Sunday Forecast

4:00AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 29-NOVEMBER 2)
Not a lot of change to the coming event. A front sits oriented basically north-south over the region. Low pressure forms on it and intensifies while moving up the front and across southern New England tonight. All the while TS Philippe moves rapidly north northeastward in the warm/moist southerly flow ahead of the front and its moisture becomes involved in the developing low with its circulation eventually being absorbed by it as it goes by as a transitioning, very small system, passing southeast to east of New England during this process. This system is going to have some significant variability with its wind strength and its rain amounts. There will probably be a ribbon of rain that is oriented south-north somewhere in eastern areas that as higher than most other locations. So while I am expecting a general 1-3 inches of rain, lean toward the higher amounts only where this ribbon of heavier rain exists. Behind this system expect one more push of showers with upper level energy Monday before a drying west wind overtakes the region and continues into Tuesday before diminishing. As November gets underway, we’ll transition from a chilly and tranquil start to the new month Wednesday to a milder and unsettled Thursday as a warm front moves in.
TODAY: Mostly cloudy.
Passing showers through midday then isolated showers east and scattered showers west after 1PM. Highs 60-67. Wind S to SE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts by late in the day.
TONIGHT: Overcast with moderate to heavy rain arriving evening then becoming more occasional interior while likely lasting longer in a heavier band over some eastern areas overnight. Thunderstorms possible. Local flooding, especially on streets and in parking lots with leaf-clogged storm drains. Leaves on roads will make them slippery as well. Lows 53-60. Wind SE 15-25 MPH with gusts 35-50 MPH central MA and southwestern NH, and 25-35 MPH with gusts 45-60 MPH elsewhere. There may be pockets of even stronger wind gusts especially where heaviest rain occurs.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy with passing rain showers morning and midday, some of which can still be heavy and may contain thunder. Partly sunny remainder of day. Highs 60-67. Wind SW shifting to W 15-25 MPH gusting 35-45 MPH, especially in the afternoon.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 50s. Evening temperatures in the 40s. Breezy during the day, less wind evening.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 50s.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of light rain favoring northern MA and southern NH. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 60s.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 3-7)
Current timing suggests a cold front crossing the region with a chance of showers November 3, high pressure settling in with fair and cooler weather November 4 and possibly into November 5 before warm air attempts a comeback later November 5 or November 6 with more cloudiness and possible wet weather. Another cold front approaches by the end of the period and may bring rain showers with mild air ahead of it.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 8-12)
The upper level pattern will feature a flat ridge in the US Southeast with a trough over the West. For New England this means a largely west southwest flow, airmass changes but a milder than normal pattern overall. For details we may be cooler early in the period, mild and somewhat unsettled later in the period.

  1. Thanks TK.
High Wind Warning up for all of SNE. Now we sit back and wait and see what happens.
Today in weather history: 2012 Sandy 2011 Snowtober.

    1. Expand the look at the last week of October going back quite a distance, even beyond The Perfect Storm 1991 and you’ll find this period favorable for large events.

Lingering summer water and air warmth, early chill both aloft and surface (Canada) and they occasionally mix with significant results, with this particular period of time being a mini climate-peak for such events.

  2. TK – I usually leave for work by 6:00 am. Will the rain in Boston be over by then? I can deal with the wind but my concern is waiting for my bus in a downpour.

    1. I can’t say with confidence it will be “over” but I am pretty sure the heaviest band, should it set up over Boston, should be offshore by then. But there may be some additional bands of showers with some heavy pockets that may be in the area. The worst of the first part of the wind should be just over so we should be in a lull then. Plan for the worst in case.

  3. 6Z 3KM NAM Wind Gusts in knots for 4Z tomorrow OR Midnight tomorrow:

    https://imgur.com/a/gXz4d

    Remember 1 knot = 1.15078 mph

So the peak wind gust forecast for Boston is 58 knots OR 66.74 mph

That is WINDY. Does this mean the 3KM NAM will verify? Nope, BUT it gives
us an idea of what may be coming.

        1. That’s the low level Jet above us. Discussion never said
those winds would be at the surface.

Surface winds to 60+ mph in gusts.

