Friday Forecast

7:28AM

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 27-31)
Down the home stretch of March we come, a month that weather-wise was more like a lamb than a lion, although we’ll get a little bit of the lion’s roar before it’s over. But first, as a small storm system passes south of the region early today, many locations start with some grey sky, and even some wet weather near the South Coast, but sun will return and the breeze will pick up, though it will be milder than yesterday for most because it will be a land breeze and not a breeze off the chilly ocean like we had yesterday. The weekend starts off nice with sun giving way to clouds on Saturday, then takes a turn as low pressure heads through the Great Lakes then redevelops on its warm front just south of New England during Sunday. With high pressure holding on in eastern Canada, this set-up is cool and wet for southeastern New England, so get ready for a chilly/wet Sunday. Monday will remain somewhat unsettled as what was the original low from this system will have to come across the region as a weakening trough of low pressure (not an atypical occurrence for a low that was detoured by Canadian high pressure). By Tuesday, a bubble of this high will extended down and end the month of March on a dry but cool note, though how much sun wet see that day remains to be seen.
TODAY: Mostly cloudy start including areas of rain near the South Coast, then sun returning northwest to southeast. Highs 50-57 Cape Cod, 55-62 elsewhere. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, gusting 20-25 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 30-37. Wind N up to 10 MPH.
SATURDAY: Sun then increasing high clouds. Highs 51-58, coolest coast. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Mix/rain possible overnight. Lows 32-39. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Highs 40-47. Wind E 10-20 MPH, strongest coastal areas.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain tapering to showers/drizzle. Areas of fog. Lows 41-48. Wind NE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Highs 43-50. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 33-40. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 45-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 1-5)
Broad low pressure approaches and may impact the region April 1 into April 2 but its level of impact is uncertain. High pressure in eastern Canada may be strong enough to force a lot of it south of New England. If it is close enough for impact there may be some mix/snow involved for a portion of the time. Drier weather and on the cool side April 3-4, followed by a warm-up at the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 6-10)
A return to near to below normal temperatures with unsettled weather favoring the early to mid portion of this period.

  1. Not quite understanding some of the pollen count forecasts for Boston and MA. For the most part the state is forecasted to be in the medium-high range for today and tomorrow. The forecast for Sunday is in the high range which, given the rain prediction, seems above where it should be. The low end of the high range is 9.7 and that is also the exact number forecast for Boston.

    1. I believe those forecasts are valid at the very beginning of the day.

During the course of the day Sunday the air will be fairly thoroughly cleansed of pollen.

  2. Thank you TK. 56 in south Sutton. Just sat out for a bit. Birds sure are active, Joshua. Some bluebirds have been exploring our bluebird house. Fingers crossed we have a nesting pair this year

        1. We are at 61 closing in on 62 but still 61 confirmed by the nearby station that I also rely on but we are about to go on a bear hunt around town so will see other areas. As you know sutton varies fairly consistently between areas.

          1. 58 at Logan. Their thermostat has definitely been recalibrated. No more crazy high temps compared to the rest of SNE. More in line. 🙂

  3. Thanks TK
Sun is out where I am and another nice day to get out take a walk and get fresh air.

    1. EXACTLY! And these people are running around infecting others and so on and so on. We NEED more testing! End of rant for the day.

  4. News from Italy. NOT GOOD
AP: Italy recorded its single biggest leap in coronavirus deaths, with 969 more victims in the last 24 hours.

    1. I wonder how many of these people are being infected going to the grocery store, liquor store, bank or pharmacy? Aren’t supposed to be pretty much on lock down?

