Saturday Forecast

11:27AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 18-22)
One more thunderstorm day for parts of the region as a cold front moves through from northwest to southeast. After a few scattered showers preceding it, we’ll see a scattered to broken line of showers/storms forming late morning from eastern NY across southern VT and NH then progressing southeastward across the region during the course of the day, finally reaching the South Coast by this evening. Not everybody is going to get hit with a storm, but those that day can see a potent one with downpours and a period of intense lightning, including some wind gusts. The front is even going to really get that far offshore of the South Coast so there will be additional threat for showers near there through Monday, and then the front comes back Tuesday as a warm front with more unsettled weather. We get into the warm sector for a while Wednesday with higher humidity again and a cold front then approaches bringing a threat of showers/thunderstorms all over again. But it is too far away to know any details on timing, coverage, strength, etc. so the usual fine-tuning will take place going forward. Forecast details…
TODAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers/thunderstorms forming northern areas midday through early afternoon then scattered to numerous showers/thunderstorms progressing southeastward through the remainder of the day. Any storms can be strong. Humid. Highs 75-84, coolest in coastal areas. Wind W 5-15 MPH, possibly gusty and variable around any storms.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers possible favoring the South Coast. Lows 60-67. Wind light N.
SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers possible favoring the South Coast. Highs 70-77. Wind light NE.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers possible favoring the South Coast. Lows 60-67. Wind light NE.
MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers possible favoring the South Coast. Highs 70-77. Wind light NE.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers possible, especially later in the day. Lows from the middle 50s to lower 60s. Highs in the 70s.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers early. Chance of showers/thunderstorms late. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s except 70s some coastal areas.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 23-27)
Drier but warm August 23. Shower risk with increasing humidity August 24. Warm to hot and humid August 25-27 with isolated showers/thunderstorms as the Bermuda High regains control.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 28-SEPTEMBER 1)
This period looks warm to hot and fairly humid with occasional opportunities for showers and thunderstorms, though limited.

  1. Thank you!! Really beginning to notice the much shorter days. Starting to feel like fall is around the corner.

    1. Pretty much the same way it works every year. ๐Ÿ™‚ And I most certainly know what you mean by “shorter days”.

  2. Thank you TK.

Given how ominous the radar looked last night in Eastern NY and western CT, we ended up with a fairly benign rainfall total of only 0.25″ here in Coventry, CT yesterday. Had some late night thunder and lightning but those storms really fizzled as they approached the CT River Valley. We will see what this next line of storms approaching has to offer.

  3. Tomorrow, we are heading to the Bahamas for the next 6 days. Took a risk booking the trip in peak hurricane season but fortunately the tropics are pretty dead so far this year.

TK, any thoughts on the weather in Nassau for the upcoming week? Typical pop up PM showers and storms?

    1. Looks about as typical as it ever can be there. Daily risk of pop up passing shower or storm, maybe a couple.

  4. SPC has placed portions of SNE in marginal risk.
Mark I was up in Coventry last Friday and went to Cassidy Hill Vineyards. What a nice winery it is.

    1. Nice! That is right around the corner from me. You may have even driven past my house if you came in from Rte 44. Nice winery and they have a good Friday night concert series where they have bands come in play. They get a really large crowd for that.

  5. It certainly appears that Canadian highs won’t be pestering us the rest of the summer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. You know how I know its heading towards the end of summer, My pool is cooler than it was 2 weeks ago by about 10 degrees.

  7. I heard yesterday on the CBS Evening News that with SST’s in the Pacific continuing to rise, there may be a great increase of hurricanes for California. The last one struck San Diego in 1858.

  8. Its starting to rain where I am. Just saw a flash of lightning. This ahead of line that looks to be forming.

    1. It looks as if you have a little cell east of you. There are a couple of warned areas north of you. Seems they are getting their act together

  9. Vicki there is a severe thunderstorm warning for the northern parts of Litchfield County until 3:15. Heavy rain and wind gusts to 60 mph with that storm. It poured here for a while flash of lightning and now sun is back out again.

    1. That area to your west may hold together until it reaches you. There is one area over Springfield ….with a flood warning….that seems to be on a straight line for here. We shall see

      1. Flash Flood Warning for the area you mentioned until 5:15pm today. You could see this line start to form to the west over the Hudson River Valley of NY. No warnings yet in that area.

