Sunday Forecast

3:22AM

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 16-20)
Low pressure passes north of the region today dragging a weak cold front across the region, producing cloudiness but no precipitation. An area of high pressure brings fair and slightly colder weather for Presidents Day Monday. A stronger low pressure area takes a similar track to today’s system on Tuesday, and its trailing fronts will produce precipitation here, starting as snow/mix but going quickly to a rain event, which will move through rather rapidly, setting the stage for windy and colder weather behind the departing system Wednesday and fair but seasonably chilly weather Thursday as high pressure moves in.
TODAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 39-46. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 22-29. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
MONDAY (PRESIDENTS DAY): Mostly sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 18-25. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY: Clouding over early. Snow/mix arriving midday, changing to rain quickly south to north, then tapering to rain shower west to east. Highs 42-49 occurring late-day. Wind SE up to 10 MPH early, shifting to SW 10-20 MPH during the day.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy with rain showers early, then clearing. Lows 32-39. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to NW.
WEDNESDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Temperatures steady 32-39. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 15-22. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (FEBRUARY 21-25)
High pressure brings fair, seasonably chilly weather February 21 then sinks to the south of the region with fair and milder weather February 22-23. Watching for a potential storm system, rain favored over snow, February 24-25.

DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 26-MARCH 1)
Turning colder. Watching for a potential storm system, snow/mix favored over rain, in the late February 26 to February 28 time period. Drier weather later in the period.

      1. Very interesting article Vicki. Thank you.

JPD, if you see that coyote again, you really should report it to BPD or Animal Control. He/she may not just be “passing through” your immediate neighborhood. I’m somewhat surprised that the media hasn’t mentioned a coyote sighting especially given a “Boston” neighborhood as opposed to a typical suburb.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK!
Vicki great article thanks for posting! Living in a heavily wooded area of my town I often see and hear packs of them. They tend to stay in the woods trying not to venture too close to us when we are outside, however my wife and youngest son take very little comfort in that fact, especially when you have a large pack of them howling, knowing they are a few yards from you in the woods and you can’t see them because it’s dark, kind of eerie.

    1. As Vicki’s article mentioned, they are no longer afraid of humans in the least. I’m wondering now if eventually we will be literally “food” to them as I suspect they are always “hungry” to some extent even if they have already eaten.

These sightings are becoming worrisome to me now even though I live in Boston. I leave for work long before sunrise depending on the season.

      1. I’m not sure what the shock is about . There are plenty of coyotes in the city and just because your not seeing them doesn’t meant they do not exist ,

  2. Philip. I had to reread the article after your comment. I don’t believe the message was they are no longer afraid of humans. The hazing was only common sense if one should uncharacteristically become aggressive. He preceded the comment by…

“ Maguranis said coyotes generally want to stay away from humans as much as we want to stay away from them. Only 12 coyote bites on humans have been recorded in Massachusetts over the last 65 years. Four of those were confirmed to have rabies, while one was unconfirmed but likely. The others were due to the animal becoming habituated and losing its fear of humans.”

As central said, they don’t bother you. We have had them walk across our hill and past turkeys and foxes and just keep going. In framingham, we had one that sat in a driveway near to the school bus stop. If you startle or threaten, they will do what ALL animals do…react. As far as reporting them…..removal falls into the part Joe mentioned re killing (or removal) only creates more

  3. On the coyote subject: this may have happened before but two nights ago is the closest I have ever heard them to my house doing their late night singing. It’s both eerie and beautiful at the same time.

It was about 1:00 a.m. Saturday and I had just gotten home and was standing out there listening for a few minutes.

    1. Wow. I’m surprised I have only heard them once from our home. Others in town hear them regularly. Especially now during mating season. We hear the red foxes screech though. That is chilling until you know what it is.

      1. I was used to hearing them on the west side of the city where there are long stretches of tall grass and short trees along the high tension lines that run through that area.

