Sunday Forecast

7:10AM

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 22-26)
On this first full day of winter we will enjoy a fair amount of sunshine for the limited number of hours we have it available to us, as high pressure controls the weather. You’ll notice a slightly milder feel to the air in comparison to recent days, and this will be even more evident, temperature-wise, but accompanied by a bit more of a breeze on Monday as high pressure slips off to the south of the region. A moisture-starved cold front will sneak through from north to south early Tuesday, setting up a fair and seasonably chilly Christmas Eve. Weak low pressure approaches from the west on Christmas Day, spreading cloudiness into the region, and perhaps a few festive flakes of snow or not-as-festive drops of rain to the south during the afternoon. After this system passes offshore at night, it’ll intensify enough to drag a little more potent cold air mass into the region for Thursday as high pressure approaches from the northwest.

  1. Joshua my condolences to you and your family. It is tough to lose a loved one at any point but especially tough during the holiday season. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  2. Good morning and thanks TK!
It was good to see Barry on this morning, haven’t seen him on air in a while.

    1. Yes, and hopefully many more mornings to come! 🙂

I hope his brief hiatus wasn’t a health issue. At least he’s back on air. Looked great actually.

  3. Thanks TK
I am hoping the Cowboys give me a Christmas gift. If the Cowboys beat the Eagles they win the NFC East.

  4. This photo was taken shortly after sunrise yesterday at Hampton Beach NH. The scene was fascinating to me as the sun had risen above that deck of offshore stratocumulus you can see along the horizon, shining through high ice crystal clouds and casting an orange glow down on the ocean surface that had very regular wave swells coming toward shore, while the arctic sea smoke you see in the photo was blowing gently away from the shore.

  5. Here is one more photo taken not long after the one above, basically the same background but in the foreground is the statue known as “The Lady”, which sits just north of the main beach stage building.

      1. Wonderful photos, TK…
One of my 2020 resolutions is to study and take more photos with my new Canon SLR.

    1. We may even go well beyond that without any significant travel issues.

Of course I say that with only moderate confidence.

        1. As I said, it has nothing really to do with a 3-day weekend. 1) That weekend does not fall on the same dates every year.
          2) If you pick out any 3-day period from December 21 through March 21, they have about an equal chance of having precipitation at some point during them as any other 3-day period.

There is nothing that stands out about that weekend, staistically.

          1. Well it stands out for me, personally. Last year there was a very messy turned icy event and that Sunday and Monday mornings I had difficulty getting a ride to work. Of all the holiday weekends my memories have been some sort of precipitation falling or threat of such. I just don’t have the same with Presidents Day Weekend. If anything they are quiet and boring. I guess it’s just me and my imagination?

            1. I certainly understand that it’s in no way the holiday itself but I do wonder if that particular timeframe in January is coincidentally “ripe” for threats around here.

              1. It’s simply climatology. Those 3 days are no stormier than any other 3 in January (and most of the winter).

  6. Answer to yesterday’s quiz.

Today marks the winter solstice, the start of winter. What is the warmest temperature Boston has ever recorded to start the winter season?
    A. 55
    B. 65
    C. 67
    D. 40

    The correct answer is B.

  7. Happy Hanukkah to all celebrating starting tonight and all week!

May the holiday bring joy, fun and light to your family and friends!

    Enjoy!!!

    1. Lovely, Captain.

I would like to also add a wish for joy and light to our WHW family members celebrating. Hanukkah Sameach.

I made latke for the first time and will have tonight for dinner.

  8. So remember when the GFS had a 25-35 inch blizzard for southeastern New England for December 22?

    What a storm, eh? 😉

  9. I absolutely hate Ch 4’s new graphics for weather. They are horrendous.

Who decided that a grey based map was a good idea to display the satellite on, that depicts clouds in shades of GREY. That design is about as brilliant as a dull shade of grey. 😛

The entire set of graphics (black boxes with white lettering and overly simple icons) is really difficult to look at.

    On a scale of 1-10, I give it a 2.

    1. Oh good, I thought it was just me.

I struggle with what is supposed to be clear sky on the new graphics. I think it’s snow every time and have to adjust.

I think your rating of 2 is being kind.

    2. I believe it’s part of the new CBSN. I don’t really have a problem though with the 7-day graphics but I do agree with you regarding the grey satellite. It is hard to tell the difference between clouds and clear sky.

  10. I agree with the comment about the channel 4 graphics,I was thinking the same thing. They look like old technology, and not very easy on the eyes. Unfortunately the quality of the graphics do not match the quality of the forecast presentation given by the channel 4 meteorologists.

  11. Good Monday morning. Yawn. I am all partied out. On the go the whole weekend.
I destroyed my diet this weekend. Will have to get back to it after Wednesday.

    re: Weather
I am BORED SILLY with this weather. It does absolutely nothing for me.
Great for travel over the holidays is about the best I can give it.

I looked over all of the models this morning. PUTRID!! Always subject to change, of course, but current prospects are bleak and bleaker.

Wake me up when there is something interesting brewing….
