Tuesday Forecast

7:20AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 17-21)
Upper level low pressure tracks eastward across New England today, triggering scattered showers. High pressure brings fair weather Wednesday. Low pressure moves rapidly east and passes over or just south of southern New England during Thursday, which will be a wet day. Enough cold air may work in for some mixing with snow northwest of Boston at night, and a few rain and evening mixed rain/snow showers will occur behind the system Friday as the surface system departs but upper level low pressure will still have to cross the region. High pressure will build across eastern Canada by Saturday but this time it will be configured in such a way that it will deliver fair weather to the region with a northwest to north wind. Forecast details…
TODAY: Sunny to partly cloudy morning. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers afternoon. Highs 47-54. Wind SW to W 10-20 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered rain and/or snow showers earoy. Lows 32-39. Wind W 10-20 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 48-55. Wind WNW 10-20 MPH, diminishing late.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clouding over. Lows 34-40. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Cloudy with periods of rain, may mix with snow far northwest of Boston at night. Highs 43-51. Wind E 10-20 MPH, shifting to N late.
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered rain/mix showers. Lows from the upper 30s to lower 40s. Highs from the middle 40s to lower 50s.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows from the middle 30s to lower 40s. Highs from the upper 40s to middle 50s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 22-26)
High pressure should protect the region with dry weather April 22-23. Low pressure threatens to bring wet weather sometime during the April 24-26 period. Temperatures mainly below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 27-MAY 1)
A little more pattern amplification is possible but initially we may end up on the warm side of it and cannot rule out a couple very warm days before April ends.

  1. Regarding Longshot’s trivia question yesterday about the Boston Marathon, how was a volcanic eruption a factor?

    1. I seem to recall the ash from an eruption hindered travel plans for many who were trying to fly to Boston. I think this was in the not too distant past. And I could have made that entire story up in my head πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      1. There was an eruption in Ice Land I believe and halting air
traffic all over Europe. Not sure if this is the one, but sound
about the right time of year. My daughter was in Spain
with her Spanish Students and just barely got in and out of
        Madrid.

          1. This is correct. Many never made it to the Marathon because of flight and other problems related to this eruption.

  2. 12z NAM shows under an inch for Boston but would be enough to get Boston to 60 inches of snow for the season.

  3. Thank you, TK.

Yesterday, while Boston marathoners endured pretty miserable weather conditions, there was another marathon. This one was held near the north pole. Not many fans cheering on the runners. Well, with the exception of a few polar bears and arctic foxes.

While we’ve been stuck in cool to cold mode for a while, northwestern Europe has been basking in the sun and warm temperatures for the past couple of weeks. Mostly in the 60s, but 70s and even some 80s are expected later this week. And this is a consistent pattern of reasonable to really nice weather every day. I guess one could say that we’re also in a consistent pattern! But not one that is nice by any stretch of the imagination. April is often truly glorious in the Netherlands. I remember it fondly. Biking through the tulip fields; hardly any wind; birds and animals seemingly really enjoying themselves (not like the birds here who seem to be swearing more than singing these days). If I had more money I’d live there from March to June. By June we usually flip the summer switch and they regress. Not that it gets cold, but it’s usually not very warm (frequently in the 60s), the light rains often return, and it generally does not feel summer-like.

On sports I have a couple of tidbits to offer:

Maple Leafs are a good team with an excellent coach. The series will be a tough one for the Bruins. I think it goes to 7 games.

Celtics won’t get past the Bucks. Not their fault. They’re basically playing their B-squad against other teams’ A-teams.

Red Sox face real competition this week. They’ve looked good so far, but don’t be surprised if they return to earth. I think the Yankees need to add a pitcher or two in order to win the division. They’re in a good position to add pitching, given their payroll and farm depth. This means the AL East will likely be a dog fight.

The Pats’ off-season soap opera has turned me off.

    1. Probably go 7 no surprise there but bruins won’t loose this series in there barn for game 7 . Notice I said this series I’ll review one series at a time . I fully expected the leafs to be on fire last night after getting clobbered in Boston .

    2. Great stuff! Generally agree regarding the sports points but I say B’s in 6, not 7. πŸ˜‰

        1. I say Celtics will “struggle” in 7 but will certainly not get past the next round. Wait til next year for EC finals, etc.

  4. I agree with you on the Red Sox. They beat up on the soft teams on the schedule and only played one potential playoff team in the Yankees and beat them two out of three. If the Yankees need to add anything to get over the hump they will do so at the trade deadline. The Yankees got assets to make deals and let’s face it anything less than a World Series with this team this season is a failure.

  5. Euro keeps the Thursday/Thursday Night system More South of us than does
the GFS and the NAMS. Waiting on a few more frames.

