Helen Hunt. Also, Philip Seymour Hoffman played a good and likeable role, too. Hoffman unfortunately passed away also, back in 2014. He played in many excellent movies. He, too, was an excellent actor.

      2. I’ve talked to some people who are in the vaccine industry and others in the health care industry and this year’s Quadrivalent vaccine is about 50% effective. So it looks like two of the four strains included in this year’s vaccine are out there but the other two are not…instead other strains are causing this outbreak.

        1. Interesting Keith. Thanks. We all had shot and we all have flu. Except six month old who was too young to get the flu shot. I know rhe local schools are loaded with it too. Two years ago when The vaccine was not effective and Mac was undergoing chemo, this would have been very worrisome. So I figure it is what it is and I just watch TV for a while. I do worry about those who are immune compromised now though.

On that note….movie suggestions welcome. Rainshine, twister is on my list. Thanks

          1. Arrival…we just watched it the other night…awesome movie.

On the subject of the flu vaccine…I’ve been lucky…I’ve been working in healthcare for almost 11 years and getting a vaccine has been required the last 6 or 7 years. I haven’t come down with it that whole time…so at least for the vaccines have seemingly worked.

            1. I second that Arrival was a good movie. watched thursday or friday.
Keith, I have to say I do agree its a general rule that the vaccine works for the majority and I am one of those exceptions. Every year I have gotten the vaccine late that season I got sick. years I have not I did not get sick. It could be just by chance which it probably is but when it happens so often I try to avoid it.

              1. Agreed on Arrival and on the flu vaccine. We have to get ours in late September or early October. It will be interesting to see if the current flu season lasts through the spring if I actually come down with it.

            2. Just rented twister….why Netflix doesn’t have is beyond me. Will watch arrival next. Thanks

I had flu in early 2000s. Have had shot since then. If one out of about 15 years worked for me, I’d say those are excellent odds

      1. This weekend I was going to go cross-country skiing in Ipswich, NH, with a group of friends. Alas … Maybe in mid-March.

        1. was going to go up to stowe, for their race today, but it was canceled a few days ago. I have one more chance in march to race for just the 2 time since 2012 when I sadly injured myself because they did not cancel the race and i was being stupid.

        2. I remember cross country skiing one April weekend at the Jackson Ski Touring Center. Temps were in the upper 60s and I was skiing in lightweight cargo pants and a T shirt. Pretty cool.

          1. Oh I have gone in t-shirt and I am that crazy person that goes and is to hot in 40 degrees so I have a light jacket on while u see others in big winter coats lol. I am also not the biggest fan of spring skiing. I like that packed powder and I want to be freezing my behind off if I did not pack right 😀

          2. Jackson is a lovely area to cross country ski. Or just ski. We went to Tyrol a lot but I understand it went under. We either bought our skis at Carroll Reeds in North Conway or Jack Frost in Jackson. I guarantee you and I crossed paths at some point in our younger years.

            1. tyrol of what my dad said was a decent mountain and was over shadowed by wild cat. I am honestly worried that in vermont, some areas could struggle with stowe being bought out by vail. Vail has had run ins with several of the companies in charge of ski areas here in New england in the pass and won. It be interesting to say the least to see what happens.

              1. Tyrol was small but had good slopes and conditions. I never liked wildcat. I’m impressed your dad knew of it. Most do not

                1. where do you think I get my love for the sport 🙂 He has been all over the place skiing. He been skiing for a long time. im not a huge fan of wildcat either. I am more of a vermont skier anyway.

  3. Thank you, TK.

Windy, early November-like morning. At least it felt that way to me. Did my long (8 miles) run along the Charles. Birds are certainly active in spite of the mid-range forecast which calls for a winter comeback of sorts.

Saddened to see that Bill Paxton passed away. He struck me as a nice person. 61 is way too young.

    1. it was a nice late fall feel to it indeed. maybe its a sign that winter be coming back … I hope that it is a snowy march, I just hope my rose bushes do not get destroyed, Its been so warm that they have started to suck up water. 2 of the 5 rose bushes have green stems…. 🙁 Any suggestions on how to protect them from winter weather??

    1. the photo on the top right gets my attention with that purple swirl. Looking at the pictures JP posted can tell it was somewhat circular.

