DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 3-7)

A moist and muggy southwesterly air flow is in place as we start this week, and abundant cloud cover and showery weather will be the rule this morning to midday before we get a break in the action and see a sun / cloud mix for a few hours this afternoon, setting up the shot at a batch of thunderstorms moving west to east across the region later in the day with the passage of a cold front. We’ll have to watch for some severe weather potential with any storms, with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat. Conditions quiet down during Monday night as the front pushes offshore and the storm threat wraps up. High pressure will build in with fair and seasonably warm weather Tuesday, with slightly lower humidity. High pressure then parks itself off the East Coast Wednesday through Friday with warm to hot, humid weather dominating. We will have the chance of a shower or thunderstorm during these 3 days, but the vast majority of the time will feature rain-free weather. The air mass itself makes it most likely that showers and storms would occur during the mid afternoon to early evening, during and just after maximum heating. However, if a smaller-scale disturbance were to cross the region, showers and storms could occur outside of this time window. I have seen hints of one showing up on some guidance for earlier in the day on Wednesday, and perhaps another one late Thursday or Thursday night, but these occurrences are not certain – just something to keep an eye out for.

TODAY: Mainly cloudy with widespread showers and the chance of embedded thunder through midday, focused on areas west of I-95 with occasional showers and a possible thunderstorm I-95 belt eastward. Sun / cloud mix mid into late afternoon before heavier clouds and a likely thunderstorm line or cluster crosses the region from west to east late afternoon to early evening. Highs 74-81. Dew point around 70. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH, but strong and potentially damaging wind gusts can occur with late-day storms.

TONIGHT: Any shower or thunderstorm lingering in southeastern MA ends, otherwise partly cloudy with foggy areas. Lows 66-73. Dew point 65+. Wind shifts to W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 80-87. Dew point drops to near 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of a shower or thunderstorm, primarily during the afternoon hours. Highs 81-88. Dew point 65+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 66-73. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. A chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Highs 82-89 except 75-82 Cape Cod / South Coast. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: A thunderstorm possible early, otherwise partly cloudy with patchy fog. Lows 66-73. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: A sun / cloud mix. A shower or thunderstorm possible in the afternoon. Highs 85-92 except 78-85 coastal areas. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH but with potential sea breezes in all coastal areas.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 8-12)

Continuation of classic summer pattern with high pressure off the Atlantic Coast, moderate to high humidity, and a few shower and thunderstorm chances while most of the time is rain-free. Temperatures near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 13-17)

A general west to east flow develops with a couple passing disturbances bringing shower and t-storm chances. Temperatures near to slightly above normal.

    Nasty morning here in Coventry CT. We have had torrential rain and a strong burst of wind with one of the cells that knocked down a utility pole on Rte 44 and also took a tree down at the golf course where my son is working. Part of the town is out of power. It only flickered out temporarily here.

    0.51″ so far from the downpours over the last couple hours.

  12. If a tropical system comes up close in development it would not be a welcoming situation with the saturated ground in some areas. My guess would be it wouldn’t take a lot wind and more heavy rain to do any a lot of damage to the electrical grid.

    It’s NOT raining in much of Northwestern Europe and essentially hasn’t in quite some time. The drought there is MUCH worse than here. It’s having a dramatic impact on harvests. We also have seen the destruction from wildfires, which has reached countries like the Netherlands. I can attest to this being very unusual.

    On the Red Sox, I was completely wrong back in late June (hey, I was wrong last year, too). I am happy to be wrong. It’s the most remarkable turnaround I’ve ever witnessed across all of professional sports. Going 23-3 in the last 26 games (28-5 in the last 33 games) is exceptional (also harder to do in baseball, compared to other sports). And going 14-0 against 4 separate 1st place teams during this stretch is otherworldly. Really, I’ve never seen anything like it. Keep in mind, the Sox were 32-46 when this began and could barely muster a 3-game winning streak in March through June (I think they had 1 during this time). Placed into this context, the Red Sox’ winning ways are even more astounding.

      Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs all traded for big names yesterday, given what the Sox have done, it would be criminal if the Sox don’t make a big move today.

      But, not holding my breath. I think John Henry is leading the charge on the salary cap and locking out the players next year, so, I can’t see him taking on appreciable salary of a decent player. I hope he proves me wrong before 3pm.

      1. I’ll eat my fishing hat for dinner if he makes a “meaningful” move. I don’t mean a typical dumb-ass red sox move.

        His mind set will be: Hey, they just went 28-5. They’re fine. I don’t need to make any moves and waste my money!!!

    2. A return of Roman Anthony and Curtis Mead at the end of the season and just in time for the playoffs would be a huge plus. Dare I say Garret Crochet return as well??

    We’ve been in a flash flood warned area for the past couple of hours. I suspect the heaviest of the rain may stay just to our west, Woonsocket, Attleboro, etc. We’ll see.

  26. I might be wrong, but rain seems a bit stronger in eastern MA than modeled. It has been raining here consistently for 3 hours, though the rain is light.

  28. Humidity is indeed a theme.

    While I am having trouble with it, I can take it better in August than, say, June. We’re closer to the end of consistent heat and humidity. Still 5 weeks of it being a strong possibility on any given day. But after that, the heat and humidity chances diminish, first gradually and then rapidly by the end of September.

    Thanks to all who wished me well. I am still having trouble with doctors – hard to get one. I am not feeling good most days – mostly my back. A lot of pain. But I may not write like I used to, I am noticing how weird the weather is and how the skies change so much all the time.

  38. Today is one of my favorite kind of weather days. Super humid, lots of rain. If I wasn’t in work and there wasn’t at least a slight lightning threat I’d have gone for a long walk just to get completely soaked, and loved every moment of it.

    No changes to my forecast.

    In the short term, I watch that line to our west which should be clearing the coast by 7 p.m. except a bit later in southeastern MA (8 or 9 p.m.), assuming it survives that far down.

    One-day reprieve on the higher humidity tomorrow, before it makes a 75% comeback (today’s the most humid day this week).

    There seems to be a little mis-read on the hot weather upcoming. This is NOT going to be an episode of high heat like we saw earlier in the summer. More typical (80s to lower 90s) summer heat late week, with the opportunity for some sea breezes as well. Not everything is extreme. 😉 In fact, most things are not. Media just wants us to believe otherwise. I won’t buy into that gimmick, ever. #NotAFanOfNewsDirectors

  42. Very low tops on the cold frontal convective line – virtually no lightning at this time.

      1. Later is the next 30 min. This is the last shot. If this doesn’t do it, the chance is a done deal. These are very low-topped, somewhat disorganized showers. And so far, yes the only lightning I’ve observed is up in NH. This doesn’t have much time left with us.

  44. Hang in there eastern Mass, doesn’t take long to feel a difference in humidity after the front passes. Much different feeling here northwest of Worcester, already.

    1. This is a pretty sharp front. Just not a lot of instability for the cloud towers to really get up there, hence the modest line of showers and very isolated t-storms in it. A little weaker than my expectations.

  46. Dp here and west of here getting down in the 70-63F range, after today, the air feels 100 pounds lighter.

    Should allow lows near 60F at sunrise, a far difference from the 75F this morning and the dps rising into the low-mid 70s overnight.

  47. Wow, moon was incredible on the eastern horizon this evening driving home!

    A little under an inch in the rain gauge here in Coventry today after a total of 7.7” on the month of July. Pretty much back to normal on the year now.
