  1. Thanks TK
12z EURO 995 low near benchmark a week from Friday. Too bad its not winter. Perfect spot if you love snow.

    1. Fall – not winter as I read back to the end of yesterday after I posted here.

And clueless? I’m not buying it.

    1. Imho, he would make a very fine choice. Of course if chosen we will not know until next year sometime.

  2. Here is an interesting tune I stumbled upon…

For any blues fans out there (rock as well), here is a tune I had never heard before. John Lennon on vocals and rhythm guitar, Eric Clapton on lead guitar, Keith Richards on bass guitar (yes it is so) and Mitch Mitchel (Jimi Hendrix Experience) on drums. Awesome!!

        1. Are you kidding, who cares. My daughter teaches High School Spanish and I had 3 years of it, so I am at least
          familiar with it.

        2. We are a nation of immigrants. I did really well in Latin. Placed in 99 percentile in a nationwide test…..Spanish, not so much. But this is awesome.

  3. By the way…let me finish my story about the Boston Bees (Braves) and the Hurricane of 1938 that I started about 50 years ago.

The Boston Bees had a doubleheader on the day of the Hurricane of 1938. The games went on even though the conditions deteriorated because of the storm. They started the second game vs. the St. Louis Cardinals. The umpire, Beans Reardon (born in Taunton), allegedly said that the game would continue in the storm until the outfield fences blew down which they did. The final play before the game was suspended was a pop-up to shortstop that ended up in the grandstand.

I believe Philip had asked if the game was ever made up. Yes, on the next day! The Bees and Cards played the day after the hurricane! The Bees swept the twin bill on September 22. The Cards flew out on a charter plane after the second game (the only time that a ball team flew in 1938).

In the spirit of “the show must go on”, the New York Giants, the Bees’ next opponent on September 23, arrived in Boston Harbor via a boat because they couldn’t take the train as the rails in New York and Connecticut were destroyed in the storm. The series with the Giants was played as scheduled.

Just finished correcting a couple of sets of papers and I am pooped. I actually finished earlier than I thought! So I thought I’d drop you all a note!
The Chiefs versus the Raiders might be entertaining for a little bit before bed time.

    Good night, all!

    1. Thanks Captain! πŸ™‚

I find it amazing that sports teams back then were so resilient and didn’t let weather deter them much from playing their scheduled contests. I would be curious though as to how much the hurricane affected the city of Boston. It certainly devasted CT, RI and the entire South Coast including the Cape but I have no idea what, if any damage was done to the SNE interior away from the South Coast including eastern MA. I am 3rd generation Bostonian and never heard of any old timers including my grandparents mention any particular property destruction or power outages, etc. and I have never seen any photos of Boston after the hurricane in any books or TV. I have seen photos of Boston after the Atlantic Hurricane of 1944 in which damage was relatively minor.

      1. You have heard my story here. But nothing stops me from repeating. Sorry TK and anyone else who has heard this a dozen times. TK may have been placing bets on whether I’d repeat ;). Remember, I’m just answering philips question !!!

My mom and her mom figured the storm was far away and went to Crawford Hollidges (older folks may recall the name) dept store in Boston by trolley and subway from Belmont that morning. By the time they headed back, everything was a mess. They reached Harvard square but trolleys had stopped going out so they decided to walk to Belmont. My mom said trees and wires were down all around them. A Belmont cab drive for Morse Taxi recognized them as he drove by them near Mount auburn cemetery. He picked them up and chances are he saved their lives.

I’d say it was very bad in Boston.

  4. It looks to me as if the “Cold/Cool” air gets cut off at the pass with only a glancing blow
around or about 11/3 or so.

    Hmmm

I wonder how this October will rank in terms of warmest Octobers?
I suspect top 5, perhaps even topping the list. We shall see. Our high temps
are good enough, but it may be the cooler nights that prevent us from a record.