          1. Ohhhh. Well see what my focus was anyway. Thanks. I guess I can stay here. 60+ is nothing to sneeze at.

    1. Love it!!

I have a favorite photographer in Sutton…April Eaton Brown. My house could double as an exhibit for her work. She has a yearly ornament. This year is the gazebo on the common where people can sponsor a tree. We of course have a tree for Mac. The ornaments are limited to 100 and numbered. April is saving #11 for me 🙂

    A) 48 degrees
    B) 38 degrees
    C) 28 degrees
    D) 18 degrees

    2. The 1989 World Series was interrupted by …

    A) Darkness
    B) An earthquake
    C) Flash flooding
    D) A powerful snowsquall

    Answers later today.

  5. Well lost power…. and the storm is not until later and i needed to send something by email this morning

  6. Speaking of which, maybe a good idea to charge up all batteries…lap tops, cell phones, etc.
Also bring in Halloween decorations and unplug the inflatable ones….
    School delays in the morning????

    1. I’m wondering about possible effects on school tomorrow.

Many, many roads the busses go down in marshfield are under a canopy of trees. Depending on how long and high the gusts are, I can see problems with some roads blocked by fallen trees.

          1. It’s not a waste if it’s for a good reason. That said, I only expect very spotty issues regarding getting to and from any schools.

            1. Oh I absolutely agree TK. It’s just that nowadays many districts want to make up every little day missed given the 180-day rule.

  7. C For the first trivia question I believe it was the 97 World Series between the Marlins and Indians.
    B For 2nd trivia question

  8. Thanks, TK. Looks like a pretty strong storm tonight. Wish it was mid December and we had some cold air to work with, and the system would pass over the benchmark.

It’s been a good World Series. But, I’m sorely disappointed in MLB leadership. It’s enough to turn me off the game entirely. They’re as bad as the NFL commissioner’s office. Gurriel should have been suspended during the World Series, and not in April of 2018 when it’s irrelevant. What he did was not only disheartening, it was the lowest blow I’ve seen in any sporting event. Yu Darvish’s incredibly articulate and thoughtful reaction was an antidote. Nevertheless, racism is racism is racism (white-on-black, black-on-white, brown-on-yellow, yellow-on-brown, … you get the point). Had Yu Darvish been black or Hispanic and Gurriel white, and had acted in a derogatory way towards blacks or Hispanics, I am convinced he would have suspended immediately. There would also be national outrage. But, because we somehow downplay racism towards Asians (I’ve literally heard people say “ah, they’re better at accepting and getting over it”), we essentially turn a blind eye. Sure, the union would have protested an immediate suspension, but that would have exposed them and the players as hypocrites. Those MLB and NFL infomercials we see on TV with players declaring “no to racism” … in my view, they’re meaningless gestures.

  9. Current radar has a wide area of rain all over SNE as Far East as 495. According to Barry’s futurecast the rain barely gets into the Berkshires not arriving in the east until very late day.

Glad I took my umbrella to work with me anyway. I get out at 3. 😉

    1. I was just going to post.

Current radar indicates that the Pats game is going to be WET and eventually
      windy. Could be interesting.

      1. On this run, seems the wind and rain plume have moved west some. I was looking at the simulated radar and the heavy convective band, which previously was projected for cape cod and skimming eastern mass seems to be over central mass.

I don’t know if this idea is correct …..

          1. One of these times, these surface gust projections are going to verify. Hopefully, this isn’t the occasion. 🙂 🙂

  10. JPD…I would be curious as to what model Barry used on this morning’s broadcast. No way it will verify. Getting dark and light rain falling here. Huge blob ready to pounce so no way eastern sections escape IMHO.

        1. It refreshed since I first looked. Now blob appears to
be passing West of Gillette with lighter rains approaching or over Gillette.

    1. I think I’ll put chairs down on deck and patio and maybe upend glass table.

      Is this source relatively reliable.

      1. Ahhh. Silly me. And silly you thinking this old mind can remember from time I read it. And sad part is I read it twice. I seem to be focusing on speed and not direction.

        Thank you, TK 🙂

  11. Before you toss the lack-of-rain forecast in the trash for this afternoon this far east, watch the radar trend in the next couple hours.

