Friday Forecast

9:57AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 26-30)
Low pressure spins right over southern New England today then drifts to the east later today through Saturday. As has been the thinking for several days, there will be enough cool air aloft and we’ll still be in close enough proximity to low pressure to hold some cloudiness in the region, especially eastern areas as it looks now, during Saturday. A narrow sliver of high pressure should allow for more sunshine on Sunday though I’m still not expecting a completely sunny day. The next system comes along on Memorial Day Monday but this system will be weakening as it moves through so its impact may not be all that significant. By Tuesday, with the long weekend in the rear-view mirror, we’re looking at a warmer westerly flow and a disturbance possibly resulting in a few showers and thunderstorms.
TODAY: Overcast. Areas of fog and drizzle. Periods of rain, most widespread morning and midday, becoming more spotty during the afternoon. Highs 56-61. Wind variable 5-15 MPH becoming N 10-20 MPH.
TONIGHT: Breaking clouds. Lows 47-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Sun/cloud mix – clouds should be more dominant especially east. Highs 60-65 coast, 66-71 interior. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 43-48 interior, 48-53 coast. Wind light variable.
SUNDAY: Sun/cloud mix – sun should be more dominant. Highs 60-65 coast, 66-71 interior, but may cool somewhat during the afternoon. Wind light variable becoming E 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 52-57. Wind light E.
MONDAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of light rain favoring the afternoon hours. Highs 55-60 coast, 60-65 interior. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers/thunderstorms. Lows 50-58. Highs 68-76.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 31-JUN 4)
This 5-day period is expected to feature a mainly westerly flow, near normal temperatures overall, and limited shower/thunderstorm chances.

DAYS 11-15 (JUN 5-9)
This 5-day period is expected to feature somewhat unsettled weather and temperatures near to below normal.

  1. Thank you, TK. Looking like a great cookout weekend! And will be cool enough to throw in a fire 🙂

    1. Yes! Dry weather. Parts of the region will see some cloudiness. I hope nobody is expecting 100% sunshine. But what we are going to have is about an average 3-day period for late May, maybe a little on the cooler side yes, but 2 out of 3 dry days, and the “wet” day may end up not all that wet.

  2. Sun shining through the clouds here in Woburn at the moment with a thick pasty drizzle falling. I LOVE this combination. Has a bit of a surreal quality to it.

  3. Thanks, TK.

While it’s been cool and often overcast this past week (exception being last weekend), it’s been brilliant sunshine and warm in Dublin, Ireland. My daughter called a couple of times this week to say that it’s been summery all week over there. Ah yes, my silly theory holds up, at least in this instance.

For now, I take back what I said about the Red Sox. They’ve turned things around against a decent team (Rangers) that had won 11 out of 12. Give the Sox credit. They now look like a contending team. Let’s hope it lasts.

Celtics have nothing to be ashamed of. They won two rounds of playoffs, and stole a game against the Cavaliers. This said, what has surprised me all year with this Celtic team is the inconsistent defense that sometimes has such gaping holes that it allows teams to steamroll them. A couple of years ago, and even last year, defense was their trademark (also when they played the Cavs).

    Have a nice weekend, everyone.

    1. Over the years I have often observed weather here and there being fairly opposite.

Red Sox? Well, what I always say is still true. People always try to judge a season on the first 3 games, or if not that, the first month. Can’t do that. Never can do that. The rest of the season will speak for itself (and prove me right in the process). This is similar to what I said earlier about the weather, or a season, being judged before it even begins. At least I get some amusement (along with bewilderment) out of it. 😛

      Agree about the Celtics.

      Enjoy your weekend!

  4. TK…congratulations on all of your family celebrations!
    Hope everyone is well!
Thanks to all who have given the Ultimate Sacifice to keep us free, and all who currently serve.
Have a great and relaxing weekend, everyone!

  5. FYI the celtics became the colts of the NBA by making that banner saying we were not swept in 2017

  6. We’re in the “trowal” here in Wrentham today. One of my favorite weather terms 🙂
There’s been a very impressive signature of one all day with this band just sitting over parts of the area. Too bad it’s not winter, this would’ve been the jackpot band.

