Wednesday Forecast

3:11AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 19-23)
High pressure centered over the Canadian Maritime Provinces noses southward toward New England and continues to send an Atlantic air flow into the region today. Low pressure will move into the St. Lawrence Valley tonight into Thursday and send a front across southern New England which will then settle just to the south and provide an avenue for another wave of low pressure to come along on Friday. The front will never get that far away and a fairly cool north to northeast air flow is expected by the weekend as another high pressure area builds across eastern Canada. This type of weather pattern usually produces plenty of cloudiness, limited sun, and occasional wet weather in southern New England.
TODAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Highs 45-52 eastern areas, 52-60 western areas. Wind E to SE 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Cloudy. A few periods of light rain west to east. Lows 43-50. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Highs 48-55 coast, 55-62 interior. Wind variable to N 5-10 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mainly cloudy. Lows 42-50. Wind light N to NE.
FRIDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain/drizzle. Highs 45-53. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Lows 38-48. Highs 48-60, coolest coast.
SUNDAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Lows 38-48. Highs 48-60, coolest coast.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 24-28)
Watching low pressure area to the south which may bring additional wet weather early in the period then a drier trend should follow. Temperatures near to below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 29-MAY 3)
Overall mainly dry but may see ocean moisture fairly dominant. Temperatures near to below normal.

    1. I heard another theory that it was not suicide, but rather: autoerotic asphyxiation

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erotic_asphyxiation

I also heard that the double homicide for which he was acquitted was not over a spilled drink, but rather over those 2 guys talking about Hernandez being gay and he didn’t want that out there.

Much being bandied about. Who knows what the truth is.

It’s too bad, because the best punishment for him was to rot in jail for
      the rest of his life.

      1. We lost a classmate in 8th grade to that. She was a great dancer and very nice person.

      2. I never would have thought about him taking his own life but then I didn’t think about him that much anyway. In hindsight (which we know is always perfect), it just doesn’t surprise me. I feel badly for his family, his child, and also for the officers who found him.

  1. It’s Mark’s birthday and it looks like I missed JJ’s yesterday.

    Happy birthday to you both!

  2. Warming up slowly this morning. 9 AM obs show about 43-45 across the area.
Decent sunshine outside of the office. I’d say 40-50% clouds, 50-60% blue sky.
I’ll take it. AND the wind is SE at the airport, which tells me just back from the coast
it will be a bit milder today.

At my house in JP a NE wind travels about 6 miles to reach me. A SE wind travels well
over 20 miles. (Depending on the exact compass value)

  3. At 10AM, temperatures across the area are running 45-47 degrees with most
reporting stations indicating a SOUTH wind. Not sure of compass reading, but
I would guess it is really more like SSE. Even so, I am somewhat surprised that
it is still only 47 out by Springfield and 46 at Logan. Not much of a spread there.

  4. Thanks TK. Happy birthday to JJ and Mark!

I posted about our potential subtropical system yesterday… well, here it is, officially classified as subtropical depression One. Not quite strong enough winds to be named, and not forecast to strengthen.

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

    1. Interesting. Pretty early that’s for sure.
Does it mean anything at all for the hurricane season?
      Likely Not.

    2. Subtropical. 🙂
I’d have left that one alone.
Pretty soon we’ll have sub subtropical, semi subtropical, kinda tropical but not really, etc.

        1. I think the names are overdone. However, on the scale of things, it is harmless and easy to ignore. I’ve been watching the media try and spin Herandez’s death into a conspiracy type theory all day. I guess I won’t complain about naming storms…..although I sure have done so in the past.

          1. It isn’t harmless though. When a weak system that really shouldn’t be named but is named makes landfall and doesn’t do much, people think “oh that wasn’t so bad”, and maybe the next time, when a stronger storm comes around, they don’t prepare as well as they should. This is especially true in areas that haven’t been hit in a long time (like New England), where many residents don’t understand the true scope of the damage that a tropical system can do.

  5. And the Magic number for the 11 AM observations is 49. 😀
49 at Logan, 49 at Bedford, 49 at Norwood, and 49 at Taunton.

  6. Thanks all for the birthday wishes and JJ, happy belated birthday to you as well!

Vicki, I don’t know how you keep track of all of this stuff. I can’t even remember my own family and friends’ birthdays!

    1. 🙂

I have a system that really is far from perfect.

I admit to missing my youngest’s and her husband’s anniversary last November. FB made it a lot easier as it reminds me of those I am friends with on FB.

  7. Following up on WxWatcher’s post from yesterday, here is CSU’s prediction for the upcoming hurricane season:

    https://www.theweathernetwork.com/us/news/articles/us-weather/colorado-state-university-atlantic-hurricane-season-2017/81140/

They are projecting a slightly below average Atlantic hurricane season with 11 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes. The overall number of storms is about 85% of average while the 2 major hurricanes is normal for a typical season.

