Drier Heat Today, Humidity Returns Sunday

8:53AM

You’ll notice a difference today. A hot day, but much drier than yesterday, and with a nice breeze from the west. But humidity will be back Sunday and Monday as we remain on the northeastern edge of a major heatwave and disturbances riding along it play with the “humidity switch”.  By Tuesday, expect to be back into some drier air again, and a little less heat, lasting through midweek and including Independence Day. Disturbances are most likely to cause shower and thunderstorm threats early Sunday morning and during the day Monday, based on current timing.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TODAY: Sunshine but filtered to dimmed for a while later morning through early afternoon by a period of high &  middle clouds. Hot but not that humid. Heat Blast

7:23AM

A disturbance passes through from west northwest to east southeast this morning and a second one approaches late today producing only slight chances for showers or thunderstorms, and an even lesser one does the same thing on Sunday. Both today and Sunday will turn out hot and humid, and though it will still be hot on Saturday it will be less humid.

The heat will ease early  next week as the jet stream dips a little to the south, but a disturbance passing by on Monday may set of a few more showers and thunderstorms.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

Low Lifts Out, Summer Drifts In

2:10AM

Low pressure will move away from New England leaving behind a westerly flow and more summery weather for the next several days. The region will find itself on the edge of a large area of hot weather to the south and west, and the only chance of wet weather will be from a few showers and storms associated with weak disturbances moving through, which will be hard to time.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TODAY: Partly cloudy. High 80-85 except 70s Cape Cod. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Low 60-65. Wind WSW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. High 85-90. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 67. High 89.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 68. High 88.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Low 65. High 83.

WEDNESDAY – INDEPENDENCE DAY: Partly cloudy. Low 65. High 83.

Whirlpooling

3:37PM

Southern New England is under the influence of a whirlpool of low pressure from the surface to the upper atmosphere and this will only slowly pull away during the next few days. As it starts to lift northeastward, a northerly wind flow at the surface will turn more westerly allowing a slow moderating trend in temperature. A chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue, especially during the afternoon hours, due to the instability with the low, through Thursday.

By Friday and the weekend, a more zonal (west to east) flow in the jet stream will allow for a much warmer and mainly fair period of weather, with only a small disturbance causing a risk of a few showers late Friday night into Saturday morning.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

THROUGH 6PM: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms most likely in Essex County and from near Boston through southeastern MA including Cape Cod. Any storms may produce gusty winds, brief downpours, briefly frequent lightning, and small hail. Temperatures ranging from the middle 60s to lower 70s, dropping toward 60 in storms. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

EVENING (6PM TO SUNSET): Variably cloudy with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures 60-65. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy with isolated showers ending. Low 55-60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Low 68. High 82.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 64. High 83.

The Week Ahead

7:18AM

A front crossing the region today will get bogged down as upper level low pressure drops in and spins around for a few days, holding unsettled weather in the area into midweek, similar to the pattern we have seen a few times during this month.

Later this week, this upper low will lift out and a more west to east flow will take over, with a more typical summertime pattern resulting.

Heat Ending

5:22PM

Short Term (through evening ): Thunderstorm threat continues through tonight in eastern MA, RI, and southern NH, though I don’t expect any widespread severe weather. Any storms that do occur could cause torrential rain and frequent lightning. Through early evening, most of this activity will occur in RI, with isolated showers and storms popping up elsewhere.

Tonight: A cold front will slowly push across the region from west to east with more widespread showers and thunderstorms, some of which will produce heavy rain and local street flooding. Not expecting severe weather from this either (damaging wind, large hail).

Saturday: With a cold front sitting just offshore, clouds will dominate to start, then a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon, with the atmosphere unstable enough to run the risk of some pop up showers and thunderstorms, primarily during the 2PM to 6PM time frame. Drier air pushing in at night will put an end to any of this.

Sunday: High pressure will be in control at the surface, with upper level low pressure to the north. This will result in a fair, comfortable day, with most clouds popping up over the mountains to the north, leaving the forecast area with lots of sun.

