The Week Ahead

1:33AM

The humid stretch of weather continues, but rainfall was limited during the weekend as most of the moisture was going around the edge of a high pressure area over the western Atlantic, and staying offshore of New England. This will continue to be the case early this week, also aided by a high pressure area at the surface, building down from the Canadian Maritimes. This means mostly dry weather through Tuesday, lots of clouds at times but sun as well, and air still somewhat humid but not oppressively so. As we get to the middle of the week, the rain chances will increase as a cut-off low pressure area to the west moves westward and the ridge to the east also nudges westward, pushing the area of moisture back to the west as well. This low to the west is finally expected to shift northeastward, combine with another trough, and swing through New England at the end of the week, first with additional showers, then opening the door for some drier and cooler air by weekend, which is also the start of October! It should be noted that some of the computer guidance slows this trough down as it comes by here, and even tries to close it off, or cut it off from the main jet stream, allowing it to sit over or just east of New England next weekend. This scenario would be more unsettled than what I have in my extended forecast, but I consider it only a slight possibility at this time, hence the more optimistic forecast. Stay tuned for later updates…

  1. Thanks TK!!

Any mote details on the forecast for my Europe trip? Gonna start packing tonight:) I still am seeing pretty darn nice weather from what I can tell.

  2. Thanks TK !…..About a month now of neutral or slightly positive NAO with a very amplified jet stream. Wonder if this will continue into the winter season.

Pleasant surprise to find out the Sox won game 2.

  3. It looks as if tomorrow will be a great day for a golf tournament!! TK, do you think Thursday morning will be a washout in the Southwick area? My husband and son had postponed golf from two weeks ago until this Thursday due to weather.

As I write, it seems my husband is playing an awful lot of golf …….. hmmmmmm 😉

  4. I just heard on the news about the lock down at the Marshfield Schools because the police are chasing a murder suspect. I know Tom is a teacher and lives there but I am not sure if he teaches in Marshfield. If so, I sure how that He and the students are all right.

    1. Oh no – thank you for letting us know, Coastal. Please keep us posted. I haven’t heard anything. I do believe his kids are in Marshfield schools

        1. A friend of mine who lives there said that the most recent update they gave to the parents was that all schools are now locked down. That was a few minutes ago.

          1. bostonchannel (Ch 5) has it on their web site. They said a 5 month old was found dead in the same area Friday. It’s tragic.

      1. Hi Coastal and Vicki,

Yes, I am in Marshfield and we had close to a 3 hr lockdown. However, my kids school is on the other side of town and was not affected.

  5. Hey Tom, regarding lockdowns is actual “learning” still continuing or are teachers required to stop lecturing until all is clear? It is amazingly scary how school safety has changed since Columbine in 1999. Back in my day, at worst maybe some kid pulled the fire alarm and we all had to file quickly and quietly down the stairs and out the door and onto the sidewalk until the “all clear” signal to file back inside. Most times the fire drills were planned in advance.

    1. Hi Philip.

Some can have learning and some dont. For example, a lockdown can be called for a medical emergency in the building. The lockdown’s purpose is to get the hall clears to get medical treatment to the person as quickly as possible. Usually, the principal will distinguish and say that all are supposed to stay in the room, but class can continue. Today, a lockdown was announced and then it was quiet for a long time. Since we practice them, I knew that after 5 minutes, this was for some kind of safety issue and so, we sat quiet, with door locked and shades drawn for quite a long time. I was impressed with the direction they gave us and our students response.

      1. Tom that is very interesting. It has to be doubly concerning for you with your kids in the Marshfield schools too.

I was going to ask you how you like Marshfield and John how he liked Pembroke. My youngest and her husband really like the area. He won’t graduated from Framingham University until spring but they are interested in looking for a house in that area.

        1. Hi Vicki- well I can tell you how I feel about both Towns
since I grew up in Marshfield and now live in Pembroke. And this is just my thinking. I love Pembroke so much. The town always has something going on for famlies, the schools are great and plenty to do. We have lots of shopping with big name stores and plenty of choices for eating out. We live about 12 minutes from the hanover mall, and lots to do in hanover. Pembroke is a nice country town with lots of ponds. When I was growing up in Marshfield there was nothing to do. Marshfield has some great beaches.

          1. Hi Vicki.

I agree with John. I love the whole south shore area..and as John says, Hanover, Pembroke and Marshfield are all nice. I think all 3 towns have good school systems and the quality of life is excellent.

  6. My guess is that the big Low pressure area sitting in the midwest – if this was the spring or early summer there would be a big breakout of severe weather. The setup looks similar to this past spring/early summer, except this is fall now. I know there was some severe weather down south last evening – haven’t watched weather lately.

This summery weather around here isn’t half-bad; just kind of weird seeing the trees changing color and the sun’s direction changed from the spring/summer – and the shorter days.

This may be one of the easiest forecasts I’ve ever done for Europe.
Mostly sunny to partly cloudy every single day, HOWEVER, the Rhine River Valley can and often does experience dense overnight and early morning fog when there is a high pressure ridge over them, as there will be during your time there. So be aware of that. I see light winds at your first destination, and occasional breezes thereafter. Daytime highs lower 70s Frankfurt, mainly 60s for your locations on the remainder of the trip, with a sneaky cooler day possible mid trip that may struggle to make 60.

Have a great trip and please let me know how this verifies.

  8. The relatively clear skies and modestly lower humidity levels are allowing for a cooler evening, as compared to the last 4 or 5 nights. Feels good. Now, if some of it will flow into the house.

  9. Thanks Tom for your response regarding lockdowns…interesting and a shame they are needed at all. Very sad that our 21st century society is so violent. Anyway, I have another question…are schools immediately required to notify law enforcement and the media outlets when a lockdown is commenced?

The reason I ask is that it seems every time there is a school lockdown, regardless of the reason or location, it is always a “BREAKING NEWS” announcement at the bottom of the TV screen or an interruption in regular programming.
