Heat Blast Inbound

5:55PM

The marine layer’s time is running out here in eastern MA and nearby areas. During the next 24 hours, a southwesterly flow will overtake the area, marking the beginning of a several-day bout of summer weather, if you include tomorrow, the transition day. A few areas have a shot at an official heat wave (3 or more days of 90+ high temps) Wednesday through Friday, if they manage to eek out a 90 onย  Friday.ย  The timing of a cold front that will end the heat blast is still in question: Early Friday? Later Friday? Trying to pin that down but for now am going to go with the earlier timing still….

The weekend? Far away still, but early indications are for cooler (but not too chilly) behind the cold front, and mainly dry. We may have to deal with a disturbance causing some showersย  by the end of the weekend, but this may just as easily hold off til the start of next week.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TONIGHT: Low clouds return. Patchy fog forms. Lows in the 50s, coolest inland valleys. Wind SE under 10 MPH shifting to SW.

TUESDAY: Any low clouds and patchy fog vanishing by mid morning then sunshine. Highs from the upper 70s to lower 80s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear early then areas of low clouds and patchy fog forming again. Lows in the 60s, coolest inland valleys. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs from the upper 80s to middle 90s. Wind WSW 10-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Low 70. High 95.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered thunderstorms. Low 70. High 88.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 60. High 80.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Showers at night. Low 60. High 80.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 63. High 76.

  1. Thanks TK.
The timing of that front is key as to whether we get garden variety storms on Friday or stronger storms.

    1. I prefer NO storms…just plain showers if at all.

Any chance the front can come through dry?

  2. At 7pm our time, two locations shared a common temperature of 62F…..

    Boston, Massachusetts……and………………..Barrow, AK !!!!!

  3. Heading up to NH for a quick vacation with the wife. First time away from the kids and should be gut wrenching and fun at the sametime. Going on the zip lines in Lincoln, 200′ of the ground! Horses back riding and shopping. If we have time I might take a swing up to Mt Washington on the Cog. I’ve done it 4 times before but it’s been a while since we last went up.

SST, I’ve provide a temp report while I’m there! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. What a difference tonight vs. last night. Last night was downright chilly whereas tonight had a more humid feel in the air. Not that’s it’s humid but the air feels different.

I also agree bring on some heat but I prefer 86-90 rather than 95-100!

    1. Indeed ! …and a little bit of their cold as well. It’s been a weird weather year in our region…….I feel like the seasons have truly disappeared this particular year in eastern New England. I’m thinking since Jan. 1, the majority of the high temps ( > say 60%) have fallen somewhere btwn 50F and 70F. No cold, no warm or hot…everything in between.

  5. Thanks TK. Get ready for the heat! I am in Chicago today and it was 94 and humid. Wish it was still the weekend ๐Ÿ™

  6. Last comfortable day before big time heat and humidity set in for the next couple of days. Take it easy to anyone who works outside during this heat and humidity. I would not be surprised if a heat advisory goes up for parts of SNE.
As for the thunderstorm chance with the front I don’t see severe storms at this time so only going with a 1.

  7. Enjoy Wednesday through Friday John since Mother Nature is giving you what you want. As you know I am not a fan of the heat but since it will be short I don’t mind and like I said earlier indications are right now no big time thunderstorms with the passage of the front. I say front this time of year since the air behind it is not cold but rather more comfortable air.

  8. Suddenly clouded over…and there is a large batch of clouds to be had. I wonder if they are caused by a bit of WAA.

      1. Warm air advection. Yes, the upper levels are warming in response to the SW wind, we see this often in the winter time, and this is what I believe is creating the clouds. I don’t think the marine layer is directly responsible.

        1. Are the clouds here to stay? I’m at Nantasket to celebrate the beginning of summer vacation and it’s looking kind of lousy all of a sudden!

          1. I never expected it to unfold the way it did. Disappointing. And not my best sky forecast…

  9. The record high for Friday is 97 (1983) which should still stand but my bet is it will be closer than most forecasts. I will predict a 92 for Boston. I am looking forward to cooler temps come this weekend and hopefully “brief” heatwaves unlike the last two summers.

  10. Cloudy and coolish in Sudbury all day. Bit of a humid feel to the air. I know the HHH is coming, but it’s hard to believe w/the weather today. Our house has been damp and cool all day – actually had to put the heat on for a bit! We do have a lot of trees around. We might be able to retain some of the coolness tomorrow if we keep the windows closed but I am sure by Thurs. we will need the air-conditioner!

Satellite loop of eastern US shows clearing not far to the west of here.

    http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/eaus/flash-vis.html/

Note the swirling clouds to the east out at sea. Impressive.

  11. I should have known.
    Blew the sky condition, again.
Did not take into account the inversion put in place by the marine layer. Even though we now have SW wind, it’s not too strong and taking a long time to scour out all the marine air left behind from days of onshore wind.

Finally will be free of it by morning.

      1. The stratocumulus deck was an inversion that never got wiped out, but advected back across the area today, much like a film of oil floating on water.

  12. Did anyone see the NWS is calling for an NAO that is lik what we had at the beginning of the month?

    1. I did read that…..but, if one believes the GFS or EURO, the upper low is to the north of New England, so while no heat, the surface wind should be offshore (NW or W) and the surface temps should get into the 70s, as opposed to the low 60s the coastline has been seeing recently.

  13. On my way back from Chicago. It was 95 today and there was no AC on the plane until we took off :(.

    1. Thats like being on the red line with no ac. Let me tell you it is nasty. You can tell who forgot to underarm.

      1. Ewwwww. And I agree. Tonight has the feel of heat to come. Kind of fun. Like anticipating a snowstorm Well not as much fun but still exciting.

      2. That is funny John. Lucky for me everyone around me on the plane did! I would not want to have to put up with that for 2 hours. It was nice to land at Logan to 74 degrees at 7 tonight.

    1. Uh oh. Young children and parents and then grandparents in one house should have food weather to get out of the house. I’ll have to go see what the forecast is

    2. I don’t think it will be awful. It’s been interesting to see the EURO developing quite a low for the summer, but I’ve been chalking that up to problems handling invective feedback. In the big picture, I see an upper level pressure area to the north. Sunny early mornings, with afternoon instability leading to afternoon shower/thundershower threat and temps somewhere in the 70s.

  14. Is it possible that June 2012 could feature no days (at Logan) with high temps in the 80s ?

Up to today, the warmest Logan has been is 79F. If the forecast verifies, Wed and Thurs are easily into the 90s. I guess Friday is the wild card…and then it’s quite possibl Saturday on to the end of the month could feature a lot of days in the 70s.

    1. I love that you find these facts. I have a feeling you capture your students interst by doing the same.

      1. Thanks Vicki. As long as I relate facts in school to IPods, IPads, Video Games, Sports and other 6th grade interests, they’ll listen ๐Ÿ™‚

I love data analysis, especially with regards to the weather.

      2. I like it as well. I find the facts you post very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to find them!

  15. Good morning and this is an exciting first day of summer! It’s fun to share it here with everyone!

Also, my husband noticed the other day that we have not been seeing mourning doves. I don’t know if there is a problem or disease with them or if it has to do with the fox and fisher in the area. We always have a bunch of them and hear them early morning but I haven’t seen or heard one all spring. Anyone else noticed a lack of them?
