  1. Thanks TK.

    Continue to get better Joshua!

Cases and hospitalizations continue to increase.

  2. The number of teachers and students testing positive for Covid and out for 5 days has exploded in the last week or 2.

    1. like, we might be at 20% teacher absence and above 10% for students. Eye-opening, my first class was missing 3 students out of 15.

    2. Indeed it has. Please stay safe Tom and captain and all.

I posted the numbers here a few days ago. For last Thursdays report….8000 students and 2,636 staff in the past five in school days. I’m also hearing g that keeping up with classes and actual teaching is very difficult in many districts.

You’d think we would reinstate masks in school. If nothing else, Joshua is sadly a perfect example of how close proximity. And the more school folks I speak to the more it seems as if schools drive a lot of the positives elsewhere.

      1. Yes.

Simply not enough subs to cover the classes, even with teachers covering during 1 of their 2 preps.

Thanks. I’m actually signed up for my 2nd booster in about a week. I think I’m hopefully benefitting from my late Sept 1st booster and then the December antibodies from getting Covid at Christmas.

  3. Below is a spreadsheet for school Covid numbers this year. The increase in numbers as Tom mentioned is very concerning. I’m even more concerned about the high number of staff. It’s the highest it’s been throughout Covid with the exception of January this year

Joshua…..it seems something isn’t working to protect the staff?? Or maybe it is masks.

Tom and Captain, what percent of students and staff still wear masks?

Remember these numbers are far lower than the actual positive numbers.

    1. As far as I know, BPS still has its mask order in effect. I would be curious as to how many school districts in the state lifted their mask mandates. Obviously Tom’s has.

Vicki, do you have access to such data? Just wondering.

  4. COVID now invading my daughter’s daycare again after a long respite. Also, another exposure at school for my son after going back to school last Friday after being out the rest of week due to exposure the week before. This time he is exempt from protocol since he’s now considered fully vaccinated. Numbers in the rest of the schools in town way up too.

  5. I’m scheduled to travel to Chicago for work 2nd half of this week (re-schedule from last August when #’s were rising much like they are now). This is a mandatory trip but growing more nervous since the travel guidelines have been relaxed. Seems ripe for spread.

    1. Ace will keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayers. Masks need to be back in place.

      1. I like the MBTA’s message.

        Face Coverings ENCOURAGED.

It gets confusing going back and forth with mandates (mask or otherwise) once they have been lifted. Just my opinion.

        1. Philip I don’t have info listing schools that have Mack mandates in place. With the very vocal parent groups who have fought masks throughout, I’m guessing the list would be very small. Boston May still have its in place. I’m not sure

To me Encouraged is a way to avoid addressing an issue. Kids are still sent to school sick. Adults are still attending events and meetings sick. There is no personal responsibility for too many. It is not new. But it is a much larger concern when we have a virus as serious as covid.

Both Joshua and I have mentioned most minority groups don’t have a problem with masking. I’ll leave the rest of that up to interpretation

  6. I would say a few more staff and students are putting them back on.

Probably 25% of staff and 10% of students have masks on.

  7. Took my first home test today. I’ve been run down with a bit of a sore throat. I thought allergies but take care of a grandchild on Monday’s so wanted to be sure. It was thankfully negative.

  8. Thanks for the well wishes.

I’m doing better. Sore throat practically gone. Still drinking lots of tea.

  9. How is this even allowed? No coronavirus updates in 11 days in Washington DC. https://twitter.com/medriva/status/1523443523680276481

This reminds me of the lack of reporting on opioid overdoses and deaths, or even basics like how many Rx opioids were being prescribed in certain jurisdictions. This was a major problem in the 2000s. We had no idea how bad it was until the data finally got released.

I just don’t get it. States and all jurisdictions should be obligated to report data. Without it, we’re blind.

    1. Our game is to move actual reports to inaccurate and lower.

We truly are a ship of fools

  10. Yes numbers in schools are up—numbers in my school are up—I’m home with Covid. And those who want to mask can and are fully supported in doing so. Here is what one epidemiologist told me:

one way masking is widely accepted as effective in preventing disease. It’s hard to make everyone wear a mask to reduce infection risk from near zero to really near zero.

    1. Oh dear. So sorry. I hope you feel better quickly.

Natick has struggled with some of the highest numbers since the mask mandate was lifted. Maybe the epidemiologist is correct but we are not close to near zero, so sadly I’m not sure what he/she means

I’d agree it is difficult to make everyone wear a mask. Far too few in this country have lost the concept of for the greater good