          1. We had 2 quick showers during our Halloween Parade then another longer period of rain after it ended. Eventually we all get invaded.

  12. Steady light rain most of the day here in Plymouth, NH. Keeping an eye on the Pemi River with minor to borderline moderate flooding expected.

Pats trying to hang on for an ugly win, Much as the defense has progressed this season, the offense seems to have regressed, and Gostkowski is wild with his accuracy. Need a new kicker next year. Gostkowski may not be “bad” yet, but he’s past peak. That’s been clear for awhile.

    1. I’ve always enjoyed your insights. What are your thoughts in terms of rain and wind this evening east of 495?

      1. I think TK and plenty of others have it covered quite well. Rain amounts look generally under 3″ everywhere in SNE, most places near or below 2″. Even after the rain earlier last week, that won’t cause many problems given the preceding drought. Wind may be the biggest issue. Gusts 45+ possible anywhere. Maxing out around 70mph Cape and Islands. Some trees will be downed, with some power outages. It’s a big storm, no doubt, but nothing I think we can’t handle.

  13. I went to Market 32 in Sutton to so some very quick grocery shopping late morning

There were six lanes open with at least 10-15 carts deep in each. I was fifth in the under 20 lane. Self serve was backed up

Is snow in the forecast? Sure as heck cannot be because of wind…..who in heavens name would stock up on food if we might lose power?

  14. Brady was lucky to get out that game alive. I think he did remarkably well
under the circumstances. Still threw for more than 300 yards. The defense did a nice job. I don’t even consider it an ugly win. It was a nice hard fought win against decent competition. Anyway, that’s how I feel after watching the game.

  15. Just had a band of some heavier rain, wind def picked up with the heavier stuff. I wish this was snow 🙂

    1. Ya think? How’s this?

      DAMAGING WINDS…

Advertising 50-60 mph SE gusts across the interior, 60 to 70 for the
coastal plain and coastline, with the possibility of 70+ mph gusts
along the immediate coast and across the islands (hurricane-force).

Anticipating widespread tree damage lending to scattered to numerous
power outages, likely some structural damage occurring. Keeping in
      mind fully leafed trees.

Again combination of lapse rates and precipitation drag contributing
to winds mixing down to the surface. Greatest concern is around the
midnight and shortly after timeframe. HIGH WIND WARNING continues.

    1) The temperature of the coldest World Series game on record was:

    A) 48 degrees
    B ) 38 degrees
    C) 28 degrees
    D) 18 degrees

    The answer is B.

    2. The 1989 World Series was interrupted by …

    A) Darkness
    B) An earthquake
    C) Flash flooding
    D) A powerful snowsquall

    The answer is B.

    1. Thank you, Lomgshot

I do not recall if anyone got #1. I suspect we all remember 2. Many of us were watching. Macs brother and his family were here visiting from Oakland. It was shortly after Hugo and I recall his concern was that the quake would take resources from SC which I thought was an amazing thought

      1. I got #1 🙂 🙂 🙂

I knew people in the stadium in ’89 and in the Oakland downtown area. Wild.
If I recall, no one died. I hope I am right.
The elevated highway broke up and just ended in mid air.

  17. This storm will continue to deepen well after the “center” moves onshore in the NJ/NYC area in the next few hours. It’s an “inside runner” track. Translated to a typical mid-winter scenario, would’ve been a coastal mix/rain and a skiers delight inland. Winds stay very gusty on the backside tomorrow as colder air starts rushing in. Typical cold season storm track and behavior in several senses, but definitely a strong one and with the added tropical connection.

    1. I have a suspicion even in winter this would have turned to rain all the way into the mountains, unless we had an exceedingly cold air mass just to the north and locked deeply enough over the mountains.

  18. Block Island, Ri now gusting to 32 mph. Actually that might be knots.

In any case, I was just outside and I can feel the very beginning of an East to SE wind
    just picking up a tad.

Btw, this system looks to be a bit like the perfect storm and a bit of Sandy all rolled into
one. Now we shall see if these dire wind forecasts verify. Not long now….

