Thursday Forecast

7:13AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 19-23)
Low pressure will track just south of southern New England today and tonight then become absorbed by a larger low pressure circulation over the western Atlantic Friday as high pressure situates itself over the eastern Great Lakes. This will deliver some wet weather to the region today which may fall as sleet and/or snow in parts of the region at times especially this morning under heaviest areas and in higher elevations, then the steadiest is gone by afternoon and only intermittent light rain/mix showers are possible through tonight and a few lingering into Friday. Dry weather follows this weekend but with high pressure centered to the northwest of New England a cool northerly air flow will prevail. By Monday the high pressure area will build over the region with a bright and pleasant day. Forecast details…
TODAY: Cloudy with rain and areas of sleet and wet snow this morning with minor temporary accumulation possible on unpaved surfaces where frozen precipitation occurs, then intermittent mainly rain showers this afternoon. Highs 37-45. Wind NE 5-15 MPH with higher gusts especially near the coast, shifting to N later.
TONIGHT: Cloudy with a few rain/mix showers possible. Lows 33-39. Wind N 10-20 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with passing rain/mix showers. Highs 42-48. Wind N 10-20 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 32-38. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 48-54. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 50s.
MONDAY: Sunny. Lows from the upper 30s to lower 40s. Highs from the middle 50s to lower 60s but turning cooler in coastal areas.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 24-28)
Going to lean toward a sooner arrival of low pressure from the southwest with a chance of rain by late April 24 into early April 25. A second system may bring additional unsettled weather later April 26 into April 27 with drier weather returning to end the period. Temperatures a little closer to normal during this period overall.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 29-MAY 3)
Fair, briefly cooler then milder April 29-30 before a risk of unsettled weather to start the month of May.

    1. Back & forth here. People, as usual, will freak out again, unnecessarily. It’ll melt on its own if it even coats anything. Accumulation will be non-uniform in location and brief. We have nice days ahead.

  1. I can’t even count how many people I’ve heard say “were gettin’ three inches of snow today…..”

    1. Weather seems to be the topic that I hear when out and about. Although, I’m not sure that is new. It is an easy topic to use as a jumping start for a conversation when you come across someone you have not seen for a bit or even the cashier where you are checking out. Lots of grumbling is attached to the conversation though due to cooler weather.

I was at the monthly Dana Farber group grief meeting last night. I was surprised not one person knew there might be a bit of snow or ice. I was thrilled that two beside me were excited about the possibility….even just a bit. I wonder if that is an indication of where folks focus is.

  2. It must be Connecticut birthday week!!!

If I’m not mistaken, it is your birthday, Mark. I hope you have a wonderful day and special year to follow.

  3. Opened my car this morning in JP to find a coating of snow on the roof, rear window and windshield. Light coating on grassy areas. Driving to work it was a mix from mostly rain to mostly snow. Here at the office it is a mix. Sometimes 50-50 and sometimes about 80% snow. At the moment 50-50 or even 30 or 40% snow.

April 19th. Pretty cool. Close, but no cigar for Logan getting that needed 10th.
I was hoping, but not the case unless the heavens open up within the next
    hour or so. 😀

    Now about 75% snow.

  4. Happy Birthday Mark.
I hope will be seeing you here on the blog in the summer months when will be watching thunderstorms and hopefully will be seeing better baseball from the Yankees into the near future.

  5. Thanks all for the birthday wishes! Skiing at Mount Snow today. We virtually have the whole mountain to ourselves! Looks like the dead of winter here.

    1. I’d have to travel to Chile in South America to ski on my Birthday or Perhaps
the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia.

      1. I’m not a fan of how it’s handling the pattern really.

Ironically, I have a feeling the ICON may actually be the best model today.

          1. It’s just doing the wrong thing with the jet stream. I think it’s burying things too deep in the South for one thing.

  6. Interesting 24 to 30 hrs of temp swings here in northern Outer Banks ….

Back door front in northern Outer Banks held temps to the 50s yesterday with an east wind.

The storm that brought you rain and wet snow today, sent its warm front through about 9pm last night. Temps immediately rose into the mid 60s and spent all night around 65F.

