  1. My local report, just to put it into a local perspective for suburban folks…

04/24/2020 – As of 3 p.m. on Friday, April 24, the City of Woburn reports 135 Persons in Isolation (positive COVID-19 cases), 119 Persons out of isolation (includes 11 deaths), 69 Persons in Quarantine (close contacts) and 148 Persons out of Quarantine.
Totals to date include 254 Total COVID-19 cases, and 217 Total Quarantine Cases.

    1. Well done. I’m trying to find some too. I ordered later hair elastics and some bandannas this am for the kids

          1. I dunno. I scored some kleenex tissues and toilet paper. (I had a 4-6 weeks worth, but one never knows)

              1. I’ve been able to procure a couple of boxes of gloves and one package of masks (not great ones but still better than nothing). We are set on TP for quite a while I think. Paper towels too.

                1. I have a target subscription to paper towels every 8 weeks. This is first time target couldn’t fulfill it. Must be getting short on those

  2. The USA is moving towards 1 million cases much more quickly than I thought. By Monday, 1/3 of the world’s cases will have occurred in our country.

    1. I suspected this a week ago. Not surprised and oh btw, those modesl
that said 60,000 deaths by August that got bumped to 66.000 then 67,000.
Look for that to get bumped way up as well. Not looking good and these
deaths are occurring with mitigation strategies. Will be watching Georgia
      IF they provide accurate info.

      1. It really is.

This is something I shared on FB and I think it is something we tend to forget.

        A Tribute to our Children!

Everyone is applauding everyone, but our children!! These little heroes have stayed indoors more than they’ve ever known in their lives. Their whole worlds have literally been turned upside down. All these rules they’ve never known. A life they couldn’t have imagined. Adults talking about others becoming unwell, news reporting death after death. Our poor children’s minds must be racing. Every day they get up and carry on despite all that’s going on and all they’ve done is paint pictures and put stuff in their windows for the “heroes” out in the world. So here’s to our little heroes: today, tomorrow, forever ❤️

Copy and paste to celebrate our babies, toddlers, children and teenagers that have had to make immediate drastic changes to their lives.

For all the Children and Teens!!

  3. I heard over the air this morning that Italian researchers discovered that the virus can travel over “hundreds” of feet.

Does this mean that the “6 feet rule” means virtually nothing?

    1. I’m always skeptical about stories such as these, and I have seen many, mostly on social media. They always seem to come from either a radio or tv program or a web page that likely has an agenda to push.

Within 5 minutes yesterday on social media, one person shared a link about that drug being found to be effective, while someone else shared a link about that drug being found to be ineffective. The study they were both citing was the same one. In that case, I dismiss both of them. I want to hear it from a trusted source.

Do you recall over what air you heard that?

  4. So first this is a story about the coronavirus / air pollution thing mentioned above: https://www.timesofisrael.com/scientists-in-italy-find-coronavirus-on-air-pollution-particles/

What this means? Probably nothing new. Viruses traveling in air pollution / the environment isn’t something we didn’t necessarily know. It doesn’t necessarily mean you can get sick from it. A good article about some of this can be found here https://www.livescience.com/61689-viruses-fall-from-sky.html (although their wording isn’t great at times – the linked sources are a bit better.)

So in regards to the six feet rule – that’s still a reasonable rule of thumb. It’s been an established rule for some time. If you look up cystic fibrosis six feet on google it’s something people with CF have to adhere to all the time especially with sick people and others who have CF. It’s the bare minimum you would want to stay to protect yourself from heavy breathing and some coughs/sneezes. But an uncovered sneeze can travel about 25 feet away. This is why you hope people are wearing masks AND/OR they stifle the sneeze.

Bottom line: in this day and age it is good to wear a mask any time you go outside. This includes for walks/runs – even if you are staying socially distant. Do the best you can for yourself.

  5. Regarding sanitizing wipes – you can make your own. Bleach is very easy to find. This funny video will teach you how to make wipes that are CDC standard: https://youtu.be/9sqSnW7g9Io

If you have any empty spray bottles the same solution would do just fine and could be wiped away with paper towels.

    1. Thank you, Dr. I had looked this up earlier. We do have bleach. Years ago we had two horses at two barns, one barn had a nasty horse disease called strangles. We had to clean shoes with bleach before going into the healthy barn. It is nasty trying not to get bleach spray on everything so I’m avoiding it but may well go that route.

    2. I don’t know why, But I had a couple of extra 1/2 gallon jugs of bleach on hand that I had purchased just before all of this happened. Have not had to dip into it just yet.

Also, not for nothing, but one could always use soap and water to sanitize areas, if need be. Just make sure things get sudsy enough. It will do to surfaces exactly what it does when washing hands.

  6. I echo Eric’s sentiment here. Driving around today, traffic volume was above normal not only for a Saturday during the current era, but for any Saturday during “normal” times. It was almost comical given the notion that only “essential” workers are supposed to be out. Really not sure what we’re accomplishing by keeping parks/beaches closed at this point. IMO, time to not only open those spaces back up but encourage people to take advantage of them and ease the temptation of much higher risk indoor activities like eating and shopping, which should remain off limits.

