Sunday Forecast

11:29AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 19-23)
A reprieve has been granted by Mother Nature. A few days of somewhat cooler and less humid weather begins today and lasts through Tuesday. Humidity makes a brief return Wednesday before a front again pushes it out again. Going to spare a long synoptic discussion today in the interest of time and that I’m late with this update, so onto the forecast details…
TODAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy with clouds most dominant in southeastern MA and RI/eastern CT where a few showers are also possible. Less humid. Highs 70-78, coolest coast. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH, gusts to around 20 MPH in elevated and coastal areas.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 57-64. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Slight risk of a South Coast shower. Highs 68-76, coolest coastal areas. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 57-64. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers especially late day and favoring areas south and west of Boston. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely at night. Highs 70-78. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Humid. Scattered to numerous showers/thunderstorms favoring the morning hours. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the upper 70s to middle 80s.
THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Less humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the upper 70s to lower 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 24-28)
During this period a transition back to a hotter pattern will take place as high pressure ridges from the Midwest and the eastern Atlantic merge. Though we will see more humidity again, at the moment it doesn’t look like it will be as oppressive as recent days have been. Showers cannot be ruled out at the start of this transition around August 24, then thunderstorms may occur as a trough gets into the area August 26. Other days should see limited or no activity.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 29-SEPTEMBER 2)
Current indications are for a hot end of August and start of September, with limited shower and thunderstorm opportunities as high pressure dominates.

      1. Read perfectly fine to me. And I for an o is they fault of the keyboard and not you ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Thanks, TK…Hope you’re feeling better

    Dare I say it…it’s a little chilly!
Clouds hanging tough here with a stiff breeze.
I guess we did have 3.15″ of rain yesterday. I saw another report from Taunton with 3.01″!
Instead of hovering around the feeder, the hummingbirds have to hold on to eat this morning as they are buffeted by the wind!
Thanks for sharing that article about the late 19th century waterspout, Vicki. I love that style of writing! I kept expecting the Bloomer Girls to appear on Monument Beach!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I was finishing my hurricane prep 27 years ago at this hour as we waited on Bob’s arrival.

Enjoy the day, everyone! Go Sox!

    1. Iโ€™m glad you enjoyed the article. I got a huge kick out of it too.

Good heavens. 27 years. Sure doesnโ€™t seem that long.

      Have an awesome day, Captain

  2. Thank you, TK

If I may…and you know that means I will ๐Ÿ˜‰ …..several weeks ago TK in his wisdom gave this period a chance of being cooler. I was adamant…..something I rarely am…..that the exact date would be August 19, Macs birthday. Even now he makes me smile

This song is not weather related but special and I hope makes everyone smile

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=awzNHuGqoMc

    1. I don’t remember the date range I had said but it definitely included Mac’s day. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. It was narrow ….which speaks to your expertise. As soon as I saw todayโ€™s date, I knew. ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. In that case, somewhere in southern New England hits 100 between August 25 and September 10. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Thank you for the forecast, TK.

Warmest day of the year in Alert, Nunavut. It’s currently 54F. That’s anomalous warmth. But, the cool down begins in earnest tonight as it dips below freezing and looks to stay that way through the middle of June 2019. In fact, snow IS in the forecast for Tuesday and Thursday … in Alert. Maybe Snow can join an Inuit blog. I hear Eskimo’s have many different words for snow. He can pick one for his handle, and if that doesn’t work and they figure him out, pick another, and another, and another.

  4. Regarding the McDonald’s discussion from the previous blog, I would like to say that I don’t like the pattie conversion from frozen to fresh. The meat has a strange taste now. For protein I may just go with the chicken nuggets from now on. Too bad though as I was really looking forward to the fresh parties. Oh well. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Iโ€™ll eat their nuggets occasionally. I love rhe mustard sauce dip.

Not much else. I do like their pancakes and their biscuits.

      1. The chicken nuggets now have pure white meat and I can tell the difference, in a good way. I am curious though, what were they made from before? Hmmm. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Just laughed out loud in the Fort Lauderdale airport. I thought Snowโ€™s posts seemed a little fishy….the talk about Texas, complaining about highways, the Iโ€™m 61 years old today and 64 yesterday…..

Perhaps in the next Charlie reincarnation, heโ€™ll be a bit more careful ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Thanks TK.

Big time laugh at the whack-a-Charlie today. Like we couldn’t tell what the deal with “snow” was. Love it ๐Ÿ™‚

And yes, it is beautiful out there!

  7. Now for an AccuWeather trivia Quiz I don’t get.

What is the approximate smallest size of weather phenomena the short range models can see to make a forecast?

