Friday Forecast

6:57AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 16-20)
High pressure to the northeast of the region continues to cause a broad but weak onshore flow into Saturday, keeping heat at bay but allowing humidity to increase as Atlantic moisture is drawn into the region, as evident this morning by low clouds and areas of fog and patchy drizzle. This will burn away today but the moisture may allow for a few pop up showers over interior hilly locations. This process repeats again tonight / Saturday. By Sunday, a more southerly flow will result in warmer temperatures, more humidity still, and a slightly better risk for showers and a possible thunderstorm popping up, although throughout the weekend the region will be largely rain-free. Monday-Tuesday will see a return to the feel of mid summer heat as high pressure grabs some of the heat from the southern US and propels it into New England, giving the area its first widespread 90+ temperatures since July. Thunderstorm chances will be pretty much non-existent Monday and limited due to it being rather warm aloft, keeping the atmosphere more stable.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Areas of fog morning. Isolated afternoon pop-up showers interior hills. Highs 75-82. Wind variable, mostly E to SE, up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Humid. Lows 62-69. Wind light S.
SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 80-87. Wind S up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Humid. Lows 62-69. Wind light S.
MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Humid. Highs 87-94. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind light SW.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 87-94. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 21-25)
The timing of a cold front approaching will determine how hot it gets on August 21 and when a chance of more widespread showers and thunderstorms occurs (between later August 21 and early August 22). A shot of cooler/drier air briefly follows during August 22 and the August 23-24 weekend looks rain-free with a warm-up as high pressure dominates. By the end of the period, the heat/humidity returns as high pressure slides offshore.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 26-30)
Indications are for stronger high pressure off the Atlantic Coast for the late days of August, resulting in above normal temperatures, humid conditions, and a few opportunities for showers/thunderstorms.

  1. to add to WX yesterday, every month since March I believe we have had the warmest of that said month and it looks to continue. We also have to put into account how in our summers and their winters we are further from sun and while we are having winter and the southern hemisphere is having Summer we are closer to the Sun. We also have to put into account co2 levels in the atmosphere. Due to said large area of land and forest in the northern hemisphere CO2 levels is lowest in the Fall and highest in the spring which impacts temperature. You can literally see the earth breathing.

  2. Thanks TK
Lets hope that break in the humidity comes late Thursday and the following weekend. Latest GFS run has some refreshing air coming in here late Thurs and next weekend.

  3. I am trying to look for any bright spots in what looks to be a weather pattern the last two weeks of August that at this moment looks to feature a lot of warm to hot days and a real STICKORAMA!

        1. To me when you get past the first week of September the heat and humidity doesn’t have the staying power it does in June July August. It’s all about the dewpoint if the dewpoint is in the 50s and your highs are in the mid to upper 80s it doesn’t feel as bad as it would if those dew points are in the mid to upper 60s low 70s.

  4. We could use STINKORAMA! When it is quite sticky out I like to use the word STICKORAMA. Let’s hope this upcoming winter SNOWORAMA is going to be used a lot on this blog as well as JpDave using HOLY CRAP BATMAN a lot of times. There were too many ICEORAMA’S last winter.

  5. The current 12z GFS is a great example of why TK’s steady approach to forecasting and not switching with each model run makes his forecasting so accurate. Someday, I will learn this approach. 🙂 🙂

Certainly, the 12z still has the cooler break coming late week, but it’s much less of a cool push, as the 500mb closed low projects on this run to stay much further to the north.

  6. JJ, I agree with you 100%. It can get hot in late August, and it will this year, at least for a few days. That heat can extend periodically into September. But, the “staying power,” which you refer to, is no longer there. This is not just in terms of stretches of time. It is also in any given day. A 90F day in July is very different from a 90F day in September. Evenings and nights are dramatically different, in fact.

By the way, are you hoping for a Yankees-Mets series? It’s a possibility. To show the disparity between leagues: The Mets are 3 games over .500 and very much in the wild card race. I believe they’re 1 or 2 games back. The Red Sox are 5 games over .500 and out of contention, in my view. The Cubs are 6 games over .500 and in first place. That’s crazy.

      1. Well, the majority of September occurs in summer, but with regards to normal, we’ve had a majority of mild to warm Sep/Oct combos over the last several years, yes.

  7. The Mets need to take care of business this weekend against the Royals. They lose this series to the Royals they will play the Indians next and that won’t be easy. I still think were looking at a Yankees Dodgers World Series. I respect Houston with the pitching but if the Yankees get home field advantage if they play the Astros the Astros struggle at Yankee Stadium.

