  1. Good morning and yet another day with covid.

Doc, happy you finally got your new cpap. What kind did you get?
Mine is a ResMed AirSense 10 and it comes with a cool mobile app that gives you all sorts of stats, including a daily score
on how well the machine/mask is working.

    Re: Extinction Level Event
Call me an alarmist, but here is my concern:

All Scientists and Medical Staff now have come to the conclusion that herd immunity is not possible. Previously they all thought it was.
Most are of the opinion now that covid will always be around and we will treat it like the flu. We’ll all got a shot each year and hope for the best.
Scientist thought that the vaccines would provide great protection, but now we are seeing alarming rates of break through infections.

My concern is about future mutations of covid. What will they bring?

As long as future mutations are not any more deadly, then the above assumption holds, however, if future mutations become more and more deadly and become more efficient at avoiding anti-bodies, then all bets are off.

To me, not to consider that possible eventuality is a sad act
    of denial.

I sure hope that is not the case. I am NOT predicting it, just
pointing out that it is, indeed, on the table.

    Cheers

    1. I got my prescription – not a new cpap yet. I have to figure out how to pay my mechanic that big bill and then I can consider getting a new machine. I’ve reverted back to just using the dreamstation for now until I can afford a new one or insurance tells me a company that has one. I want a resmed based on everyone’s reviews of it. I just can’t foot a bill like that right now. (about $1k out of pocket.)

      1. So sorry to hear that. Your insurance doesn’t cover it at all, not even partial. I am so sorry.

Btw, at least as of 2 weeks ago, the company I used still
had ResMed units. I can’t speak to right now.

        Best of luck.

    1. I have been hearing that Moderna offers better protection
against break through infections. I don’t know how true that is.
Has anyone seen any data? thanks

  2. Real-world evidence from the UK indicates what may be the best we can hope for: A significantly weakened, but not severed link between cases and hospitalizations/deaths.

    – Since April 2021 there have been 2,517,116 recorded cases of Covid in the UK. Same period shows 62,036 hospital admissions & 6,207 deaths.
    – Previous 2.5 million cases between December 2020 and March 2021 shows 214,032 hospital admissions & 62,543 deaths.

In the UK, vaccines appear to have lowered admissions by 71% and deaths by 90%.

Important caveat: Better testing (3x what we do) in the UK leads to earlier detection and treatment. In turn, this saves many lives. Many in the U.S. don’t get their first Covid test until they’re in the hospital. This and the fact that our population suffers from worse underlying health conditions explains our higher death rate.

  3. Feeling just fine so far. I didn’t even wake up to any arm stiffness like last time. I will continue to monitor though in case I feel differently tomorrow. You never know. Thanks for asking Vicki.

    1. The good news on Lambda and Mu is that Delta out-competes. This is probably a function of transmissibility. Do we want to have Delta around? No. But it’s preferred to Lambda and Mu, as these are probably more vaccine-evasive.

  4. Florida today:

1,338 additional deaths reported. This is the largest single day report for a state ever. Does it include a data dump from the weekend? Yes. Still, the 7-day average number of daily deaths in Florida (~360) is 3.5 times more than the UK, with 4 times fewer people.

To me, the number that stood out to me was the number of daily cases, which is plateauing around 20k. Today it was 21,392. That is way too many.

      1. I vote to sever Texas and Florida from our map….for the record, Disney is THE very favorite of my girls. Anyone want to provide refuge for me 🙂

    1. 25-50 million died between 1918-1920 during the spanish flu pandemic. If the past is anything to learn from – and it ALWAYS is – things can get worse before they get better. (Population in 1918 was 1.8 billion. Now we have 7.8 billion.)