  19. We have had an E ENE wind here for a few hours….very light. It is. Ore east now than it has been which blow directly in my livingroom window. It is moving the drapes doe the first time

Oddly, we have a flash flood warning on wunder but NOT wind

Rain picking up. I do not want to have to close windows. Arghhh

    1. Arghhhhh I had to close windows. Wind definitely picking up. Neighbors flag blowing steadily for first time today

    1. We lost power for about an hour from roughly 8:30-9:30 and then again at 12:40am. Power is still out in half of Chelmsford.

  20. Still up here. Wind is picking up here quite a bit. Has that winter sound to it 🙂

Hoping my antennas survive. Back a few years ago I was out during Irene trying to tie down a big wire loop antenna that had come apart from it’s control box.

    1. Keith I’ll think positive re your antennas.

I was just watching out window and thought there should be snow with this

      1. I was thinking the same thing. We just had a gust that had to be over 40. Picking up very quickly. I’ll have trouble sleeping with the wind tonight.

  21. My area of Westford (SE – about 1 mile from the borders of Carlisle and Lexington) happily still has power for the moment but the wind is howling! Thankfully we put in a stand by generator 2 years ago. Thanks for always remembering where we are Vicki!

  22. Really getting pounded here in Coventry CT as well. Heavy driving rain and gusts in the 50s. We are up over 3″ of rain and portions of the state have already recorded over 4″. Flash flood warnings in effect and lightning and thunder reported on the shoreline. I was out earlier (around 930) and already a lot of small branches down in the road. A portion of the left lane of I 384 was also flooded due to clogged catch basins…saw the lake in the road just in the nick of time!

  23. While the wind continues to howl, the rain has finally let up as it appears we have been dry slotted. Just measured about 3.5″ in the rain gauge. So much for being on the drier side of the storm! That’s just shy of 9″ of rain now here in Coventry in the past 6 days!

  24. Now 165,000 without power in CT as of 2am and the numbers keep going up. I’m afraid I may not be getting my power back anytime soon. On the positive side, the rain has finally ended and the wind is noticeably less.

  25. Fierce wind gusts, still raining, large branch in road. Loud thump when it fell. Very interesting night.

  26. Quieting down here …at least for a bit. We are right on edge of S/N rain band. Just about 2.66 inches so far

  27. NWS-BOX (down the street) reported a gust of 67 mph just shy of midnight. 4.94″ in the bucket.

  28. A lot of school closings and delays across CT today. The wind was howling where I am around midnight. It was the first time it was that strong since Sandy. I lost power briefly but it came back in time for me to see a great ending to game five of the World Series.

  29. Schools closed here in Coventry as well due to numerous downed power lines an street closures. Lost power around 1am and it’s still out.

160,000 without power in CT right now, was up to 180,000 at one point.

  30. Some schools closed or delays in MA and NH but from what I saw on TV are well N-W of Boston. Not totally certain to the south.

  31. I just happened to turn on the Today show and the reporter on Cape Cod just said the “eye” of the storm is currently passing over??? Seriously!

  32. I guess all the winter storms have brought down Marshfield’s weaker trees.

    School today, no delay ….

    The 180 day journey to June 11th continues. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  33. Son in law drives back roads Sutton to Wellesley and said it was a tough go. A lot of detours with downed trees and wires

  34. Enjoying catching up on everyone’s experience with the storm this morning! We’re wrapping up one of the most impactful storms of the decade for our region. IMO the forecasts really weren’t that bad. If we look at it from a probabilistic standpoint, which we should, most of the impacts were close to or within the expected ranges, but on the high end. In a storm like this, however, hitting the high end of the range or just above it ramps the damage up considerably. Maybe we (the wx community in general) came up a little short on our messaging before the storm, rather than our forecast. The potential meteorological impacts were well noted, but some seem caught off guard by the widespread tree damage and hundreds of thousands of power outages. I’m sure they’ll be plenty more retrospective takes on this event, but that’s just a few early thoughts from me.

Here in Plymouth, NH… A fresh ~3″ of rain since yesterday. Windy, but all gusts under 50mph. All eyes on the Pemi River here now, which is going into a flood event. May be a significant flood, current forecast crest around 17.9′ is 4.9′ above the flood stage of 13′. Will cause significant inundation in some areas if it verifies.