        1. No warnings yet but it seems that the t storm warning is moving with the cell just along the MA CT border.

  10. I think my area will be in no man’s land with storms passing to the north
and others to the south with ZILCH here. We shall see.

  11. I am wondering if anyone on here has applied to the NSF graduate research fellowship programs, trying to apply myself, and any example of proposals accepted or not will be helpful. I have 2 examples, would like to see a few more to get a general feel of what they want.

  12. It is really sad that I saw it was raining here on radar before I looked out the window.

Itโ€™s pouring. But I think short lived

      1. One tenth of an inch in a blink.

Sad part is it was so fast I may not have seen it if I hadnโ€™t looked at the radar. Iโ€™m between a window and slider but watching sleepless in Seattle ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Thank you JRW. Just kisses my west border. But Iโ€™ve been hearing the thunder for a bit and the warning has been traveling with the cell so I would say it has a good chance of being extended east.

Sewing some flashes as I type. Time to go my window perch ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Severe Thunderstorm goes until 3:45 for your area. That part of MA seems to be a magnet for severe weather in summer 2018.

    1. Not warned for me yet. But may be soon. Worst of that cell may go just north of my location. Thunder is deep and rumbly

  14. Of course. NOTHING here……………………(@#&!@*&#!&@#*(^!@#^&*!@%^#&!^@#^!@#!@(*#^(!*@^#*!^@#*^!@*

  15. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

What a great thunderstorm day!!! NOT! Well, not here.

      1. Yikes…..that is not a good place to be. Hopefully, fair personnel were smart enough to get people out prior to its arrival

        1. They do a good job there. With that said, I’m guessing folks were on their own to judge the sky and make choices to take cover. As I type, sharp, close by, loud crack of thunder.

    1. Well, you never get action, so enjoy!

BORING!!!!!!! here. BORING!!!!! And disgustingly SOUPY!
I can’t stand it any more. It feels like we are swimming in the house.

  16. It looks like the hump back echo extending to the North will hold together
and deliver some rain. Lightning looks doubtful as there is none showing in
those echos at the moment. All significant action is to the South.

  17. JpDave …..

N wind at Logan, NE in Portland.

You should definitely see the air cool off soon …..

    Humidity wise, slower drop

Air, I think will transition from sultry to still damp, but perhaps even almost chilly by tomorrow.

I still think getting the dp under 60F near the coast is going to be hard.

    Water is too warm.

    1. Temp here is 76. Dew point is all the way down to a “comfy” 68. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Iโ€™m no longer jealous. Iโ€™m hearing a House was hit by lightning and lots of branches down. I should have known the Mac factor was at play when we were rhe only part of Sutton not in the warning box

  18. The post-frontal air mass here in Albany is certainly refreshing. Temp 74/DP 62 with a 10-15mph wind is actually making it feel a tad cool, certainly more fall-like than anything I’ve felt in awhile.

Summer is not done with us yet though. The 7-14+ day from now period looks very warm. Maybe not quite as humid as recent times, but more hot. The trough to the west which has helped pump in the humidity lately looks to be replaced by more of an all-out heat dome over the eastern US and western Atlantic. That should cut back on the humidity and the t-storm threat and instead just leave us hot and dry. May last into a good chunk of early September as well. So don’t get too used to the relatively cooler air of the coming few days ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Due east of framingham. Temp dropped 14 degrees in about 1.5hours. Most at the end of that period. DP still 69

  19. We had sun early in morning then variable clouds and then just cloudy with sprinkles and then off and on dark skies. Sometime after 3:00 or so we started getting some thunder with moderate rain and at one point pea sized hail. Now it is dark with light rain and a little thunder. Lights keep flickering – no big storms around here that I know of. I will say that yesterday I was in Natick visiting a friend around 5:00 and the sky looked so weird and pretty – big, puffy, pink clouds and on and off showers. Some raindrops were really big. I still have a flip phone but it takes lousy pictures. Until we find a smartphone that is right for us we have to depend on my husband’s Nikon digital camera.