They put the probability at 24 percent for a landfalling hurricane on the U.S. East Coast including the Florida peninsula (average for the last century is 31 percent).

They are citing the developing El Nino and lower than average Atlantic sea surface temps as the primary reasons for their predictions.

    1. Sorta like I had in my forecast.. 😉
“Partly sunny to mostly cloudy”. Started partly sunny, ended mostly cloudy. 😉

I still find it funny that so many people expected horrendous weather all week after Monday. Too much reliance on weather apps and single-icon TV forecasts.

      1. Ya think…..me too. I’ve been saying that for days. It has been a lovely week.

They just need to read here

  8. Thanks North Alisonarod Wxwatcher and Mark.
Mark sorry about your Islanders coming up a little short of making the postseason. At least the Yankees have turned things around after that 1-4 start.

    1. Yeah, the Islanders finished the season with 6 straight wins but ended up 1 point out of the playoffs behind the Bruins. That head to head 2-1 loss to the B’s in late March was the difference.

Your Rangers are still in it 2-2! I think this series may be going 7.

Yanks are pleasantly surprising me so far. Nice 8 game win streak. Could be an interesting 3 team race in the AL east this year.

      1. Mark I agree the think this is a seven game series. I could see a situation they win tomorrow night in Montreal and lose Saturday at home. I like the Rangers chances on the road. They were the best regular season road team and they were seventeen seconds away from being up two games to none.
As far as the Yankees Tanaka is there worst starter right now. CC has looked great so far, Pineda and Severino look better than last season, and Jordan Montgomery has looked good. They keep getting this type of pitching there going to be in it.

  9. I concur. Beautiful Day.

1PM obs had mostly 54, even at Logan.

At 1:30 in JP, it was 56.3

I can take this kind of April weather no problems at all. 😀

  10. Thanks Tk . Happy birthday guys . Not sure if he was murdered as some are saying they think ( not here) he was in a single cell & it was blocked from the inside. They said he tied a sheet to an above window . We will never know but he doesn’t deserve all of this publicity. Tough week as I don’t know how to dress .

    1. Just put some clothes on and roll with it. 😀
I’d be perfectly comfortable with jeans and a tee shirt. 😀

    2. If he was murdered, the person was Houdini to get out of a cell blocked from inside.

      Wear layers.

      1. The cell window he apparently tied the bed sheet to was only 3ft off the ground and the windows are encased cement so no place to wrap a sheet around to tie it off. Physics says no way he committed suicide but stranger things have happened.

          1. Yup. Just saw some late breaking details that he had John 3:16 written on his forehead, red marker on his hands and feet, and MAY have smoked synthetic marijuana that night (no idea how he would have gotten his hands on it though)

        1. I don’t know about that facility. In some of the jails and prisons, there is glass then bars and then the cell/inmate. My guess is there will be a hundred different theories and just as many stories. In the end, Hernandez is responsible for what he did and who he became. Way too much time and attention being spent on this IMO including a fool of a politician coming out and saying MA correction needs to be improved. I am not a fan of politicizing

    1. Wearing my winter coat and knit hat but I am quite confortable. Interesting is that if those temps were last month, I would have got out a light jacket and still sweating.

    1. Saturday will probably start somewhat damp, as in leftover wet ground from Friday wet weather not having a chance to really dry out due to overcast, and possible drizzle as well.

        1. Actually I didn’t see any stations with “sunny” for this Saturday.

And Harvey specifically mentioned a damp start on his weathercast.

    1. Wow right down to the exact day over a week in advance. Nice. I wanna grow up to be just like him. 😉

Oh wait, I’m older than Eric. 😉

    1. Yup. And people are already turning it into a political battle because they have nothing better to do.

      1. And again…..too much nonsense. If only these were our biggest concerns. I did hear his mom in town but either way….his decision

        1. Absolutely. People are wasting far too much time badmouthing politicians. I don’t care what side anyone’s on. It is your right to say what you want, but I think indulging in it is just a pure waste of time. But hey, if it’s their time to waste, have a party. 😉

          1. I wasn’t referring to badmouth politicians. I was referring to badmouthing Brady’s decision. As far as politicians, I firmly believe in criticizing when it is needed……and yes, I write to them good and not good.

            1. Actually I worded that incorrectly. It should have been “politically-driven badmouthing” referring to anyone.

              I agree, however.

  11. The danger of a 10-day TV forecast and having to put one # there…
    70. I saw a 70 for Saturday April 29 on a 10-day forecast today.

So now, tens of thousands of people are expecting (70s, not 70) next weekend. Now if you went by the ECMWF making that forecast, and only paid attention to the 500mb map, you may have been tempted to do that with the 70, but if you were looking closely at the surface chart, you may be a little more hesitant. If you went by the GFS, you’d be thinking much lower. Granted, they are just models. A forecaster may have arrived at that by using neither model. Regardless, it’s one #, representing a large area, 10 days in advance, in the spring, in New England. Glad I don’t have to do that.