    1. Wow, Wx. I’ll have to find a map to see the areas that will be affected by Pemi. I’m assuming it will translate downriver. Or is that an incorrect assumption?

  35. Sun has arrived from S / SW but looks as if there is a wall of clouds behind it. Awesome, awesome sky and still some nice little gusts and a steady enough breeze that the wind is whistling through the house.

    1. Correct, solid blue behind the wall. The sky has that almost yellowish look that I seem to recall after (and before) hurricanes or tropical storms.

  36. Quite a few towns canceled school on the South Shore. Plymouth originally had a 2 hour delay and just canceled. I am in the Silver Lake district which is Kingston, Halifax, and Plympton. Had to take a couple of detours to get to the office this morning due to closed roads. Silver Lake didn’t make the decision to close until after the busses had started picking up the high school kids. The busses had to circle back and drop the kids back off at home.

    1. Good grief, Sue. Uxbridge had two hours and then closed for the day also. They did this once last year too. How difficult for kids and parents.

Glad you are safely at office. Do you have power? Your branches? Or too soon to know about branches?

      1. My office has power (plus a generator). We have 13 branches that are without power at this time. Fun morning.

        1. Oh boy, Sue. Can they open when there is no power? Does their equipment need resets of any type once power returns. It will not be an easy day for you I’m sure.

          1. If we know that it is going to be a short-term power outage the branches can process transactions manually. Unfortunately we don’t have any estimates for repair time yet. And power outages tend to wreak havoc on my ATMs. Been a fun morning already. 🙂

  37. Good morning,

So I went to sleep around midnight. The wind was nothing. I watched out the window
for a good long time and it was no great shakes. Perhaps up to 30 mph or so.
Nothing woke me up but the alarm at 7AM. I missed it all and based on my neighborhood, I didn’t miss much. The only thing that came down from trees in
my neighborhood were leaves. 😀 I certainly know that other areas were hit hard.

But, the RAIN! wow! Did it ever rain. 3.68 inches

Here is a chart for the week.

    https://imgur.com/a/nGD5G

    1. Wow – I was wondering where you were. I am surprised that the wind was not significant. It sure was here but not as strong as east and south of here I think.

      1. Unless it is a disaster of some sort, I don’t stay up.
If I am tired, I go to bed. As far as during the evening, I was
watching TV with my wife, so I wasn’t going to abandon her
to watch the weather dials. 😀 😀

I thought if it were bad, the wind would wake me up and I would take a peek. NEVER heard a thing, not to say it wasn’t windy, but not enough to make sufficient noise to wake me up. 😀 😀 😀

        1. I suspect the noise here was because the wind was driving the rain directly into the side of the house where my bedroom is…the noise was incredible.

  38. A lot of trees and branches down in Hingham. Power stayed on but we lost cable/internet as a hunk of a tree came down and took out the line from the pole. Antennas all survived (with a small repair needed).

    1. Well, the antennas are the most important thing. Happy they survived. 😀

I didn’t even see so much as a branch down on the way into the office.

Does anyone have a peak wind gust report?

      1. Mark – I think it was Mark – posted winds around 2:30 am. Westerly recorded a 67. I think I saw another 67. But there could easily be higher winds here.

I suspect a lot of the trees down are due to both wind and the fact that the ground is saturated from rain earlier in the week. I just went out to pull trash/recycling bins in before they blew down the street and my feet kept sinking into the lawn. And our lawn in that area is relatively thick and well established.

  39. Despite Umass being open my classes were cancelled, as a tree fell into his house. he has a bunch of his family from PR since they lost everything so while they get on their feet here, he has been keeping like 25 people in a 5 person house. Can only imagine what those people were thinking despite it not being as strong as winds as that Hurricane. Any wind probably scares them still.
In my area. power went out for a bit but was back on . Station recorded 63 as the highest gusts.
    3.2 inches of rain
Winds around 35 MPH for a time last night
Highest Gusts in the mid-60s ( system went off line when the power went out, no record after 1am). I have no idea why this happened as my system is in tact must be a loose wire.
PS> I live on a freshwater marsh and east/ north winds funnel through it. So I sometimes get some stronger winds than if it was not opened.

