That’s Spring!

10:40PM

50 in Boston, 80 in Fitchburg at the same time this afternoon. 46 in Boston, 77 in North Adams at the same time this evening. That’s Spring in New England, and these contrasts are especially pronounced when you have a very warm air mass trying to move in, and being met with resistance from a still-cold North Atlantic Ocean. You don’t need me to tell you how cold the ocean still is if you  live near the water today, and were under a bank of low clouds & fog with chilly air, as areas well inland felt a bit like summer…

So, what’s coming up? Not quite an exact repeat Wednesday, but some similarities. The warm air will start to win out in more areas than it did on Tuesday, so areas that stayed in the 50s today will warm at least to the 60s tomorrow, with some reaching 70 or higher, provided the wind is not blowing with some trajectory off the water. I believe that shower activity will be minimized tomorrow, but cannot be completely ruled out. The main action will still be well west of New England with a cold front. This front is expected to cross the region during Thursday, which will be a warm day pretty much everywhere, but with a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Later this week, expect a cool-down, but not with total sunshine, as a pool of chilly air has to cross the region from west to east. This usually means some cloud development, and we will probably see that both Friday & Saturday. And it’s still several days out, but Sunday looks like it will turn out nice.

Details for the Boston area…

Monday Evening Update

7:25PM

A frontal system will continue to oscillate back and forth over New England during the next couple days. This setup makes for a tricky forecast since there is a very warm air mass just south of the front, and it is much cooler to the north of it. And we also can’t forget the chilly ocean sitting next to us. Instead of launching into why I think the Boston area will be stuck in the cooler air Tuesday and finally bust into the warmer air Wednesday, and then why I think some areas may reach 80 Thursday because a final cold front from the west will be delayed in arriving (until that night sometime), let’s just go ahead and look at the details of what I expect for Metro Boston (and areas not too far away) for the next several days, including a peek at the coming weekend. My apologies for the run-on sentence. 🙂

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy along and south of the Mass Pike early, mostly cloudy to the north. Generally cloudy all areas later at night. Showers and thunderstorms traveling west to east across southern NH and extreme northern MA later at night (most should stay out of the city of Boston though there is a risk of a few brief showers there). Areas of fog, some locally dense. Low 45 to 55, coolest over eastern NH, mildest in the southwest suburbs of Boston. Wind variable up to 10 mph.

TUESDAY: Areas of fog, some dense, mainly before 8:00AM, otherwise cloudy. Isolated showers possible. Chance of drizzle in coastal areas from Boston northward. High 50 to 60, coolest along coastal areas north of Boston, mildest in Boston’s southwestern suburbs. Wind NE 5 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 45 to 55 from northeast to southwest across the region. Wind variable up to 10 mph becoming S to SW 10 to 15 mph toward dawn.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers possible. High 65 to 70. Wind S 10 to 20 mph.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Low 50 to 55. Wind SSW 10 to 20 mph.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. High 75 to 80. Wind SW 15 to 25 mph. Showers/thunderstorms at night.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 51. High 64.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Low 44. High 61.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 42. High 63.

The Week Ahead

A frontal system is oscillating back and forth over the Northeast. This will continue for the next few days. On Saturday we were on the chilly side. Today, Easter Sunday, we were on the warm side here in the Boston area. Tomorrow, we will find ourselves back on the chilly side again. The front is expected to push further north putting the Boston area into the warm air again Tuesday, only to sink back to the south and return the cooler ocean air Wednesday, but yet another northward push on Thursday will return the region to the warm air. A cold front coming in from the west should produce showers and thunderstorms before pushing the whole see-saw system out of the region. High pressure will try to build in at the very end of the week with mainly dry weather.

Detailed forecast for the Boston area…

TODAY: Cloudy. A few periods of light rain. High 45 to 50 coast, 50 to 55 inland. Wind light NE.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Low 43 to 48. Wind light variable becoming S.

TUESDAY: Cloudy to partly sunny. High 68 to 73. Wind S to SW 10 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Low 55 to 60. Wind SW 5 to 10 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of drizzle. Temperature falling through the 50s. Wind NE 10 to 15 mph.

THURSDAY: PM showers & thunderstorms. Low 49. High 71.

FRIDAY: Isolated showers. Low 50. High 64.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Low 48. High 60.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 43. High 63.

Weekend Tweak

1:45AM

Good morning all! This is a quick update of the Boston Area Forecast. Not much of a new discussion this time, since there are no major changes in the overall thinking layed out yesterday, just some tweaks for timing and tracks of systems during the forecast period, yielding the following forecast…

THURSDAY: Chance of showers. Low 55. High 68.

