Thursday Forecast

7:15AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 25-29)
High pressure brings great April weather today with mild temperatures except for the typical cooler coastal areas due to a sea breeze. Unsettled weather returns during Friday as a low pressure area approaches from the west, bringing a warm front through during the morning and midday followed by a cold front during the night and early Saturday. The upper level trough driving this system looks like it may be in no hurry to get out of here, prolonging showery weather well into Saturday, along with gusty wind and chilly air. And just as that system finally exits, another will arrive on its heals Sunday, although that particular disturbance will be smaller and may get pushed somewhat to the south, so the coverage of rainfall may be less. High pressure returns with more nice weather by Monday.

  1. Coastal…
North Conway will probably be seeing fairly frequent showers until at least mid-morning Saturday. And the shower threat never really vanishes completely but diminishes considerably by midday.

  2. I almost fell over reading a post from Eric Fisher yesterday that Logan was running 5F above average for April and sure enough, it is.

After the week in North Carolina, I have been cold since returning last Sunday.

Just goes to show you how much milder to warmer the spring climate is in much of the country compared to New England’s.

Frozen Hudson Bay, SE Canada’s snow cover and the cold labrador current really delay the onset of warmth in New England greatly compared to the rest of the country.

Looking at the upcoming mid and long range, New England is progged to be the cool corner of the country as the air-flow comes from these 3 cold controls.

    1. You sound like this is a brand new revelation???? How long have you been living here??? πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      1. I hear you ….

its actually a real struggle I am going through.

Over the last several years, my desire to be in a warmer climate has slowly been growing over time. The past trip I took has made that feeling stronger. I know what I am missing.

My wife has no desire to head south permanently, but is open to camping in the south during the cold season down the road during retirement.

I just don’t know if I’m going to make it up here to that point. πŸ™‚

The toughest part of the year for me is now, that March to mid May period. Its chilly everywhere in the heart of winter, but its tough in April and May to see so many 70s, and we have to be thrilled with either sunshine or a “warm” day in the low 60s.

        1. It isn’t funny but it does make me smile fondly. Mac and I would have had the same problem. I sort of suspect my girls – at least the older – would happily move south. Although the younger daughter was just out and said it is cold.

        2. Sorry to hear that.
I would NEVER EVER move South. NEVER!

So there you go, different strokes for different folks.

Hang in there, the school year will be over soon. πŸ˜€

  3. 12Z NAMS have us on the verge of SNOW for Sunday night.
    Something to watch. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
AND if that were to happen, it would not surprise me in the least.
Each run gets the Sunday/Sunday night system a bit stronger and wetter.

    1. Well then – it would be 32 years since the April 28/29 storm where we had about a foot in Framingham.

  4. Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes. I am getting sprung from the hospital today and with some new meds and careful monitoring I should be just fine. Can’t wait to get home to my boys!

    1. Seeing your post here made my day – maybe my month. GREAT to hear you are heading home. I am sure your boys can’t wait to see you also.

  5. Thank you, TK.

Good news, Sue, really glad to hear you’re on the mend.

Tom, I believe that March to May in New England is hard to deal with, today notwithstanding (it’s a beauty). I certainly understand where you are coming from. I think that you and I are different when it comes to dealing with heat and humidity. Most people can handle it better than I can. I used to handle it fine when I was much younger. I can’t anymore. This means no moves south for me. I find DC very hard to deal with from late April through September, so any further south would be really hard.

  6. Thanks TK.

Sue, great to hear you are heading home!

If I were to move anywhere, it would be further north to northern VT or NH. Good hiking, skiing, earlier first snow and later last snow πŸ™‚

    1. I would probably go north also. Friends moved to York from Wellesley. There is a ton to offer there from theatre to restaurants to the ocean. I think even Mac would enjoy all the area has to offer. There are a few ski areas within 45ish miles as well.

  7. Speaking of cold, it was down to 38 this AM at my house when I woke up. Saw a few observations from VT of snow at the higher elevations of Stowe and Jay Peak this AM as well.

    1. Oh my – used to drive through Rumford on my way to Rangeley. Paper / pulp mill area. That is one angry looking river. Thanks, Mark.

  8. That is good news Sue!
Mark good luck to your Islanders against the Hurricanes. Aaron Boone right now I would say manager of the year with all the injuries the Yankees have they are on a six game winning streak and have a record of 14-10. When this team gets healthy look out.

    1. Thx JJ. Hurricanes are going to be tough but happy the Islanders have home ice again in the second round.

Yankees are finally on a roll….impressive indeed given all the backup players in their lineup right now. What a great come from behind win last night!

  9. It’s definitely been a warm April so far, in spite a lot of doom and gloom talk. It fits in perfectly with what I expected from this month- ups and downs but more of the ups.

The last 5 days of the month will be bruising to that + departure, however. It won’t be wiped out, but we’ll probably go from solidly above average to just slightly above it. The warmth will rebuild as we head a little further into May, but from what I’m seeing the next 7-10 days or so have the potential to be rather miserable in SNE.

      1. Well we postponed a second site visit scheduled for tomorrow with atlas till next thurs. Do you think you can clear Thursday am please?

        1. I cut the grass for the first time yesterday. It used to kill my allergies. Now it’s fine. Love it!

          1. My son in law did ours…or most of it. Don’t know if he finished tonight. I was out for a bit

    1. Definitely has potential to be a busy day down here. We’ve had a rather active start to the severe weather season. Would not surprise me to see a tornado or two in the mid-Atlantic tomorrow.

  10. Last Friday I believe there were tornadoes in NC and VA. To me it seems April and May tend to be the big severe weather months in the Mid Atlantic.

  11. Might not be far away from a mix or a touch of snow Sunday night. It would not be a first, but it’s rare after mid April.

  12. 18z runs of the American models show some accumulating snow parts of PA and Upstate NY for Sunday.

  13. Sorry for the delay…
Plumber in the vicinity replacing one last stretch of old pipe that connects 2nd floor kitchen sink to basement. Finally leaking after decades.

    New post!