  40. Hope all is well with everyone. I hear that central Mass. (Vicki’ territory) got hit hardest? I am not a deep sleeper, but must have slept deeply last night because I didn’t hear much rain or wind. But, when I got up at 5:15am my new rain gauge indicated at least 3 inches of rain! Wow! We have some flooding in our building – boiler room. The pilings are happy, though.

Didn’t watch the World Series game last night. How dumb of me. Gosh, this is an absolutely epic series. Any game that ends in 13-12 is exciting, but a WS game … that’s insane. I have never been a big fan of Clayton Kershaw. I think he may be the most overrated pitcher in baseball. I always hear accolades about this guy and I don’t get it. I consider myself a connaisseur of sorts when it comes to knowing pitchers’ quality as well as hitters. I’ve watched Kershaw pitch many times. He doesn’t impress me the way Bumgarner does, or Verlander, or Lester for that matter. He reminds me of David Price. Good stuff, able to win plenty of games, but not very good on a big stage and against real competition (I don’t consider the national league as offering much real competition).

    1. Hi Joshua…..hmmm. I didn’t know that but sure did enjoy the show even if it was middle of the night. Today is awesome also. Hope all is well with you !!

  41. I was upset when the power went out briefly around midnight and was glad it came back to watch the ending of an instant game five classic. Multiple games in this series to me game two and game five have been classics. The last time I remember a World Series with this many instant classic was 2001 Diamondbacks Yankees series.

    1. Thank you. Awesome. Much appreciated as I didn’t have time to go
      looking for this.

An observation. I believe Logan’s Rain gauge to be highly suspect.

Looking at the observations Around the City, I just don’t buy it. True, the amounts can vary. But I find that my rain gauge was right in line with
neighboring observations, but WAY off from Logan.

On the other hand, Logan’s Max Wind Gust of 53, is exactly in line
with what happened at my house. Funny, but I believe that figure, but
      NOT the rain.

Btw, Had 3.68 inches at my house and 5 miles away at the Airport, 1.94 inches.
      C’mon boys, something is up.

      1. I had 3 inches (Back Bay). The rain should did dry up fairly fast with all the wind. I just went for a jog on the Esplanade and there were very few puddles. Wind is pretty strong right now. Gusty across the Mass. Ave. bridge. The Charles also has some wave action going.

  42. The Pemi River here in Plymouth, NH is just about to crest. 18.83′ right now, may just squeak out 19′. That looks to be good for 14th highest crest on record, the highest since Irene in 2011 sent the river level over 21.5′. Plenty of water flooding into the prone locations. The flooding has definitely been the story up this way more so than the wind.

    https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nh/nwis/uv?site_no=01076500

  43. Complete mess near my house this morning. I have a tree down at the edge of the lawn. Another tree was down blocking the road about a 1/4 mile from my house and took down probably 150 feet of power lines. I got around that by driving partially off road in the mud only to come up to additional wires down in the road which was blocked off with yellow caution tape! I have been out of power since 1AM and am hearing I may not get it back until Wednesday. Ugh. About 25% of Coventry is without power and still 130,000 people in CT overall (down from 180,000 at the height of the storm).

Our office in Manchester also had no power this morning but our main building was running on backup generator. I arrived to find a large tree resting on the power lines in front of our building and the road is closed to through traffic. Some crews just arrived to remove it.

I took pictures and will post a few later.

    1. Will look forward to photos, Mark. Glad you are all right. We drove through parts of Sutton today to get to the shoppes in Millbury. A lot of work to be done for sure. Reports I’m reading on FB seem to indicate National Grid is doing a good job getting folks back on line here. But I think your winds and certainly your rain was more than here.

  44. JJ, the 2011 WS had several instant classics, too. And, you’re right about 2001. That was some series. Because of the then very recent events of 9/11 I was rooting for the Yankees, even though I’m a Red Sox fan. I felt very badly for the city of New York. I also have a close friend who lost her brother that day (South Tower).

By the way, we weren’t the only ones experiencing storms. Parts of Europe got nailed again. This link shows an aborted landing due to high winds. I’m a reluctant flyer, even though I’ve flown quite a bit in my life. Watching these video’s doesn’t make flying any easier.
