Wednesday Forecast

7:30AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 17-21)
Today will be a rather nice day by October standards but another cold front is on the way and will bring the coldest air we’ve seen in quite some time for Thursday. A moderation occurs Friday after a very cold morning, one which will end the growing season in a large portion of the region except urban centers and the immediate coast, and another cold front passing through during Saturday will bring another surge of chill for the second half of the weekend. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Isolated rain showers late-day mainly north and west of Boston. Highs 54-63. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated rain showers evening mainly Boston area southward. Slight risk of a passing rain/snow showers southern NH, central and northeastern MA late night. Lows 31-39. Wind SW 10-20 MPH shifting to NW but with gusts of 25-45 MPH expected.
THURSDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 42-49. Wind NW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill from the upper 20s to middle 30s.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-35, coldest interior areas, least cold urban centers and immediate shore. Diminishing NW wind.
FRIDAY: Sunshine and high clouds. Highs 53-60. Wind W to SW 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows from the middle 30s to lower 40s. Highs from the upper 50s to middle 60s.
SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated rain and snow showers. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 22-26)
Fair with moderating temperatures October 22. An early rain shower threat then breezy and cooler October 23 as another front passes. This front may settle just south of the region with a low pressure area on it so will have to watch for nearby unsettled weather at mid period in case it ends up further north. Fair and cool by late in the period in either case.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 27-31)
Continuing to see guidance signals of a possible storm during this period but it remains too early to be certain of this.

  1. Thanks, as always, TK!
Had to find the scrapers for the windshield this morning. 34 at the homestead.

  2. Thank you, TK.

32 when I woke up – no idea what it went down to because I lost signal again on the system – arghhhhhhh.

Frost on the grass and on car windshields.

      1. My fingers gave up on my brain years ago and just seem to happily type whatever they want to type. And the up side is that if someone doesn’t like what I type, I can just smile and legitimately say “talk to the hand.”

  3. Teams that win game 3 of an ALCS go on to win the series 76% of the time. I’m not Tom but those odds seem very good to me. πŸ™‚

  4. I hope the upcoming cold is enough to literally scare the trees into turning color. There is still too much green around for this time of year.

…A BRIEF PERIOD OF 35 TO 45 MPH WIND GUSTS MAY RESULT IN A FEW
DOWNED TREES AND ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES BETWEEN 2 AND 8 PM THIS
    EVENING…

A strong cold front will cross the region this afternoon and
early this evening. A band of scattered showers may accompany
this cold front and result in a brief period of 35 to 45 mph wind
gusts, especially over the higher terrain. Given that we still
have fully leafed trees, the potential exists for a few downed
trees and isolated power outages. The main time of concern is
between 2 and 8 pm this evening.

          1. I expect some gusts strong enough to take down branches, limbs, and possibly weakened trees in a few cases. Power outages, though not widespread, are inevitable.

And it’s not that our wind storms are stronger or more frequent now. It’s that our trees are older and deteriorating.

            1. The contrarian is here. πŸ™‚

You’d think we would have had enough wind, heavy snow, etc to take care of the older trees.

That said, I was going to ask you about that event last week related to Michael. I told you Uxbridge daughter said the wind through there was short lived but as intense as she’d seen in the over decade they have lived there. You’d explained it was typical low level? tropical storm related. I may not have that exactly corect

On my way to my monthly Dana grief group meeting I noticed three houses just past daughters had major limbs split from trees…four in total and in a line with two in one yard and the other two in different yards.

  6. We should be most thankful that we have Nathan Eovaldi.

He started with guns blazing, but quickly came back to earth and struggled for awhile.
Towards the end of the season he regained his form and he has been stellar
during the playoffs having picked up 2 vital wins.

    Thank you Nathan Eovaldi!!!

  7. EURO has a disturbance move in from the northwest sending rain and snow showers, then this meets a disturbance coming from the Gulf states, and bombs out over water and then moves back towards us dumping snow over Maine, NH and VT.
Just for fun here is the EURO snow map. Of course this is a weird set up but its possible.

    1. Requires log in.

My service is a tad slow, But I’ll post some shortly.
Has SNOW to the coast with at least a few inches for boston!

      1. shows 2 to 6 north of the pike 6+ in NH, VT, and Maine. with some up to 17 inches based on this one run, I also never trust a storm that wants to back into the area like that.

  8. The ECMWF is starting to pick up on the storm threat for Oct 24-25 that has been in the 11-15 DAY outlook for a couple days. It should start to fine-tune this. I think we may see 2 events in the period of October 24-30.

  9. JPD: While I am waiting for my son’s soccer practice to finish up, I found out that you are 100% correct about October 9-10 snows in 1979. Blue Hill recorded a total of 6.8″ of snow on those dates.
The high temp on October 10, 1979 was only 36!!!!!
I was in college in the South then and was not here to witness that!

    1. Thanks for the verification. Yes, I do remember those days.
I had a light jacket on and remember being a tad chilly as the snow
was falling, but I didn’t care because I was loving it. πŸ˜€

    1. It got windy around here for about an hour. It blew the pool cover off a bit. Had to go fix whats basically a kite in the wind lol.

  10. On the summit of Mt. Washington wind chill is -12F, sustained winds over 70mph with wind gusts of 86mph. Actual temp is 16F. Yes, autumn is here. I think that’s settled. The cicada’s have flown south along with all migrant birds, many wild animals are foraging for food to beef themselves up for winter, bees and insects are desperately seeking shelter.

  11. One thing I’ve learned in this playoff is that J.D. Martinez is no Manny Ramirez or David Ortiz. He looks lost and overmatched at the plate, as bad as I’ve seen him all year. Not quite as awful as Kinsler (why isn’t Brandon Phillips the back-up at 2nd behind Holt; Kinsler offers nothing). The Red Sox are missing a productive bat in the 3rd spot. Doesn’t bode well for the series going forward. Oh well, at least there will be another game at Fenway. It won’t end tomorrow.

    1. Joshua the Sox are dominating this series . Defense last night was incredible. Something different about this team ( magical if you will.

    2. JD has 8 RBI’s in 8 playoff games this year while batting .275 with 6 walks.

I’ll take that all day in the playoffs.

  12. Cold out there, but manageable.

    Sox-Astros game 4 currently in 6th inning. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Ending at 1pm …. I’m glad I did not stay up for that.