  5. Great stories Vicki and Capt. Appreciate it.
I’m old, but not that old, so I wasn’t around for that one.

My Dad mentioned it on a few occasions, but I don’t remember all that much.

  6. For any bloggers with an ANDROID phone, here is a link
to a new version of the WHW Weather App.

    https://mega.nz/#!tTh3wBjT!nRnmnyXT1eE8yW5UVPvN-bM2YMoQqhbnt1zK1lt9Jr8

This link does NOT install the APP, but rather allow one to download it
to their phone. One needs a file manager to install it.

I have done this several times and it works just fine.

I have a file Manager in my Samsung APPS. Most phones have one.
If not, a file manager can easily be installed from the Google play store.

    Good luck

  7. Thanks Vicki for sharing that story. You may have posted it many times here, but it is the first reading for me. Obviously Boston was greatly affected by the 1938 Hurricane. I would be curious as to how many dollars in damage for the city of Boston itself.

One of these days I will try to do some research.

    1. You’re are welcome, Philip. Thank you for giving me the opportunity πŸ™‚ The resilience of the team is truly amazing. I was shocked when Captain said they finished the game the next day.

  8. Looks to be a warm winter? Anyone think it would be a waste of money to buy a season ski pass at blue hills?

    1. Only a Gut feeling, but I would say a waste of money. But, See what TK has to say.

Ski season at Blue Hill is ALWAYS a crap shoot at best.

    2. It might not be a bad bet for your kids to learn. I’d also check with someone who has used it. But it is close to you and my guess is, if they make snow, the lower slopes are the ones that will be better groomed. Is that the closest to you?

    3. It is the closest to me. I was considering wachusetts but it get so busy there during the weekends. If it’s warmer than normal then I think the snow making will suffer greatly. I think I will look into southern New Hampshire. I really wanted to ski somewhere during the week after work.

      1. Ahhh – for you. As I think you know, my brother lives in Bow NH and skies at Sunapee pretty much daily. He’s in his young 70s so can find the time although he still works. Nashoba Valley might be another thought. They also used to have a great ski school for kids.

      2. Wachusett has night skiing as far as I know, but I have no clue
how busy it gets at night. I know weekends are a ZOO.

        1. Weekends are a zoo, but Sunday nights its a snow desert with no one on them πŸ˜€ Also PS prices are cheaper πŸ™‚

  9. Wachusett is the best for a late afternoon or evening as its open until 11. Lines monday through thursday are fine including the evenings

    1. The last time I skiied there was in the 60s, long before the chair lift to the summit. πŸ˜€

I have been there several times since, but not to ski. In fact, I have not
      skiied since 1973. πŸ˜€

      1. I stopped shortly after you. It used to be that a family of four could go nearly every weekend. Sadly, as weather became uncooperative and things naturally increased in price, that is no longer true

        1. My dad said just randomly saying to his parents I’m going to a mtn after school was almost a weekly event with my uncle and his friend. He said there was no where near as much homework that kids have now and less overall pressure. He said it was not surprising to see a bunch of kids from the same school going straight from school. With the prices, Wachusett is not bad, their prices are the most reasonable for what you get. I have to say some of my best ski days were at Wachusett. I probably will not be going to Stowe which is now owned by #$!@(*&^ VAIL. Stowe and Stratton are my favorite places to go, but Stratton has been slowely making its way up to Stowe and probably has by passed Stowe on my list as its now owned by Vail.

              1. Awesome link. Thanks.

We have at least one resident bear also. I love it.

The baby foxes from behind our house are now screeching at night too

            1. Love it. Was golfing once in town out here and one was crossed the fairway. I have heard them at night from time to time along with coyote of course a there’s plenty of those.

  10. Cool pictures, Vicki! I love bobcats. Knew they were in Western Mass., but didn’t know they were in Sutton. I believe that at one time they roamed the Blue Hills.

    1. I really would love to see one. I love that they are coming back. And the best part is the folks here just accept them for the most part

      Thank you, Joshua!!