Woke up to a SW wind. Temps zoomed to 75F by 10am. At that point, in a 30 minute period, we watched the waves change direction on the sound every 5 to 10 minutes, as the wind went from SW to W to NW to N to NE. Once the wind got to NE, the temp fell to the upper 50s.

The wind then eventually ended up ESE and the temp rebounded to low 60s and there was development of beautiful low top cumulus clouds.

Even in a colder than normal pattern, we have thankfully experienced spring weather and have enjoyed the warmth of the very, very strong spring sun.

  7. Today marked the warmest April 19th on record (records go back about 300 years) in the Netherlands. Several locales reported 30C, or 86F.

Happy birthday, Mark. Looks like you and your family got in some nice mid-winter skiing.

I’ve been wishing people Happy Holidays as it looks and feels like late November. Especially today.

Did Boston even get out of the 30s today? Sure didn’t feel like it. I felt like crap all day (dreaded GERD), but ran nonetheless (tends to help a little) in the cold rain and snow this morning, and then again this afternoon in the cold rain. There are some blossoms on some of the trees in the Esplanade, but they look really sad. Canadian geese were congregating in large numbers near the hatch shell. I overheard their conversation about getting the heck out of here.

    1. It was about that in London as well. What a day. The marathon is Sunday so hopefully it cools down.

  8. My thermometer says it’s 42.5F (Boston – Back Bay). Sure doesn’t feel like it. Raw, damp.

Well, maybe not this year. The way things are going there will be some snow in Tuckerman’s Ravine right through the summer. That has happened before, but I think there may be more this year than in years past. The outlook in the Presidential Range calls for more snow in May. Not as much as April, but still colder than normal and snowier than normal.

  10. I been so busy the last few weeks, have not commented for several reasons but I had time today…
Mark Happy Birthday and happy belated Birthday to you as well Jimmy.

Interesting scene this morning as my new kitten was watching the snow out the big picture window trying to attack the snowflakes.

I been talking to some grad professors about possible thesis /dissertation research that I could do and most have relations of atmospheric science. I am totally geeking out lol.
I am taking a year off though so i can get some experience in the work force of the field. Hoping for a couple of the jobs I applied to in particular but won’t say them until I get an answer. tuition and fees covered and its as if your at a job. All your personal money/ grants fellowships etc goes directly to your research.

I been looking all over the place for college I was originally thinking of staying in the country because I thought going abroad would be to expensive, turns out, its cheap, you finish sooner, No stress about standardized testing and is based on recomendations and your GPA ( all good for me lol), and its all research based. Compare that to the USA college system, Expensive, filled with dept, usually takes 5 or more years and standardize testing that does not show what you really know as they try to play games. Fellowships, scholarships, RA’s and TA’s to help cover everything involved.

Its why I am thinking of going abroad, particularly Australia and Sweden. I suggest anyone that has someone looking at college (particularly grad school to stay on the east coast or go abroad.)

been looking at places in Virginia, North and South Carolina, Florida, Cali, Sweden, England and Australia, ( which is cool because it takes much less time to get that Phd/Masters, also its more research base)

    1. I’ve known a few people that have studied abroad and they all found it a rather positive experience. Whatever you end up doing I’m sure will be right for you!

      1. Neither really. But we still have to see if that pattern actually evolves first anyway.

  11. Matt, Sweden would be a great choice, as would the Netherlands and the UK. Excellent science/engineering/environment programs in all three countries. Most if not all classes are in English in Sweden and the Netherlands. Textbooks are all in English. Many of the instructors and professors are from other European and Asian countries.

Sweden is very dark during the winter. I mean, 3pm to 10am dark. And when it is `light’ it’s usually overcast and gray. So, be prepared. The cafe/bar scene is lively and that usually helps people through the winter.

    1. I second Joshua’s comments. And know Mac would as well. Most of all, Matt, I know that whatever your decision, you will be a tremendous success.

    1. Wonderful voice. Sad news.

I love radio. There’s something about listening to a game on the radio. We’re very blessed in this town to have had (and currently have) truly great radio announcers and commentators. Gil was one of them.

      1. I would be curious as to who those radio announcers we have currently working today that are so “great”.