    1. Nikons are great. I have been thinking of you often this past week. The sky has been amazing every day. Right now, here, it is layered and seeming to want to move on to the next stage ….at least for a few days

      1. I know! If I was younger I know I would have loved this summer. Heat and humidity. But now that I am older, this humidity is too much. It’s been going on so long. For those who love the heat and humidity, that’s ok. For those who can’t deal with it, it’s lousy. But one thing this summer has presented has been beautiful skies – different every day. Last wk. we had a “lovely” crop of mushrooms in our backyard. Yuckk. But even they disappeared with all the moisture. I may try to get husband to get some pictures of the sky before summer is over and will try to post.

        1. I think I have mushrooms growing on my living room rug.

It has been interesting and Iโ€™m thinking it is not the last.

  20. Ok, I am scared shitless …..

Now at pembroke high where lightning is fierce and close by. Pretty sure a bolt missed the car by yards. I swear I saw the line of the bolt in front of me.

Before that, on the pembroke/marshfield line, rain like you’ve never seen or want to see. Couldn’t have been more than 1/10 mile visibility. Road flooding everywhere.

Now for the return trip home …..

  21. Stay safe Tom.
I am remember seeing the line of a bolt of lightning in front of me when I was in Typhoon Lagoon in Florida taking shelter. The bolt I swear hit the wave pool.

  22. My AccuRite rain gauge reads 3.15″. Not sure if that is 100% accurate, but I agree with Tom and SSK, it was intense rain between 4:15-4:45 here in Taunton.

  23. I had to empty water out of my pool, it gained an inch and a half in water level the past few days, must of had at least 2 inches of rain here.

  24. Ok, the return trip had less intense weather, but I hit a curb, the right front tire popped and I had to be helped by AAA. 2 hours of my life I don’t need back ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Beautiful 30 hours on Nantucket. Biked 30 miles. Saw a lot. It was incredibly humid. I mean to the point where I heard islanders complaining about it. The stickiness is pervasive. I had a hard time putting my shirt on, socks, pants. I was at Sconset beach this morning and it was of course warm and humid. But, my guess is that Sconset historically has the least amount of snowfall of any locale in Massachusetts, and is the `coolest’ locale in summer. Hence the spread in temperature is the smallest. It’s the farthest point to the east on the island, and hence is `closest’ to the Gulf stream.

  26. 18z GFS advertising an 8 day heatwave (90+) starting next Sunday, including a couple days at or near 100. Now we know those 2m temps on the GFS are overdone in hot weather events, so I certainly don’t expect any 100s nor an unbroken 8 straight days of 90+. However, the signal is clear for a return to deep summer heat for the end of the month. Gotta figure this year is going to rank way up there for warmest meteorological and astronomical summers on record in our region. May was very warm as well so probably a near record warmest May-August. June was the somewhat cooler month.

  27. For those starting school last week of August this is not what you want. I remember last year here when school started highs in the 70s.

  28. Many start school during that period. My opinion is this will continue. I know younger folks recall starting school in warmer weather. We all had new, warmer, fall clothes Halloween required room for jackets under costumes and often hats and gloves

  29. One thing I noticed and this did not happen when I was a school when it got really warm is some school districts having early dismissal the last couple years.

  30. I love this blog. I was emailed the link. I love weather. Never realized how many look forward to BAD weather . I just wanted to post it.

    1. Think about your comment. This is a weather blog. People look forward to weather. Iโ€™m assuming that is easily understood. No??

      1. โ€˜Noโ€™. Not even if I donโ€™t have any control over it. I understand that whether I root for deadly weather or not, itโ€™s the weather. However I root for ca weather.

        1. Irony. You accidentally typed “ca” which can mean California. They usually have fairly calm weather, but the fires and earthquakes can be a bit of an issue. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I bet the fire and earthquake enthusiasts root for them every day! If you move there you can tell them all about it on one of the local blogs. ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. Parts of the South Coast were pounded. Lots of lightning and local flooding. Friend had a very close lightning hit with power out several hours now.

  32. A waterspout was reported near the Hog Island Channel in the Bourne area. This is from the NWS/BOX storm reports:

  33. It looks like this week looks to be rather cool, with maybe a day or so around normal, Tomorrow and Monday look down right chilly for the middle of August. Like Tk said heat and humidity look to come back, but then there are signs for a massive cool down by the middle of September.

