  1. Prime Minister Boris Johnson (UK) is in deep trouble, and may have to resign. Parliamentary democracy holds PMs directly responsible/accountable for policy failures/misdemeanors (parties held at the PM’s residence on Downing Street during lockdown) in ways our democracy does not and cannot.

If Trump has been PM and we had a parliamentary democracy he and his cabinet (government) wouldn’t have survived 2017, let alone 2018, 2019, and 2020. Moreover, it’s probable Biden would not have survived in 2021 (Afghanistan debacle alone would have led to a motion of no confidence).

Here’s how a Tory (Conservative) MP – Christian Wakeford – defected to Labour in the middle of a plenary session today. Talk about dramatic. https://twitter.com/SebastianEPayne/status/1483773937318252549

    1. Wow. Even without our ability to oust a politician, we do have the ability to stand up to him or her. Instead we have chosen to stand behind and support what we know are not only blatant lies but are also very real threats to the survival of our democracy

    1. Ugh.

JPD. I don’t bother looking at the dashboard any more. I just go to your graph. It gives an awesome visual thank you

    2. I’d suggest taking Thursday’s number (under-reporting due to communication issues) and adding it to the post weekend number and dividing by the number of days to get something closer to the daily number for that stretch.

The huge Monday numbers make the graphs much harder to read. They could capture the date of the test and that would help…

It’s a shame they don’t do a better job at reporting these statistics…

      1. Reporting is awful….intentionally or accidentally. I absolutely know some numbers given go DESE last year were not reported to the public. I don’t know about the state but am suspect. As of now, however, we can also add a whole lot to any numbers given due to both home tests and to people just assuming they have covid and not testing

  2. I reached out to a person I know who has the ear of many in the statehouse. He is working on finding out about Medicare. He was shocked too.

    1. Though I’d never do this, I’m honestly wanting to get it and just know it and be done with it (and live, obviously).

  3. NY Times has a headline today that says “Omicron is in retreat.” They’ve done this before during the pandemic, at least 5 times. Perhaps they’re taking their cues from Gottlieb.

I’ll be the first to say that we do have some promising signs of decline in cases in a growing number of states. BUT: 1. We’re descending from a very high peak, so “in retreat” may be overstating it. 2. Always, always be cautious before stating definitively that a virus is in retreat. First, look at what’s happening globally where the virus that WAS “in retreat” 10 days ago in quite a few European countries, and is now rebounding steadily. I agree with this guy: https://twitter.com/pjthornalley/status/1483894216715653121

Notice the large numbers of deaths across the UK in recent days, by the way. Quite striking.

    1. So irresponsible but they have been borderline irresponsible for a while. I gave up on them also. And wapo

  4. Sorry, technical challenge…

The UK government is talking about ending plan b measures (mandatory masking and work from home) at the end of January and starting to “live with the virus”.

      1. Though I’d never do this, I’m honestly wanting to get it and just know it and be done with it (and live, obviously). Though I don’t buy this completely, there’s a theory/conspiracy/BS story about how when the Higgs Bosun supercollider was first ramped up it fractured something in the general timeline of the universe and some of us were caught on one side where we paid attention and took care of Covid and the climate and politics and the other side is where we currently are. And woe to those who got caught on the wrong side (both sides think the other is wrong)…we “right” people got caught on the “bad” side…