    A. 500 yards
    B. 1 mile
    C. 2 miles
    D. 5 miles

    Answer (I think) later today.

    1. My guess is C 2 miles. Why?

Well the highest resolution model I could find was
the 3KM NAM. 3KM = 1.86 mi approximately. Close enough.

If there is some model we don’t have access to, then all bets are off.

  8. AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What city has the world record for the most rainfall in a year?

    A. Mt. Walaleale, Hawaii
    B. Lawrence MA
    C. Tutendo, Colombia
    D. Cherrapunji, India

    Answer later today.

    1. It’s definitely not B, but B probably has the record high low temp and record high high temp all set in the last couple years for every day of the calendar year. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  9. I thought it was rather strange for an obvious snow/cold hater to have a nickname of “Snow”. I didn’t suspect it was Charlie though but I did have a bad feeling he/she was going to be another possible troll in the making. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Sorry Charlie! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. JPD or Scott77…how often do you change your batteries in the AccuRite?

Either the dashboard unit or the actual unit?

    1. Have not touched them. It has been 2 years.
Good question. I guess I’ll change them when the display stops working. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Wonderful. I get occasional emails saying AccuRite has not received a signal in a couple of hours. I notice if I just pick up the transmitter and put it down that all is fine. I am positive something in the house is interfering with the signal but cannot figure what. That eliminates the battery anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Thanks TK and I had a funny feeling about that โ€œSnowโ€….Looks like I wasnโ€™t the only one either.

  12. The next thing to keep an eye on. From NWS Boston/Norton
Low CAPE/high shear environment in place ahead of cold front should be favorable for strong or even severe thunderstorms late Tuesday night (after midnight) into Wednesday morning. SPC SREF shows decent probabilities of more than 500 J/kg of MLCAPE and 0-1km helicity of more than 100. Tropical airmass returns as GEFS shows precipitable water values climbing above 2 inches (+2-3 SD) and dewpoints rise back into 70s. 12z NAM/GFS support this thinking and show 30-40kt of 0-6km shear collocated with best instability. Linear convection looks to be favored but typical of these environments, we also need to be concerned with possibility of an isolated, short-lived tornado developing along line due to low LCLs and high 0-500m helicity of over 100.
For now, this is something to be aware of which will be refined in later forecasts.

    1. I don’t see things lining up.
At least the helicity does NOT match with simulated radar echos.|
I don’t think I am buying in at this time. I’ll keep an eye on it, however.

  13. If this pans out it will be the theme of the summer when there is a potential for strong to severe storms nothing widespread but a few towns could get a nasty storm.

  14. Its a nice day for a bike ride. Since the start of August I have gone biking every day but the ones that was an all out rain storm. Today is the first time I did not feel water building up on my skin besides for the usual sweat lol.

  15. Re McDonalds

I used to eat there couple times a week. Lately, itโ€™s been pretty bad. The Big Mac buns are stale.
I do get the breakfast though. Thatโ€™s actuallt pretty good.
Iโ€™ve been going to Cambridge side galleria for lunch a couple times a week. Taco Bell, Panda Chinese orange chicken is good. For fast food burgers, Iโ€™ve pretty much switched to Burger King. I used to do Chipotle once a week, but every time I open the paper, I read about another food poisoning issue, so Iโ€™ve been a little hinky.

    1. Gotta admit I like Taco Bell for my fast food cravings. I haven’t done McDonald’s in years, same for Burger King, Wendy’s and KFC. I do Chipotle once in awhile…my son is addicted to it. Also a couple of times a year I’ll go to 5 Guys.

    2. We agree re stale buns, etc. My oldest took her oldest to Burger King last week and said their burgers are much better than McDonaldโ€™s.

  16. Some of the coolest temps in New England right now are in Southeastern Mass and on the Cape.

  17. Son and his girlfriend camped in southern berkshires last night and said the winds between say 1 am and early morning were fierce. He thought 40-50

  18. Looking a bit at some of the longer range guidance today (weeklies & monthlies). They are of the consensus that our wet pattern’s days are numbered and the trend will be for drier months ahead. One model hinted at a wetter December while another hinter wetter for November through January then a big switch to dry. For temps they were generally in agreement on a milder than average string of months from fall through winter, though it didn’t seem like they were all about mega warmth. One of them was more neutral on temperatures kind of leaning slightly toward the milder side of normal but not as emphatically as the others.

The general idea here is El Nino late autumn and especially winter, as previously stated. Can’t just look at that and say automatically mild winter or be confident on wet/dry, because of the other factors that go into this. But that is a good first layer of a foundation for upcoming longer range forecasts.