    1. Snow, if any, will have to be on the back end as 925 and 850 mb temps too mild
      for snow initially.

      1. Ok, 12Z runs shows even less snow than 0Z run. About 1/2 inch at best. All Logan needs is a tenth. Perhaps, just maybe??? But still
looks interesting. Will there be a surprise? I dunno. Something
        to watch anyway.

  6. 1/2 inch will do it to get Boston over the 60 inch mark. 12z NAM shows enough to get over the 60 inch mark.

  7. 16th anniversary today of the super back-door cold front (4-17-2002).

93 to 57 here in 10 minutes late in the afternoon.

  8. It “appears” that the 18Z NAM wants to bring the Thursday System a little more South that the 12Z run. What this translates into possible snow? I dunno. Please stay tuned.

      1. Yup, and at least for a time Thursday evening, the NAM looks
to do just that, except that it is saying NO!

    1. Hmmm From Hour 48 onward, the NAM surface temps are in the 30s, 925 and 850 mb temps are well below freezing, yet NAM is depicting RAIN and not SNOW. I think we get a changeover and at least a minor accumulation.
I am only looking for 2 tenths of an inch accumulation. GEEZ, can we please
get that. This Spring sucks so badly, I want Logan to at least come in at
60 inches Plus on the year.

  9. Mid winter conditions and fresh powder today / April 17th up at Sugarbush, VT…

    https://twitter.com/Sugarbush_VT/status/986297908411682816

Jay Peak has also picked up fresh snow and has 100% of their terrain open.

I did see that despite the incredible late season snow depth up at Stowe (Mt Mansfield stake still has a depth of 86″), Stowe has closed for the season. Smuggs, Mad River and Stratton have also closed. It’s not for lack of snow cover, just doesn’t pay to stay open this late in the season as people don’t have skiing on their minds anymore. I’d love to get another day in, but probably not going to happen looking at my schedule.

  10. Green Bay I saw has had 37.1 inches of snow this month which is a record for April Previous record was 15.1 inches of snow

  11. TK does have a great memory for weather-related events. Mine is pretty good, but not at his level. I do remember news and political events from almost every day/week of every year going back to the 1980s. This is a rather weird, freakish memory thing. Too bad it’s not remunerative. In my older years I am losing this ability slowly but surely.

    1. I have found recently that my short term memory, after having worsened slightly when I was in my 40s, has improved since I turned 50. Bizarro. Long term memory is 100% of what it’s always been.

        1. Not sure why certain things just stay with me. Sometimes it’s correlated to something else I was doing as well.

    1. I think a lot of that stays stuck in the hills then dries up. The atmosphere tries to do it.

  12. Barbara Bush passed away. My heart aches. She was a lovely, lovely lady in every sense of the word. She was elegance and grace.

        1. She lived to be the same age my dad was when he passed away. Loved her. She was wonderful in so many ways. And nobody could bridge the gap between older and younger generations the way she did at the time.

          1. She was a strong woman who stood quietly yet fiercely by her family…contradictory but absolute truth. My mom met the bushes a couple of times…both because she actively supported them and campaigned for them and also because they were close friends of Ted Williams. Mrs Bush was among the last of the gracious. My heart aches tonight

  13. Really interested to see what the Red Sox do against the Angels.
Yankees getting demolished by the lowly Marlins.

        1. Let’s not get carried away. I don’t ever recall a west coast sweep, maybe 4 or 5 of 6 at best. Those trips are hard even under the best of circumstances.

  14. Yea, the Red Sox have only beat up on weak teams so far.
    Hahahaha

    How’s that working out.

    9-1 Marlins. Bwhahahaha

  15. Good morning.

Not looking so great for snow tomorrow/tomorrow night for Boston.
Could this be the last hurrah? Who knows. Let us hope so.

    Re: Sox
Mookie is dialed in and set for monster season.
Team looks great and the starting pitching era is minuscule. Amazing. I’d like them to keep this pace up. Not likely, but wow if they did.

    RE:Celtics
Really don’t follow basketball, but good for them. Amazing that they are missing their 2 best players and still can go out and win 2 play off games.

    RE:Bruins
They win the series IF they win tonight. IF not, it’s going 7 and outcome is in doubt. yeah I know I had said 6 but they must win tonight to do so in 6.

  16. I thought I came far enough south to avoid the dreaded “backdoor cold front”. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

One has currently sagged far enough south to lie between Kitty Hawk and Cape Hatteras. We have a light NE wind, while Cape Hatteras has a SW wind.

The storm that is supposed to give New England cold rain and a bit of wet snow tomorrow is supposed to give us SW winds later today and a much warmer afternoon than yesterday.

Tuesday (yesterday), in spite of sunshine and a 65 degree sun angle, the afternoon temp was 53F and it was windy. That was an impressive cold airmass for mid April. Average high here in mid April is 68F.
