Transition Nearly Complete

5:26PM

Today was transition day for the Boston area. And upside down day, in which the highest temperatures took place in the late morning to early afternoon hours, showers and thunderstorms popped up, and since then temperatures have fallen and humidity is leaving. You can thank a cold front for this change. It’s sliding offshore now, and after some scattered showers behind it end from west to east later this evening, a clearing sky will follow, temperatures will continue to drop, and by morning it will feel more like October than mid September.

High pressure building into the region behind this departing front is about to bring us several days of very nice weather, starting out quite cool Friday into the weekend before moderating a little by early next week. Saturday may feature some cloudiness as an upper level disturbance moves through from west to east. The next threat of showers comes around the middle of next week, but we won’t worry about that now.

The tropics are quieter, though we still have Hurricane Maria, which is intensifying slightly as it accelerates north to northeast well offshore of the US East Coast. Newfoundland, Canada, may be clipped by this system, hence a Tropical Storm warning and Hurricane Watch for that region.

The forecast for the Boston area…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a few showers to start, ending west to east by 11PM, followed by clearing west to east overnight. Turning much cooler! Low by morning 42-47. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with a few gusts toward 20 MPH which may actually produce a tiny bit of a wind chill if you happen to be outside!

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny – few cumulus clouds. Cool & crisp. High 60-65. Wind NW 10-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear then some high clouds. Chilly. A few patches of frost possible in low lying areas away from Boston and the coast. A layer of ground fog may form in valleys, swamps, and bogs.  Low 39-44 except 44-49 urban centers. Wind diminishing to calm.

SATURDAY: Sun filtered through high clouds. High 61-66. Wind variable shifting from N to SE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variable high clouds. Low 45-50. Wind SE under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny – few fair weather clouds. High 63-68. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 52. High 71.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 52. High 74.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 55. High 77.

THURSDAY: Chance of showers. Low 55. High 66.

  1. I must credit Barry Burbank with the phrase “valleys, swamps, and bogs” – one he uses occasionally and I am quite fond of.

Also, thanks to everybody that voted for this blog in WBZ TV’s contest! I appreciate all the support!

  2. As of 5PM, Bedford is down from an earlier 77 to 66, and Boston’s gone from 81 to 71. Front has gone through, I still have sandals on, my feet are cold, and summer is trying to leave us. But we’re not completely done with warmth yet, mark my words.

    1. I think winners get gift certificates (I don’t remember to where – oops) and “bragging rights”. I prefer to let the blog speak for itself. 🙂

      1. TK, I hope the gift certificate is for something good that you can really enjoy and even share with your family!

Keep up the good work on this blog as always! 🙂

  3. I just hope the newscasters don’t start panicing viewers about this brief cool shot. It seems when a met uses words like “cool”, “cold”, “wind”, “frost”, “freeze”, etc. they get all sad and emotional like all is lost….not to mention the word “snow”.

I always look forward to fall, then winter, but the only issue is that we will have to listen to all the whinning newscasters during the coming months. They really take some the fun out of winter. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was just a few or some who grew up in warm climates, but my beef is that even the ones who grew up in N.E. complain about winter just as much…I just don’t get it.

  4. TK, thanks for the overseas forecast and congrats again!

Your Berlin forecast is where I thought it would be in terms of what to expect. However, I must say I am both pleased and surprised about the temperatures in Poland and Budapest. I was expecting cooler. Someone else told me about possible fog in Warsaw/Krakow so I was not thinking that temperatures would reach the 70’s. 🙂 I hope you are in charge of changing the weather in Prague. 🙂

Overall this is happily a warmer forecast than I anticipated. And actually less rain than I thought too. Out of curiosity, what are the main crops in the Budapest area?

Thank you again. This is EXTREMELY helpful!

    1. I hope it works out! Europe is not an easy place to forecast. It’s like the Pacific NW on a grand scale, the way systems blast in off the Atlantic, and how sometimes blocking high pressure can turn normally unsettled areas into dry zones for many days.

Most of the crops in that part of the world are grains, along with some sugarbeets. Some corn and soybeans are grown in the region too.

  5. TK- I am so happy that you won, you have such an awesome site for us to come to. We can say what we want here and people respect that, we won’t get bashed like on the wbz blog. Keep up the good work, I am so glad that I found you guys on the wbz blog last winter. I am even happier that I was invited here to this blog. Thank’s TK.

  6. Rain shine I saw your mention of Honey Pot for apples. We always go there but it seems everyone else does also now. My kids gave up going and we all tried Cove Hill Farm in Stow. It’s also on 62 but closer to 117. No one there. Tons of apples. And we saw balck bear skat. Of course everyone was laughing at me because I thought it was the highlight of the day:)

    1. We have been going every year and enjoy It. I love there pumpkin pies, the best that I have ever had. Yes It is crowded but we always seem to manage. My only problem is that we always get lost coming home as the GPS can’t get reception. I think we will be heading there soon. I kind of go by if Its not broke don’t fix it, honey pot works so that’s where we go.