    1. Been keeping an eye on the Plains / Midwest. Some burst of early active severe weather. We’ve been in a general tornado drought overall for nearly a decade. Some of the lowest numbers we’ve seen. But eventually, that changes…

  5. JJ, JPDave, as you point out the news from Italy is horrible. Wouldn’t surprise me if Italy tops 1,000 deaths in one day at a certain point. The only glimmer of hope is that the numbers of new cases appear to sort of be stabilizing. But, because there are still close to 6,000 new cases each day and the case fatality rate is so high, Italy will continue to have really awful numbers for a while. I don’t think the Italian authorities have instituted or enforced a proper lockdown. Nor have we (I saw way too much traffic today, as well as groups of people walking and congregating in parks). The Chinese experts who’ve been sent to Milan have complained that some Italians are flouting the rules and regulations. Of course, Italy is not an authoritarian state – thank goodness – so comparing Italy to China is like comparing, I don’t know, grapefruit to onions.

Spain is also being devastated. Both Italy and Spain are seeing all-cause mortality rates attributed to Covid-19 of between 25% and 40% per day. What this means is that in a given day in Italy, up to 40% of all deaths (!) are due to Covid-19. That should tell anyone who’s paying attention that this is NOT influenza.

While our numbers rise inexorably our mortality rate continues to be more or less constant and in the 1.3% – 1.6% range. The relative rate is better than some other countries. But, we have so many more confirmed cases and so many unconfirmed cases that I’m afraid at this point that we’ll wind up having massive losses. We’ll have to wait and see.

  6. TK, I’ve been eyeing the possibility of tornadoes as well. The stubborn, sprawling cold air mass in Southern Canada combined with a surge of warmth and heat from the south could really cause some clashes in the atmosphere.

  7. Thanks TK!
Beautiful day out today, just a hair over 60. My youngest just did a zoom video conference with his 3rd grade class outside in the sun for an hour. We sure are living in a different world, I wonder if this will be the new norm. I will say it was a dose of good mental medicine for him to be able connect with his classmates.

  8. Ill be heading back to Massachusetts tomorrow, I am on a direct flight from St. Thomas to Boston to limit my exposure, the flight also has a rule of 1 person per row and providing hand sanitizer and wipes for surfaces. the Virgin Islands have 17 cases so far mainly on St. Croix but now its been increasing on St. Thomas and my parents want me home. Meanwhile I been enjoying the patio and the 70 and 80 degree weather, it seems like I am going back to typical early new England spring crap after going to the beach the other day with my room mate. we were enjoying the out doors, which I highly recommend to anyone that can to go out and do. When I return home to Mass I hope the weather turns a bit better and I can go biking. Nothing says you can’t go out and exercise, just maintain your distance from people. http://imgur.com/a/x5Wd5N6

    1. Matt your on 14 day lockdown I’m sorry to report this . Anyone flying into mass .

      1. I was already planning on a couple of days of limiting myself from family but honestly that’s great an all but how are they going to enforce that?? This is the problem with these things, you can not really enforce them.

        1. The simple answer is you don’t have to enforce them if everybody does their part, as inconvenient as that may be.

Same thing applies to trash. We can walk the streets and count cig butts, plastic covers, nip bottles, and various items by the dozens every hundred yards we travel. However if everybody that dropped these things carelessly instead held onto them until they were at a proper disposal place, we’d not have that issue either. The bottom line is: people don’t want to be responsible.

This is how easy it is. I was walking around a local pond recently, finished my bottle of water, and instead of dropping it on the ground, I took it home to my recycle bin.

The governor is asking people to practice similar distancing in the name of reducing the transmission of a virus that is indeed somewhat harmless to many but very harmful to others. It’s a pain in the butt to have to do it, but he’s also trusting people to do their part.

Our restrictions are still not nearly as harsh as some of the ones that have been put in place and worked in other countries. Hoping it doesn’t have to come to that, but it may.

          1. Yes. Matt, your a smart young man, use some common sense, social distance and depending on your parents age and if they have pre existing conditions, try to keep your distance from them, if possible.