It is really busy in metrowest today. Tons of people out. Can definitely get a sense that restraint will disappear quick when weather is reliably good.

    1. Macs cousin in Brookline said people in the city as a majority seem to respect the six foot, mask rules. I hear our purgatory chasm Park is packed again today. No idea whose responsibility it is but It sure infuriates me

    2. As for opening stores, if people can’t be respectful with them closed, how bad will they be then

        1. No worries, like I said, I think stores should remain closed. The idea that hair salons and gyms are open in Georgia seems absurd to me. But, and I know some will disagree and that is ok, I think if we take human behavior into account we need to consider a more pragmatic approach. Giving people back lower risk freedoms like access to public spaces seems like a lesser evil to me than the building frustration from being locked out of everything. There’s no easy answer though.

          1. Since people are doing this already, maybe ; but I think the problem was people from out of state. Not sure how to stop that

  7. Our immune systems have become much weaker with all of the quarantine measures in place with constant sanitizing. We are now more susceptible to getting sick and once things open up and we begin to interact many will become ill. That in combination with the furloughed health care workers is probably not a good combination.

    1. Hand sanitizers aren’t terribly bad for us in moderate use. (I can link you to a study if you’re interested.) The important part is making sure you moisturize your hands at the end of the day. I have shared your worry about it though – It’s when you dry out your hands that you are inviting viruses to live within the cracks that even a thorough handwashing might miss. This is why a good moisturizer (I use a brand called “working hands”) will help. The thicker the better. Most people who are using hand sanitizer likely aren’t doing that daily. Or even weekly. The other quarantine measure that can get people sick is the whole “safer at home” thing. Anyone who has become a virtual shut in and isn’t going out into their yard or on a deck and getting sun is harming themselves too. Vitamin D is good at combating some illnesses. A lack of it makes you more readily prone to illnesses.

    2. Yeah, so we should all just cohabitate so that thousands more die from COVID-19 just so the select few, in theory, can strengthen their immune systems. Makes a ton of sense to me.

  8. Looking for something to watch while being cooped up in the house?

Netflix has a short 6 episode series entitled: The English Game.

EXCELLENT!!! Written by Julian Fellows, writer of Downton Abby.

  9. Vicky you said you were trying to procure gloves, correct? I did a little hunting around and found these for sale online. I placed an order (because I could always use more) and it estimates my two boxes will arrive on 5/4. Didn’t want to pay for faster shipping. https://www.acehardware.com/departments/home-and-decor/cleaning-and-disinfectants/cleaning-gloves/6204408

It appears they have tissues as well: https://www.acehardware.com/departments/home-and-decor/cleaning-and-disinfectants/facial-tissues/6001110 (they might have other varieties but this was one that allowed me to add to cart. There were a few that it didn’t allow you to add to cart so I assume that means they are sold out of those.)

If I see people say “I’m still looking for X” then I will do my level best to find it for you. Just hope there aren’t too many lurkers that wind up finding the links and snapping those things up lol

    1. Thank you. I ordered gloves. I was not allowed to add Kleenex to cart so they may have sold out. But I never thought of Ace. AWESOME. and greatly appreciated.

  10. Keith – curious what you don’t like about the masks you purchased. Did you buy them online or in person? One store in crow point was selling those blue medical masks in zip lock bags. 10 in a bag for 19 bucks. Was thinking of reporting them for price gouging (richdales in crow point.)

    1. I’ve got mish mosh of masks. I’ve 4 Nano masks (with disposable inserts of which I have about 30 of)…I purchased these when I worked in health care during the Avian Flu pandemic. I also purchased 4 N100’s back in January which are supposed to be even better than N95’s…those are for when the Zombie Apocalypse happens :). I’ve also got about 6 N95’s left (also from the Avian Flu days)…I had more but the dating on them was old and I tossed long before COVID. I just got a package of 50 cheaper surgical masks and those are the ones I’m not happy with….but in a pinch they’ll do. Some of my contacts in the business have been trying to get them for themselves and are having a difficult time of it.

      1. I have a few n95 masks as well. I’ve got 3 nano masks and some disposable inserts – I’ve been reading up on how to fashion disposable inserts out of kirby HEPA vacuum bag filters (since they are safe and don’t have fiberglass involved and tout filtration about as good as n95) for when I run out. Re cheaper surgical masks – 1 box of 50 goes for about $35 bucks at a store relatively near us and isn’t sold out. (They only sell “1 per family”) Ryanandrewkinder at Gmail is where you can ping me for that info – wouldn’t want random people from the public headed there and panic buying all the stock from this particular place. (I know 35 is much higher than what it should go for but it’s not as price gouged as most places.) Wish.com also has those types of surgical masks for far cheaper but it’s a gamble on quality and you’d be waiting a month (they come from china which is where most of these masks are made and come from anyway.)