  4. Matt, I wish I was a gardener. Alas, I have no garden plot living in downtown Boston. My mother, however, was an avid gardener, and I loved to help out when I could. She had rose bushes. And I recall them blooming late (November!) during mild autumns, but also early budding during mild winter (sometimes as early as February). She used to drape a painter’s cloth over them at night when severe frost was predicted. They didn’t seem to mind upper 20s, but anything below 25 could present a problem. Don’t quote me on this, but this is what I remember.

  5. Any time I complain about the weather – and I’m known to do so – I should consult the Dutch meteorological site to console myself. This week’s forecast (see below) is a very typical one for winter: Hardly a glimpse of sun, spitting light rain every day, windy (southwesterly nearly all the time), mid to upper 40s with hardly any variation. I endured this for many years. Loved Holland, but with the exception of spring, could do without the climate.

  6. If it is a tornado according to the article from Ryan Hanrahan it would be first ever February tornado in Massachusetts.

      1. I saw that mentioned elsewhere..perhaps FB?… and will have to look up bookend. Thanks TK. It is certainly not a term I have heard

  7. re: above

I think my all time favorite area was Canon Mt. in NH. 😀

I never skiied them all, but I have skiied in no particular order:

    RI
    Diamond Hill

    <b<MA
Franklin (I can’t remember the name)
    Blue Hill
    Mt. Wachusett
    Mt. Tom
    Brodie Mountain
    Butternet Basin
    Jug End barn
    Berkshire East

    VT
    Stow
    Killington
    Round Top
    Okemo
    Mt. Snow

    NH
    Ragged Mt.
    Tenney Mt.
    Mt. Sunapee
    Waterville Valley
    Cannon
    Wild Cat
The Highlands (Northfield don’t think it exists??)

    ME
    Sugar Loaf

I may have missed one, but that’s all I Can think of for now. 😀

  8. Thank you again,Rainshine. Was bittersweet watching twister. I have some tears at the end. My thoughts and prayers for his family.

    1. We found out today that we have a family member that was related to
Bill Paxton. The wife of our nephew (wife’s Side) is a cousin of Bill Paxton.
We see her about yearly as they reside in VA. In any case, she posted a great
photo of Bill Paxton from years ago. It is pretty special to her. Since she posted publicly, I am sure she wouldn’t mind me sharing with you. Here it is:

      https://scontent.fbed1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/17021635_10211968532590531_6604462565658794502_n.jpg?oh=77fe35f9c8daf18aae0c2639033846df&oe=592E7B76

    2. I love that movie, however, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the special effects.
I know I can be pretty picky, but most of the sky scenes didn’t look like much
of any I have seen associated with tornadoes. Some of the tornadoes themselves left something to be desired. The last F5 going over the corn fields was truly awesome, I’ll give them that. But overall, great job on the movie.

Someone mentioned Stuart Seymour Hoffman! He was fantastic and practically stole the show! Helen Hunt was also superb.

      1. I am laughing. I kind of thought of you when I saw special effects…no lie. Overall it was really well done. I had not seen it in years so truly enjoyed

  9. Quick peak on the cod site 18z NAM goes bonkers with the shear western parts of CT and MA for Wed. CAPE is low.

    1. Yup, I surely noticed thst, however since I did not see euro agreement
I didn’t bother. Do you think it is real?
      Thanks

  10. Both 18z runs of the American models on the bullish side with the wind shear for western parts of SNE on Wed. Will see what happens as we get closer but you got to love it on 18z GFS low CAPE high shear environment for thunderstorms Wed evening then a small accumulation of snow for Fri.

  11. Well, I could not find a definition of a bookend tornado that was not too technical for me. I have the impression it is at the end of a line but may have totally made that up

    1. Thank you WxWatcher. I have been waiting for that confirmation.
Construction must not have been too good for that rating, as looking at
the damage photos, one would think a tad higher like at least an EF-2.
      Oh well, they know.

      Thanks again.

  12. The tv mets mention nothing about any snow for Friday…sun and colder with temps in the 30s. If anything, they all note another warm-up for next Sunday.

    1. It turned into quite a news story up here! I was surprised at how bad the flooding was. That’s nowhere near the worst it’s ever been, but the past couple years that I’ve been here we’ve been lucky with very little in the way of issues from spring flooding. So it was a bit of a shock to me. I feel bad for those whose cars were trapped 🙁

      1. The Pemigewasset becomes the Merrimack River passing through Concord, Manchester, NH and Lowell, MA. They’ll be seeing higher river levels a few days from now.