  8. It looks like CRAPTACULAR weather Sunday through Thursday, that’s potentially
a 5 day heat wave, at least for parts of the area with temps near 90 Sunday. Sure to
hit 90 Sunday in some locations. 90+ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday AND Thursday
at least according to the today’s 12Z GFS. We shall see.

  9. In the Internet era I don’t believe Greenland has ever had as many hits and views as it has had today. Because of Trump’s apparently having considered offering to purchase the island, Greenland is most definitely in the news. Ironically, this exposure may change some people’s minds on climate change.

I’ve been obsessed by Greenland since I was about 4. So, it’s always been on my radar. But, I am not representative of the general population.

    1. I always thought it was funny that Greenland was largely ice and Iceland was rather green. 😉

      1. There is a specific reason for that. Loosely, Greenland didn’t want people to find out how lovely it is. And Iceland …well, the opposite

There may be a close lightning strike when I say this so be prepared to duck…..trump isn’t the first who has suggested buying Greenland. Strategically, it is a great strategic location.

        1. I’ve wondered why the US didn’t do something with that in the past. Sticking to my rules and leaving politics out of it, just from a standpoint of our own interests, it surprises me we haven’t, regardless of who the C.I.C. is. I guess we’ll see what happens. I’ve always had this dream of visiting that land, not that I’m much of a traveler, but it would be neat!

          1. Agreed. Greenland has enormous strategic value, and may have untapped resources as well. I don’t consider the thought of purchasing Greenland crazy at all.

          2. We tried to do something. It think as Long ago as after WWI or II. Greenland doesn’t want any part of it.

  10. Today’s GFS 12z run is a crap-fest. It has no idea.

Boston will have 2 90+ days next week, and may barely eek out a 3rd.

  11. The Inuits are a tough and resilient bunch. Vicki is correct about the naming of Greenland and Iceland. I believe the Vikings did so to confuse people. They effectively colonized Greenland for a while many centuries ago, but were driven out by the Inuit. This was one of the few victories for the natives in North and South America. Well, I’m not sure if Greenland technically is part of the North American continent. But, you get the point.

If America ever does purchase Greenland, we should give it statehood along with Puerto Rico.

  12. TK, Vicki – as the Greenland thread continues (I’m sure many at WHW are yawning at this point) … You’re correct that Greenlanders do not want to sell their island. Nor are the Danes interested. Greenland’s relationship to Denmark is analogous to Puerto Rico’s relationship with the U.S. What Greenlanders do want is more tourism and more trade. 10 years ago, Air Greenland had direct flights to Baltimore. Why Baltimore? Lord knows. Maybe just to give Greenlanders climate shock in the middle of summer, you know, when it’s 98F in Baltimore with a dewpoint of 75 (while it’s 53F in Nuuk, with a dewpoint of 38). There aren’t any direct flights anymore, as there wasn’t much demand. To get more U.S. tourism they’ll have to reestablish direct flights. Currently, you have to go to Iceland, then transfer to propeller planes to several towns in Greenland. You can’t even fly from any Canadian city (which surprises me). So, it’s a very long trip.

      1. Good point, Tom. The government certainly doesn’t have the money. Well, it could do what it always does … borrow some more.

  13. Some patriots news this is the current Receiver/running back group
so the weapons the patriots now have
    1.Julian Edelman
    2 N’Keal Harry
    3. Dorsett
    4 Demaryius Thomas
    5 James white
6 Sony Michel Burkhead and Damien Harris
    7. JOSH GORDON JUST GOT REINISTATED. I am honestly shocked but there was a rumor about it happening soon. This is a rather potent group of receivers and running backs.

The defense also looks solid as well. If the patriots can stay healthy and keep people on the field man this looks like a high powered offense that can pound it and air it out.

I NEED TO FIND A PLACE THAT CAN PLAY THE PATRIOTS GAMES!!

    1. Interesting….All off season the talk was NO WAY Gordon would ever be
re-instated. That is quite a weapon IF he can keep his head on straight
      and stay away from trouble.

    1. No changes to the previous fcst is one thing, and I’m going to the Jaffrey Festival of Fireworks today. It’s a biggie. A real biggie. 🙂

      1. Jaffrey, NH? That’s a beautiful area. Peterborough, Hancock, Francestown. The entire Monadnock region is a gem.