Forecast Refresh

12:15AM

For those that celebrate, Easter Weekend (or Good Friday through Easter Sunday) has arrived. Will the weather cooperate? For the most part, the answer is yes. Two dry days will surround one wet one. And as it stands, the wet one (Saturday) won’t be all that wet. After the windy day Thursday which saw mixed sun/clouds & even a few sprinkles, we have seen a clear and cold night as winds dropped off. High clouds ahead of the Saturday system will spill across the sky at times on Friday, dimming the sun. Some scattered lower fair weather clouds may also develop, so it will not be a completely sunny day. An ocean wind will keep temperatures rather cool. This cool weather will continue Saturday, which will be a cloudier day. Episodes of rain are possible, especially in the afternoon into the night. The frontal system responsible for the Saturday unsettled weather will stall just offshore Sunday, but there should be enough dry air working in to result in at least a little sun at times, along with milder temperatures for Easter.

The details for the Boston area with a peek into next week as well…

TODAY: Partly sunny. High 50 to 55 but holding in the 40s right along the shore. Wind E 5 to 15 mph.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 35 to 40. Wind E 5 to 10 mph.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of a period of very light rain or snow during the morning. Periods of rain and a few embedded heavier showers possible during the afternoon. High 50 to 55. Wind SE 10 to 20 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Periods of rain in the evening. Areas of fog. Low 45 to 50. Wind SW 5 to 15 mph.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. High 60 to 65. Wind W 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY: Chance of showers. Low 48. High 56.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 48. High 68.

WEDNESDAY: Chance of showers. Low 52. High 71.

THURSDAY: AM showers. PM clearing. Low 50. High 66.

Wind Blows The Dry Air Back In

10:55PM

Low pressure pulls away from the region Thursday as high pressure builds toward the area from the west. Between the two will blow some gusty winds, but with fair weather. High pressure builds overhead on Friday providing tranquil weather for Good Friday / Earth Day. The weather pattern continues to support progressive weather systems, and the next disturbance is expected to arrive Saturday bringing showers with it. A bubble of high pressure may clear the area out somewhat for Easter Sunday, but this is uncertain as it is difficult to time disturbances in this pattern.

For now, the details as I see them for the Boston area…

OVERNIGHT: Slow clearing but areas of fog. Low 38 to 43. Wind SW under 10 mph shifting to W and increasing to 10 to 20 mph.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. High 54 to 59. Wind W 15 to 30 mph gusting around 40 mph at times.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 32 to 37. Wind NW 10 to 15 mph gusting over 20 mph.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. High 58 to 63. Wind N 5 to 15 mph.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Low 39 to 44. Wind N to NE under 10 mph.

SATURDAY: Cloudy. Rain developing midday and afternoon. High 48 to 53. Wind NE to E 10 to 20 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy with rain in the evening. Mostly cloudy with areas of fog and a chance of showers overnight. Low 43 to 48. Wind E 10 to 15 mph shifting to S and diminishing.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny in the morning. Partly to mostly cloudy in the afternoon. High 61 to 66. Wind SW 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY: AM rain/drizzle. PM showers. Low 46. High 56.

TUESDAY: Chance of rain. Low 43. High 54.

WEDNESDAY: Chance of showers. Low 51. High 72.

Monday Night Update

11:11PM

The weather during the day Monday was as expected. It was breezy with sun dominating the early part of the day, clouds dominating later. During this evening, a disturbance has been moving through with scattered showers. These will be moving out overnight. From here on, there is not a great deal of change in thinking from the discussion posted on the last blog. There is greater confidence that we will stay in the cooler airmass through Wednesday. The greatest chance for heaviest rain will be during the 2nd half of Wednesday as low pressure makes its approach. I don’t have much to add at this point about later in the week so the forecast remains essentially unchanged.

Here’s an updated Boston area forecast…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers ending. Low 41 to 46. Wind N 5 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of drizzle or very light rain. High 49 to 54. Wind NE 10 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of light rain and drizzle. Low 43 to 48. Wind NE 10 to 15 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of light rain and drizzle into mid afternoon then an increasing chance of steadier/heavier rain later. High 49 to 54. Wind E 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

THURSDAY: Chance of showers. Low 41. High 57.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 39. High 61.

SATURDAY: Chance of showers. Low 44. High 58.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 43. High 63.

