  1. I know next week is supposed to be cold – and I hate to bring up the stupid phone app – but it shows mid 40’s all next week which is about the same we had this week.

  2. good morning and thank you tk.
your 4/28 anniv. storm from the 12z cfs is gone with the 0z cfs run. now ther’s a surprise.

      1. At what point does the “equivalent sun angle” discussion become moot? in other words, is there a day during the year when there is no equivalent and it is what it is

        1. The solstice

Either of the two times in the year, the summer solstice and the winter solstice, when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon, marked by the longest and shortest days.

For any other day, we can talk about an equivalent. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

          1. Thanks JpDave, that’s what I figured. I guess sometimes I don’t understand the point of the equivalent sun angle discussions

            1. The cool part is that while its equivalent in elevation and length of day, there is zero comparison in terms of what’s being used to heat the air.

Today’s sun is equivalent to about Sept 14th. On Sept 14th, the ground is devoid of snow probably up to 70N or the arctic ocean. Much of that sun’s energy goes into the ground. Conversely, today, on March 28th, all the sun falling north of 45N is being reflected into space by snowcover, all the ice on Hudson Bay is reflecting all that sunlight, etc. So, in terms of heating potential, that Sept sun blows away the March sun.

  3. Hi TK,

Anyway you could give me a local forecast for Lenox Ma this weekend? 40s or 50s? Rain or sun weather app is useless.

    Thank you,
    TJ

  4. Good afternoon,

Just came in. What a beauty of a day. Car thermometer was reading 52 and it felt it
as well. Nice warm sun. SPRING!

  5. I walked down Mass Ave in Central Sq at lunch with a short sleeve shirt.
Noticed that some of the ornamental trees (some kind of maple) are starting to bud a little. Not open yet, another couple weeks maybe, but I notice them every spring. And they are right on time. The clumps of day lilies that have been cut and dead all winter are showing some short green shoots. Also right on time.
The willow trees are for sure starting to show some green hue. They start pretty early. late March. So again, right on time.

  6. Regarding the CFS: Don’t think for a moment that I put any stock in deterministic weather on that thing. It’s a model, it has to predict “something”. I look at the upper air trends on it, and I look at the surface maps for fun, you know, kind of like the AccuWeather million-day forecast. Joke. Fun. Haha. Sometimes I turn away from the serious side of my profession for a few minutes. πŸ™‚

ECMWF is running late today. Kudos to the GFS for seeing the upcoming timing sooner than all other medium range guidance, and I initially discounted it.

    1. We know that, or at least I know that. Anything I posted was continuing the Joke or Fun. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  7. Shopping in Brookline today on my day off and there are still good mounds of old, dirty snow on shady sides of streets including Beacon Street. So much for that strong March sun angle. πŸ˜‰

    1. Snow piled on sidewalks such that a parked car would have no access in or out of the passenger side.

    2. No, the sun is doing its thing. We had a big snowstorm very late in the season, and then several nights of freeze after only a partial melt because of a cold stretch. This does not happen very often.

      1. Yeah all I have really left are the artificial piles where I shoveled a lot of the snow. Guessing they will be gone by the weekend.

  8. So, remember that football game that the patriots lost. Well, we should have lost with the new rules, problem is, the refs were using the new rules during the super bowl before them properly being put in place by vote. In other words, No one can say the refs favor the patriots ever again.

end of rant of old news.
Warmer out today. felt good to go outside after a stressful class lol

    1. Don’t forget the Eagles were in an illegal offensive formation for the TD caught by their QB. Refs blew that call too.

  9. Dez Bryant for my Cowboys against Packers catch would have been a catch with the new rule in the playoff game. I am not bitter about since our defense could not stop Green Bay that second half and I always felt if that was ruled a catch the Packers offense was rolling and could not be stopped.

    1. We’ll be near a boundary often. Not all the days will be very chill. Some may be very mild.

My wager is the first half of April lands within 1 degree of normal in Boston.