          2. I was in no way implying I am not going to do it, im just saying for those that are not going to how are they going to be enforced, I have people over the age of 60 and my mother can have high blood pressure so I am going to limit my interactions with them for a while, though the person I am more likely to get something is my Dad who works at MGH though he has been increasing his stay at home times which is a good thing 🙂

            1. I figured you would do what is right. Just sounded a bit off. They can’t enforce. Yet. So we rely on people doing the right thing and frankly if anyone knows someone who is not..a polite reminder may work

  9. Thanks TK. The weather this month has been just spectacular. We almost take it for granted at this point. A few spots hitting 70 down here today (definitely a classic example of the spring overperforming temperature effect). Not surprisingly in light of everything going on and so many things closed, the amount of people outside in the past couple weeks has been incredible.

    1. When I have gone out walking I have kept my distance from all. I choose places that I can move enough to have 6 feet. When I know it’s going to be overly busy, I wait until later, or a different day. I was going to walk today, but after hearing the density of folks reported to me by others, I opted to hold off and perhaps go tomorrow morning early, when very few folks will be out. I don’t care about the temp, personally. I’ve walked in rain, snow, far-below-freezing temps. Yes, it’s nice today (60ish albeit very breezy) but I’ll just take stroll ’round my neighborhood a bit later to get some pics of the moon & venus at dusk. 🙂

      1. I’ll be heading out for a run shortly at my favorite local park! People I’ve seen have generally been pretty good with regards to the guidelines. Maybe not 6 feet in all cases, but I’ve seen a lot of sensible behavior.

      1. And for those who read the article I posted earlier today, members from the CDC surmise that the real number of MA residents infected is likely 10-fold what is reported because of restrictive testing. It may be more like 32,000 in MA and possibly 1,000,000 in the US.

        1. Yup, very true.

My son just spoke to a Dr. Neighbor and because my son had a really bad flu early to mid January, this Doc is virtually certain that my son had covid-19 and suggested he get an ant-body test for it as soon as he can. He now pretty much symptom free. Again No Freaking testing and he had to wait around 2 weeks not knowing. That SUCKS!

My wife had the flu in January as well, so I may be likely that she had it. If she had, likely I did as well but
virtually asymptomatic, other the a couple of days with some headaches and the chills. I never felt sick.

This non-testing SHIT is DISGUSTING!!! and should never have happened!

          1. I agree with your neighbor. I can’t tell you how many times this season I was certain that one of my patients would test positive for flu but didn’t. It could have been a false negative. Heck, it could have been a flu like illness secondary to another virus not named influenza. It’s also possible, however, that some of these patients who tested flu negative were indeed COVID infected. Scary.

                1. Arod a Couple or questions if that’s ok . First the testing that they talked about all of last week that was to pickup this week ( will we see this mega increase in testing like they said ) lastly I would just like to hear it from you though my many conversations with doctors & nurses the actual peak for this may not be until May at the earliest do you agree with this & it could be longer correct . I would like to thank you again for comments on here it’s nice that us folks here can get first hand accurate information from a health care provider. I hope your wife is managing ok I see first hand the craziness just outside there every day when I’m out back on shattuck street . Be safe

  10. I have gotten a couple “chuckles” (I’ll use that term for now)..
I’d say I’m surprised, but I’m not, at how many people take something like an electronic billboard or a sign posted near a popular walking area reminding folks to practice social distancing as an insult. But yup, people are taking it as an insult. Funny thing is, during “normal” times most of these same people wouldn’t want to get near a stranger anyway. Hypocritical behavior just so they can complain about a restriction. You know what? It’s not going to kill you to just follow it. And maybe this sounds a bit extreme, though not untrue, it may kill someone else if you don’t follow it. This is not a life sentence. It will end.