    1. I am hoping that this blocking that we have been in much of this month is a precursor of next winter. We will see.

      Any thoughts on that TK?

      1. We’re not in a blocking pattern right now. That occurred previously and has since pretty much broken down.

And there is zero correlation between May’s weather pattern and the weather pattern of the winter that begins several months from now.

        1. Interesting. Thanks for letting us know, TK. Like Philip I also erroneously thought we were in a blocking pattern of sorts.

And yes, your comment on the Sox is well said. I have a habit of prejudging the Red Sox while knowing that baseball is a marathon. I should know better, but because I’m more emotionally invested in the Red Sox than the other teams I get upset when they’re not performing. The Bruins are a close second. And the Patriots, well, they never underperform so there’s never anything to be upset about, except when they face the NY Giants in the Superbowl.

          1. Patriots/raiders/Steelers/Ravens/Dolphins/
            texans/(Chiefs or Broncos)
No particular order in the afc
Giants, Cowboys, Vikings, Seattle, Cardinals, Buccs (falcons or Panthers)in the NFC in no particular order

  7. Extended period of troughy weather for the next 7-10 days featuring more clouds than sunshine and scattered showers each day with the exception of Monday into Tuesday where a more steady rainfall is possible. Like TK alluded to, it could take half of June until we break out of this mess. This pattern may be “normal” for the Northeast but it does not mean we have to like it. We cannot control it, but I for one am not a fan. Have a great memorial day weekend everyone!

      1. Thank you. It is a busy weekend and pirates came out…maybe Mrs OS is as big a Jack S fan as I am 😉

  8. RE: The “didn’t get swept” banner.

SAK is 100% right. They raise banners for championships. If ESPN showed it and didn’t put up a disclaimer that it was an edited video, then they’re idiots.

The video is from the October 28 2008 banner raising for the 2008 NBA championship won by the Boston Celtics. A little clever editing was done to change “2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS” to “2017 DIDN’T GET SWEPT”.

If you have any doubt still, it will be gone after you compare the 2 videos…
    1) Fake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oBj6hFQu5Q
    2) Real: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7yccJualkA

      1. I took a nap a couple hours before that and slept for 3 1/2 hours after it. So yeah, I do sometimes. 😛

    1. Now I’m confused. Didn’t anyone say it wasn’t a fake banner? It was simply easy to see what the confusion was

  9. I’ve been a virtual follower of a good friend who is chasing the Plains etc. this season. She followed a storm from eastern Colorado last night literally all the way across Kansas by sunrise.

I’ve advised her to head south and west toward Oklahoma City and wait for storms along an outflow boundary later today. She had that plan anyway already. Smart cookie. 🙂 She may very well sleep less than I do. 😛

Oh and the WHW account will be up in a while at which time I’ll toss in an update. 🙂

  10. I for one will not be sad to see this dreary month of May depart. Unfortunately it looks like the first part of June will also be no prize. It’s the only time of the year I hate living here.

    1. It is a lovely day in Sutton. Not so much where you are? I have not minded the weather but then I never do. I just like living 🙂

  11. Much more sun this morning than I expected. Pleasant surprise. It is really nice out albeit still a tad cool.

  12. We are out at Sconset Beach on Nantucket today and it’s pretty chilly here – temp is hovering around 60 under mostly cloudy skies though we have had a few peaks of sun. It’s pretty dark and gray looking east over the ocean but I can see more in the way of blue skies off to the south. Hopefully that gets up here for tomorrow.

There’s virtually no one out at the beach here today but we have seen several seals go by poking their heads out of the water. Still beats being home by a mile!

  13. Bright and sunny here with only a few high wispy clouds. The low clouds have gone
Poof and that is a good thing. Raw NE wind here, temp about 62.

  14. Lots of clouds here. But 71. And I’m not minding the clouds. We still have not figured what to do for shade on the patio. I’m figuring once we are able to get out there it will come to us 🙂