  13. Must apologize for not posting quizzes. Will do so next week.

(Cancer scare so had tests all week including a CT Scan. Clean bill of health so far. 🙂 One more test to go.)

Beginning to think snow chances exist in March.

  14. The recent three consecutive days of record high temperatures in Boston makes me wonder about something. What is the longest streak of consecutive record high temperatures for Boston? I am curious about what time of year this happened.

This is not too interesting back when we first started keeping the records, so maybe I should be asking about a more recent period such as the last 50 years.

  15. Ski areas I have been at.
    Mass
    Wachusett.
    Jiminy peak.

    NH
    Cannon
    Loon
    pats peak
    Attitash
    gunstock
    Cranmore
    Ragged
    waterville
    Black mt

VT (i been to vermont the most in terms of skiing)
    STOWE (favorite)
    Killington
    sugarbush
    Okemo
    Stratton
    Mt Snow
    Jay Peak.

    NY
    Gore mt.
    Whiteface

I liked both Ny mountains I have gone to. gone to Gore 2 times.
This is a mix of mountains I have gone for recreation and races. Whiteface was for a race I did.

My favorite state to ski is vermont and my favorite Mountain is Stowe for both racing and recreational skiing.

  16. In a way the Conway tornado is fortuitous for me… as it provides another potential case study for the project I’ll be working on this summer. As part of my privilege/responsibility as a student in the NOAA Hollings scholarship program, I’m required to complete a research internship over the summer preceding my senior year. My project will involve me returning to Taunton this summer, where I interned as a student volunteer last summer. This time I’ll be working full time for 10 weeks on a project aimed at improving the detection of New England tornadoes, in addition to getting some more experience in the operational aspect of the office. Ideally I’ll be working to produce improved overviews for identifying tornado-conducive synoptic/mesoscale patterns in advance, as well as studying radar patterns of tornado producing storms as they happen. I’ll be taking a general look at all of the tornadoes in Massachusetts in the past 10 or so years, but at least some I hope to take a deeper dive into. I think the Conway tornado will be a really good one for a case study. Will keep you all updated as it gets closer and hopefully end up with some good results!

    1. That is truly awesome. I am even envious of you.
I am really happy for you! I am sure you will do an outstanding job
and don’t forget that you have some truly outstanding resources here
      at your disposal. 😀

    1. Yup. Thank you for the reminder. I would not have guessed that ever!
What a small place that was. NOT worth it.

        1. No…sorry. I can see that was confusing. I was calling Ace Dad. Wondering how he and mrs ace and baby ace are

There was a Bob Johnson indoor ski school in the area yiu might remember. My dad did teach there

  17. re: tornado

Sad that a tornado occurred, but I feel good that most of us strongly suspected
tornado after viewing those very clear photos of the damage.

  18. re: “Bookend” tornado.

I have never heard the term either, however, shear logic would say that
it occurred on the other end of a thunderstorm. Ie at the front of it where
the line segment was bowed as opposed to the normal position on the rear portion of a super cell.

    That’s my guess. 😀

  19. SPC had that area in a marginal risk yesterday and did not give a percentage in the tornado category where the tornado happened.

  20. Tweet from Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan
I can find only 2 winter tornadoes in New England history – 1 in Martha’s Vineyard in Dec 1951 (I doubt it’s real) and 1 in Essex Co 12/56.

  21. First, and most importantly, sending my prayers and best wishes to you, Longshot.
I hoping for the best news for you.

To Stephen Clarke, I got bored watching the Oscars real fast so I starting researching your question about consecutive record-breaking high temps for Boston.

    It was four days, November 21-24, 1931…74, 74, 77, 72 degrees respectively.
Honorable mention is August, 1944. Records were broken on August 11-13 and then again August 15-17, six out of seven days. It was 101 on August 14, 2002 but I can’t find what record that broke.

    Hope the helps…

    And the Oscar goes to…

  22. It was 97 on August 14, 1947 which tied the record of August 14, 1944.

And so, (the envelope, please), the longest streak of consecutive record high temperatures is:
    Seven…
    August 11-17, 1944
    with highs of
    99, 101, 100, 97, 98, 97, 97.
And the record high temperature was 99 on August 5, 1944.

That must have been a brutal August with little or no AC…

    Good night, all…

    1. SAK, the coaster in your image…Is that the one that used to be at Paragon Park?
sure looks a lot like it, only painted a different color. tx.
