Whirlpooling

3:37PM

Southern New England is under the influence of a whirlpool of low pressure from the surface to the upper atmosphere and this will only slowly pull away during the next few days. As it starts to lift northeastward, a northerly wind flow at the surface will turn more westerly allowing a slow moderating trend in temperature. A chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue, especially during the afternoon hours, due to the instability with the low, through Thursday.

By Friday and the weekend, a more zonal (west to east) flow in the jet stream will allow for a much warmer and mainly fair period of weather, with only a small disturbance causing a risk of a few showers late Friday night into Saturday morning.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

THROUGH 6PM: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms most likely in Essex County and from near Boston through southeastern MA including Cape Cod. Any storms may produce gusty winds, brief downpours, briefly frequent lightning, and small hail. Temperatures ranging from the middle 60s to lower 70s, dropping toward 60 in storms. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

EVENING (6PM TO SUNSET): Variably cloudy with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures 60-65. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy with isolated showers ending. Low 55-60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High 72-77. Wind W 10-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers early. Low 57-62. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. High 77-82. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

  1. I didn’t even mention Debby in regards to our weather because we’ll never hear from her.

It is a major concern for FL right now though, in terms of rain.

Yesterday’s Euro solution of this system was so off it was cause for a good laugh.

  2. I am wondering with all the rainfall in Florida could Debby just like Allison be retired even though neither was a hurricane.

  3. Thanks TK

We just has the oddest thing happen. It was raining – soft but steady – in the front of our house an nothing was in the back. The kids playing basketball in front two houses down didn’t have rain. They all ran to our yard to see the rain. The sun was out. The clouds are white and light and this continued for about 5 or so minutes. I’ve seen it last a minute but never anything like that

    1. That’s what you call being on the edge of a rain shaft that is moving at the perfect angle to hold that set-up. Unusual for sure, but it happens. It’s just rare for any given spot.

Once back in the Summer of 1982 we had a heavy shower blowing up overhead and at my house we only had a few large drops that you could basically count on your hands while 4 houses up the street to the north it was a torrential downpour. My friend and I stood just outside the downpour watching a bunch of other kids smoking and drinking and getting soaked and we had a good laugh at their expense. 🙂

      1. I love it when I can do that to the “kid gang” or what most normal people on my street have given them the name ” the village idiots.” expecially the past week. they got caught in a few thunderstorms. 😀

    1. Yes was reading about that last night. I was surprised that was not talked about here, thanks shortime.

      1. It was quiet on here yesterday, John. I think everyone “talked” themselves out with the widespread storms on Monday (and the more localized on Sunday)

  4. The rain is back this morning…..oh well.

I see the warm to hot weather forecasted for Fri thru Sunday. If it hits 90F those 3 days at Logan, that would be 6 (90F) days and 2 heat waves by July 1st…..and possibly, 5 of those 90F days during a month that I’m guessing will finish below normal tempwise.

I wonder what the long range models are showing/trending for heat potential during the 8 to 14 day period ? 6 (90F days) by July 1st would be a high launching pad to accumulate a big seasonal total.

Out to battle the raindrops :). Have a good day all !

    1. It’s ok with me if we don’t accumulate a big seasonal total, Tom 🙂 Have fun and happy camping!!!! Thanks for dropping in !!

    1. Hi Matt – I have a non weather question. I was listening to “screams” on the internet and the Fox and Fisher sound a lot alike. Actually, a few articles I found said the Fisher doesn’t scream. I’m thinking it’s a fox we hear since everyone has seen the fox and no one has seen a fisher. Have you heard a fox’s scream?

      1. Vicki… Yes it could be a fox. You might be hearing the higher vocalizations( sounds that a male fox makes for mates do not be surprised to see more foxes. but It could be a fisher cat since the high pitch screams can be mistaken to the medium level vocalizations of fishers. Either way make sure all house pets are inside at night . foxes are known to come right up to doors .it also might just be a large racoon. which means just cover and hide the trash.