      1. I love their candy apples and cider. It just got a bit to commercial. We’ve always done the maze but now they are charging – that sort of thing. I know we’ll go back but we did enjoy having the orchard pretty much to ourselves at Cove Hill.

How do you go, John? I was thinking 95 to Route 20 Westin and in through Sudbury. Route 20 and on is a lovely ride. Lunch at the Wayside Inn is fun too 🙂 Just sayin’

    1. It still feels quite stuffy and humid inside my house. I am sure though that when I wake up tomorrow morning there will be quite the shock (in a good way). 🙂

  7. I believe we will not get our 1st accumulating snow (1+inches) for at least another 12wks, this is just from looking at some different data as well as listening to some fav meterologist’s, anyways have a great day everyone 🙂

  8. The best part of this fall preview there will not be rain. This will make for great football weather as the Patroits will be home against the Chargers. I wonder how many yards Brady will throw for???

  9. The defense is a concern especially giving up 24 points and all those yards to Miami. The Chargers always seem to play the Patroits tough and I feel this won’t be a walk in the park.

  10. TK, thanks again. Everyone is rethinking their travel wardrobe.

Another question — is there a SNE weather conference in the fall or early winter? I remember this from last year, but really can’t remember the month of the conference.

  11. It’s possible that the far north and west suburbs of Boston could receive a light frost as temps dip to the mid and upper 30’s, Boston looks to only get down to around 45 though.

    1. Certainly possible, wild card will be timing on cloudiness from an approaching disturbance. Temps may never drop to their lowest potential if that cloud deck, even broken and thin, spreads overhead before max cooling.

  12. Mt Washington is 23F this morning and at one point last evening, I saw that it had an observation of light sleet. Will have to check out the Mt. Washington webcam later and see if there’s any snow on the summit…..

    1. Tom are you camping this weekend?? Son and friends are heading to Hart’s Location in Crawford Notch. Temps are forecast to be 32 there. I didn’t realize how much damage 302 received from Irene. Son was telling me about it last night. Hart’s Location was shut off to the north by the Saco and Swift Rivers and to the south a bridge was taken out. As of yesterday there was still no way to get to North Conway from 302 north of the bridge. My son said they were recommending driving down 3 to Meredith and up into North Conway that way – that would take hours.

  13. Hey all, I was wondering if anyone knew of a RV Rental Company in Eastern Mass? My family and I are camping near Keene, NH the weekend of October 22nd. We usually camp in tents but we wanted to bring the young ones up there and it would be too cold for them. Not looking for anything large, a pop up would work fine. So please let me know if you know of any RV Rental Company in the area.

    Thanks!

    1. coastal we used to rent an RV when our kids. I looked quickly and found Fuller RV Rental and that may have been the place we used. http://www.fullerrv.com/

Also there is Cruise America in Middleboro – is that near you? I don’t know how they are but see their RVs on the road a lot.

  14. Coastal,

I don’t know of any personally, however, if you Goggle
Massachusetts RV Rentals or Boston RV Rentals, you’ll
    get pleny of hits.

Presumably you could find something suitable.

    Good luck and have fun!

  15. What a day. I can see a fire on the deck in my near future!! We left every one of the four windows open in the bedroom last night and woke up to about 50 degrees in the room – it was so nice!!!

  16. Tom – with regard to your Mt. Washington post, my son just txt’d me that there is snow on Washington and the presidentials!!!! I feel like a kid at Christmas and I’m not even there 🙂

    1. Hi Vicki.

Very cool, I’m sure the views up there must be awesome. We are camping next weekend, which I think looks a bit milder.

  17. TK you see any humid weather coming up? Trying to decide if I should the AC out of the baby’s room, 2nd floor so it’s normally warmer.

  18. There are indications of a warm up around mid-week (Wed./Thurs.) but I guess we are in that time of season in which any mild temps have a price to be paid, mainly in the form of “unsettled” (wet) conditions. I need some dry times so I can get my badly needed yardwork done before the leaves start to fall. Hopefully any leaves won’t start seriously falling until after mid-October since I live in the city of Boston…I suspect the suburbs in the next 2-3 weeks?

    1. maybe next Thursday could get humid in southern New England….dewpoints into the 60s….but not terribly warm, mid to upper 70s.

  19. Well, the winds look fairly light outside, not a lot of high clouds yet and with the sun very low in the sky, temps are already into the upper 50s. I think the temps are going to drop fast the first couple of hours this evening.