      1. It will probably be very brief. Predominant pattern from next week through most of September will be trough West, ridge East.

          1. Sometimes they aren’t. But if your mean trough is out West and ridge East, then… ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Good morning.

temp 70 with dp 59. Compared to what we have been experiencing, this does
    seem rather refreshing. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

    1. I brought it back from SF, but it arrived a little late :). Beautiful weather in that area last weekend.

      1. Hehe. It is absolutely on time. Remember a few weeks ago when TK wisely gave this time frame for a bit of cooler weather?

I said it would arrive August 19. Macs birthday. We have to always remember the Mac factor

  35. Ever notice that cats, when they catch something, tend to toy with it for a while before finally pouncing? Funny stuff…….

Updating the blog soon but it may not be posted until after 10AM due to errands with mom. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Do you mean sort of like luring a moth to the flame?

Take your time. It is a lovely Sunday morning. Please say hi to your mom. And as I type, Iโ€™m thinking McDonalds breakfast. I havenโ€™t had one in well over a year.

      1. McD’s, obviously fast food, not that high on the “good for you list” but there is nothing wrong with a good FF breakfast now and then. The McD’s I go to does a great job with their breakfast stuff. I don’t get the food often, maybe once every 6 weeks I’ll get a “brunch” there. Most weeks it’s just a coffee for me, coffee and sandwich for mom. ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. TK, I have a cat and what you describe is precisely her behavior. Unfortunately, it’s sometime cruel. Through our lens, our human perspective, cats appear to be torturing their `prey’ (a mouse or a bird) once it’s wounded.

Tom, Keith, Sue, and others living on the South Shore, I realized last night how poorly lit Route 3 is. Obviously, I don’t drive it a lot, nor Route 6, so I can’t anticipate the curves or bends in the road, and don’t have a feel for where I am (unlike on, say, I-95 or I-90). Plus, my night vision is not good. But, I must say both roads are terribly lit. Actually, that’s an understatement. For long stretches it’s like North Korea – there are no lights at all, except from cars. Really disconcerting and dangerous, and something that can be addressed cost-effectively.

    1. You are right, route 3 is hardly lit at all. But I never really noticed it until you mentioned. Apparently you do get used to it after driving it for years.

    2. have to say, though why the need for all the lights there when up in the MTNs thats exactly what the roads look like, No lights, There are not that many accidents up there, even when there is alot of road traffic.

      1. The issue would be traffic volume more than anything. They are also better about lighting these days, LED’s and more downward light than that wasted light shooting out to the sides and up.

    3. I don’t frequent it, but I have been down there enough at night to know it’s not lit well at all. Hopefully they can address that not long from now.

    4. We all noticed that when we moved here. No highway lights on highways took a while to get used too. We still arenโ€™t used to it.

  37. Very strange feeling today. I actually feel cold as I sit and type next to an open window.
No, I am NOT going to close it. Let the cool air in!!!!
And no, I am not complaining, just reporting. ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Yes, I am aware of that. And you are correct, I will NOT like it.
This has been the worst summer ever for my poor wife.
It has absolutely put here away.

This week’s reprieve will help for sure. I haven’t the heart
to tell here we’ll be back in shit city again soon.

        1. Just let her enjoy this for now. One positive thing (which WxWatcher mentioned) is that the next hot pattern may be without as much humidity as we have had in this recent stretch. Not saying it can’t get humid, but we may have fewer days near or in the oppressive range.

          1. The only good thing I can say about late
season heat is the SHORTER DAYS!!!
Not that it offers all that much when it is so hot.

  38. Updating now…

We’ll be one fewer on the next blog post and going forward. One who thought they had me fooled, but the entire time the joke was on them. Refer to the cat comment for more. And to the silent accomplice(s)… ๐Ÿ˜‰

To quote my mother when getting rid of something not needed or wanted: “…and it’s ‘Goodbye Charlie!'”

    1. Ever notice that cats, when they catch something, tend to toy with it for a while before finally pouncing? Funny stuffโ€ฆโ€ฆ.

HA HA HA HA HA Good one TK. WELL PLAYED!!!