The Week Ahead

10:45PM

With the wild wind & rain & thunder of Saturday night & early Sunday behind us, it’s now time to look ahead at the weather for the week ahead, which for many will be quite busy in one form or another (Patriots Day & Boston Marathon, Good Friday, Easter Sunday). What’s mother nature going to send our way for these days and the others? Read on for my thoughts…

Tonight… A disturbance is sending another batch of clouds into the region and scattered rain showers may occur during the overnight hours, but this activity will be gone by dawn.

Monday (Patriots Day / Boston Marathon / Red Sox)… A big whirlpool of chilly air aloft (the upper low associated with the storm of Saturday night and the lingering showers of Sunday) will continue to spin as it passes north of US, moving eastward across southeastern Canada. An area of drier air will be passing over us during the day Monday, keeping the weather settled, temperatures fairly mild, and providing a tail wind for marathon runners, though a bit gusty. Conditions will also be favorable for Patriots Day festivities and the Red Sox game at Fenway from late morning through early afternoon. Fair weather clouds will develop by mid morning and may cover at least half the sky at times by late morning, keeping this from being a sunny day. Also, a disturbance approaching from the west will send some clouds into the region during the afternoon but any shower activity should hold off until the night.

Tuesday… A warm front will be located south of us, and high pressure building across southern Canada will turn winds into the northeast in the cooler airmass north of this warm front. Clouds will rule the day and temperatures will be fairly chilly as the northeast wind comes in off the still-cold North Atlantic. Some periods of rain and/or drizzle may develop as the warm air to the south overrides the chilly air over us.

Wednesday… It’s a wildcard day with the major question being whether or not that warm front pushes north of the Boston area, getting us into the warm airmass. That would mean a significant warm up along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. However, current indications are that the front will have trouble pushing this far north and the cool and damp air will win out. This would mean a day similar to Tuesday, though an approaching disturbance later in the day could enhance any rainfall in the region. This cool and damp to eventually wet scenario is what I am leaning toward at the moment.

Thursday… Low pressure and a cold front will sweep through the region early, clearing out the unsettled weather of Tuesday & Wednesday, though an upper level low may still promote some cloudiness and a few showers, so at this point I cannot forecast a sunny day here.

Friday (Earth Day / Good Friday)… At the moment, this looks like the best day of the week, with high pressure overhead.

Saturday… The next disturbance in a rather progressive jet stream pattern should arrive with clouds and a chance of rain or showers.

Sunday (Easter)… Confidence is low, being so far out into the future. But for now I will play the optimistic card, and go with fair and mild weather, as I believe the disturbance of Saturday will be gone and high pressure will be moving in. Of course, I’ll be updating the weekend forecast as we get closer to it.

Wild Night

4:30 PM

Storm moving in! A potent low (the one responsible for all the severe weather the last few days in the Midwest & South) will be moving through tonight & Sunday. Though we won’t see the extent of the severe weather other places unfortunately experienced, we will see heavy rain, strong wind, and possibly some thunder overnight tonight & early Sunday morning as this low passes northwest of New England and drags a strong frontal system through this area.

Visit our friends at the National Weather Service for a list of watches, warnings, and advisories in effect for tonight’s storm:

http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/box/

The good news is, behind this system is a batch of dry, mild air, that will be over us on Monday, Patriots Day, producing favorable conditions for runners in the Boston Marathon as well as great baseball weather at Fenway for the Red Sox. Hopefully the Sox will provide us with great baseball………

Beyond Monday, the active pattern continues and a frontal system will be in the region Tuesday into midweek, providing several opportunities for showers and somewhat variable temperatures, depending on where the frontal boundary is. For the moment, I am going to use the European Model has my main source of guidance in terms of timing, and my own feelings about details, so anything from Tuesday on is subject to change.

This outlook will peek a bit further than usual out to give you an idea of what I expect next weekend for those observing Good Friday & Easter Sunday.

Here are the details for the Boston area…

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of rain early. Rain, heavy at times, after midnight, including the chance of thunderstorms. Temperature holding in the middle 40s most of the night but may rise toward dawn. Friday Forecast

12:15AM

New England will live up to its reputation of changing weather in the days ahead. An active jet stream is sending storm systems through every few days, but with breaks of nice weather in between. This is about as close to “text book weather” as we can get. Will the Boston Marathon (Monday April 18) fall on one of the storm days or one of the fair weather days? Read on to find that out, along with the weather for the other days during the coming week, which is a school vacation week for many!