Early to mid next week: Upper level low pressure will extend a lobe southward and a disturbance coming along will cause unsettled weather Monday, with a break Tuesday as a drier slot  air moves in. Additional clouds will be around at midweek with a minimal shower threat as the upper low hangs around for a couple extra days.

Detailed forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

THROUGH SUNSET: Partly to mostly cloudy. Isolated showers and thunderstorms except more numerous activity moving across RI and southeastern MA. Temperatures in the 80s to lower 90s but falling back into the 70s where rain occurs. Wind SW 5-15 MPH but variable and gusty around any storms.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Low 65-70. Wind variable to W mostly under 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy in the morning. Partly sunny with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High 75-80. Wind variable to N around 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 60-65 except 50s some interior valleys. Wind light variable.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. High 78-83. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Cloudy. PM showers/thunderstorms. Low 62. High 74.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 58. High 75.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers. Low 58. High 75.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 61. High 74.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 61. High 81.

Record Heat Today, Thunderstorms Friday

3:05AM

High pressure aloft and a west northwest wind at the surface will be the perfect setup for record heat today, along with significant humidity, though it may become slightly drier than yesterday. It should be mainly dry though a few  isolated air mass thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, especially in southern NH to northeastern MA in the evening or night.

Friday, a cold front will approach from the west, but it will still be hot and humid during the day. Thunderstorms will develop during the day as this front pushes into the hot and humid air mass. The coverage and strength of the storms is not completely known, but there will be the potential for strong to possibly severe storms in some locations. The storm threat will continue for at least part of Friday night.

Saturday, the front will have pushed through but be just offshore, with lingering clouds for at least the first half of the day, and still the threat of a few more showers and thunderstorms (though do not look for them to be widespread). The air will be somewhat cooler.

Sunday, a sliver of high pressure will provide a dry and comfortably mild to warm day, the pick of the weekend.

The first half of next week will be somewhat unsettled and cooler as upper level low pressure dominates the weather.

Heat Blast Inbound

5:55PM

The marine layer’s time is running out here in eastern MA and nearby areas. During the next 24 hours, a southwesterly flow will overtake the area, marking the beginning of a several-day bout of summer weather, if you include tomorrow, the transition day. A few areas have a shot at an official heat wave (3 or more days of 90+ high temps) Wednesday through Friday, if they manage to eek out a 90 on  Friday.  The timing of a cold front that will end the heat blast is still in question: Early Friday? Later Friday? Trying to pin that down but for now am going to go with the earlier timing still….

The weekend? Far away still, but early indications are for cooler (but not too chilly) behind the cold front, and mainly dry. We may have to deal with a disturbance causing some showers  by the end of the weekend, but this may just as easily hold off til the start of next week.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TONIGHT: Low clouds return. Patchy fog forms. Lows in the 50s, coolest inland valleys. Wind SE under 10 MPH shifting to SW.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear early then areas of low clouds and patchy fog forming again. Lows in the 60s, coolest inland valleys. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs from the upper 80s to middle 90s. Wind WSW 10-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Low 70. High 95.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered thunderstorms. Low 70. High 88.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 60. High 80.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Showers at night. Low 60. High 80.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 63. High 76.

The Week Ahead

10:36PM

High pressure northeast of New England will keep the region marine-air-modified for one more day before slipping off to the south Tuesday through midweek, allowing a southwesterly flow and a building upper level ridge to throw summer into the area, right on schedule! Heat will build especially Wednesday and Thursday, with some record high temperatures being challenged especially Thursday. Thursday night and Friday morning, a cold front will cross the region (going with quicker timing at this point). This will dry the air out and cool it down very slightly on Friday and a little moreso over the weekend as an elongated upper level trough moves into the region.

Updated forecast for the next 7 days for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

OVERNIGHT: Areas of low clouds and patchy fog. Low from the upper 40s deep valleys to the middle 50s near the coast. Wind light E.

MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Low 55-60 inland, 60-65 coast and urban centers. Wind S under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. High 80-85 except 70s some coastal points. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 61. High 81.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 62. High 81.

Saturday Forecast Update

10:42AM

High pressure centered over the Canadian Maritime Provinces will  provide fair weather this weekend with ocean-modified air. A wind off the ocean into eastern areas is already pushing some low clouds onshore but these will eventually break up and dissipate under the strong June sun into the afternoon. Enough low level moisture will be in place tonight and Sunday morning for low clouds and areas of fog to become more widespread, with this process to be repeated Sunday night and Monday morning. Sun should burn any of this off easily by  midday Sunday, but may have a little more difficulty doing so on Monday if enough high and middle clouds filter the sunshine. This would take place as warm air started to move in aloft.

By Tuesday and through the middle of next week, high pressure will have shifted to a position off the US East Coast, and this will allow a west to southwest flow of much warmer air into New England. I still hesitate to jump all over 90+ temperatures, but the fact we are now in a stretch of mostly sunny and dry weather is rapidly starting to dry out the top soil and will make at least upper 80s and possibly 90 more possible by Wednesday and/or Thursday. Leaning toward Wednesday as the warmest day now as a very weak front may cross the region early Thursday and introduce very slightly cooler air into the region for that day. Timing of course is not certain this far out anyway, and anything midweek is speculation based on guidance at this point.

For now, the forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southeastern NH…

TODAY: Areas of low clouds moving into coastal areas (and several miles inland) through early afternoon with sunshine elsewhere, then sunshine dominating most areas mid to late afternoon. Another area of low clouds reaching some coastal areas by early in the evening. High 65-75 coast to inland, may approach 80 in a few locations far inland. Wind E 5-15 MPH inland and 10-20 MPH coast.

TONIGHT: Low clouds spreading east to west, areas of fog forming. Low 53-58. Wind E under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Low clouds and fog burning off by midday then mostly sunny in the afternoon. High 65-75 coast to inland. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Low clouds & areas of fog return. Low 53-58. Wind E under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. High 68-78 coast to inland. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 59. High 83.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Low 66. High 88.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Low 66. High 85.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Low 68. High 86.

Dry Is The Word

4:06PM

High pressure north of New England will provide dry weather with no heat in sight through the weekend. The only real “interruption” if you want to call it that may be a period of extensive low cloudiness late Saturday night and Sunday morning as some moisture comes in from the Atlantic with an easterly wind.

Next week, high pressure will start shifting more to the south and finally allowing more southwesterly flow to develop. This will result in a warm-up, the first real sign of this likely being less sunshine Monday as warmer air coming in first aloft creates more cloudiness.  I’m not looking for any major heat next week as wetter topsoil and abundant green vegetation will make it hard to heat up too much.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southeastern NH…

THROUGH SUNSET: Clouds depart Nantucket. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Temperatures ranging from the middle 60s to lower 70s coast to inland will fall back slightly. Wind NE-E 10-15 MPH.

TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY: Clear nights, sunny days. Lows in the 50s, coolest interior valleys. Highs 65-75, coolest coast. Wind NE-E under 10 MPH at night, up to 15 MPH during the day.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Low clouds developing. Low 50-55. Wind E under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Low clouds slowly dissipating during the morning leading to a sunnier afternoon. High 62-67 coast, 67-72 inland. Wind E 10-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 57. High 74.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 58. High 80.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 61. High 82.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 63. High 84.

Drizzle Departs, Dry Weather Starts

11:13PM

The last of the drizzle, low clouds, and fog will slip out quietly in the early hours of Thursday morning. Dry weather will follow for days on end as high pressure dominates. The high centered to the north means that an air flow from the north to northeast will keep temperatures in check during the next few days as sunshine dominates. By Monday, more clouds will dominate as warm air starts moving in above the ground first, eventually reaching the surface early next week.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southeastern NH…

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 55. High 72.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 56. High 78.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 57. High 81.