  19. A top 10 day. I know we have had a stretch of muggier weather but I bet Iโ€™d someone goes back and counts, he or she will find many top 10s as well. That said….for those who struggle, there is absolutely no discounting the difficulty they have had.

    1. Today was invigorating !

It was nice to hear the outdoor nature sounds instead of the hum of the A/C.

  20. Not to beat he fast food horse.

But, I love 5 Guys. Thereโ€™s one down 146 from me not too far. We eat there about once a month. We love be food. But my god I have to take a second mortgage to feed four of us.
There used to be a mom and pop restaurant here in town over on 122. It was pretty good. Had a soup and salad bar, and a big menu. Guy wanted to retire and the kids didnโ€™t want it so he closed. ๐Ÿ™

    1. I don’t go as often as I’d like as 3 that are “close” to me are all at least 7 miles away…and for us there are better options a heck of lot closer. The best “non franchise” place close to me is Jenna’s Drive In – Weymouth…excellent fast food sometime with some interesting twists.

        1. On a scale of 1-10 I’d rate them a 6 or 7….it’s a little pricey like 5 Guys. The food itself is good.

          1. about what I expect from a burger place. When we went we thought closet to 8 but I also find places drop some

    2. The five guys here is much better than the many of the others. The one in natick uses so much grease that it drips out ldmthe burgers. But then the burgers here are a bit dry….Iโ€™ll take dry over grease. Had you tried the new B Good at the shoppes? Son brought dinner from there tonight and it is consistently good. I like pirates cove burgers better than five guys…but they are not as consistent. I do like pirates for other things. We also just dosoveeex Jubes. Do you go there at all? Thoughts if you do?

      1. B Good is ok…Not quite as tasty as 5 guys but they do have Sweet Potato fries and they are very good.

        1. Hmm. My rating for 5 guys is 5-6. B good here Iโ€™d put closer to 8.5. But they are brand new and trying really hard. Both I think are consistent.

          1. Oh and ewwwww on sweet potato fries. Mac loved them and sweet potato pancakes…again, ewwwww. And there is not a lot I donโ€™t like.

We donโ€™t have a really good fish place out here but that makes sense being so far inland. One of the few things I miss.

  21. Answers to quizzes.

What is the approximate smallest size of weather phenomena the short range models can see to make a forecast?

    A. 500 yards
    B. 1 mile
    C. 2 miles
    D. 5 miles

    The correct answer is C.

What city has the world record for the most rainfall in a year?

    A. Mt. Walaleale, Hawaii
    B. Lawrence MA
    C. Tutendo, Colombia
    D. Cherrapunji, India

    The correct answer is D.

    1. I remember models that were 10x that and more. Low res.

Also, I used to keep very close track of the rainfall in Cherrapunji as part of my forecasting job in the private sector doing agriculture.

  22. I am hoping for a weak to moderate el-nino, Here is a general sense without putting anything else into the equation
    Strong (don’t want)
    http://www.naturalgasintel.com/ext/resources/Daily-GPI/DG3Q2015/Strong-El-Nino–20150713.png?1436820749

    Weak ( do want)

I am hoping for a good winter around here, and when I mean good, I mean a good amount of snow. It might be my last winter in New England for a while if I do not get any of the jobs I applied too.

  23. I second that on wanting a good winter around here. Give me 2-3 good Noreaster’s I will be happy.

    1. well yeah, but would like the same amount as last year or more ๐Ÿ˜› I was not able to enjoy the snow up in ski country as much as I wanted do to college

  24. Boston fell 0.1 from 60 inches for the season. Only two winters this decade Boston has had below normal snowfall 11-12 and 15-16.

  25. Pirates Cove is good. I like the foot longs.
Jubes is good for breakfast. I like Moms over in Uxbridge better, but I havenโ€™t been there in awhile. Pegโ€™s diner on Church Street for breakfast is good. So is Miss Worcester diner on Southbridge street. Post office pub in Grafton is ok.

    1. We used to go to moms a lot when we drove from framingham to visit oldest. Iโ€™ve heard good things about Pegs. I like that Jubes delivers. Iโ€™ll have to try rhe foot Longs. Thanks.

  26. Boston and all other locations globally at its latitude, saw its last 60 degree max angle sun above the horizon today, until next April.

The earth has come 450,000 miles closer to the sun since aphelion on July 6th and is coming closer to the sun by about 17 to 18 thousand miles per day.

  27. Been busy all weekend and just caught up on yesterday and todayโ€™s blog.

Lol on Snow. I knew who that was from day one. You could tell by the writing style and sentence structure.
TK either figured it out from that, or knew the IP address.
Every time he posted I wondered if anybody was going to call him out.