Another point I’d like to make is it’s easy to see some of these examples of holier than thou folks thinking that these temporary changes should not apply to them, and think that most people are the same. But I’m finding the opposite to be true. Most people, while wishing we didn’t have to do these things, are really having no trouble accepting them and practicing them. It’s always a few that will mess it up for others. Reminds me of the 3 class clowns in the class of 30 people that just have to act up when the teacher leaves the room but won’t fess up, so the entire class gets punished. But hey, I guess they have to feel special somehow. 😉

    1. This may be one of the saddest truths of all the memes

WE THINK DOGS ARE HARD TO TRAIN

LOOK AT ALL THE HUMANS THAT CAN’T SIT AND STAY

  11. Michigan Governor is saying same as Baker. Washington is canceling their order or PPEs. Apparently other states the same. I’m only hearing more liberal states. But perhaps they are being more vocal. The fact that cuomo is being questioned ……I can’t go on. I know the medical community is literally begging for PPEs. They are literally being issued a potential death sentence

    https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/489831-michigan-governor-challenges-trump-no-more-political-attacks-just

    1. oh you know darn well why these states are having issues getting the supplies. Did you hear the fox interview??

  12. TK – Is there flooding potential on Sunday?

My entire basement was covered with water from the last rain event. Fortunately my heating unit remained dry…VERY fortunate! March must be wetter than I thought.

    1. While the last rain event was significant, March overall has been a very dry month.

I do not anticipate any flooding issues with the next rain event.

  13. No democrats invited to the corona virus bill signing. I could have sworn an oath was taken to protect all Americans. Need further clarification of my post above. I implore any individual who is trumps base to reach out to him and ask him to stop the partisanship. He won’t listen to anyone who he thinks does not agree with him, but he may if his base starts to support all Americans.

  14. Hey Tom I just wanted you to know I kept my promise & tipped well tonight picking up dinner .

  15. Here we go, right in cue for April. Blocking and lots of crappy weather coming up. Guess the good news is that there is no baseball or soccer happening to ruin.

  16. Maybe blocking and lots of rainy days may be the only way to keep people in their homes. Could be the answer to the problem.

    1. My first thought also. Sadly, for the kids who have been able to be out in their yards enjoying play. But positively it may wash some of pollen away.

  17. Ditto on the Pollen, and I agree it’s tough for the young kids to be stuck in the house for days on end. My 9 year old is very active and loves to be outside.

    1. Agree. Although a couple of my grands were out in the drizzle the other day. It has been wonderful that weather this early has allowed kids to be out. And we sure need rain.

  18. The discussion for that area is long tracked possibly strong tornadoes. Unless things change for the better your going to see a tornado watch posted for the greater Chicago area.

  19. Was just talking to a chaser. Iowa or Illinois. I told her Illinois is probably the target area. If she sees anything the NWS will know immediately. Will be checking in with her during the day.

    Updating the forecast now…

      1. Sorry, I can’t say the same. If it were just I here, I’d be OK.
but my wife has special food needs and it is almost impossible.
It is extremely stressful for sure. We just had a delivery for yesterday that did not show. Re-ordered for tomorrow.

        1. I wouldn’t hesitate to go out and her what she needs,
but the stress of waiting around 2 weeks to get if I get
sick would be unbearable. There is a toll of families
that powers to be don’t have a clue.

          1. Due tomorrow.
My son is feeling better and wants to go out
and get us stuff. We don’t want him going out.
If the order comes tomorrow as scheduled, we’re
            fine.

            Thanks Tom.

            1. Best wishes Dave. I know this is a very tough situation for you and yours. Hang in there!

        2. Dave you are in my prayers each morning. I am so sorry you are struggling and wish there were some way to help.

  20. Well my son is more than half way through his quarantine and now my oldest daughter has tested positive. She also has mild symptoms and is self-quarantined. Tough situation because she is a part owner of some restaurants in NYC and manages one of them. They’re all closed obviously and now this. Ugh!

    1. Extending get well wishes to your children! Thank goodness they are both experiencing mild symptoms. I know this is also very financially stressful for your daughter. Let’s get her well first. Everything will fall into place.
