Wet Wednesday, Then Clearer Sailing

3:11AM

Low pressure will bring periods of rain to southern New England today. High pressure will build down from the north  Thursday through the coming weekend, with mainly dry weather but a lack of summer heat as the air will be coming from the Maritimes of Canada and also modified at times by the nearby Atlantic waters.

Briefly Wetter, Then Getting Better

2:46AM

A little reverse on the title of a recent blog, because this time we have wet weather coming in for a relatively short time during midweek before high pressure returns fair weather to the region late in the week. The wet weather will be caused by a slow-moving front that comes in from the west tonight through Wednesday night, lingering into Thursday, with an area of low pressure forming on it to the south, eventually drifting to east with time.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

The Week Ahead

1:38AM

High pressure noses southward across New England today then slides eastward a little on Tuesday, finally retreating northeastward into southeastern Canada as unsettled weather moves in from the south and west at midweek. High pressure regains control late in the week. This outlook is pretty much unchanged from the previous post.

Quiet Battle

4:47PM

The next several days will see a quiet battle of high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south. A weak boundary with a disturbance moving along it has really only been able to produce some clouds across western and southern New England during the day Saturday, but these have battled drier air trying to press in from the north and plenty of sun has been enjoyed in much of the forecast area. This high pressure area will win the battle Sunday through Tuesday, and it will press far enough south so that winds that will be mainly north to east on Sunday will turn more southerly by late Monday and Tuesday. By midweek, low pressure will start to win out for a couple days as a frontal system moves in and provides an avenue to bring some moisture into the region. High pressure will again push the unsettled stuff back to the south at the end of the week.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low ranging through the 50s, coolest inland valleys and mildest near the coast. Wind light E to SE.

MONDAY: Sunny. High from 70 immediate coast to 80 well inland. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 70 coast to 80 inland.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Low 60. High 75.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Low 59. High 73.

FRIDAY: Slow clearing. Low 56. High 75.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 58. High 78.

Nice Weekend Coming Up

4:44PM

We continue under the influence of low pressure and cold air aloft as more showers and thunderstorms have popped up during the day today. These will fade with the setting sun, only to re-fire tomorrow as the atmosphere continues to be unstable. A pair of weak disturbances will pass across northern New England during the day Saturday then just south of New England Saturday night. At this point, these don’t look like they will have a big impact, perhaps a shower or thunderstorm Saturday night in a few locations. Drier, warmer weather Sunday through early next week will be the result of building high pressure.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy in the evening with diminishing showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy to mostly clear but patchy ground fog forming overnight. Low 50-55. Wind S to SW under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy early with a few lingering showers possible, then partly cloudy. Patchy valley fog. Low 53-58. Wind light SW.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. High 75-80. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. High 73-78. Wind N 10-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny. Low 58. High 70 coast to 80 inland.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 61. High 82.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. PM showers and thunderstorms. Low 64. High 83.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Low 66. High 77.

One Step At A Time

3:51PM

Low pressure will still be in control through Thursday but slight improvement will be showing each day, in the form of less ocean drizzle/showers and more breaks in the clouds. This will allow instability showers and thunderstorms to fire up well inland, however. Once we get by this, it looks like a warmer, drier pattern will take over starting about Friday and lasting into the start of next week.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers and patches of drizzle. Low 48-53. Wind N under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers early. Low 50-55. Wind light variable.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms especially inland during the afternoon. High middle 60s coast to middle 70s far inland. Wind NE-N 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 57. High 77.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 58. High 79.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 60. High 81.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 62. High 83.

The Week Ahead

12:00AM

Boston MA and Seattle WA will be twins on opposite coasts Monday, both having a high temperature in the lower to middle 50s with wet weather. Boston’s soaker will be caused by continued influence of broad upper level low pressure and a couple of surface lows (one going out south of New England and another one backing down the coast from Maine and joining the other). In addition, minor to moderate coastal flooding is likely around the times of high tide, especially the Monday night high tide which will be astronomically high. The entire circulation will then sink south and east through midweek, and it will take much of the week to finally work out of its influence. The wettest weather of Monday will ease slightly Tuesday then moreso during the Wednesday-Friday period, but as more and more breaks in the clouds take place that will only set the stage for afternoon showers and thunderstorms to develop over inland locations mid to late week. Looking ahead to the weekend, further improvement and a warm-up should take place.

Forecast for southeastern NH, eastern MA, and RI…

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Periods of drizzle and light rain. Areas of fog. High 55-60. Wind N 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Low 49. High 65.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers/t-storms inland. Low 54. High 69.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers/t-storms inland. Low 56. High 71.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Low 58. High 73.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Low 61. High 78.

Briefly Better, Then Getting Wetter

3:30AM

Upper level low pressure will continue to dominate the Northeast well into next week. But a drier slot of air at the surface will provide a little bit of a break for today after yesterday’s very wet and cool day. Some sunshine today will boost temperatures into the 70s but the air will be unstable enough that some showers and thunderstorms may pop up during the afternoon. This brief break will be short lived, as the entire upper level low will shift southeastward and pull the moisture from today back down across southern New England Monday, which will turn out to be a very wet and chilly day. Improvement after this will be very slow heading through midweek.

Forecast for eastern MA, southeastern NH, and RI… (Update as of 11:25AM)

THIS AFTERNOON: Most sun in RI and adjacent MA but more sun trying to work further north and east into eastern MA and southern NH with time, though lots of clouds and a few patches of drizzle continue in these areas for a time. More clouds returning from the west later and a slight chance of a few showers or even an isolated thunderstorm late day. High 72-77 but 60s Cape Cod and Islands. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy in the evening with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Overcast overnight with rain and drizzle developing. Low 50-55. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Overcast with rain and drizzle. High 53-58. Wind NE 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of light rain and drizzle. Low 50. High 61.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and drizzle. Low 53. High 66.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of showers. Low 55. High 70.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 59. High 74.

Great Friday, Then A Visit From 2009

8:28AM

Some of you will get the 2009 reference above. For those who don’t, the weather from Saturday through the middle of  next week will remind you of the weather pattern we had in June (and July) of 2009. But before we get there, what a splendid day today will be. High pressure hanging on will provide bright sun much of the day though some high & mid level clouds will start to move in toward the end of the day from the west, and a few low clouds from the ocean may cross Cape Cod and the Islands. Also an east wind will keep it on the cooler side, especially at the coast, but not so cool that it isn’t enjoyable for most people.

Instead of going into great day by day detail, I’ll just sum up the coming several days this way: Not a great weather pattern, as we probably don’t get enough rain to erase the precipitation deficit, and not great weather for outdoor activities. You can blame this on a blocking pattern (similar to one we see in winter and early spring) that will hold upper level low pressure over the Northeast from this weekend well into next week. It won’t rain all the time, and we may even see a little sun here and there (especially for a while Sunday) but we’ll also see episodes of showers and drizzle, along with below normal temperatures.