April Rain

12:30 AM

An apology for not updating sooner, since there is a change in the timing of the coming rain. Computer problems… On a backup now! Everything else should be back to normal in a few days.

Quick Discussion…

Cold front moves through the region early today and slows down just offshore. Low pressure moves up along the front bringing a soaking rain tonight & Wednesday. High pressure builds in behind this storm Thursday with drier weather, which will last through Friday. Another storm moves in over the weekend with more wet weather, timing favoring late Saturday & Sunday.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 45. High 59.

SATURDAY: Cloudy. PM rain. Low 46. High 52.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. AM rain. PM showers. Low 48. High 54.

The Week Ahead

8:55 PM

Let’s be realistic. It’s not going to be a stellar week ahead. While it is true there will be some warm temperatures early in the week, keep in mind it is just April, the ocean nearby is cold, and ’tis the season for cut-off low pressure systems. The latter will likely come into play after our warmer start to the week.

For those interested in what’s causing the weather…

A warm front will very slowly push across New England through Monday. Energy moving southeastward on the eastern side of a high pressure ridge (which brought warm to hot weather to the middle of the US the past few days) and warm air overriding the relatively cooler air over us will result in showers and thunderstorms tonight into Monday. As the warm front edges northeastward, these showers and storms will taper from southwest to northeast. Temperatures will never reach the 80s Monday, but will remain in the 60s near the coast while reaching the 70s inland as southwest winds increase. The immediate shore will be coolest as winds will take the longest to shift to south there. The South Coast of New England will remain in the 50s as the wind will be more directly off the water. Those areas may see low clouds and areas of fog much of the day Monday.

Low pressure passing well north of New England will drag a cold front and a couple low pressure troughs through the region Tuesday. Winds will shift to west then eventually north and these disturbances will be accompanied by scattered showers. Temperatures will remain mild on Tuesday.

Winds are expected to shift more to the northeast as low pressure develops along the cold front, as it slows down while moving offshore, Tuesday night & Wednesday. Although I am not sure of precise timing, I do expect this low pressure system to become cut off from the jet stream, meandering northward into New England later Wednesday and Thursday. This will bring unsettled weather and cooler temperatures. This is in disagreement with some of the fair weather midweek forecasts you may have heard, but this is how I feel it will play out right now.

This system should lift out of the region by Friday, but will make way for yet another low pressure system to bring additional unsettled weather sometime during next weekend. That’s Spring in New England.

For those who just want to know what it’s gonna do around Boston…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. More humid. Showers and a chance of thunderstorms, most numerous after midnight. Any thunderstorms could produce downpours as well as frequent lightning. Low 45 to 50. Wind SE to S 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely in the morning. Partly sunny with isolated showers in the afternoon. Highs ranging from near 60 along the immediate coast to near 75 well  inland. Wind S to SW increasing to 15 to 25 mph with gusts around 30 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Low 55 to 60. Wind SW 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

Weekend Update

4:20 PM

As another marathon baseball game goes on at Fenway (hopefully the Sox pull it out though it’s not looking great as of the writing of this blog) and a the final home game of the regular season wraps up for the Bruins with a win over Ottawa, a beautiful day is ongoing in the Boston area, thanks to high pressure over the region. This high will begin to give way, however, as low pressure moves toward the Great Lakes, pushing a warm front into the region later Sunday into Monday. Clouds and showers will accompany this front.

The question for the last several days is how warm will it get on Monday… Well up to this point, the blog I wrote a couple days back about what I expect to happen pretty much holds true to what I am still thinking. So without repeating the entire thing here, I will say that it will certainly warm up Monday, but that the summery temperatures will be confined to areas well away from the coast (the East Coast may see delayed warming due to the front being stubborn to clear the area, and clouds lingering, and the South Coast will have a wind more off the water south of New England).

A cold front will sweep through the region from west to east Monday night & early Tuesday, but will slow down offshore. A series of troughs behind this front and some upper level energy hanging along the coast will likely keep clouds and a shower threat going through Tuesday. Clouds may even linger into midweek, depending on positioning of high pressure and proximity of an upper level low pressure area cut off from the jet stream not far south and east of New England. For this reason, the wording of the detailed forecast will be a little more generalized, until I can pin down how things will play out.

Boston Area Forecast…

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Low 38 to 43. Wind S under 10 mph.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. High 50 to 55. Wind S to SE 5 to 15 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers likely. Low 45 to 50. Wind SE 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY: Cloudy with showers likely early. Mostly cloudy to partly sunny from mid morning on.
