Monday Forecast

8:38AM

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 23-27)
High pressure south of the region brings fair, milder weather today. A cold front drops through the region from north to south tonight with no more than just some cloudiness, but brings seasonably chilly air back to the region for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. High pressure will keep Christmas Eve fair, but a boundary to the south will allow some cloudiness to arrive from the west during Christmas Day, although it will likely be too dry for the festive flakes I previously mentioned. But this will quietly start a run of disturbances impacting the region about every other day, as we’ll have another weak system passing by early on December 27 with a touch of rain or mix, as we’ll be lacking cold enough air for snow.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 40-47. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 20-27. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 33-40. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT (CHRISTMAS EVE): Partly cloudy. Lows 20-27. Wind light variable.
WEDNESDAY (CHRISTMAS DAY): Mostly cloudy. Highs 32-39. Wind light variable.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 20-27. Wind light variable.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with light rain/mix possible overnight. Lows 32-39. Wind light variable.
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with light rain/mix possible morning. Clearing afternoon. Highs 40-47. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 28-JANUARY 1)
Progressive pattern with low pressure systems passing by about every other day (current timing December 29 and 31) with minor precipitation events favoring rain/mix over snow. Temperatures near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 2-6)
Trend is for more polar jet stream, slightly colder and mostly dry weather with a couple minor light snow or snow shower events.

  1. Thank you, TK

Will we hold onto the snow cover?

Question from yesterday’s blog. Is the new bz layout on tv, on internet or both?

    1. I know it’s on tv, I don’t know about the others Vicki. Barry didn’t feature it in his weathercast this morning.

      1. Darn! If I had known Barry was going to be on air, I definitely would have tuned in. Oh well, next time. 🙂

  2. Thanks TK !

Happy about the Dec 26th weather !!!!!!!!!

If there is a Dec 31st storm that dumps 10 ft of snow and shuts down Logan til May, I’m all for it 🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. Of course, I believe TK’s overall dry theme, however, within that, I’m sure something, whether it’s small or large will surprise us with only a few days notice.

          1. With our luck, they’ll all be rain events in between the dry spells. Around here no matter how cold, we almost always end up raining as opposed to snowing down the road. 😉

  3. I watch the WBZ forecasts on the web site only. They are the same as one would see via TV, I presume, although there are some updates that only appear on the web site. The graphics have been updated.

      1. Thanks Philip. I wouldn’t know new from old since I don’t watch. So they are the ones you are all not liking?

        1. It’s the new graphics that are at issue. For me personally, it’s the satellite loop. I think the precipitation isn’t all that great either. Not certain though since we haven’t had much lately. The new graphics came out at the same time as our last significant event.

  4. Vicki.
On the ch 4 Boston site, within weather, find Zack Green’s forecast from last night and wait for the 1:06 time frame and that local grey map begins. Heck, even he comments how difficult it is to tell clouds apart on the map 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. Maybe the old graphics will return or (more likely) the new graphics will get a reboot. Let’s see what happens. Thanks for that info Vicki. 😉

  5. Re WBZ – The graphics have been this way for a month now. They are flatter graphics and more legible/modern. I’m actually a fan of them. Here’s a comparison of new (top two images) vs the old graphics (bottom two images)

    1. I agree with you on these images. I don’t have a problem with the greys in the links I posted below. I am apr to use shades of grey in some of my work so I’m used to it. But I can sure see why it is hard for some.

  6. 12z GFS too little too late with the coastal redevelopment for the 12/30 storm….

    https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gfs&region=us&pkg=mslp_pcpn_frzn&runtime=2019122312&fh=168

12z CMC however has the storm much further south which we result in a colder solution for all of New England…

    https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gem&region=us&pkg=mslp_pcpn_frzn&runtime=2019122312&fh=192

Odds favor a wet solution right now but you never know. Still 7 days out…

  7. Thank you, TK.

Really mild today. Birds certainly like these mild interludes. At least, we can infer that from their chirping. They don’t do much of that when it’s 18F.

Julian Edelman left off the Pro Bowl roster again. That’s scandalous. In my book, he is the 3rd most valuable player in the NFL this season – behind Lamar Jackson and Michael Thomas. Without Edelman the Patriots do not make the playoffs.

  8. Re: Ch 4 graphics.
The national map is “ok” but not great.
    The snowfall maps are ok.
I dislike the 7-day layout but it’s “tolerable”, barely.
    The rest: Terrible.

I’ll take the previous version 100 times over.

    1. If it’s the 7 day similar to the one Dr posted, I find it much easier to read. It pops rather than running together.

  9. Thanks, TK…

A beautiful Christmas Eve eve! Spent a little time chipping a few golf balls on the side lawn.

Remembering the Christmas, 1994 nor’easter, 25 years ago tonight!

If I remember, we (Taunton) did not see snow with the storm, but I remember the fierce winds overnight! It was one of the strongest windstorms of my lifetime, right up there with the Blizzard of 1978, Hurricane Gloria and the 2005 December 9 blizzard.

There was an 88 mph wind gust in Walpole.

It was also 25 years ago tonight that seven souls, including five children and a mom and a dad, perished in a house fire in North Attleboro. The winds of that storm fueled the fire and made it impossible to fight, leading to the horrible tragedy.

Here’s the Wikipedia report on that storm:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_1994_nor%27easter

      1. No wonder the storm didn’t ring a bell. It was a rain event. In fact that winter 1994-95 only 14.9” at Logan.

  10. It’s mild across most of the lower 48, aside from a bubble of cold high pressure near North Dakota. But even that is not really cold. In fact, it’s seasonably cold. Also mild in places like Moscow and Eastern Europe. Western Europe is mostly mild, aside from a bubble of cold high pressure (fairly small area and reach) in the vicinity of Stockholm. But that’s really it.

While above normal temperatures are not unusual this time of year in one or two regions in the northern hemisphere. It is rather unusual in practically all regions to see above normal temperatures, with almost no areas showing below normal (this includes most of Canada, except the Yukon where it is below normal in some locales)

What does this mean moving forward? Probably not much. But, the serious cold better start building and diving south at a certain point soon.

        1. don”t have much to contribute plus have been extremely busy and I am still napping. I open an eye here and there to make sure
          I don’t miss anything.

    1. I have made serious arrangements for it to come up the coast, feeding off a very humid Bermuda high while I simultaneously arranged for an arctic high to move into eastern Canada. It took

  11. last minute shopping at Marshalls.