        1. Thanks Matt – I was doing some more reading on the Internet and there is one person who raised injured fishers for years and said he’d never heard them scream and that the screams on the internet videos are really foxes. I did find a video of a fox making the exact noise we heard and so suspect at least in our case it’s a fox – two different neighbors say it’s a gray fox. They have seen it.

    2. I was mentioning this yesterday that I would not be surprised if some areas of SNE see their second heat wave of 2012.
      I would favor the interior.
Even when the 90s go away the air is not going to be completely dry as indicated with those overnight lows in the forecast
being in the mid to upper 60s.

    1. Kirbet – thanks for that confirmation – that’s what I am just figuring out. Everyone calls it a fisher and there are tons of recordings of what people say are fisher’s online except there is no picture of the animal. After reading a lot, it seems that those bone chilling screeches are really a fox and that fisher’s don’t really scream much if at all.

  5. For two days that were supposed to be not so good – at least in Framingham – they have been gorgeous. Fairly strong breeze, nice air, clear sky. 73 with 55 dp

        1. Unfortunately that will change Friday into the weekend. As I said earlier I see the humidity being here to some
degree even into early next week with those overnight lows in the 60s. Want to see those lows in the 50s or lower
because that is a dry airmass overhead.

  6. The same bear that was on the Cape was found in a tree in Brookline in the Chestnut Hill section yesterday. Authorities have moved the bear out further to western MA.

If this bear can swim the CCC, I suspect the Connecticut River should be no problem…then will he end up walking through Downtown Crossing or along the Rose Kennedy Greenway next? What a sight THAT would be. 😉 lol.

      1. I believe that particular section of Brookline isn’t all that far from Boston’s city limits! It could be just a matter of time. 😉

        1. they think he followed the Charles. We have the aqueduct running through woods behind our house and I think many of our critters follow it.

  7. I am going to a taping of the X Factor in RI this evening so the next update will be late tonight.

Best chance of showers late afternoon/evening is southern NH and northeastern MA, less likely we see t-storms today.

Less chance of showers/storms for tomorrow than I indicated earlier. May be a spot storm on Friday and again Sunday night but otherwise we are looking at mostly dry and warm to hot weather Friday-Sunday and seasonably warm weather the first half of next week!

    Have a great evening!

  8. I’m at Lyndon State College for the next few days with the summer orientation. I am beyond excited.

    1. Enjoy Scott. This is a very exciting time in your life and it’s nice that we can share a bit of it with you!

    1. Hi JJ.

Not a great deal of sun in east central NH today and I’m at a location thats somewhat elevated (about 800 ft)……so the temp was about 68F at its warmest and the wind’s trajectory was ideal to travel across most of the lake to our northwest. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I was chilly all day and am looking forward to returning to southern New England’s low to mid 80s tomorrow.

  9. Wow, see on TWC website that parts of the central and southern US are headed for 100F+ the next few days and potentially all time June high temps.

  10. It appears the weekend heatwave will be short lived. Next week including the 4th should have seasonable temps…upper 70’s-low 80’s. Even the CPC has normal temps for most of the east coast. I am keeping my fingers crossed this verifies! 🙂

I believe the past two July 4ths had HHH…typical but ugh! 🙁

  11. The central CONUS will have the 90-100+ heat next week…let it stay there the rest of the summer AFAIC! 🙂

  12. Tom that is fall weather during summer up where you are. I don’t blame you for wanting it a little warmer than that after all it is summer.
Looks like a mesoscale connvective system will miss us to the southwest overnight tomorrow into Friday morning. What won’t miss is the heat and humidity but as Philip pointed out it will be short lived.

  13. I hate to admit this but the Farmers’ Almanac predicted at the end of June there would be many 90s in the northeast with some places hitting the 100 mark and it looks like they will be right. Lucky guess!!!