But this is the first time that they were so notably close to my section. They’ve been spotted around here during the day wandering but this was the first time you could hear them singing from here that I recall and they sounded very very close. I’m pretty sure they were near the school that is literally a 3-minute walk from me.

        1. Such a primal cry. I like hearing a pack but admit from a distance is fine. I figure they are asking for space and 8m happy to respect that.

          1. I have no problem respecting their desire for space. The sad thing is as a whole we have not been doing a very good job at that, developing every square inch of open space we have left around here. We don’t need that many houses and condos.

  4. Thank you, TK.

Amsterdam recorded its warmest February 16th ever: 16C. Keep in mind that Holland does not have the kind of variation in temperature we have. So, you might think 16C is not that warm. But, for Holland it is. On the flipside, their record cold for February 16th is -11C, which for us would be nowhere near record territory, But, for them -11C would be extremely cold.

I did like the nuanced explanation of the record by Dutch mets. Here’s where they do NOT speak in hyperbolic terms, yet do let the audience know that this is unusual and likely related to global warming: “The record was caused in part by Storm Dennis that ushered in a strong southwesterly. A related factor is the ocean temperature – which has been rising in recent years. So, a southwesterly nowadays produces warmer than average temperatures.” I’ve translated this from Dutch, so pardon the stilted translation.

  5. Signs of a dive to neutral of the AO and near neutral or slightly negative NAO any time from about 1 week from now on into early March. Initially it should provide at least one significant snow threat, possibly more. After that it should provide colder/drier. If this transpires it’s only about 4 or 5 weeks later than I initially thought it might occur. 😉

Yup. The atmosphere likes to show who’s boss. 😛

  6. Trivia Quiz.

Boston has recorded 3.6″ of snow so far this [calendar] year. That’s the fifth lowest total through February 15th. Which year and amount was the lowest.

    A. 0.0″ in 1936
    B. 0.7″ in 1980
    C. 2.2″ in 1989
    D. 2.6″ in 2011

Answer only after the B’s-Rangers game.

      1. The NHL (and NBA) should stop scheduling back-to-back games on consecutive nights. Players need rest to recoup a bit.

        1. I don’t have a problem with back to back games. Variations in those schedules help test the ability of the athletes. There have been back to back games for decades. Each team has approximately the same amount per season.

  7. The Bruins are an outstanding team. The Celtics aren’t too shabby, either. It’s too bad sports radio is mostly about the Tom Brady watch and the Red Sox who look poised to be basement dwellers just 15 months after winning it all. I love baseball, but don’t really enjoy hearing about a dysfunctional and now very mediocre team. The Brady watch has gotten very stale. I always found soap operas really boring. And hearing people mind read Brady’s “likes,” tweets, Instagram posts, visits to Las Vegas, is dull and mostly uninformative.

    1. Whatever Brady does, Brady does. I’m a Pats fan either way. Love the guy, but he’ll end up doing what he’s meant to do. Not big into the news and their drama about it, but it’s ratings .. so that’s how it goes.

Sox…eh. More drama. I don’t think they’ll have a very strong season this year, but they’ll be back. Forever a fan.

Celtics: Respect and like the team, hope they go far. Just not really a basketball fan and especially not an NBA fan these days.

Bruins forever and always my #1, win or lose, and they are doing great! I’m very happy with the season.

  8. It’s like being on a different planet down here. As an aside, large crowds this weekend due to the holiday Monday.

Its been 82F to 85F yesterday and today. At around 2pm, the clouds cleared out and it was strong, hot sunshine. At night, it currently is struggling to get below 73F for a low because the east-southeast flow is off the 80F Gulf Stream. This is keeping dewpoints near 70F. I’m never ever going to be able to look at a New England sea-breeze the same way again 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Supposed to be sunny under a strong ridge through Thursday with temps warming even a bit more. Friday is looking to have a significant cold front passage with temps to cool into the low 70s with strong N/NE winds.
